Even though Imus (and particulary his producer, Bernard!) can make me nuts, I really appreciate listening to his interviews. There’s something about his style or the fact that most guests are on the phone that leads to some pretty honest discussion. And even though I have issues with frequent guests like Russert, being able to hear them speak frankly is often insightful.

And FWIW, he had Mary Matalin on the other day and I made myself listen. Because of his strong stance on the Walter Reed debacle and his attentiveness to the Libby trial, he actually did an excellent job challenging her. There she was shilling for Scooter’s legal fund and he kept after her — why wasn’t she raising funds for the injured soldiers who, btw, had been injured by the war that *she* helped Shooter, Scooter & Rumsfeld start?

And he’s continued to ridicule her in the days since!

(Another thing I picked up on in that interview was yet another hint of the chubby DC crowd. She made references to Russert’s kids as if they’re all part of the same happy playgroup. And don’t forget that’s where Andrea Mitchell tipped her hand WRT Libby talking points. When I listen carefully, I often hear interesting truths come out.)

Boy…there was some deep politick right there. Was that a way to say, Hey, whatever I said about Russert, just good fun, it’s all in the family…

Re: Imus — he did immense damage supporting Lieberman in the primary and election. There is simply not enough he can do to remedy that damage, since the lack of a stronger Dem majority cuts into our ability to provide better funding for vets and cut off funding to the war. Lieberman’s continued existence in the Senate, mouthing Republican neo-con talking points, dilutes Brand Dem and gives the Republicans the ability to say, Look, even Democrats supportus.

I won’t turn on Imus and give him one second of my time because of this matter alone, even if my stepson as a Iraq vet might benefit in any way from his push on Walter Reed.
