A funny thing happened while I was typing away at my nationally- and globally-focused blog: The local blog journalism movement mushroomed right underneath my nose and I had no idea it existed, I'm sorry to say, until relatively recently.
Just as the success of Fire Dog Lake is what showed even the old-school press diehards that nationally-focused bloggers weren't just Op-Edders in jammies, rising local blogs like Minnesota Campaign Report, Minnesota Monitor and A Bluestem Prairie are showing that even on a shoestring, online journalists can work the same turf as their old-school print brethren.
For specific examples, follow me past the fold.
Minnesota Monitor has covered and/or broken a slew of stories lately: the Michele Bachmann e-mail controversy, the related Michele Bachmann astroturf controversy (which TRex cited in his Late Nite FDL post last night), and the buyout frenzy at the wobbly StarTribune. They also managed to raise the ire of Michael "Savage" Weiner, who called for their reporters to be "deported". Gotta love a news source that ticks off the Savage Weiner!
Minnesota Campaign Report was the first media entity, blog or non-blog, to link the February 2006 resignation of local US Attorney Tom Heffelfinger (and his replacement by wet-behind-the-ears Federalist Society member Rachel Paulose) to the mass firings done of US Attorneys by the Bush Junta (see here and here). They also have been engaging in a battle of wits with local Republican blogger and would-be A-lister Michael Brodkorb, and so far seem to be winning.
A Bluestem Prairie is the best source of news on new up-and-coming Congressman Tim Walz (aka The Hardest Working Man in Show Business) of Minnesota's First Congressional District. Walz is one of the Fighting Dems that the DLC and Blue Doggers have been trying to retroactively claim as their own, but a quick read of BSP posts — such as this one showing his firm stance in favor of withdrawal — gives the lie to their claims. BSP recently broke the news that prominent and powerful state Senator Dick Day is planning on challenging Walz in 2008, thus getting the jump on all the traditional media.
As Kid Oakland, another Minnesota blogger, noted last year, local blogs are big everywhere. So why don't you tell me about your favorite local blogs that also do journalism? Wouldn't it be great if they could work with each other — y'know, have their own version of the AP Wire and all that?

PW, you should add dumpbachmann.com to the list.
We have some great local bloggers in Ohio – Buckeye State Blog, Yellow Dog Sammy and OH02. OH02 has been quiet lately but he broke a big story during the last campaign regarding Jean Schmidt’s support of bring nuclear waste to the district. Worth reading his archives. I hope he returns to active blogging.
I’m in Minnesota as well, so I’d like to also recommend MN Publius.
Balrog @ 2
Thanks, ‘rog. I was trying to keep the post relatively short — we’re on a word diet and I’ve been one of the worst offenders!
puppethead @ 4
Yup — IIRC, Pub was the blog that broke the news that Brodkorb (a paid GOP operative) was behind Minnesota Democrats Exposed.
puppethead @

Me too, and I’d also like to add the MN Gop Watch as a great place to get the rundown on the idiocy of Norm Coleman and friends.
Anyone know if Garrison Keilor has a blog?
A second for dumpbachmann. I have enjoyed their reports and several of the youtube videos they have put up.
If there were only such dedication to Virgil Goode, or mean Jean Schmidt.
Blog journalism has so far defied going beyond infancy in Alaska.
Sorta OT, but it is St. Patrick’s Day. Patrick Fitzgerald is spending St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin, addressing American attorneys there on the importance of adhering to International Law.
JEP @ 8
I don’t think so — his new bookstore barely has a web presence! (I saw him there the other day and he said that most technology scares him; if he’d had his way, the place would use abacuses.)

There was a disturbance in the force, a great deal of Karma localized on DC all at once with cataclysmic results…someone puked and an fool who doesn’t know where she’s going walked into it.
In Virginia, Waldo Jaquith is my favorite for Virginia politics, though I don’t follow local blogs as much as I should. He’s been all over the MZM/Virgil Goode angle of the Duke Cunningham scandal. (Oh, and he linked to a post that everyone should see, about how John Warner’s retirement/no retirement decision affects the political ambitions of everyone else in the state, and how Felix Macacawitz’ ambitions figure into it. And not just because it confirms my speculation that Allen wants Warner’s seat, and that’s the reason Warner changed his mind about retiring.)
More locally, Kenton Ngo’s 750 Volts is excellent (and the kid’s still in high school!)
Phoenix:
I don’t know if this falls into the same category, but my favorite local blog site is MyLeftNutmeg here in CT. They were pretty big in the Ned Lamont campaign…extremely vocal against Joe Lieberman before we knew who Ned Lamont was. They cover local and national politics. If your interested in local blogs in CT, I suggest MLN.

Nothing about Fitz is ever OT here at firedoglake.
Myleftnutmeg.com!!!!!!
trifecta @ 9
Goode’s appalling behavior and scandals actually get covered by Waldo Jaquith and even in the regional newspapers. Unfortunately, the problem there seems to be the district’s voters, not the lack of coverage. But we’ll keep trying.
Sue said it better than me! :)
Oh the spin I’m in! Even after the Waxman hearing Friday, those g-damn right wing talking points persist.
Anybody who believes there is doubt about Plame’s status – now clearly and authoritatively established as classified and covert – after watching the hearing is slow on the uptake. Fitzgerald, Hayden and Plame said Plame’s status was classified and CIA Director Hayden said Plame was a covert CIA agent. Only a desperate sycophant, an insincere partisan or a dullard would question the accuracy of Hayden’s declaration and his unique position to make it authoritatively.
To the contrary, Toensing who is an expert on the IIPA law and not an expert on Plame’s status said Plame was “not covert as defined by IIPA”. The problem with that statement is that it is misleading in its construct. The IIPA is not the defining authority of a CIA agent’s status; it is the defining authority of the conditions under which miscreants that out a covert CIA agent can be criminally prosecuted. The only conclusion one can draw from expert knowledge about the IIPA is whether the conditions were met to prosecute a leak, not whether the agent was covert.
Toensing’s claim that Plame was “not covert as defined by IIPA” is unfounded on second count. Toensing claims to know Plame had not traveled outside the US as an undercover agent in the five years prior to the leak. To the contrary, Plame testified she did travel as an undercover agent in the five years prior to the leak. Even if one takes Toensing’s specious construct at face value – Plame was not covert because Plame was not out of the country undercover in the last five years – Toensing’s conclusion rests on a fact disputed by Plame’s testimony. While Plame has first hand knowledge, Toensing could not cite a source despite direct questions from Rep Watson.
Waxmen’s committee did not convene to investigate criminal violations of IIPA. His committee convened to investigate the handling of classified information in the executive branch in the CIA leak case. One has to wonder why Toensing labored so diligently to maintain the disproved belief that Plame was not covert.
“I will restore honor and integrity to the White House” “If there’s a leak out of the administration, I want to know who it is. And if a person has violated law, the person will be taken care of.” – GWB
Rove leaked classified information to Cooper and Novak. Rove still has security clearance. We learned from the Waxman hearing Friday that White House security has not investigated the leak despite a two month period after Novak’s column and before CIA referred the case to Justice.
Libby was convicted of lying, perjury and obstruction of justice in the CIA leak case investigation.
Cheney who wrote all of the talking points Libby and Cathie Martin used to discredit Wilson, an administration critic, has not explained his role in the leak. In the Libby trial, Fitzgerald said, “There is a cloud over the Vice President.” Neither Bush nor Cheney nor Rove will account for their roles in leaking classified information.
People who argue congressional oversight into this matter is driven solely by politics must also argue it is unimportant to hold administration officials accountable for unauthorized disclosures of classified information.
In Ohio we have Buckeye State Blog and Plunderbund.
And I’ve got a blog called Faithful Ohio.
Any enterprising New Yorkers might want to start a Dump Schumer blog. I’d contribute to that, especially after this sh*t:

As long as “Democrats” keep doing this kind of thing, Repukes (thanks Mean Jean!) will be able to come back in an election cycle or two and recliam the moral high-ground. The DLC-ocrats have got to be purged soon!

The Albany Project is doing excellent, groundbreaking work in New York State.
In particular, the Albany Project is playing a role in building a structure for regional blogs, unions, and interest groups to improve their coordination.
The Albany Project is also steadily blasting away at the intrenched Republican machine in Albany.

Or is actively on the take.
Exactly.
EvilDrMacPuma,
And from what part of the bog did your family crawl out of?
Well, you know, the CIA can call people spies or whatever in their halls. It is really up to a paid legal political hack who was in the federal government over 25 years ago to really determine what those silly little spy game players are up to.

OT, it would be nice if someone could leak/publish estimates of what it will cost to rebuild a covert identity for Valerie’s and Brewster Jennings’ covert replacements. Putting a price tag on something always helps the least brain dead to take some notice of reality.
Great job pointing out the hard work of the local blogosphere, especially in Minnesota. My Left of Center offering may not be as progressive as some of the ones you mentioned, but I am at least on the correct side of the fight *grin*

Hey, Flash! Good to see you!
I’m thinking that this might be Part One of a series on local blog journalism. I limited myself to three this time out because I wanted to keep the post fairly short, but Centristy is indeed a good blog and will be on the list if I ever get around to doing Part Two (and am not distracted by something shiny).
Good post, but one thing: while I think Kid Oakland is originally from or spent time in St. Paul, he’s a Californian now.

I’d like to second Flash on Dump Bachmann. The creator and proprietor of DB is a Log Cabin Republican.
And although some of the contributors are liberal and progressive Democrats, the site only rips on Bachmann. There’s no consistent touching on progressive principles and values.
For example, while the site trashes Bachmann for being a supporter of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR), it does so for her failing to take up offers of a hearing for the measure she introduced, rather than explaining what’s wrong with the legislation from a progressive point of view.
Mary McCurnin @ 38

I believe DMB broke the Michele Bachmann Astroturf story about her using her .Gov email, as well as they kept her crazed story about Iran having a plan to partition Iraq alive until it got picked up by Drudge, Rush (he thought she must be a Democrat with a crazy story like that on air) and the AP.
ANOTHER GREAT IDEA. How to clone http://dumpbachmann.blogspot.com/ for Virgil and Mean Jean Schmidt? Happy St. Patricks Day!

Which Timesman wrote that piece of crap?
Note that amid all the digs at her husband, there was one epithet missing: “Liar”. That’s because even the NYT knows that they cannot honestly apply that to Joe Wilson.
“Wouldn’t it be great if they could work with each other — y’know, have their own version of the AP Wire and all that?”
Well, ya know, I think this might be happening quite spontaneously.
F’rinstance, I found out abour FDL when someone logged onto “The Fix” (a WaPo blog) and mentioned thet FDL was covering the Libby trial live, and since that time I have not been satisfied with any other sources. Then I learned of Josh Marshall at TPM while I was here, and now I am well informed, instead of ganging up on me with Rove’s talking points, all the R’s I know now scatter when I come into the coffee shop.
Truth is such an empowering influence, it tends to chase off the dark angels whenever it peeks out from under the cover-up.
So inmany ways, it is US, the readers, commentors, the lurkers and the posters, who accomplish this melting together of blog wisdom, by sorting through the bullshit and relaying on the gems of truth and wisdom we all find in our daily searches.
Kind of a perpetual motion information machine, with cogs and gears and wormholes fro site to site. Nothing like it in history, and there’s a bible verse that describes “the blog’s” increasing influence and power.
No offense meant towards any fundies on board or lurking about, or the athiests among us either, this is just food for thought.
It’s a verse where Jesus is talking about himself, but read the whole verse, you will find some interesting analogies to “The Blogs”, especially the parts about the builders’ (the MSM?) arrogant rejections, and the last sentence, which is a pretty good description of what happens to people like George Allen when they get caught under “The Rock…”
The Truth is more powerful than the lie, for purely logical reasons.
Matthew 21, v 44, or Luke 20, v 18.
This was actually a good reminder to me to get my section with links to Ohio Blogs back on Howard-Empowered People. I upgraded to the new version of Blogger recently, and lost some things in the move.
One rather unique Ohio blog that had slipped my mind until now is called Meet the Bloggers. During the 2006 elections, they set up interviews with various candidtates, and bloggers could come and ask questions. Then they make the audio available online. Transcripts too. There was even one time I was actually able to make it to one of those “meet the candidate” things, and I met Zack Space, who is now the Representative for Ohio’s 18th District (Bob Ney’s old seat).

So anyone who exposes Bush and Cheney as liars is a chronic noisemaker? Can we assume they feel the same way about us (bloggers)?
True colors are flying, and whoever lets this stuff slip past the editor’s desk deserves to lose their job.
Its OK on a blog to twist and spin, no one takes it for granted it is the truth, until it has been exhaustively substantiated. But if the MSM wants the respect that comes with truly fair and balanced news vcoverage, they need to tighten up their ship, they are beginning to sound like just another contriveds conservative blog.

I stopped in at 7-Eleven just now, and I couldn’t resist looking at the Washington Times front-page coverage of the hearing, just for amusement value. Their headline was “Plame puts blame on Rove,” so I guess in winger-land that’s the most important point to come out. Overall, the part before the jump wasn’t too bad; rather than being blatantly misleading, it was just sprinkled with weasel-words that would let true believers dismiss it:
Hmmm, I guess any hearing by a congressional committee with both Democrats and Republicans is automatically “partisan” if the Democrats are in charge. The other weaseling is “one of the most well-known secret agents in CIA history,” which I’m sure dimbulb wingnuts like Lynn Westmoreland will read that and be unable to remember that she’s “well-known” because she was outed by the White House.
Ding, ding, ding! She’s making money! And she’s a Democrat! (Making money is admirable if you’re a Republican, and suspicious if you’re a Dem.) Gosh, that must mean she’s only doing this for self-promotion, and heck, she probably tricked the Cheneyites into outing her so she could cash in!

That is true, I notice today that the righty blogs have given up the assertion that Plame was not covert and instead are promoting the long-debunked assertion that somehow her own husband outed her (!$#*&$^!). Because they don’t care about the truth – they can act without shame. In their world – there is no objective truth. Whatever you call it – ‘morally bankrupt’, ‘delusional’, not members of the ‘reality based community’ – at its core, the denial of truth is the foundation of their beliefs.
Fortunately, only 30% of our country (and unfortunately certain members of the the media) are still susceptible to the garbage they put out. And each day – more are waking up.

I don’t know any of these bloggers personally but I read them faithfully. They are Hoosier bloggers and could use some attention:
Taking Down Words which is written by Jennifer Wagner, our Dem Party Communications director. She’s great and has a terrific sense of humor.
Masson’s Blog a Citizen’s Guide to Indiana is great for local legislative issues and just an all around good guy.
Blue Indiana is the headquarters of Indiana’s left-leaning blogosphere….
Trifles is….well I’ll just quote the web site: Whatever comes to mind about politics and life in Indiana: the food, the people, trying to make a living. Completely biased against stupidity and favoring humor and the Democratic Party in post-industrial factory town where the most culture can be found in the yogurt section of the local grocery stores. Still, we persist in our search for a meaningful life.
Lots more links at the websites above. My favorite in TDW just because she smacks Mitch Daniels around so excellently. Calls him the Lil’ Guy.

Let me second the endorsement of Blue Jersey [”covering the Garden State like a rug”]. It’s a great progressive resource with links to the NJ affiliates of DFA and other organizations, a list of all the Drinking Liberally locations, and links to most all progressive and liberal bloggers in the state [including Mr. NJP’s blog PeaceWatch NJ. It’s a great community [like the ‘Lake, only local].
Toensing was on Hannity & “whatever” last night (yeah, I watched) and “whatever” actually posited to her that either she or Valerie was lying under oath.

Hey, looseheadprop! How you doing? (waving back)
I noticed the trend you are talking about recently. The Rolla Daily News (a mid Missouri, smaller paper) attempted to do some blogging, but it didn’t end up lasting. I hear there are many newspapers that are paying people only for blogging. School newspapers have got into it too, like The Missouri Miner (www.themissouriminer.com), but I suppose that is no surprise as students are in a generation that grew up with blogging.
I agree with #93 that Not Very Bright is currently the best political blog in South Carolina.
