This week's YouTube and playlist include the 2007 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Kind of a strange year: Eddie Van Halen (in re-hab) and David Lee Roth were no-shows, The Ronettes performed and accepted their induction whilst their "idiosyncratic"-turned-suspect producer Phil Spector awaits trial for murder.
Grandmaster Flash was eloquent in his statement on his website about his induction:
"It's a wonderful feeling to be remembered as one of the architects that pioneered an idea that the whole world fell madly in love with. It's called Hip Hop".
I was a bit surprised that Patti Smith accepted her induction (in honor of her late husband Fred Sonic Smith of the MC5), but not without a slight disclaimer from her in the New York Times:
"On the eve of this event I asked myself many questions. Should an artist working within the revolutionary landscape of rock accept laurels from an institution? Should laurels be offered? Am I a worthy recipient? I have wrestled with these questions and my conscience leads me back to Fred and those like him – the maverick souls who may never be afforded such honors. Thus in his name I will accept with gratitude."
I used to think that being inducted was so regal and important, but The Sex Pistols lampooned The Hall last year in their flamboyant rejection of their induction and kind of tarnished the event for me, thankfully I suppose:
In a handwritten note posted on their website, they called the institution "urine in wine." "We're not your monkeys, we're not coming. You're not paying attention."
The note further criticized the Hall of Fame for offering "fame at $25,000 if we paid for a table or $15,000 to squeak up in the gallery." The group's letter acknowledged that the organization's judges are anonymous, but denounced them as "music industry people."
In the last couple of years, the Hall has inducted some artists that were not even supported enough by ‘the Industry" to get them on the radio, but because of these artists' (Ramones, Sex Pistols) obvious importance to musical and pop culture history "the Industry" is jumping on the "we always loved you" bandwagon to save face.
The Sex Pistols hand written note remains on their website.

WAXMAN!
I’m crushing Victoria Toensing’s head
So Michael Anthony was there to accept on behalf of the band Van Halen? That just doesn’t seem right…
Mack @ 2: ROFLAMO 707!!!
EPUed:
Great coverage today, FDL heroes! I worked today and missed all of the testimony, so it was great to come here & get a good roundup of what happened.
I’m watching “Tucker” right now, and he’s actually pretty belligerent about how Armitage is the one (he believes) leaked Plame’s identity, and he wants to know why Armitage hasn’t been called to testify or has been charged with any crime. Curious what you think of it.
Icky VIcky should be cast by the CHICKEN LADY!
note: fixed the link.
I love the Pistols irreverance and would expect no less. But you know, I don’t see any reason to cede them any more authority in their views on the HoF than I do on say, the abortion views they advanced on NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS…
Hugh Blowhard Hewitt makes a funny on Tucker! He insisted that when it comes to the Plame identity leak, “nobody is interested in this story whatsoever. It’s going through one news cycle, and that will be it.” Even Tucker laughed and said, “well, she did get over a million dollars to write a book, so I think people are paying attention to it”. Heh!
Perhaps someone could get Toensing and Hewitt to do their own altered reality TV show. Those two would probably work very well together, saying things that are so obviously false while people laugh in their faces.
Question from last Thread
Was I dearming or did anyone else notice this too? When GOP Mouthpiece Davis asked the man from Archives “who has the power to declassify stuff” he allowed the guy to say that the president has the power and then cut him off when he tried to mention the VP.
What is the VP power to declassify stuff?
Lotf
The rightards gloss right over the intent portion of the criminal statute while ignoring the negligence aspect which makes it astounding that these people are allowed to keep their clearances and jobs.
Not a convictable criminal is the level of competence we are supposed to accept.
It’s like saying that it’s OK to knock off a pedestrian with our automobile as long as you were talking on the phone and not aiming at them intentionally.
Just wanted to say “hi” from D.C. Have a good weekend everybody!
On thread topic.
I suspect Lydon was more incensed at being asked to pay than at the whole ethical thing.
I bet he would have showed up for $25K plus expenses.
Filthy lucre indeed.
Next year – The Stooges!
I have mixed views on the RRHoF. On one level I view it like the Sex Pistols do, as just so much more Industry wankery. On the other hand, it does recognize the great artists who deserve memorialization of their works somewhere, and for the Industry to endorse their works in this way shows the respect of their peers.
Wonder if the Hall will frame that letter and display it. That’s beautiful!
two ton boa!
Sammy Hagar too but Velvet Revolver performed the Van Halen songs. I didn’t watch the show, just read about it.
SPARKS!
I love the YouTube of Patti Smith with the kids. I dont remember seeing this episode and I watched that show all the time!
Seemed more like an SCTV skit, with Eugene Levy as the moderator.
Sorry to once again be off cycle and off topic but my husband just showed me this, saying it reminds him more and more of his Vietnam experience.
Suicide note of Col Ted Westhung, from June 5 2005 in Baghdad:
Thanks for telling me it was a good day until I briefed you. [Redacted name] — You are only interested in your career and provide no support to your staff — no msn [mission] support and you don’t care. I cannot support a msn that leads to corruption, human right abuses and liars. I am sullied — no more. I didn’t volunteer to support corrupt, money grubbing contractors, nor work for commanders only interested in themselves. I came to serve honorably and feel dishonored. I trust no Iraqi. I cannot live this way. All my love to my family, my wife and my precious children. I love you and trust you only. Death before being dishonored any more. Trust is essential — I don’t know who trust anymore. [sic] Why serve when you cannot accomplish the mission, when you no longer believe in the cause, when your every effort and breath to succeed meets with lies, lack of support, and selfishness? No more. Reevaluate yourselves, cdrs [commanders]. You are not what you think you are and I know it.
COL Ted Westhusing
Life needs trust. Trust is no more for me here in Iraq.
(Lengthy article on alternet today, but I’m not up to speed on linking. Westhusing was working with Petraeus If someone can help me on linking this, you can all find it. It is a devasting read.)
“Rock and Roll: A powerful force for kids, myself included.”
Donita! Great clip.
Friday Spin’s light up *my* life.
Thanks to you and Fini for the work, much appreciated.

Ugh. And Sammy….sad.
Donita: I slammed danced with you and a bandmate way back when. I think you were in Madison, WI recording with Butch Vig or something like that, and I was there watching a friend’s band play. About 5 people there total, and we were all getting a little rowdy. It was a fun time. The next day, my friend was like, “Dude, that was L7!” I had no idea.
Nice to cross paths again. You rock!
If that was the case, I think that that’s plenty to get incensed about. Inductees are allowed two, count’em, two free tickets. I’m sure that there are plenty of inductees that might want their CHILDREN to attend without having to pay $2,500 a pop.

Tommy @26
Ha! You said it, I didn’t.
The female Mick? Gross!!! I’m a straight man and I’d rather have sex with Mick.
I wonder if she was mad that they only took questions from girls? She’s not fond of other female artists………fact. Yes, Pattie Smith is great. Come on……………..using her dead husband as an excuse! LAME!!!!!!!!!!!!
Come on Dave, give me a break. ONE BREAK COMEN UP!
Great clip Donita.
Tommy Roto
L7 were PERFECT LADIES that always behaved themselves and NEVER ENGAGED IN HIJINX of any kind. There were NEVER any controversial incidents or angry press run ins. Right, Donita? Perfect angels they were, with halos and beatific smiles.
bonkers@22
L7 getting a little rowdy??? Highly doubtful.
Oh yea, sorry. It was complete debauchery!
Donita:
Thanks so much for the Patty Smith clip. I always look forward to your list. It is a highlight of my Fridays!
For any music fan who has had to endure a standing-room venue in LA while watching the “industry” people enjoying confortable (yet exclusive) seating, contempt for “the industry” is an easy thing to muster. Sometime in the 80s, rock fans became livestock.
What Johnny Rotten expressed is a pure punk rock sentiment undiluted by sycophancy. It’s just as exciting as it was thirty years ago.
Topanga-lib @ 8:
We’ve never gotten a definitive answer to this, but it’s like that the answer is “none.” Bush delegated classification authority to Cheney by executive authority, but being empowered to classify doesn’t mean you’re empowered to declassify. And “insta-declassification” without notification to the originating agency or record-keeping is BS, because the originating agency has to adjust for the fact that the information is no longer secret — the only purpose to such a thing is to be able to leak for political purposes without telling national security professionals who might object.
Donita,
I in no way disparage the right of artists to be adequately compensated.
And I entirely understand that such compensation is the exception rather than the rule.
I just have always gotten a kick out of how Lydon manages to represent himself as being above things.
kudos to patti smith!
If there is any justice in this world or the next Cheney was watching todays’ hearing and has the most massive indigestion! I hope he can hear the footsteps of truth, justice and the American Way coming up fast from behind!
Hi Donita,
I assume that the Boston song being in the playlist has something to do with Brad Delp’s passing this week? I heard that song innumerable times during the year it came out blaring out from college dorm windows. More than occasionally someone would hear it blaring out of mine, too.
Tommy@26
somehow I ended up replying to you at #25
Here’s how irrelevant the hall of fame is. year after year, the one band that is conspicuous by it’s absence is KISS. laugh if you will about their overblown theatrics and marginal musical abilities, but the undeniable fact is that, if it were not for KISS, many hall of famers would not be there, or anywhere, for that matter.
also, donita, is it true that you were almost in an all-female KISS cover band called MISS?
Jane Hamsher – if you’re still here at da lake you have mail. ;~)
David Gregory making it happen on Hardball.
Mack@31
No worries. I don’t always completely agree with Lydon, but I always get a kick out of him. He throws verbal dirt clods like nobody else and a lot of times (including this one), I agree with him. He also makes no apologies for wanting to make money himself which is his right.
eric the great
how ’bout a tiny kiss?
Tiny Kiss! Not again! Hahahahahahahaaha!
egregious@38
Thanks for the David Gregory on Hardball head’s up and just tuned in. Don’t miss Chris Matthews one whit. ;~)
eric the great @36
No, sorry to burst your rock and roll fantasy bubble. I could never pull-off Paul. He’s way prettier than I am.
Donita Sparks @ 2:17 pm (#39) – It just strikes me as inappropriate that someone would be expected to pay $25K to be honored for what one’s life’s work presumably earned.
NOT TRUE! NO ONE IS PRETTIER THAN YOU ARE. AND ,IF YOU DID PULL OFF PAUL, HE WOULD BE MIGHTY GRATEFUL(WINK)
KKKarl regrets he couldn’t get to you personally…
btw
YouTube has Lydon on Judge Judy
A hoot and a half
Almost as much fun as Tom Snyder
(those were the days)
The inductee is not charged, and can bring two people with them, but if they want a whole table on the floor during the ceremony they are charged $25k is my understanding of how it works. $15k for a section of seats reserved in the balcony.
This one is smokin’ HOT!
Look at the crowd go WILD~!
Time to commute home

MES 50th Birthday show for DL
gloomrider@29
I was giddy with excitment when I heard about it last year.
He’s still got it!
bonkers@3, somethings wrong with the Van Halen brothers and it’s not just drugs. They treat their lead singers, and even their backup singer (& bass player) Michael Anthony, like disposable parts.
Without Roth, there would never have been a Van Halen. He had the big personality that brought them to prominence. They dump Roth because they can’t stand it that he’s the main focus of the band. They’re lucky enough to land Hagar. The band gets bigger. Then they treat him like he’s just a disposable employee.
Now, with interest kind of high in another VH tour, they’re going to dump Anthony so that Eddie’s son can live his rock&roll fantasies. The band may have their name, but just because people playing in the band share that name doesn’t make it the real VH.
They should look at the Beach Boys. Does anyone think of a band featuring Mike Love, Bruce Johnson, and a bunch of unknown players the real thing? It’s a Vegas Act at best. That’s where the VH brothers are headed.
Not showing up to be inducted shows them to be insane.
Hey Donita! Are you doing SXSW this weekend?
Donita
John Lydon’s comments to Hall of Fame inspired me to watch every interview I could find on youtube.
He is one funny man.
thx!
The world needs and needed the Sex Pistols. God bless them. IMHO, tied with The Beatles for the most important band in rock ‘n roll.
Fuck the RRHOF…Buch of self-serving, self-congratulatory day-late-and-a-dollar-short bullshit from the humps and hacks that made the music industry what it is today.
I’m looking at you, Wenner.
Just a heads up if any of you are in the Austin area on Saturday.
Million Musician March national day of unity in support of Peace in Iraq and throughout the world.
Musicians rock!
I respect Patti Smith’s decision. I think she’s has remained true to her art, and I would never think of her selling out. I don’t recall hearing Dancing Barefoot hawking some cheesy product on TeeVeee.
I didn’t know that they only allowed 2 tickets per inductee, and solicited such ransome for tables. That does take the shine off it.
“my diet pill is wearing off…”
I didn’t know Patti Smith was partnered with a guy from the MC5.
As for Valerie Plame being covert (as confirmed by the head of the CIA):
we all know facts are ‘cold thing’…(Colbert)…isn’t it ‘okay’ to just ‘feel’ she wasn’t covert…and you know…’blow’ her identity with a ‘good’ feeling about it??????
I saw MC5 in concert a lifetime ago. A summer day. Ah, youth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK,so if CSPAN were going to add a soundtrack to the Plame hearing today, what songs should be on it?
New thread.
THANKS for this Donita! Big loooong time Patti Smith fan.
Wow. I remember Patti singing this on Mike Douglas, but never saw this clip. Thanks a million!
I have one real problem with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It’s in Cleveland, but Pere Ubu, Cleveland’s finest and strangest, have yet to get the nod. Sure, they’d probably decline, but that’s beside the point.
Dan “Mom kicked me out till I get some pants that fit” Whitworth
Patti!
Good times. Good times.
I’m rather ambivalent about the Hall o’ Fame. Except, that you sometimes have magic when old bandmates get back together for a few hours. (Cream!) Or not (Blondie!)…
fuck phil specter.
he killed my buddy lana clarkson.
she was an ambitious woman, always working in show biz, even when she didn’t have a job, she was working towards the next one.
she was tireless and bright and cheerful and never had a bad word for anyone.
may phil get convicted and sent to death and fry in hell for the rest of his life.
I’d respect the r r hall of phlegm a lot more if they inducted the likes of Mickey Lee Lane instead.
Great post Donita. Patti Smith rocks. A lot of vibrant menschlichkeit exhibited in induction. I think music can still charm us into being better people.
wow
that clip was surreal, Donita
thanks
