Here is the Sunday talking head line-up. Read it and weep: (some via Contra-Costa Times)
ABC: "This Week" -- Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and John Cornyn, R-Texas; national security adviser Stephen Hadley; actor Sam Waterston
CBS: "Face the Nation" -- Defense Secretary Robert Gates; Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.
NBC: "Meet the Press" -- Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.; Rep. Joe Sestak, D-Pa.; former Rep. Tom Andrews, D-Maine; former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas; Richard Perle, fellow at the American Enterprise Institute
CNN: "Late Edition" -- National security adviser Stephen Hadley; Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa.; former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski; retired Army Gen. George Joulwan; Michael Gordon, chief military correspondent for the New York Times; retired Army Col. Patrick Lang
"Fox News Sunday" -- Former U.S. attorneys Bud Cummins of Arkansas and David Iglesias of New Mexico; Sens. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and John Kerry, D-Mass.; Alyssa Mastromonaco, campaign aide to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.
C-Span's Washington Journal: 7:30am - Betsy Hawkings, Office of Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT), Chief of Staff; 8am - Matt Stoller, MyDD.com, Blogger; 8:30am - Afif Safieh, Chief of Palestinian Mission to U.S.; 9am - Amb. David Satterfield, Senior Adviser to Sec. Rice on Iraq; 9:30am - Imam Yahya Hendi, Georgetown University, Muslim Chaplain
In reviewing the line-up, it looks like a full court press for several issues, including the US Attorney firings, the troop escalation in Iraq, the abysmal foreign policy failure that is the Bush Administration, and the betrayal of Valerie Plame Wilson and the state of the intelligence community at the moment. Take your pick -- it looks like a not-so-cheery line-up for George Bush fans.
People to look for this morning: Pat Lang on CNN's Late Edition, along with Zbigniew Brzezinski and Rep. Jack Murtha; and Sen. Pat Leahy on This Week. When you add in Sen. Chuck Shumer on Meet the Press and Sen. Dianne Feinstein on Face the Nation, I see a full court press on the US Attorney issue and am wondering how much we'll be hearing about whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has been less than forthcoming with Congress. (Hint: a lot.)
Here's hoping there some news on a subpoena for Karl Rove. Don't know about you, but that's a reason to pour another cuppa coffee...
Today's bird photo is a Carolina wren. If you haven't been lucky enough to see these little guys up close and personal, you are really missing out. We have a pair that reside in wooded area near our house -- and they show up regularly at our feeders, hopping about, clinging to the wood, and climbing upside down to snatch a sunflower chip or a peanut out of reach of the hordes of sparrows and finches. They are quite the little acrobats, using their feet to cling upside down and sideways on my big feeder, always picking through the seeds to select the choice tidbits and then flying off by my car tire to nibble at them.
It's cold and snowy here -- hopefully this will be the last of the snow for the year. (A girl can dream...) How are things in your neighborhood this morning?
PS -- Two things I forgot to link up yesterday. Bob Geiger has some fantastic cartoons -- don't miss the Mike Lucovich ones. And a great essay on Green Beer and English from Tom Watson.
UPDATE: I also meant to be certain that everyone saw this from Media Matters: If It's Sunday, It's Conservative.
UPDATE #2: There is a huge pet food recall underway for some food that has been implicated in kidney failure in some pets. I know a lot of our readers have dogs and cats, and I wanted to pass along this link for further information. (H/T to twolf1 for sending me the link. There are a LOT of brands involved, apparently.)

Two weeks without Lieberman. Hopefully, this is the start of a trend.
Matt Stoller is doing a fantastic job on Washington Journal this morning. Yay, Matt!
Christie used my photo!
Okay, now that I’ve got that out of the way… :)
I read a great piece from the UK Independent this morning about the various lies in the BBC Channel 4 recent anti global warming film. These people are shameless.
Julie at 4 — It’s a fantastic photo. Especially given that my pair of Carolina wrens were just fighting it out over a pile of peanut chips with an irate cardinal. Thanks so much for letting me use the pix. :)
Beautiful picture, Julie.
What a rude woman
Hey Christy, fwiw, way back when, looseheadprop and Mary, were all over an LATimes article about how the WH was cutting funding to the US Attorneys. IIRC, PJ Evans was the one who linked to it originally. AFAIK, it’s behind the LATimes’ firewall now, but iirc, it would clearly fuel the anger over the firings. US Attorneys literally had to choose which serious felons to prosecute, because they could not afford plane trips to take depositions, basic office supplies […]. White collar clients with resources had far greater leverage than before. OT, the WH’s fixation on prosecuting illegal aliens and terrorists could certainly be interpreted as a way of getting the US Attorneys off of white collar criminals such as ex Tyco CEO, Dennis Kozlowske. This analysis leads back to Grover Norquist’s, “we want to shrink government down to where we can drown it in the bathroom.”
John at 8 — Wow, very interesting. I don’t have an LATimes subscription — would you mind e-mailing me a copy of the article? I would love to read that. Thanks much for the heads up on this!

No problem– I hadn’t expected to do any photos yesterday, and the wrens do not often come to the feeder while I’m out there, so I was really pleased. I had gone out looking for a fox sparrow, just because everyone in the area was getting fox sparrows at their feeders (Someone on the New Hampshire bird list actually posted that he -didn’t- find a fox sparrow because he thought it was noteworthy). So… I thought I might catch the picture of one. No luck with that, but I’m happy with what I did find.
It’s funny that your wrens fight with the other birds; ours just run right in and hang out and the other birds don’t seem to bother them at all. This might just be what happens when I’m outside, though– fewer birds come to the feeders when I take pictures, so the wrens might make use of the opportunity when other birds are skittish.
After a high of 82 posted earlier this week at the Greenville-Spartanburg airport, winter, amidst many signs of spring, is reminding me that it has not departed just yet: it is 29 and clear in my part of upstate South Carolina.
Wow Stoller was amazing on Cspan Washington Journal. Hope there will be both a repeat later today and a video for people to see.
He has poise, a good sense of where the camera is, complete and nuanced answers to questions, and a little gentle self-deprecating humor [”curmudgeon”]. I think we will see much more of him on television in the future.
Morning Christy …. soda bread was a big hit last night … Thanks
Sorry, Christy, I didn’t make it clear, I don’t have a copy or access either. I just remember it being excellent. My hope is that looseheadprop, PJ Evans, or Mary might have it. My guess is that it’s at least a year old. Sorry.
blue e at 13 — Glad you enjoyed it. Mr. ReddHedd told me that I can feel free to make another loaf today, so I think it was a hit here as well. *g*
John at 14 — Oh, that’s okay — I can track it down, I’m sure. Thanks much.
And The Peanut was gracious enough to allow momma to watch her friend Matt on C-Span this morning, but we are now back to cartoons here this morning after breakfast. So please use this thread to give me a heads up if there is anything noteworthy on the morning shows. Thanks!
Well I made two, since I was cooking for a group ……..so I am eating some this morning for breakfast.
Christy:
Speaking of photos, I know it was old and funky, but I wonder if you ever got the photo of the baby owlets a couple weeks ago? Well it was still during the Libby trial, and I know everybody on your end was awfully busy.
I’m on the Left Coast and most Sunday mornings I start here to see how sickening the line-up will be this morning. MTP comes on at 6:00am my time, hardly worth getting up for usually if I wasn’t an early riser anyway.
Exile at 19 — I did get it — I thought I’d e-mailed back a thanks. Sorry if I didn’t. It was awfully cute. :)
Since twolf & I often trade comments wrt the Washington Journal, sure hope he got to see Stoller (see eg’s analysis). Was finding the segment remarkably free of wingers………..’til the next to last caller. One out of a 30-minute period (guess the rest were sleeping in or getting ready for church). ;-)
Apologies to fdl folk that I didn’t live blog Stoller. I wanted to watch him to see how he responded to different kinds of questions, and what his expressions were as he spoke.
Maybe we can get the transcript, Christy, you’re the resident Washington Journal expert :) Do they produce transcripts?
Jeralyn will be on CNN Reliable Sources from 10-11 ET.

About half an hour ago, NPR’s Weekend Edition mentioned (I didn’t hear all of it) the imbroglio involving the U.S. attorneys. The portion I heard mentioned Carol Lam.
Terry Olson @ 1
But, back then nobody knew the documents were forgeries!
If they were.
Which has actually never been proved.
At least by anybody that FoxNews believes.
The way that Waxman had to sign his name says it all:
Ranking Minority Member.
Waccamaw, I did leave you an EPU response last thread… (we seem to be playing the EPU game together)
Completely off Talking Head topic, but birdy…
Does anyone see blue jays any more? About 12 years ago we had gangs of them bullying the other birds and now if I see one a week I’m surprised. I’ve read that West Nile virus has decimated them here, and I’m wondering if it’s just down here or everywhere?
Thanks for letting me know you got the pic, I thought you might like it in spite of it’s funkiness quality wise. I have to remember it was taken almost 50 years ago with a funky Brownie Starflash.
And as I said, I know how busy you all were, especially at that time. I want to repeat tho too how much I appreciate what you FDLers do all the time, but especially then during that trial.
B’gorrah, look at that! Leahy! Schumer! Feinstein! Sestak! I’m not so sure “read it and weep” is a given today!
I don’t see them as much here, either, Marion. But we do have a pair that sometimes shows up whenever I put out whole peanuts in the shell.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 29
So I guess it’s more than just down here. Too bad. I know lots of people think they’re “problem” birds, but I have a soft spot for them. They’re colorful, and “assertive.” Yee hah! One just came to get a sunflower seed… I hope they make a comeback.
Question for the birders out there -
There’s something that looks a lot like Julie’s pic building a nest in an overhead bracing in the lower level of the cottage in SE NC………is that a likely location for a C Wren home? Little suckers are small, brownish & faster’n lighting (apologies for a less than adequate description). *g*
Schumer says that if Abu is gone the WH will have a chance to clear the air and reaffirm their faith in the rule of law. Nice try Chuck, they have no interest in the rule of law or the Constitution, they’ll probably just start another “surge” against justice!
this one looks like fun, esepcially where fox actually has former u.s attorneys, I know most former U.S. attorneys are livid over what’s happened to their once proud department
how many people think fox actually got some of these attorneys to say the fireings are a nothing?
anyway I’d like to comment on this text;
I like the word “betrayal” much better then “outed”
however this is more about bertrayal of the entire cia and our national secrets then betrayal of Valery.
obviously they betrayed Valery but the damage was to this country at untold expense of treasure and information, betrayal of her contacts who are now at life peril, betrayal of the cia who will no find it much more difficult to aquire operatives and assets
Christy Hardin Smith @ 9
I think he should post it here and you can take it down *ahem* as soon as you realize there might be a copywrite infringement
I might be able to read it before you see it to take it down
Well, it’s still dark thirty here on the northwestern California coast, and I can hear the geese honking as they fly over in flocks of hundreds.

I’m afraid so.
He agreed with a nitwi - er, fine lady that called him a leftwinger. This is the same fellow whose blog threatened me for “bashing Decocrats” for not chatting up rightwing Democrats who would ban abortions, keep us in Iraq, etc., etc.. I have been a Democrat longer than Stoller has been alive.
Stoller’s agenda to support the election of Democrats without regard to their politics gave us Joe Lieberman and once the like of Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond. It was the repudiation of segregation that cleansed the party of the segregationists just as opposition to the Iraq War got rid of Lieberman. No doubt it was costly but worthwhile I think. This is a fellow who supported Harold Ford in Tennessee as best I can recall.
Whatever Stoller is, he ain’t no leftwinger by a long shot.
A party that stands for nothing at all doesn’t have much chance of longterm electoral success. The divorce of Democrats from its natural base in the working class and, following the mandate of the DLC, to look after the welfare of the upper classes has greatly damaged the Democratic Party IMO.
Best, Terry
What crap keeps coming out of the mouth of the Pumkin Head. He is trying to browbeat Schumer. They need a judge on that show to tell Tim that the question has been asked and answered and to move along.
Schumer carefully explained the Lam example of interference with an ongoing, politically charged investigation, and Tim in the next breath says, “but there haven’t been any investigations intefered with, you just making a political point.” What a tool!
I have a few Blue Jays here is south Jersey. They stop by once a day. I bought corn to feed the squirrels, which don’t eat it, but the blue jays love it. As a matter of fact I hear a blue jay right now.
I have a couple Carolina Wrens here. I adore them. They are fun to watch. I also like watching Nuthatchs walking down the side of a tree. It’s fascinating to see a bird with two legs walk at almost a 90 degree angle.
Julie- Nice photos, I’m a dead eye Dick when it comes to shooting photos of birds. Butterflies on the other hand I seem to have knack for.
Matt Stoller is a nice guy. I met him while working for Ned. I enjoy his writing, and I’m glad to see that he’s on the teeveee.
And finally, that menu of scandals is very appetizing for breakfast. Hopefully it encourage the repugs to eat their own.
I really think the Democrats should be cautious and not appear too zealous in investigating George W. Bush or they’ll pay for it like the Republicans did with another 8 years of congressional domination and *8 years of the presidency.

Then Tim resorts to suggesting that Schumer can’t fairly investigate the attorney firings because he is involved with the Senate election campaign and thus too partisan. Jeeez Louise, I forgot, none of the RePukes are partisan, I’ll try to remember that in the future.
I know that Tim has a law degree, but I didn’t know he was practicing law. He sounded like Karl “blossom” Rove’s goddamn counselor this morning.
The petulant Preznit says no one tells him who to fire. That posture should really help the Republican cause.
Gonzo “declined” an invite from Press the Meat to appear this morning……..interesting, that.

We get them a lot in Vermont, but not so much as we used to a few years ago; I think this is partially because of our attempt to squirrel-proof our feeders. They’re not as easy to access for larger birds either, so we don’t get completely mobbed by blue jays the way we used to. We do, however, have them in the area throughout the summer and through some of the winter. They, along with the grackles and red-winged blackbirds, will mob crows when they come looking for nestlings to eat. We used to have an open feeder which would get emptied out by large flocks of blue jays and assorted blackbirds in a matter of hours. No more :)
Of course, even squirrel proofing isn’t perfect:

Funny–and that’s the show that WH believes allows them to “control the message,” (quoting Cathie Martin).
Marion, there are bluejays in MN. We also had a flock of cedar waxwings winter across the street. Robins were here in abundance in February (just before a huge snow dump). Cardinals and chickadees have been singing spring songs for over a month. Things are clearly shifting in the bird world. I am so relieved that global warming is a big, fat myth!

Regularly see bluejays at my friends’ weekend place, near NYC. Not loads of them, but they’re around. I’m starting to get excited about the robins’ nest in the pergola over the kitchen patio. There’s been one there for the past several years. Two years ago, we were there when Mrs. Robin moved her babies out of the nest. Took most of the morning, and we were able to watch it all. The coolest thing was watching her maneuver them up and over a fence into the neighbor’s yard. Away, no doubt, from my friends’ dogs. (Who, bless their hearts, we kept inside until the little robins had made it to safety.)

Speculation: What Happens *After* Impeachment?
At this point, in my humble opinion, Alberto Gonzales will not be Attorney General much longer, and the Bush Administration has reached the inevitable tipping point from which it cannot recover.
It seems reasonable to speculate that Bush and / or Cheney will not complete their terms, which raises several questions.
In my opinion, the ideal scenario would be for Bush and Cheney to go together, leading to Nancy Pelosi becoming President. Whom would Nancy Pelosi choose for her Vice President? Would Nancy Pelosi then run for re-election in 2008? (My guess would be that she would choose not to run, in which case her VP would be the presumptive frontrunner Presidential Candidate in 2008.)
Surely, the Republicans have considered this; from their perspective, I guess it makes more sense for Cheney to go first (I just cannot envision Cheney outlasting Bush), to allow Bush to choose his own replacement (a la Spiro Agnew / Gerald Ford).
Whom would the Republicans choose? Colin Powell? James Baker? Harriet Miers?!
How does the removal of Bush/Cheney affect the dynamic of the 2008 Election?
On one hand, it’s fun to speculate; on the other, the next 20+ months will mark a period of instability in the U.S. that is unprecedented. It will be a great relief to be rid of Bush/Cheney, but what then?

Question about bee losses. I live in cold country so have not “experienced” the issue yet. Have any of you out there noticed a reduction in bees or the effects of the reduction in bees. This seems like a very important issue, not being discussed much. Just wondered if any of you folks in warmer climes…have noticed that there are not as many or that things aren’t growing the way they should??
Also to the discussion of blue jays. We used to have tons of them and they would sort of battle it out with the cardinals in my neighborhood. We have west nile here and I have found several dead blue jays (last fall). So far this spring, I have not seen a single one. I have seen many cardinals…so it may be that they were run out by the cardinals. But it seems that they are much less in number where I live in nebraska.
GSD @ 39
As best I can recall the Democrats did pretty well after their investigations of another criminal enterprise in the White House under Nixon.
Truth is the Republicans completely muffed their opportunities with concentration on [horrors] blow jobs rather than what was handed to them on a platter. The GOP was handicapped by being not all that different from Clinton, who incidentally ran the greatest disinformation operation ever from the White House. Bush could have learned much more from Clinton if Bush weren’t dumber than a post.
Best, Terry
Thanks for the pic we have tons of Carolina Wrens, duh, in N.C. and lots of Jays, although not as many.
I’m surprised that Fox is having Kerry and Alyssa on. Scary when not every face is Conservative.
Blaise (#61):
i think you’re right about gonzales. i give him a maximum of two weeks. but we’ll be lucky if we can smoke out cheneycakes. he is one sneaky, ruthless old toad. and he knows where all of the stinky bits are buried. fuckwad is a tossup, but if he goes on a binge they might have to put him in rehab. if this were the beginning of his second term there would be a good chance of convicting him. with just nineteen months left the clock is against it. congress works pretty slowly, even when provoked. that said, there’s no harm in a little speculation, and i would love it if your concerns end up needing to be addressed ……
Incidentally it should have been a great pleasure to FDL readers to see Brit Hume look like he was eating a pickle on Fox when his continuing charade about Valery Plame managing to send her husband to Niger was contradicted.

That is the interesting part. In such a curdled political situation, there is so much possibility out there. The US could be economically independent. Windpower is growing at better than a 30%/year rate, and there is a growing sector focused on food independence. There is *so* much possibility out there and we are having to put up with this bullshit while the enormous possibilities are languishing.

Last summer I did notice there were less bees in my garden. I shoot a lot photos of pollinators, so I am very aware of them. When I read recently about the drop off in bees, it confirmed what I saw in my own little part of the world. On the other hand, I saw a lot more butterflies, and my host plants served a lot more caterpillars, especially Eastern Black Swallowtails.
Toensing is an idiot and so are Bill Kristol and Brit Hume. If the WH is in deep denial about Abu “you’re not entitled to habeous corpus” Gonzales, they are in extreme deep denial at FOX news this morning.
I do on occasion watch snippets of FOX news just so I can see what the right is saying about Plame. I have to hand it to Chris Wallace and Juan Williams this morning, they were at least pointing out the obvious testimony that put to bed some of the questions about Valerie sending Joe to Niger, and the covert issue, and Hume and Kristol were still denying the obvious. I don’t see how those people stay on tv. Juan Williams at one point was just sitting there shaking his head in disgust at the shit that Hume and Kristol were spewing forth. Talk about Baghdad Bobs.
terry hallinan @ 68
Oh - good - glad he was contradicted! I had to turn Brit off as soon as he started in - couldn’t stand listening, as my stomach was churning. Who contradicted him? Did he respond, or just continue eating the pickle?
Blaise Faint @ 61
well, rove might be a moron but not this big a moron
I believe as you do that gonzales will be another tipping point if he is “resigned”
I also believe rove and bush understand this and they will just say no to “resigning” him
I believe it will take proceedings of impeachment of gonzales before the president gets rid of him “voluntarily”
I know I am alone in this speculation but if I am rove I am telling the president there is no way he can “resign” abu torure until the democrats initiate articles of impeachment toward abu or arrest him for ignoring a subpeona
btw
I believe abu will ignor subpeona…what happens then?

Well I had no trouble getting the bad food up, I had forgotten that Perle would be reinforced and enhanced with the Bugman Delay. Why do they allow Tom Delay on TeeVee? Why isn’t he in custody?
If it weren’t so real and so tragic I would have thought I was watching an SNL skit when Tom Delay deigned to explain the intricacies of military strategy to retired Admiral Sestak. At least Andrews pointed the absurdity of that before Pumkin head could gang up with the Bugman.
If he ignores the subpoena, then he will be impeached.
KathieinMN @ 72
Even Chris Wallace. I swear I am not making this up.
Chris Wallace played a rerun of Valery Plame’s statement she had nothing whatever to do with sending her husband to Niger.

I’ve heard many criticisms of my friend Matt Stoller, but never any that he does not criticize Dems enough. I’ve never heard anyone accuse him of being an apologist for all Dems, as opposed to a fierce agitator and critic intent on pushing the party to become an aggressive, progressive party. “shame Schumur [sic] doesn’t know about Black” HELL!
The real shame is he doesn’t seem to know about a guy named Karl Rove.
What is it with all these brain-dead pols [sorry to be redundant] who start the drum beat for a head, but never start the rant for Karl Rove’s head.
Shakespeares Sister tells it like it is:
If this slimy shit is not issued a subpoena next week, I’m considering moving to Mexico where they have a more real democracy!

Re. your comments on bee conditions: my grandfather & uncle were professional bee keepers many years ago and it’s amazing that almost no one in the US has any concept of the importance of these remarkable creatures on our food supply. Read a rather detailed article not too long ago about the problem (sorry, didn’t keep linky). Also read?heard bee keepers in California have starting transporting their hives long distances to rent them to the big agricultural growers on a seasonal basis……without any real knowledge of the impact on the health of the insects. Too many dots; too few people making connections.
Morning all!
Dear Christy! We hope you’re feeling better today. Hard not to burn the candle at both ends during fitzmas, I know, but please feel welcome, indeed obligated, to take it easy for awhile.

We love their perky, feisty personality, AND - that song could blow the seats off the top bleachers! Just love ‘em! Oh, and you can add them to the list of plain suet nibblers. ;->
Shakes called Unka KKKarl a lump of shit. There goes her chance of getting a job in politics.

Per Pach above, I think your criticism of Stoller is seriously inaccurate. Stoller is very smart and pragmatic, but he’s not a Vichy liberal in any way in which I am familar. Do you have links?
I’m watching C-Span 3 rebroadcast a Capitol Hill Hearing on the scandal surrounding the Clinton Pardon of swindler Marc Rich.
If I understand the testimony correctly, it discloses that Ivan Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby was one of the attorneys who profited from legal work on behalf of Rich in advance of the pardon application. (Did I hear that Libby billed $2 million in fees?)
Am I the only one who did not know that Libby was involved with the Clinton pardon of Rich? Does this shed light on funding the Libby defense? Could it be that Libby has reason to suspect a future pardon by … HRC?
