for the week ending 3/10/07:
Jenna Bush, in a rare interview, says her forthcoming book for teens — about a 17-year-old single mother in Panama who is living with HIV — will end with a "call to action."
HarperCollins announces today that it's publishing Bush's Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope this fall.
…
The president's daughter, 25, says the book is not political. It's aimed at "getting kids thinking and involved," Bush said Monday by phone from Panama, where she has worked since September as an unpaid intern for UNICEF.
With the publication of "Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope," HarperCollins, a subsidiary of News Corporation, is proud to welcome its new imprint, New Reality Books, to the HC family of quality literature and nonfiction. Karen Hughes, renowned author, former Under Secretary of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs with the Bush administration and now President of New Reality Books, is thrilled to bring a fresh perspective to the world of nonfiction. "Just because it's based in fact doesn't mean it has to be 100% accurate," says Mrs. Hughes. "Because really, life is just a series of personal perceptions."
Under Mrs. Hughes' direction, New Reality Books has already garnered an incredibly exciting catalogue of titles:
Flipping My WHIG, by Karl Rove. A poignant and revealing memoir by the patriot who put God and country first and who served as the key to unlocking the greatness of George W. Bush.
Everyone Looks Good in Ochre, by Laura Bush. The First Lady of the United States isn't just another pretty face! Mrs. Bush is a fashion expert, and shares her tips on how to dress to impress everyone from foreign dignitaries to your husband's mother.
Two Birds, One Stone, by Richard B. Cheney. The Former Vice President and current chair of the department of international affairs at Liberty University provides a step-by-step guide on how to further the country's interests abroad while protecting our interests at home, and still maintain a healthy regard for the principles upon which this country was founded.
I Still Believe in Me, by Judith F. Miller. Ms. Miller brings her formidable reporting expertise, broad-based world views, and longstanding history of volunteerism to a journalism ethics class for female inmates wrongfully imprisoned in the federal penitentiary at Danbury, CT.
Other titles include:
Misunderstood, by Ahmad Chalabi
Muffin Top – My Life as a Fraternal Twin, by Barbara Bush
Fits in Print: Managing a Successful Newspaper, by Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger
Hey Man, Nice Shot – Tips for the Hunting Enthusiast, by Richard Whittington
Digging in the White House Dirt, by Barney the First Dog
—
Feh. Like anything of import happened this week.
The Rude Pundit proffers a bit of advice to the White House regarding a Libby pardon. Roger Ailes (you know which one) finds it a bit difficult to muster the tears for pauvre Scooter Libby. The Kenosha Kid wasted a perfectly good quarter.
Happy Furry Puppy Story Time's Norbizness provides us with the Washington Post Libby verdict editorial that got pulled at the eleventh hour. Carl at Little Green Fascists reacts to the Libby verdict. Pretty much emblematic of the general right wing reaction.
Doghouse Riley at Bats Left Throws Right fisks the "Newt Gingrich, Adulterer Extraordinaire" story.
TBogg introduces us to Mitt Romney's latest addition to his Internet collection. Rising Hegemon's Podiatrist to the stars, Dr. Atta J. Turk, has a photomographical homage to Rudy Ghouliani.
Oh, Mr. Wolcott, how I adore thee. Especially when you set fire to Pammycakes' blatherings. The Editors at The Poor Man Institute turns the fire into a conflagration.
Over at Hoffmania, Ann Coulter gets hers. World O' Crap's maryc is keeping a running tally on the droves of advertisers fleeing the carnage that is Coultergeist's site.
dedalus at Blah3 heaves a heavy sigh and notes that once again, Michelle Malkin is utterly, completely, 100% wrong.
Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog puts in an advance order for Mayan priests for President Bush's return from Latin America.
Bring It On!'s Ken Granlund alerts us to yet another Bush "D-oh!" moment had at the expense of the neglected soldiers at Walter Reed.
Blogenfreude at Agitprop is absolutely addicted to Conservapedia. And really, can you blame him? Pictures of Jesus riding a dinosaur sidesaddle…
This week's winner of "dirty fuckin' mouth" contest is Bitch, Ph.D.! Please come pick up your goddamned, piece-of-shit trophy.
Uh. Mah. Gah. According to Thers at Whiskey Fire, I'm supposed to feel sorry for Dick Cheney?
Hey, nobody told me! General J.C. Christian has accepted the position of Internet Director for Michael Savage's presidential campaign. Congratulations, General, you magnificent, heterosexual bastard!
Let the games begin! Brad Altrocket at Sadly, No! has opened up voting for Glenn Reynolds Roboshop Challenge. I recommend donning your astronaut diapers before reading.

Who loves ya, TSF?
Yup, she’s a bush alright, ignoring those pesty little facts. I for one wouldn’t spend a cent on a book written by any bush.
ooh, these people are a cancer on my country. excise, radiate, and chemo them into oblivion.
I heard that the little Bush-let said her book is like, soooo like the Diary of Anne Frank. Sickening enough for ya…..?
Karen stole that line about personal perceptions from Plato, I’m sure.
Other titles that were considered for the book, though, were A Tale of Two Whiskies, The Six-Pack You Meet on the Way to Heaven, In Cold Bud, Of Mice and Michelob, and Are You There Scotch? It’s Me, Jenna.
Huck Finnlandia?
Muffintop….
For some reason that just kills me!
Daddy must be cutting Little Miss Thing One off if she has to raise cash through the right-wing welfare program, a la crappy book of hypocrisy ghost-written and bought in grape-bulk by Bush supporters, soon to appear on Dollar Store bookshelves.
It’s out of print and hard to find, but well worth the effort to read O Lawd! Massuh done been good to me! by the late Strom Thurmond.
His mastery of the Uncle Remus dialect is thrilling.
Jenna. I will be polite. Just like always. ;0)
At Kos the headline is that Halliburton is moving its corporate headquarters to Dubai.
Damn, these bastards are going to put the ‘Onion’ out of business. There is simply no place left for satire.
Say, this sounds like an imprint that would be interested in two titles that are vital to the decaying fabric of society: Deliver It In 30 MInutes, by Sean Hannity, and Never A Gain, by the old eagle soarer himself.
‘Help us save America from the menace of rational thought’, won’t you?
;>)
In all fairness, I think that this does qualify as news. I had no idea that Jenna Bush could even READ a book, much less WRITE one. She is, after all, her father’s daughter.
Snake the Farce!
Snarf the Cake!

My hubbie has a lovely ball cap with a picture of little Jenna falling down drunk that was published a few years ago. It says “WWJD-What Would Jenna Drink?” Another little Bushie living in her own fantasy world.
Missed the thread about Netflix suggestions. Here are mine:
Triplets of Belleville
Antonia’s Line
Rabbit-proof Fence
Life of David Gale
Africans In America
Monsiuer Ledoux (an old Chaplin film)

I was being polite. But I was itching with sentiments. ;0)
Shoulda called it Girls Gone Wild (for Dummies).
Someone should read it for plagiarism, though.

Please forgive an ignorant old hillbilly for messin’ round mungst all the literati here, but AP has a story out about Haliburton MOVING CORPORATE HQ TO DAIBAI…go check it out and see what all you brainy types can make of this FASCIST $h#t!

Bingo……
GSD @ 23:
Hubby and I both say OMG! We had no idea. VERY creepy!
“The photographer who took that picture died in the anthrax attacks that struck in th run-up to the war.”
watertiger,
You missed an even better title for pinchie’s tome. How about “You know what? i I don’t care…” from his statement a few weeks ago to Ha’aretz:
Given the constant erosion of the printed press, do you see the New York Times still being printed in five years?
“I really don’t know whether we’ll be printing the Times in five years, and you know what? I don’t care either,” he says.
Ed*ard Teller @ 28
Pinch is going for the coveted title of “Douchebag of Free Speech”.
I wonder if the “call of action” amounts to her writing “It is unacceptable to not do anything.”
Anyone with enough money and connections, even blokes like me, can publish. If Jenna wants to be an author, just buy her a publishing house, prez.
Keith @ 30
It had better not be a call for abstinence. I will go absolutely postal if it is.

Also, Judith Miller was the only person to get a phony letter with fake anthrax in it.
I was going to note that Fox News didn’t get any letters, but neither did CNN.

Here’s the important question: who’s her ghostwriter?
That will determine the quality of the book.
Gary
Jenna might want to consider a ‘tell-all’. About how she finally grew up. Well… it might be good satire.
Rayne @

Then Jenna on talk shows, then Jenna with her own show, then the senate run, then…
Life is ‘really’ just a series of perceptions…and if you are a teenage mother living with aids or HIV positive and you ‘percieve’ that you need government assistance, well, um, your ‘perception’ might be ’subjective’…and instead you should generate HOPE within yourself…….
meanwhile one of our major literary talents was spotted on her knees at a disco feeling a series of perceptions…

didn’t Not Jenna do that for about a week and a half?
Halliburton in Dubai means that the tons of currency off-loaded on pallets in Baghdad has found a new home.
Halliburton should be immediately investigated and barred from doing business with American corporations. And Cheney should go straight to jail.
But he’ll just spend his last days shooting his gun and pounding the booze.

would this experience not be the *basis* for the book?
this deep, human, experience…?
Jenna: No child left behind.
Apparently so. According to her father,
THE PRESIDENT: Well, she is — first of all, I’m very proud of her. She is an accomplished woman. She came back — I haven’t seen a lot of her because she’s been spending a lot of time in Central America as a UNICEF volunteer — but she came back and talked to me about this young girl that she has befriended. And she’s deeply concerned about alienationists in our world, and is going to try to raise some money to help the education programs there.
Now if somebody can define “alienationist” for me, I’d be eternally grateful.

Two books i just read, not to be missed imho :
Chalmers Johnson’s last in his blowback triology- Nemesis. (subtitle the last days of the american republic) The military Industrial Complex will be (is) our ruin. Each sentence in the book is a must read. Each chapter a real eye opener. This man has done the country such a service with his research and his books.
Also the newly released Global surveillence “tell all” by Maureen Webb (a canadian writer) called : Illusions of Security, subtitle global surveillanace and democracy in the post 911 world. Published by City Lights.
She covers the entire international goings on extroidinary renditions, RFID chips in passports, drivers licenses, the real ID Act and much more. It is bone chilling. Her research into the dozens of programs makes one realize we are in a police state right now.
The Personal stories of those who survived rendition, is the stuff of nightmeres.
Bottom line for me : short of Impeachment. The complete debunking of the “Unitary Excutive theory” a drastic overhual of the Patriot Act, and the corporate ownership of our politians,we have already crossed the Rubicon. We have a dictator. A mentally compromised one at that.
It would be great to have either or both of these writers for the book salon. Both books dovetail with eachother quite well.
I just did a little check and posted about Ms. Hughes. She’s still doing her thing.
Nice work if you can get it.

Being reminded again about the anthrax used on Americans in the run-up to Iraq, and the questions remaining about it also remind me of a ‘Fitz channeler’ (as zennurse used to endearingly refer to him) that posted here at FDL prior to the Libby indictment. If memory serves, he posted under the handle ‘Me’ and later something else, Me3? He once posted his account some federal folks ransacking his apartment while he was there and hauling him off because they found some rumpled and outdated prescription for his nephew for an ADD medication. He had pretty sophisticated knowledge of the biochemistry of bacteria and spores but was doing other physics related stuff. It made me wonder if he was perceived as a threat not because of any intent to use it, but because his expert knowledge and outspoken nature threatened to expose who did. He always linked to fusioner when he visited. Whither Me now?
Perhaps Jenna’s literary talents are being wasted. Maybe she might want to think about doing a bio of Paris Hilton.

prolly arranged by “Got Milk?” Bolton ……..
I’ve been following the parallel Latin American trips of Bush and Chavez, without resorting to watching TV. A few things have struck me.
The first one is the lack of in-depth reporting back to main US MSM organs about the trip. ABC, MSNBC, CBS all seem stuck inside Bush’s security bubble. Each of them mentions every day that Bush has not addressed the issue of Chavez’s obvious plan to distract W, and to try to create a different narrative of the trip from the spin the WH wants to mold. But none have cited examples of questions or answers on this in Bush appearances in Brazil, Uruguay or Colombia.
The second is that, at least in the eyes of Latino Americanos, Chavez’s gambit is paying off. Particularly his Bolivia trip, where he ponied up some really big bucks – over a billion $US for infrastructure development supporting Morales’s goal of creating economic opportunities for the poor. Compared to Bush’s only $ commitment of the trip, made today at a secure rightwing compound 90 miles outside of Bogota, guarded by 30,000 police and soldiers (!!). Bush promises more guns and RPGs and landmines, agent orange sprayed on campesinos, torture training and, whew! Chavez promises hydro power, agicultural infrastructure, paving plants, medical help, etc.
Third observation is that the South American English language press is not only largely pro-Bush and openly fascist, but way behind the curve. They’re mostly weeklys, so are going to be writing about the parallel trips when it is all over. The Spanish language left and centrist press is on top of the story, shaping the narrative.

btw, he raised 800k and launched his reelection campaign this weekend in Little Rock. So far he has no opposition.
my next read is a Kevin Phillips book, American Dynasty , Aristocracy, fortune and the Politics of Deciet in the House of Bush. His American Theocracy was a weedy but very worthwhile read.
The best part about all of these books for me, is the way they name names and bring up the recent past ie at least the last 60 yrs right up to present time. Chapter two in the Chalmers Johnson book was the stuff i never learned in school, a concise comparision to the Roman and British Empires and their dynamics and the effects on those whom they oppressed. He deftly weaves in the memes in america ie we are a benevelent imperialist nation..he exposes that as the total lie that it is. What a book ! Nemesis ! ok i will stop going on and on about it.
i am going to be 50 this month and need to make up for a profound lack of historical context for where we are now. These books have helped greatly.

And I thought, wow, she’s right, I mean, there’s so many books, it just can’t be all that hard to write a book when there’s so many of them. And this whole UNICEF thing has just been *so* inspiring to me, I mean some people in this world just have to get by with so little, I just really did not know that, and now I just think everybody else should know that. I mean, it’s just, like, so *amazing.* So I just, y’know, like, wrote a little book about it. So people would, like, *know*.
What do you *mean*, did I get help writing? No way! I wrote lots’n’lots of papers at UT, ‘n’ I got A’s on, like, all of ‘em. It was *easy* to write, ’cause, like, the 17-year-old mom with AIDS was just so *inspiring.* Okay, my mom read my pages, y’know, and she might’ve fixed up a couple of things, that’s just because she’s a librarian ‘n’a big reader, ‘n’ all.
I just don’t know why y’all are makin’ such a big fuss about this, y’know?

Jenna Bush has been quoted as humbly saying that she hoped her little book would have an impact similar to Anne Frank’s Diary.
I suspect that for that to happen, she and her family and the Cheneys would have to hide in an attic in Baghdad for two years, have her father’s repeated attempts to obtain refugee status in the US turned down, and she, everyone she knew, and six million more who shared her race and religion, would have to disappear via state-sponsored program.
Since that seems neither likely nor necessary, I suggest that Ms. Jenna ask her librarian mom for a more apt comparison for the impact of her book.
