(This is a highly modified version of this graphic over at venturedeepocean.org.)
Man, it's really starting to feel like the dead weight of the past twelve years — the era of the Republican hegemony, which grew ever-more-oppressive with time — is starting to be shifted from America's chest. A huge tectonic plate of corruption, malfeasance, incompetence and authoritarianism orchestrated by the Republican Party and their friends in the US press has been shifted enough to allow us to breathe — and that in turn makes us more able to finish the job and banish the weight once and for all.
The events of the past few weeks have shown that there is indeed hope for the future — and that we will very likely see great and good things happen sooner than even the most optimistic of us had dreamed possible.
First, we had a number of revelations from concerned members of the Justice Department about how Bush's FBI abused even the huge leeway given it by the "Patriot" Act, and how Republicans like Pete Domenici worked with top Bush Junta officials — including Karl Rove — to purge a number of hardworking US attorneys and replace them with corrupt and ultra-partisan GOP zampolit. The whistleblowers in DoJ knew that so long as Republicans controlled Congress, there was no point in complaining; the complaints would be swept under the rug and the complainers would lose their jobs or worse. But the Republicans don't control Congress any more — so now the DoJ whistleblowers can come in from the cold, secure in the knowledge that hearings will be held (in fact, are being held) and that malefactors will be punished.
Just today, we had a new set of revelations about BushCo malfeasance concerning the Justice Department: Seems that last year, Bush's attorney Harriet "My Little Crony" Miers wanted to get rid of not one, two, or even a dozen, but all 93 of the US Attorneys that were serving at the time. Kinda puts Arlen Specter's December 2005 decision to tinker with the Patriot Act to allow BushCo to appoint new US Attorneys without Senate hearings in an interesting light, doesn't it? (Especially if one looks at the timeline for these decisions.) And it makes one wonder about Jon Kyl (R-Wingnut) and his efforts to keep the Democrats from rolling back that decision.
Then there were the Scooter Libby convictions: They showed, in a way even the GOP/Media Complex could not deny, that not even the Bush Junta was above the law for which they have repeatedly shown such withering contempt.
And there were the things that didn't get much attention, even in the reality-based part of the blogosphere, but which were noteworthy nonetheless, such as what happens when a committed environmentalist, Jerry McNerney, occupies a Congressional seat that until two months ago was held by anti-environment wacko Richard Pombo.
Next, we had the Democratic Congress do a flurry of body blows: Genuine tax-reform legislation (which undoes Bush's partisan assault on Democrats, wherein he used the AMT as a weapon against them). Working to undo Bush's hide-Poppy's-and-my-crimes CYA Act. And last, but most certainly not least, both the House and Senate Democrats striding up to the Republicans and daring them to go on record about their stance on Bush's Iraq war.
Yeah, these last ones are not even likely to make it to Bush's desk — and if they do, he'll veto them anyway. But the Republicans are terrified, absolutely terrified, of having to put themselves on record on Iraq. If they vote with the Democrats for withdrawal, they tick off Karl Rove. But if they vote against withdrawal, they tick off the folks back home — and with a large number of Republican Senators up for re-election next year, sticking by Mister Thirty Percent and his equally-unpopular war isn't exactly a prescription for continued electoral good health.
And the Democrats will keep reviving this, over and over again, as 2008 draws nearer. And sooner or later — perhaps sooner than we realize — a non-trivial number of Republicans will say "screw it — let Karl do his worst" and vote to save themselves.
No, things didn't automatically go from bad to good when the Democrats won Congress last November. But things are already a lot better than they were five months ago — and hold the promise of getting much better yet.
It really could be morning in America.

Sampson’s e-mail to Miers
Froomkin.
While I’d like to share your optimism, I cannot.
More than ever, I feel like I’m stuck in a loop of the last verse of the Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”
EEEEEYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss.
As long as shills like HoJo, Barbara Boxer and Ellen Tauscher are on Capitol Hill, nothing will change. I sure wish I hadn’t been born to white trash poverty, because if I could do something in demand,. like diagnostic imaging, I could emigrate to New Zealand. That might just be far enough away from the US.

great post, great analogy.
What does BushCo have on him?
Gonzo press conference at 1400 hours.
Can somebody find a link?
I am just a little bit worried about some kind of coo these guys might be working on.
they are too relaxed, too non chalant facing all that’s going down
seems to me like Iran is their ticket to perpetual power
be on the lookout
From TPM, ‘What did Karl know, and when did he know it’:
Only Harriet was involved, Karl? Would you care to rephrase that answer, before you get any deeper in it?

once again, with all this going down, think Iran…and now palosi seems to be enabling the administration, I am surely concerned
I’d really like to see some sweat on Gonzo’s pompous little brow.
I sure hope Leahy and others are already preparing articles to impeach Gonzales for lying to Congress if he refuses resign.
Cpan 2 will cover Gonzo press @ 2pm eastern.
Can anyone read the Gregg shorthand notes at the top of page 48 of the following document?

i don’t think we can conclude that pelosi is enabling the administration… but the situation deserves our close attention… so we (the american public) can help her to do the right thing.
Republicans should join Democrats in condeming the Bush Administration. Even they must be able to see that Bush will long be their Party’s albatross. Since they remain silent and compliant, it shows that they are simply owned by the Bush family and put that before the good of both their Party and our Nation.

perris @ 18
I’m not. They don’t have any more authorization to attack Iran than they did before (which is none), much as I would have liked a clear statement on that point, I don’t have any illusions that it would have made much difference to the Unilateral Executive crew.
I’ve lived across the river from DC long enough that I stay well away from perfect-is-the-enemy-of-the-good. While we should always keep pushing for more, PW is right, we’re making a lot of progress.

Elliott, Bushco doesn’t have to have anything on Kyl to keep him in line. This is the true Kyl. He is a true believer.
I’d like to believe that this some kind of beginning of the end for the GOP. The saddest thing is that even with these ridiculous levels of blatant corruption and scandal the Democrats should be just destroying Bush and company, while in reality, they continue to acquiesce and cower before Bush and his cabal.
I think you paint to rosy of a picture of the Dems who have been acting like spineless opportunists. With the exception of someone like Russ Feingold, it’s hard for me to really get excited about this promised “time for change” when nothing substantial is changing. The Iraq war continues full speed ahead. The surge goes through. Iran could be next, and the president couldn’t give a damn if the Democrats in Congress object to this or if they were to actually pass some binding legislation with teeth, which they have not. Libby takes a fall, but Cheney and Rove are safe.
I write this as someone gullible enough to hope that the Dems really meant it when they said electing them was going to really mean something. We need real leaders with courage and the willingness to stand up to tyranny. Are we ever going to get it?

I take Schumer’s “no Scooter Libby” comment to mean that ain’t gonna fly. Mr. Gonzales, would you care to state under oath that you are such an incompetent AG that your didn’t ask your chief of staff if the statements you were about to make were true? Or is it that he lied to you? So would you rather resign for being incompetent, or for gross misconduct?
As has been stated many times… when you look at republican behavior and especially this administration.. you discover illegal, unethical and unbridled selfish behavior. This is a given.
But there has been no ACCOUNTABILITY. Guilty are just shifted to another job with a pay increase usually.
Our press doesn’t care and hasn’t done its job… cos they owe their “access” to these thieves… or are taking orders from the right winger in the front office.
This has been the most corrupt and incompetant administration and congress in history.
If they’re republican… they’re guilty.. it’s that simple.
Ann in AZ @ 37
That’s sad, very sad, you have my sympathies.
Elliott @ 30

There are a couple places in Sampson’s emails where a name has been removed.
one example is on page 6:
“Kyle, any current thinking on holdover U.S. Attorneys? Any recent word on ___________ intentions?”
Any idea who this is?
Oh and the democraps? They are spiness cowards who also suck up to cash.
They are wind sniffers and missed the opportunity to shut the gov down and demand some serious changes… from Bushco.
They have been playing nice… why?
Redshift @ 32
redshift, they don’t have any authority to trash our consitution, any authority to change our law with signing statements, any authority to unilaterlaly discard the geneva treaty, any authority to manufacture “facts” and start war, they have no authority to redifine toruture, they have no authority to ignore habeus corpus, no authority to steal our information without warrants
the list goes on and on what they do without any authority what so ever
having the authority is not the issue, having the audacity is all they need
Two questions:
1. Can Democrats become the “law and order” party from now on? Please? Please? And how about the “national security” party? Ooh, ooh, and the “fiscal responsibility” party?
2. Can we get Carol Lam back? I haven’t heard this discussed, and I’m sure they’ve all started work elsewhere. But it seems to me that even if Gonzo leaves, they have effectively delayed a set of prosecutions and intimidated a set of current Attorneys. Returning the ousted lawyers would to offer them the best kind of vindication, and also serve the public interest.
and when does fitz bring his cheney information demonstrating cheney’s treason to the hill?

we have ALWAYS been the party of law and order, except corporate propaganda makes people believe otherwise
and we have ALWAYS been the party of national security, FIRST with resources to our military, FIRST for veterans benefits and rights
and we have ALWAYS been the party of national security, NEVER refusing to protect our shore
the reverse of all those things is the republican party, however corporate media has a lock on propaganda
Gonzo says he accepts responsibility for what’s gone wrong, that he will work hard to figure out what happened and will get to the bottom of holding people responsible for any wrongdoing. He’s not stepping down.
He is taking questions (can’t hear them, though).
He says that he has overcome many obstacles to become AG, and he won’t step away from his responsibilities to get to the bottom of what has happened. That’s what I figured.
Q what about myers re firing all ag?
A big dpt i cant know everything but 2 years ago request fm WH possibility replace all USA, immed rejected by me, disruptv, wt i know began a process of eval strong performers not as strong weak as faras i knew my cos respon weak where were districts where we cd do better i am ceo am ultimately accountbl
Abu was late and they had to go to the Senate b/c they gaveled in at 215.
He’s taking questions.
In an aroganization of 10,000 people, I’m not aware of everything that’s going on
What I know is that there began a process of evaluating performance
Who are the weak performers?
Ewwwww.
I hate his voice.
Bear in mind that his insistence on “performance” means that these prosecutors were not pursuing politically motivated charges.

Jeeze he just said he works for thye American people….who knew

Q re cos
A sampson resigned yesterday technically still there transition out
wrt first part, i work for am people, easier if i have confidence of members of congress i will try to maintain confidence of congress, and am people, ascertain wt happened here, take corrective actions, incomplete info communic to congress, strong oblig to provide accur and complete info to con
Gonzo’s gotta be kidding! The man has no integrity, but he wants Congress to just trust him.
u can hear the reporters questions to gonzo on cspan’s audio
the chief of staff resigned

I will continue to maintain confidence of the American people
I’m concerned that incomplete info was communicated to Congress

Q how does yr cos know which USA to be let go and you dont
A big dpt 10,000 people i dont know everything in dpt delegated authority
mr sampson charged w directing the process who were weak performers in districts around the country, in transition worked w presidential people at WH and DOJ under ashcroft so naturally when question came up it was him
I hear a lot of stress in Gonzo’s voice.
He claims he was not in the loop about the firigns, other than he was asked his opinion (re: Miers suggestion to can them all) and said it wasn’t a good idea. Otherwise, he doesn’t read all of the memos that go through DOJ, doesn’t get involved in the details. He’s trying to say he just offered one opinion and was outside of all of the details/decisions made by others.
He also says his job is to represent the American people, and serves at the President’s discretion (not exact words… but he basically tries to assert that he represents the American people more than the President. Yawn.)
Talking about “Who were weak performer” It’s him!
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the Peter Principle elevated to the level of opera. That little worm of a man is so clearly in over his head.
Grrrrr.
He is putting ALL the blame on Sampson. His hands are clean. Nothing to see here, folks.
reporter to gonzo – “you sound like Ken Lay”
I accept responsibility
Many decisions are made that I’m not aware of
My Sampson was charged with evaluating performance
Abu Gonzales keeps “taking responsibility” but he’s not resigning. I don’t think he understands what “responsibility” is.
Won’t someone ask him why he hasn’t resigned, if he’s responsible for this mess?
who knew Bush could find an AG so bad he makes Ashcroft look good
Heh.
She just compared him to Ken Lay.
Who was that?
LandOfTheFree @ 69
He sounds just like that Killey guy who got put back in charge of Walter Reed before he got is a** canned.
Did he just say that he’s dismayed that Congress received bad information? He’s dismayed that he lied… Oh my!!!
Q like ken lay distanced from day to day optns
A i take responsty and regret info not shared and conseq info shared w congress tt was incomplete cos was charged w driving the process. info he had wasnt shared within the dpt who were talking w congress,
Q?
A i never saw documents, never knew where things stood, was ongoing effort where improvemt blah
TRex @ 89
yep. but w/o the music. yuck.
(howdy trex – waving madly!!)
Ann in AZ @ 78
that’s what congress has to make sure, anyone who claims the right to redefine torture, anyone that claims the constitution doesn’t give us habaus corpus protection, anyone that claims we can steal information withour warrants has lost any trust congress might have had
TRex @ 89
ain’t it the truth
He’s simply repeating himself
Info that Sampson had was not shared with people in the dept
I never saw documents
We never had discussions
Interesting. You can hear the reporter’s questions on cspan but not on cnn or msnbc.
beth meacham @ 93
EXCELLANT!!
Q Was a mistake made in considering political stuff with regard to US attorneys?
A We dont have information about everything, but they should have been told WHY changes were being made, that didn’t happen and I regret it.
Q Were they removed without cause, unfairly?
A I stand by the decision. again all political appointees can be removed by the President.
Thank you very much.
[End of press conference]
*****************************
“What part of a US Attorney’s failure to be politically effective disqualifies them for service?”
Good question.
Hammer the political angle, folks.
He accepts responsibility, but Sampson was the one responsible for not sharing information with those reporting to Congress or with him. Gee, maybe those that didn’t know, didn’t want to know. Ya think?!!!
Too little too late.
Is anyone — that is, more than that 18% pardon crowd — going to buy any of this? Are these guys desperate or what?!
selise @ 99
Hey, hon!
*smooch*
I’ll try to go back and clean that up a little for you. You’re welcome. I tried to make him say he was resigning but he just wouldn’t!
Someone wasn’t told that changes were being made
I stand by the decision
All political appointees can be removed at any time by the president
Than you very much
and he is claiming the only thing wrong was that the attorneys weren’t informed why
why hasn’t anyone asked if their investigations weren’t taken forward
THIS JUST IN;
HE WALKED OUT ON THEM!!!!
man, they better be LIVID
egregious @ 105
egregious, thank you very much!
He’s basically repeating the “I take responsibility” meme with “I don’t know what’s going on in my department”. He certainly is indirectly blaming his underlings and the assistant who just “resigned”, but trying to “accept responsibility” just like Bush “accepts responsibility” for problems with the Iraq war, not getting Osama bin Laden, not implementing 9/11 recommendations…
This is exactly what I figured he’d do. Try to look like a good guy, try to make it look like it’s really other people’s fault and he is committed to getting to the bottom of what happened.
Dan Abrams MSNBC making some interesting analysis – says Gonzo is trying to focus the investigation on a small portion of what’s going on.
That may qualify as the worst Press Confernce ever assembled by anyone in this administration. Clearly the guy is in way over his head and running scared. His voice was quaking and he could not leave fast enough – he practically sprinted out of the room.
Is Gonzo gone this Friday or next?
That’s that. He said absolutely nothing.
LaFourmiRouge @ 115
Oh, I dunno. These asshats have pitched some pretty shitty ones. Do speeches by Himself count?

I’m reposting this:
There are a couple places in Sampson’s emails where a name has been removed.
one example is on page 6:
“Kyle, any current thinking on holdover U.S. Attorneys? Any recent word on ___________ intentions?”
Any idea who this is?
perris @ 100
You forgot to mention, anyone who specifically lies to congress. It’s long past time they start impeachment proceedings if they haven’t already. They certainly have grounds. Contempt of Congress and Abuse of Power, just to name a few.
Did any reporters ask about Rove? I never heard Gonzo mention him, and I’d be surprised if no reporters brought him up.
Gonzo is definitely trying to avoid the political angle, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t mention him. He did not mention Miers by name (even though there were direct questions about her involvement).
If we understand the “original plan” to dismiss all 93 USAs as meaning that all 93 would be gone, we’re not getting it. I’m sure the plan was always to get rid of the honest USAs and keep the corruptible ones. The first plan would have featured across-the-board “resignations” followed by rehirings of those whom Rove could love. The plan that was executed just skipped the mass resignations and the cover that they would have provided.
In the Cheney/Bush administration, all plans are bad.
Wow. That didn’t go so well.

Boy, am I glad to see this thread on my lunch hour. Just walked into our breakroom where CNN plays, in time to see the last couple minutes of Gonzales talking, then virually RUNNING away from mike. He looked scared!
The crawl on CNN said that Gonzales basically blamed Harriet Miers, and that he didn’t know what was going on. Is that accurate?
And if he didn’t, WHY the he** NOT? U.s. Atty appointments are NOT routine personnel matters; they’re highly important in the administration of justice in the federal system.
Okay, now to read farther up in thread.

Jay Carney thinks you’re an idiot.
http://time-blog.com/swampland…..sacre.html
Why not leave a comment and tell him what you think of him?
Even the fact that Gonzo is a miserable failure at controlling his underlings and keeping track of what’s going on in his own division should be enough to show the entire country he needs to go.
Do we need a serious problem at the Homeland Security Department to prove the same about Michael Chertoff. Or should we wait until that problem “becomes a mushroom cloud.”
Waiting for the TPM response to all of this. In the meantime they’re checking in with Rudy G. for a comment, Romney declined to make a statement, and Edwards jumped in to join the call for Abu’s resignation.
And also check out TPM’s link to Jay Carney at Time.com eating crow, in a surprisingly decent way, that the US atty story has turned into real news.
Don’t forget what Josh Marshall mentioned once again today: it’s all about San Diego. It’s even more satisfying if you say it with the “it’s Chinatown, Jake” pauses.

In the email from Sampson to Harriet Miers with the list of USAs to “consider pushing out” there are similar white spaces. It sure looks like some names have been redacted to me. Who might be some of the folks being nominated for other jobs (section II – looks like space for six names), folks rumored to be leaving (III – 3 names), and (most curious) the folks whose names were in the blanks in the list of USAs that ought to be pushed (V – three more?)?
If I were a USA, I’d be mighty curious, if not downright nervous, if my state/district fell within the blanks on the alphabetically-sorted list of people to purge.
Perris and Lindy please stop quoting each other you’re gonna break the margins.
Of course. The the document dump under way.

Considering I suffer from both short and long-term memory problems, perhaps I should try my hand at blogging for Time.

Just as FDL owned the coverage of the Libby Trial, Josh Marshall and his crew at TPM Muckraker is the place to go for all things related to the USA firings.
he doesn’t read all of the memos that go through DOJ, doesn’t get involved in the details
Um, Abu, that’s your job, reading all of the memos and getting involved with the details. if you don’t understand that you’re a supervisor, you might want to get out. (Leave your papers: we’ll be wanting to check them for fingerprints of Miers and Sampson.)
Redshift / 149:
“We’re not talking about some random guy in the Justice Department, we’re talking about your chief of staff. So if you don’t know about the actions of the person closest to you, is there anyone of those 10,000 people whose actions you do know about? And if not, why the hell are we paying you?”

New story at the NYT about Sampson.
Have to mention that Wonkette is making a nice meal out of Gonzalez today. Pretty funny stuff.

It’s funny. I remember, not too long ago, when people were saying “I’m not familiar with them. I’ll have to wait for confirmation from another source.” when RS was quoted or linked.

I’m sure whoever’s car you are working on is similarly glued to the coverage of Gonzales’ press conference, and will understand. In fact, they are probably surfing the web so hard that they forgot their car is in the shop.

Citizen Phoenix Woman and the Firepup Patriots:
Thanx Phoenix, yer post is right on…the dam has burst and there is nuthin’ the fascists can do to save this administration or their party from drownin’. In my opinion, the hearings on Abugate and the stealth bomb planted in the renewal of the Patriot Act are gunna lead to the resignation of both Abu and Rove (you heard it here first folks). Conyers is gunna get Rove’s grand jury testimony in the course of this or and expanded investigation and that’s gunna lead to Cheney’s resignation and indictment. Absent Rove, Cheney and Abu, the Chimpenfeurer will resign leaving the whole country in the biggest mess since the attack on Fort Sumter.
You are absolutely right, Phoenix, the unraveling is gunna pick up speed and is inexorable.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION…AND TAKE NO SHIT FROM ANYONE!!!
On a more serious note, I believe that part of Gonzalez’ “defense” was something to the effect of “what we’ve discovered is that there isn’t enough communications with the US attorneys in the field.”
Oh, okay, that was it.
You mean that they weren’t doing exactly what the White House wanted them to do?
Don’t see how that explanation is going to fly.
perris @ 179
Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like that before!
Well, it was an honorable thing to do and I appreciate any msm validation of the accuracy and integrity of bloggers like Marshall (and, of course, the fine bloggers of FDL). We don’t get much of that but I detect a gradual change in attitude.
Perhaps this will encourage journalists to begin actually checking their facts pre-spew as opposed to post-spew. Especially when they know Congressional subpoenas have been issued! Sheesh.

Schumer’s already said that Sampson’s not going to be the new Scooter, the new “fall guy”. He’s still calling on Gonzo to resign.
From the NYTimes:
Yeah, right.

love this ( /s ): “to be pushed out: ….chafed against admin initiatives”
to keep:….exhibited loyalty to Pres and Ag.”
UnBELIEVable. I can’t believe this is my country, home of the rule of law.
And, I can’t believe Gonzoles actually said, “who could have known…” Isn’t that a phrase to be strictly avoided by this admin?
And — you who saw the whole presser — did a reporter really tell Gonzales he “sounded like Ken Lay?” (maybe rporters are growing spines?)

Page 25 is that first word ‘created’?
I don’t think Gonzales should be able to resign, I think he should be thrown out.
When “he of humble beginnings” started his spiel, I turned the TV off. I actually had a teeny hope he’d be man enough to resign, but oh, no. He worked so hard to get where he is, we owe it to him to let him run wild over the law in concert with his failed leader. Jeeeezzzz.

But the sun could go right back down again, yanked in reverse into a hellish night, if Democrat enablers like Obama and Edwards and Neo-con Hillary Clinton continue to propound that “all options are on the table” with regard to aggressive war against Iran.
If the Nuremburg Standards and the U.N. Charter are still binding, then some options are definitely not on the table.
The Bush Junta acts like they are not binding, and have driven this country into the status of international pariah.
Dems who use the same framing are helping to enable further atrocities.
Remember when blogs like this mobilized massive netroots campaigns in regards to things like the Alito nomination?
It is great that the washington Dems are re-arranging some deck chairs for the better, but if Cheney stages some provocation as a causus belli for attack against Iran, it could be a whole ‘nother ball game.
I bookmarked Swampland about 3 weeks ago. I think that Klein, Cox, Tumulty, and Carney have really had their eyes opened over there.
If we could exponentially get this phenomenon plugged into the rest of the MSM, we’d be smokin’ !
Urban Pirate @ 127
Shiny objects
I really have to wonder about this whole Muckracker/document dump thing, especially in light of the Carney apology.
And the question is this: if it weren’t for people like Josh Marshall, would any of these msm reporters even bother to look at this stuff? Would they still be spinning the WH versions of everything? I mean, this is pretty much where we were less than half a year ago.
And now a Time magazine reporter has to issue a mea culpa for not doing what all decent reporters should have done: withhold judgment until they looked at the evidence, knowing that subpoenas had been issued and documentation was coming down the pike.
Same thing with FDL’s coverage of the Libby trial.
Oh, never mind. Optimism extinguished. I just realized the msm hasn’t had a chance to kick into full WH spin mode yet like they did with the Libby verdict. Silly me.

He also said that b/c of the lack of communication, the USA’s were not informed of the reasons why they were being pushed out. No-brainer, there.
Of course, a menacing phone call from Domenici or Heather Wilson might qualify as a communication of sorts.

As Josh Marshall says, how bad do things have to be for them to do a “Friday document dump” on a MONDAY?
Either they really effed up and this caught them totally by surprise, or there’s something much worse for them coming down the pike.
Phoenix Woman @ 227
It sure does. But, it isn’t gneiss.
There is going to be a new office in the White House called WHOOPS. That is the White House Office Of Political Scandals. It will be put in either a broom closet, so scandals can trashed or swept under the rug, or in a bathroom so they can be flushed down the terlet.
The “Shift?” This is merely wishful thinking. The MSM will never allow a dramatic shift that could threaten their paymasters. We’re talking about a system that needs more than just tweaking at the edges to make things right again. This is a system whose social, political and economic institutions are so corrupt, dysfunctional and undemocratic that it will take more than the resignation/impeachment of an AG, Turdblossom, Darth Cheney or even GW himself to right the wrongs. Before there is even the slightest hint of a dramatic shift in the political ethos the MSM on behalf of the ruling elites (Republican and Democrats) will fan the flames of ubber nationalism and racism, provide bread and circus, and remind Americans of their mythic exceptionalism to squash any threat to their priviledged positions.
Love the graphic!
Is the graphic a geological metaphor, or does it illustrate the ‘acne’ of Republican power exploding into the public view? Which is zit?
I think boil on the hind end of America would be a more appropriate description.
But as I said to my brother shortly after the election, this is nothing short of a revolution.
