Valerie Plame was covert.
Like, Duh!

11:14 am ET:
Westmoreland going for opening comedy, auditioning to be the next Huckleberry Graham. But, is he a Paul Linde bachelor like Graham?
Huckleberry Westmoreland fishing to see if Valerie was sloppy with her own secret status, ad going after Joe. As we say in the fishing world, he's getting skunked. Sorry, Redstate! Sorry, LittleGreenRacists!
Kucinich covering groud that seems a little scattered. Sorry Kucinich fans. He is asking questions to suggest a conscious plan from the White House, almost to say (but not quite) "conspiracy."
11:19 am ET:
Ms. Watson getting some things nailed down for the record. More headaches for Byron York, who's in The Corner going "La la la I can't hear you!" Okay, he's actually staring down intently at his laptop, hiding from Marcy, but still. . .
11:25 am ET:
Mr. Lynch, sounding very New England. . . I want to hear him say, "Can't get theyah from heyah." But I digress.
This chart the Dem side keeps working off is nicely done. Lynch doing preamble. Getting to the CIA' decision making process to send Joe to Niger.
Valerie, under oath: I DID NOT RECOMMEND, DID NOT SEND, DID NOT HAVE THE AUTHORITY.
Did everyone get that? Valerie is now telling the full story of the way Joe was selected to investigate the yellowcake rumors. This needs to be recorded and saved in video, fer shur.
Fresh thread for continued testimony from Valerie Plame Wilson.

Great to meet you…
Yeah! Sic ‘em Waxman!
And there’s gonna be a little something Pay-Palled to FDL this week, too. You guys ROCK!
Oh, Henry!
Will Vicky Toe have the nerve to say that Plame wasn’t covert?
Westmoreland is going for the Southern charm, slip a knife in when they aren’t looking routine. (CHS: As though Valerie hasn’t dealt with people far more dangerous than a smarmy politician in her day job. Sheesh — talk about underestimating your audience.)
Outstanding job, everyone! Thanks!
{{{Rachel Corrie}}}} – on today, the fourth anniversary of her death in Gaza. May the truth be told!
May I simply say that Rep. Westmoreland is a, ummm, fecal matter exit? His opening remarks to VP were beyond patronizing and dismissive. Pass the TP.
Just what about COVERT that repug’s not understand??
Showing the chart again….
Both Wilsons, Mr. Westmoreland. Both American Heroes!
Westmoreland, you make Doug Feith look like Einstein.
Justice! @

Yes.
This has been another edition of simple answer to simple questions.
VP: No leaks of an agent’s identity that I am aware of by their own government.
Vicky T-bag must be cleaning the vomit off of her back right about now.
-GSD
Can I say how happy I am today?
Kucinick is using Pat’s triel exhibits, icing on the cake
Ooh, good answer: ever any leaked agent–not by one’s own goverment!
Anybody have access to a pdf of that chart?
EPU’d
Rove Pink lady only stands while V is speaking, someone tackle her!
Lord, I’m giddy. Is this as good as I think it is?
THANKS 2 ALL AT FDL….YOU FRIGGIN’ ROCK!!!
Kuscinich: one of my questions – is why – why did this happen to you?
Draws an analogy to the fired US attorneys. This could be part of a larger pattern.
Oh, yes…”part of a larger pattern.”
RICO. Suave.
I must say, I am quite proud of my NH Congressman, Paul Hodes’ quick and direct questions.
I noticed Hodes was one of the first ones in to the hearing room and was poring over papers too.
Very effective.
Booyah to Elijah Cummings too.
-GSD
KUCH!!
looseheadprop @ 15
Why reinvent the wheel?
Of course, that would lead me to say Waxman ought to have hired Marcy for some staff prep work.
Does naybody know? is this a full day hearing or 1/2day?
I’m trying to decide if I;m going into the office today.
I have SOOOO much work on my desk, but how can I miss this?
Kucinich asks the big “why”.
Why did this happen to you in particular?
Ties into the USAs.
Kucinich ties in the Attorney Purge to the outing. Other cases of the admin going after people for political reasons.
if that’s a Rovian plant – am hoping real Code Pink folks are there to, um,
pantsunmaskEd*ard Teller @

And that’s tough to do!
I just have to say that I’m relieved today. Valerie gets the speak. General Hayden obviously decided to clarify her status, which actually speaks volumes when you think about it. Sort of a quiet shot over the bow…
RevDeb @ 17
I was going to ak that earlier. Hopefully, Waxman’s staff will put it up at his site. They may have to make a simplified version for Westmoreland.
LHP at 26 — My understanding is there are two more panels after Valerie, if that helps.
Dennis!
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 18
I think that is Libby in drag trying to smokescreen the camera framing.

looseheadprop @ 26
CSpan only has it going to 1 pm
oh, he’s tying Valerie to Foster, Shinseki, O’Neill, USAs…
Kucinich doing a nice, nice job on tying the pattern together.
Connect the dots….
Peterr,
We should all be urging that idea (Waxman hiring EW) on him and anybody else on th eCOmmittee
LHP, I’m with you. Trying to work, refresh, listen, and watch at the same time. EEEEK.
K – after showing a pattern of politicizing intimidating investigations
quoting Hubris – Amb Wilson – smear as warning.
Ok… Kucinich really hitting all those questions we all have had….
looseheadprop — agenda here http://oversight.house.gov/story.asp?ID=1205
Other Reps’ office told me they didn’t think this would go past 1:00 pm, but at that time they did not have this many witnesses called.
Thanks for this, I only can rely on CNN (not exactly one of the more “reliable sources”) for such coverage, as my computer does not play image/video files at all well so online CSPAN doesn’t work as a choice for me (yes I know, stone age computer) so whatever ends up here lets me know more than I otherwise would, especially at anything approaching near real time.
Again, thank you from this Bluenoser.
RevDeb @ 36
It should be streaming in its entirety at the link below. This link is MUCH better quality and sound than CSPAN. I highly recommend it:
http://www.oversight.house.gov/story.asp?ID=1205
Kucinich: Was the VP looking over your shoulder intimidating?
Valerie: YES.
Thanks, Maybe REally really late to work today
Valerie speaks the Shooter’s name wrt politicizing intelligence.
C’mon Rockefeller– where’s phase 2.
Watson says malfeasance in government.
Cheney uses bird shot…. it makes a much larger pattern…. I’m just sayin’.
Kucinich!
If I could be allowed to name this hearing, I’d call it Treason – for Republican Dummies.
Diane Watson D-CA
Watson revealing what being an ambassador is, and how serious the security precautions are taken.
looseheadprop @ 26
Can you tape it?
Oh God! I wanted so badly for Kucinich to ask, “Did you every meet Mr. Cheney?”
Diane Watson D-CA trained as ambassador blindfolded taken to site general gave her folder with info. knows about confidential. Novak of all lpeople.
Watson: I’m furious and she looks it.
I think I know why Victoria Toensing (Natasha) is going before the committee later today.
She’s going to have to admit her assertions about Valerie Plame’s covert status were groundless.
Watson-As an ambassador, I went through the training. I know how this works, and I’m furious this happened to you, by Robert Novak, of all people.
HA!
Oh…* SMACK * to Novak!!
Nice job, Rep. Watson!!
Clapping by audience for Rep. Watson’s smackdown of Novack!
GSD @ 35
I don’t think so – Libby has better skin.
Robert Novak dissed. Good for you, Diane.
Ooh, Rep. Watson is my new favorite person!
I hope somebody asks if in her official capacity she ever met shooter or scooter. Were they actually gunning for her and Joe. A twofer if she wasn’t playing ball
“And Robert Novak of all people!”
*room erupts in derisive laughter*
This just gets better.
Ten Commandments Westmoreland: From his 1st 2 sentences, I just knew it had to be him. I don’t know which is more disturbing, the republicans putting him up to run or the people who voted for him.
RevDeb @ 36
I’ve got as hunch they know how active the hearings are for their viewers, and will switch it to C-SPAN 3.
WAtson Smacking down Vicky now!!!!
And Roy Blunt!
Righteous Rage!
People minimizing your service by saying you weren’t at risk and not undercover because you worked at a “desk job.”
And quotes Republicans saying it.
I think VP’s analogy was excellent: A general coming home from the field of battle is still a general.
Sorry if this has been said. but…. we are witnessing a John Dean moment. This is the anti-Ollie North hearing. True hero.
Watson ripping to shreds the
DESK JOB lie!
Watson – some people still trying to minimizing your job because worked at desk. quotes roy blunt at face the nation, Desk job everyone knows that she went there everyday. Were you well versed in rules of handling classified info?
V-yes
Pink sat down.
ET
The weekend is coming up. They will be replaying this often I would guess.
Plame: Op officers whether in field or HQ we are given training to ensure we are not being followed and that our status is being protected.
Valerie: Operations officers are given surveillance detection training, so that they understand that their status is protected. They carefully guard identity and job status.
Valerie
We are trianing in surveilance detection so we can get to and from CIA HQ without being detected
Toensing wrote the law about outing agents- so she is probably there at gooper invitation to show that no one broke it.
http://codepinkalert.org/index.php
Code Pink email address. Write Medea Benjamin to inquire whether the disgusting vision in pink is affiliated with Code Pink. Chew ass as you see fit.
Just stopped my Tivo to get some tea and say hi.
My favorite moment so far was the GOP apologist who spoke first and kept implying that the White House didn’t know Valerie was a NOC. So the snew spin is now it wasn’t a crime becasue they were idiots and didn’t know the were revealing a NOC. OH give me a break!
Well back to the fun!!!!!!
You know what I like them to ask Vicky, what administration official or CIA person gave you your erroneous information about Plame? Why the hell would Vicky know anything about this woman?!
Watson is great.
But it just amazes me how much hand-holding of idiots has to be undertaken in this hearing!
Remedial basics in the meaning of simple English words.
Sheesh.
Is there any “desk Job” exceptions to the rules governing keeping classifiec emplyment satus secret?
No COngresswoman
Setting up who can and cannot have access to classified info. Watson’s going at the Admin’s revelation. Any deskjob exceptions for CIA Agents? Valerie: No.
Watson: are there any “desk job” exceptions to the rule against exposing classified info?
Plame- no.
Rep Watson emphasizing speaking s l o w l y so they can understand. V smiling.
Lynch is a DINO from MA. Can’t stand the bastard.
rwcole @ 80
Westmoreland got shot down before he could drum up the courage to ask Val out for bible study. Vickie will give him a second chance.
Rep. Lynch up now
Toensing has to be really regretting her invitation to follow this.
Someone on the committee ought to say a few words about the training and instructions THEY get on the handling of classified information.
pretty well-organized hearing. way to go Henry. not too much overlap. some tight questions from Hodes and Cummings, then widening the scope from Kucinich.
Mr Lynch up
Is Toensing being called as a Waxman witness or as a witness for rethug rebuttal?
rwcole @ 80
that could blow up in her face. If what happened to Valerie couldn’t be prosecuted, because of the way Toensing drafted the statute, then Toensing has some blame as an attorney — she didn’t do her job of protecting the identities of covert agents, which was the point of the statute.
Republican elitism on parade. Rove thinks it is beneath his child to work “picking lettuce”. Roy Blunt thinks a “desk job” is menial work.
Nice work numb-nuts.

mayan @ 96
iirc– the pugs invited her.
Ed*ard Teller @ 90
Wouldn’t be surprised if she laid back and opened her legs for him as soon as he was called on. “Ooh, Lynnie, Rock my world!”
Lynch can’t pronounce Niger
“20 times is a deliberate attempt to destroy your status as a covert agent.” Rep. Lynch.
Lynch-
Outing was a deliberate attempt to discount Joe’s statements about Yellow cake from Niger.
Lynch clearly has NOT done his homework and is struggling with talking points (good talking points, though) and is jusyt trying to say th words osmebody else put in front of him
mayan @ 96
I would think Repube rebuttal. If Waxman called her I hope she has a flack jacket on.
-GSD
Twenty times is a deliberate attempt to out Valerie. Lynch is saying it outright.
Lynch d-MA deliberate attempt to discount statements of your husband. 20 occasions when people attempted to destroy your status. Once or twice might be a mistake, but 20 times is deliberate.
Whoever did Lynch’s staff work seems to have done a pretty decent job
Christy Hardin Smith @ 102
To which the camera shows Valerie nodding in agreement.
did the Repub’s give up and go home already?
Scarecrow @ 97
I’ve always felt that it is stupid to write a law that is impossible to prosecute. I was glad that VP indicated that they should review the IIPA statute.
Ah ha–were you involved in sending your husband to Niger. What’s the real story? Give us your side.
My wife is there to put out the trash, to discount her. Heh.
Trying to watch online (sound and video intermittently get blipped) and read these comments at the same time…
Excuse my ignorance, but what’s “Code Pink”?
looseheadprop @ 103
He’s a useless anti-choice, pro-war DINO. Not surprised he’s not up on this.
But he does give her the opening to deny sending Joe on a boondoggle.
I liked the his wife sent him as if he was sent to take out the trash..
Lynch admitting he is henpecked. It’s cute
Did you make decision to send Amb. Wilson to Niger? VP: No. I wasn’t involved in making the decision — Valerie going to lay out sequence of events on this now. (This is going to be good.)
Ed*ard Teller @ 90
He’s the guy who couldn’t remember the 10 commandments (the ones he sponsored a bill for displaying on gov’t property), right?
So he won’t know the bit about “coveting your neighbor’s wife” — and Icky may know, but might not care — GOP family values in action!
If I were going to send my wife somewhere, it wouldn’t be Niger. Got some laughs.
Lynch – did you have anything to do with sending your husband to Niger.
V – No, i did not … no nepotism. i am delighted i am under oath.
I don’t really agree with the Kucinich criticism. I don’t think he was implying conspiracy; he was showing patterns of retaliatory behavior that reinforce Ambassador Wilson’s assertion that exposing his wife’s status was a deliberate attempt to intimidate others from contradicting WH claims in any number of areas.
.
V-”No, I didn’t send my husband to Niger.”
Eat it, you stupid goopers!
Lynch may be trying to get his Demo cred back. seems to be doing ok. trashing “the wife sent him” meme.
May I say, as the mother of two blonde bombshells:
Today is a great day for blonde bombshells.
This is as good as John Dean before the Ervin Committee.
-
Plame wants to set the record straight about Niger. I’m delighted to be under oath.
I am delighted that I am under oath and able to reply to you, Congressman.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 115
I didn’t recomend, didn’t suggest, etc.
Another talking point bites the dust
DAMNATION! She is killing it.
As I sit here at home, reading these comments in real time, I find myself sobbing – with relief. I have hope we’ll get our country back and rejoin the human race. May the Creative Forces of the Universe stand beside us, and guide us, through the Night with the Light from Above (in a metaphorical sense).
I’m glad to hear that even CIA training as a special operations officer doesn’t make putting twin two year olds to bed any easier.
Jane S. @ 110
Yeah, it is a singular sign of Vicky’s total failure as a lawyer that she wrote a law theat wasa so poorly thought out that it cannot be used .
She wrote a law that is totally in effective.
Who would want to hire someone that incapable of thinking things through?
You know when you are drafting legislation, you have time to draft and re-draft, not like blogging which is done with almost no time to think before youtype
Tithonia @ 122
Does this day toally lay to rest the myth of the dumb blond? Forever?
Victoria Toenail will develop alcoholism before her testimony and have to go into immediate rehab.
-
Wow, Cheney et al even cherrypicked how Wilson was sent to Niger..color me not surprised. They were desperate and they were feeling threatened!
Bam, nailed that one on the head. A firm “NO” when asked if she had anything to do with sending her husband to Niger. The had “nothing” to do with it.
Oh, lord, I am SO happy the whole “junket” crap is being cleared up!!
Would someone please talk some sense into the fellow wearing the pink “Impeach Bush” outfit. He isn’t doing anything to help his own cause, he is doing the opposite.
I think Lynch gets an assist or two here.
Yay! Lynch is pointing out that it was the “Additional Views” part of the Sen. Select Intel. Report.
cs, arat is bread @ 119
Forgive me, but even though I’m not a conspiracy theorist by nature, I fail to see how a pattern of intimidation and retaliation by the same people toward the same basic objective fails to rise to the level of conspiracy.
I hope Scooter is watching this.
Scooter, “deal or no deal?”
looseheadprop @

Two words – Ann Coulter.
Any questions?
looseheadprop @ 131
Jane did that years ago.
We seem to have run out of repuglicans on the committee. Maybe they didn’t get the memo? Or maybe they did.

They’re calling the limo service as we speak.
#130 LHP–A friend of mine who is a big deal first amendment lawyer and who has commented on the Plame case to the media had done research on the law and told me that it was virtually impossible to prosecute.
Heh Van Hollen going after the WMDs in Iraq crap the Admin peddled, then straight into Joe’s story. He’s going after the political revenge angle, yes?
Henceforth, this day shall be known as the day Valerie Plame explained accountability to Republicans. She’s nailing everything, including the 3 bozo repubs who attached their lies to the Senate Select Committee report.
angie @ 125
One of the best lines of the day.
That’s the tee shirt quote. I will have so many tee shirts with writing on them this summer. Sigh
Contrast with Alberto who would not agree to testify before senate Judiciary even when it was under control of lapdog Specter!!!
V at desk, someone came by to tell her about Cheney’s request. Someone else walkilng by heard this and suggested Joe, as he knew that joe had experience in Africa, had been sent by CIA in oher occasions about nuclear matters, heroic actions in embassy in baghdad under sadam hussain. Asked if he would want to go? She was ambivelent as had 2yr old twins she would be alone with. but she did send an email to her chief.
Capital @ 112
From their web site: CODEPINK is a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement working to end the war in Iraq, stop new wars, and redirect our resources into healthcare, education and other life-affirming activities. CODEPINK rejects the Bush administration’s fear-based politics that justify violence, and instead calls for policies based on compassion, kindness and a commitment to international law. With an emphasis on joy and humor, CODEPINK women and men seek to activate, amplify and inspire a community of peacemakers through creative campaigns and a commitment to non-violence.
(seems unlikely they’d park one of their own in this setting to be an obnoxious distraction, but I asked for clarity about this.)
Van Hollen’s my Representative – go, Chris!

I was wondering about that also…
QuentinCompson @ 132

“karl rove still holds a security clearance today after leaking my name desite the president’s assurance that he would fire whoever did so.” Bad paraphrase but that was a good one.
Barbara @ 150, thanks for the explanation.
I think Cumming just dispatched an aide to have a word of prayer with our friend in pink.
Van Hollen – reminding us of chimp’s promise that anyone involved in leaking would not be part of the admin. Do you think there are still people in the admin involved in the leak?

Do you see the women in the back with the hot pink crown and IMPEACH BUSH T-SHIRT ON. How’d she get through security?
This hearing is outstanding for so many reasons, but chief among them in my opinion is, unlike the Alito/Roberts hearings, the Democrats are actually working together to paint a clear picture of what needs to be said. They are systematically destroying all the right-wing spin.
Maybe they learned something from Fitz.
Van Hollen: WH will not stand up to those who undermine intelligence officers
TiredFed @ 154
No. He needs a strong primary challenge. Better yet, a primary loss.
Chucklehead side of the gov’t still obsessed with media articles etc. Now one thing they continued to fail to mention…To this Day the WH and this administration has never backtracked that those NIger claims were false and 16 words should not have been in the SOTU. Lets not lose sight of that still … Joe Wilson’s claims about that still hold true today.
You just know these Dems want Rove so badly they hurt.
Are the republicans bailing out? Have they stopped trying to use their “talking points” as they have been so debunked?
Guitar_Playing_Bastard @ 141
Does this day totally lay to rest the myth of the female dumb blonde?
More importantly does this day show what an exceptionally intelligent person Valerie Plame Wilson is?
Does this day show, more than anything, how it can be nothing other than the highest form of hubris to remove this level of ability from the field of play in international affairs, merely for political gain?
Does this day show what a big shitbag Dick Cheney is?

Any minute now I expect to hear a BREAKING NEWS announcement from the WH that Osama (not Obama) bin Laden has been captured. Which will of course be followed tomorrow by a false alarm announcement but not until all traces of today’s Plame testimony have been removed from the headlines and cable news reports.

How’s it going Biodun? Great day, huh!
Sarbanes -it’s been suggested that your status was disclosed accidently -

Son, I think (no link, sorry)
looseheadprop @ 156
Thanks, guys. I thought I was nuts when I found the tears flowing.
EvilDrPuma @ 139
Yeah, maybe it’s just semantics. I thought the original post was dismissive of Kucinich’s questions, calling them “scattered” and then saying he’s trying to suggest deliberate “conspiracy”, implying he’s a “conspiracy theorist” wack job. I was just trying to respond to that. I think of a conspiracy as a secret plot to achieve a particular outcome. But I see your point, if control through intimidation is the aim, then there certainly has been a tactical conspiracy to achieve it.
Westmoreland just nailed Libby talking about the CPD officers who asked about Joe Wilson going to Niger…
“How could they forget a name….??????”
He just can’t believe it!!!!

Be on the look out for a “red” alert from Homeland Security!
Westmoreland! A Jagoff! He has so many questions about CONFLICTING testimony. There would never be enough time! He speaks so slowly he could be speaking testerday and the words just getting hear to day. There is no conflicting testimony. It is enough to know there are very few on the right attending. I bet they are there when Toensing testifies.
The dude even used his hands and arms to make “QUOTES.” What a pissant.
Westmoreland is a FASCIST!!! pure and simple
Someone should tell him the mouse doesn’t help. You can’t make chicken salad out of chicken crap. Now he is talking aqbout more than one source. After the Admin. used opne source. Curveball.
Why can’t they go into closed session with Plame after the open session has established once and for all just what her status was?

I’m betting on Anthrax at the Capitol.
When will the Democrats on the committee point out the fact that their Republican “colleagues” on the committee are more concerned with protecting their Party and it’s boy king than protecting the safety of the American public. Take the gloves off and expose them for the authoritarians/totalitarians that they are!
sh*t. where is coverage going?
dang. anyone know how to get the webcast plugin for the Commitee website?
AAAARRRRRGGGG!
Why is C-Span breaking for this pro forma session?
I’m hoping it’s brief.
They left the hearing for a prayer? I’ve lived 73 years, married 49 years to the same woman, 4 years in the military, 55 years in the workforce, 32 in federal service, 2 lovely intelligent daughters and 4 terriffic grandchildren. I did it with the help and partnership of my family. All without “prayer.” This war is being fought in Iraq not because of terrorists or WMD but, to paraphrase Bill Maher, Bush’s imaginary diety is better than their imaginary diety.
