AP/Charles Dharapak
for the week ending 3/3/07:
Is it me or does this president spend an excessive amount of his time being photographed standing amid the rubble of American cities, pretending to care? Donning yet another Presidential Seal-embroidered, limited edition Members Only™ windbreaker (to be displayed in the "National Disasters" section of his presidential lieberry, no doubt), Bush spent yesterday getting off on tornado porn in the South, just two days after he returned to the scene of one of his bigger crimes, New Orleans.
With menthol-rubbed crocodile tears seeping from his shifty, close-set eyes as he hugged strategically placed teenagers and yes, even a black woman (whom he deemed "fine"), the Dauphin of Crawford spit out little pablum profiteroles like "from this rubble will emerge a better tomorrow" and "the minute you find out you don't have what you need, if you put out a call to the country, this country will respond." Sing it, Louise! I'm sure the folks in the Ninth Ward who are still living in FEMA trailers with no construction crews in sight because nobody's bothered to heed their distress signals are clamoring to provide the chorus for your gospel! Oh, wait, that's right. They not allowed a voice; they're primarily Democrats.
Lord knows, if it's one thing this administration excels at, it's talking out of both sides of its mouth (and oftentimes straight from its anus, personified by George W. Bush). They steadfastly refuse to acknowledge the causal relationship between their F5 tornado of incompetence and the destruction of the countries they currently occupy. To wit: accompanied by the exquisitely timed timpani strike of a suicide bomber detonating himself at the entrance of Bagram AFB, Vice President Snarly von Pork Chop, on his "There Aren't As Many Middle Eastern Countries as There Are Days Before The Libby Jury Comes Back With a Verdict" tour of the Iraq and Afghanistan, warned that if we pull out of Iraq, then Afghanistan will succumb to the evildoers. Heh-heh-hello, Dick? You know that "boom" you heard? That's the Taliban flexing its regrown muscle because you terminally stupid managers redirected money and forces from the "good war" to your personal sandbox in Iraq.
And yet, even when these guys drop their metaphoric trousers and let their shriveled junk hang out in plain sight, everyone looks away, because to draw attention to the fact would just be . . . uncivil. And THAT's the real disaster, worthy of a Presidential windbreaker.

I heart me some watertiger snark!
It’s GRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr-EAT!!!
WASHINGTON, March 3 — Three of the leading Republican presidential candidates on Saturday denounced one of their party’s best-known conservative commentators for using an antigay epithet when discussing a Democratic presidential contender at a gathering of conservatives here.
The remarks by Ann Coulter, an author who regularly speaks at conservative events, were sharply denounced by the candidates, Senator John McCain of Arizona, Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts.
So sorry guys. You’re too late. As usual. A bit of ‘fingers in the wind’? And why do I doubt your political sincerity?
Maybe I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue, but tell me: Why, WHY don’t the elected officials of the Gulf Coast band together and tell the Boy King to stay OUT? Truly. He didn’t send help, he sure as hell has spent very little money. They don’t NEED HIM. He needs his “photo ops” to stay above negative numbers, so they’re in the position of power, AFAIC. Tell him to stay the hell out. He disrupts the recovery efforts, and he can go clear some brush or something at his “ranch”.
I’m sickened to see any photos of him at all, but even more appalled to see him in a city AGAIN that he is responsible for destroying. Yes, I said “he”. Anyone who doesn’t have the critical thinking skills necessary to turn on the freaking Weather Channel the few days before Katrina, upon which they were using the word “Biblical” to describe the effects of the storm — and at least TRY to evacuate those who could not get out of the city — is RESPONSIBLE.
I keep thinking that I’ve seen it all. I keep thinking I’ll get hardened, it won’t matter anymore, I can ignore it. I see George W. Bush’s smarmy little mug posing for yet another staged “Katrina survivor photo op,” and I throw up a little in my mouth one more time.
Thank you, watertiger, for updating all of us.

Mitt Romney didn’t seem to upset to have his picture taken with Coulter.
Amazing wonderful news from Tommy Yum
My party, the Democrats. Gutless wonders?
“The Bush administration’s assault on some of the founding principles of American democracy marches onward despite the Democratic victory in the 2006 elections. The new Democratic majorities in Congress can block the sort of noxious measures that the Republican majority rubber-stamped. But preventing new assaults on civil liberties is not nearly enough.”

After that, and his pronouncement, Romney expects us to like him? It’s all so counterfeit.
Jesus, did I write “to upset”?
That’s what I get for trying to eat lunch at the same time.
Gore/Clark. Gore/Kucinich. Or Kucinich/Feingold. Or the other way around.
Who’s “upset”? Nobody has mentioned Hillary yet. ;0)
Oh my Gawd! Best watertiger ever! Tornado porn! 707!
Speaking of disaster porn. I recently heard in passing from a friend (so no linky) that all of the FEMA mobile homes that have been sitting in a field near Hope, Arkansas, are now up for sale. So, are the taxpayers supposed to think all the non-refugees are taken care of and nobody in MS or LA needs a home? Didn’t FEMA pay up to 70k each for those sardine cans? I would wager right now that they are selling for 10k or less.
does best watertiger ever, land one in moderation? ;}
My prediction:
Monday after lunch we will get the results of the Libby trial. This represents
The American peoples’ first legal peek inside the Bush Government.
Win or lose, ( I think he’ll get off ) I believe this trial marks the beginning of numerous future investigations, Grand Jury’s and assorted trials.
I have a message to my GOP friends, If you think it was your right to impeach Clinton and destroy the Government over a fling with a chick.. Then you have no idea what you are about to face over Iraq the next 8 years. Everything I read in the right wing rags there are few people talking about the impeachment scenario. You better start visiting the topic face and with concern.
I was 21 years old during Watergate and personally I think Watergate was playschool compared to Iraq.
Whatever happens to Libby, history will show he came off the least punished from the Bush White House.
On a lighter note, The Napa Valley Guy is going to uncork a 73 BV Cab and toast to Christy and her great reporting.
While Libby ponders his fate I will ponder my lunch…Good day pups.
We have so much talent in the Democratic party. Aside from the two so called Demo front runners that the MSM and the Republicans are promoting.

Fine lineup you have there, senior OK kiddo.
I caught some of the voting rights celebration on cspan this morning, featuring reverends Obama and Clinton. Amazing how the candidates just waltz right into a church and campaign from a pulpit. If our situation wasn’t so FUBAR it would be nice to revel in these historic times with an articulate pair like Obama and Hillary in such positions. I couldn’t help but think they are both enjoying themselves.
But where was Kucinich? Why aren’t all candidates invited?
Oklahoma kiddo @

Nice you gave Feingold mention even if it was last place. :-) Were liberals to elect the president, a ballot would be a frivolity. Feingold would be the winner with any imaginable opponent in my opinion.
For me a dream team would be Feingold/Webb. A nightmare would be McCain/Feingold.
The latter has been mentioned casually and actually makes some sense. Despite McCain’s suicidal impulse that drove him to kiss up to the Religious Right at the precise time approval by such folk is the kiss of death, the rightwing fringe would never buy McCain.
Wingers and liberals have one thing in common: a visceral hatred for McCain. McCain has obviously derailed himself by speaking falsehoods. Kind of a pity. The goose-steppers need some semblance of a maverick. Used to have lots of them. They even nominated one once long ago before they became a criminal enterprise – Wendell Wilkie.
Just ruminating.
Best, Terry
A very gentle suggestion. How about a poll here on who we support for the Demo nominee for prez in 2008. Just the numbers.

Does Dick Cheney have no faith in his own Secret Service and the US Military? He could be a mile away from the suicide bomber blast and consider it an attempt on HIS life?
It’s like the character Yosarian in Heller’s Catch-22.

Just seeing his photo nauseates me.
Some of my Cali and NY Dem friends are telling me they are considering getting angry at the Democratic Party. And that they are not seeing a lot of light shining between the two parties on a couple of essential issues. That what they are getting is not what they voted for last November. I am tempted to say to them that they are thinking and perhaps behaving like radicals. ;0)
I heard a quote today (I think it was on CBS radio) that made me laugh so hard. They were interviewing a man who was trying to compliment the President for coming to visit them in their tornado-ravaged town (it may have been in Americus, GA). I swear to God, he said this:
“it really means a lot, I mean, for a (stammer) a dictator to come here. It really boosts our morale.”
By the sound of his voice, he was being genuine that he appreciated Bush’s visit – my guess is that he didn’t really mean to call the Prez a dictator, but it sure gave me a chuckle.
It Doesn’t Matter If Hillary Apologizes for Her Iraq War Vote
By Scott Ritter, AlterNet
It turned out Saddam was in fact already disarmed. And it turned out that Hillary’s husband, President Bill Clinton, knew this when he ordered the bombing of Iraq in 1998. Hillary can try to twist and turn the facts as she defends the words she spoke when casting her fateful vote in favor of a war with Iraq. But no amount of re-writing history can shield her from the failed policies of her very own husband, policies she embraced willingly and whole heartedly when endorsing war.
Run, Hillary, run. But your race towards the White House will never outpace the hypocrisy and duplicity inherent in your decision to vote for war in Iraq.

I want to kick some political butt. No. Not Republican political butt. Democratic (my party) political butt.
The Washington Post article on the FDA approving more antibiotics for cows really hit home. My adult son is close to falling into the trap of the drug of last resort either because of ineffectiveness or allergic reactions. After the unsolved anthrax episode he was prescribed Cipro for a minor infection because nothing else would work and my telephone rang from his credit card company about the charge before he left the pharmacy. He only buys antibiotic free meats and no fast food but just think about ordering a pizza with meat on it. Bush’s crimes are only just starting.

Rene, One time when my son was sick they were close to one of the drugs of last resort, but instead restricted his diet either to prescription baby food or chicken, rice and vegies that were not colorful. Since he was in high schoool he chose option two, but it did help.

I know this sounds insane, and I know some of you are probably wondering what I am smoking… But wouldn’t it be hilarious to see Jebediah get voted in, so we can see “Just How Low The Dynasty Will Go”?
Our problems are with the 2 houses of Congress. The President can be made a moot point if the legislature does its intended job…
Besides… Rudy G. will be the next oaf in the Oval Orafice, so why don’t we just concentrate on those politicos that for some reason we elected to Capitol Hill?
Watching the late night Cheney news while on his hiding trip last week was really a living twilight zone experience. I wish a journalist who was in tow could really give us the story. I have to say that last AP article (the Cheney not Cheney trying to put some spin control on his own spin) was quite telling in it’s confusion. The man must be on drugs and or alchohol, and may be having little strokes every day.. and that is not an excuse.

While I may be quite annoyed with some in my party, I’d rather focus on kicking lazy Republican butt. I let the Dems I’m disappointed with know how I’d like them to act… but I’d rather not eat our own. There’s only so much the Democrats can do when they have such narrow majorities in Congress, and getting them to fracture APART is less likely to net the results our country needs.
BTW, does anybody know where Howard Dean has been? I would have expected him to be all over the misappropriation/lack of oversight of our money sent to Iraq, the Walter Reed scandal, the Republicans blocking the vote to stop the surge… is his strategy to sit back and not seem like an “angry, mean Democrat”, thinking that soon we’ll see action in the right direction, and he can then show how the Democrats are the leaders & the party of progress, in contrast to the lazy, stonewalling Republicans?

It is not likely to matter. For once even Bush can’t be blamed. Politicians fear the FDA like they once did J. Edgar Hoover (”I will try to bring it down to your level, Senator).
The FDA activists were successful because they threatened to soil the clothes of the deities at the FDA with all manner of flying objects and picket their homes. Deities would look kind of funny splattered with rotten tomatoes. You are not supposed to laugh at gods.
It’s kinda funny that the FDA says it must obey the law when there is no such law. There are rules laid down by the FDA itself that it abrogates at will.
Kindly note I haven’t said a word about what I think the FDA should do or should not do. All I have is a lurid newspaper report that may or may not be on the mark. I frankly have no idea.
MDR (multi-drug resistance) will happen no matter what the FDA does.
Some folks are trying to bring back iodine because it never suffered MDR over centuries and is generally non-toxic to huamns. Obviously the problem lies with the antibiotics themselves.

inspiring to me… and, many may think strangely, the only really pragmatic “solution” i’ve heard of.

Rightwing Democrats are the worse threat.

i think you can blame bush (among others) because he’s got control over who heads up the FDA. there is a lot of political pressure from pharma.
drug resistance can happen slow or it can go fast. it’s a matter of natural selection… we don’t have to help it go fast by creating a selecting environment in the cattle industry.
selise @ 93
Abuse rather than use is the primary culprit in MDR but it is not all that simple.
In The Congo an energetic entrepreneur was said to be selling quinine made from the bark of the originating tree in place of the synthetics that have become essentially worthless. The claim, of course, is that quinine has retained its efficacy over the centuries.
I have no knowledge beyond some news reports but it is not impossible that such could be true.
I am not advocating anything and certainly not promoting quinine as it was but suggest to you the question is one of science rather than popular opinion.
Best, Terry
terry hallinan @ 94
quinine is not an antibiotic – different story.
absolutely – that is my point… natural selection – the basis, imo, of modern biology.
Citicoline is a drug that saves some grey matter during strokes. (Maybe it even saves nicer white matter for the ladies.) Citicoline is approved around the world but not in the U.S. and probably never will be.
The brain-damaged folk at the FDA could see no good in saving brain cells. There is no question as to the fact. Where would we get politicians and FDA commissioners if there were no brain damage. :-)
Reporters and the brain-damaged deities at the FDA are usually on the same side in refusing to allow marketing of drugs. The cost in lives and health, not to mention healthcare costs, can be enormous.
The FDA does not fear Big Pharma. Big Pharma fears the FDA. During its star chamber proceedings, a fellow who regularly attends FDA hearings as part of his livelihood told me the fine folk at the FDA like nothing better than taking apart the CEO of one of the behemoths. Got to demonstrate your power in order to be respected.
Little doubt the FDA is shot through with all manner of corrupt dealings but incompetence is the worse problem IMO.
Thalidomide is usually cited as shining proof of the need for vigilance against bad drugs. For once politics, rather than science, scored bigtime. The decision was political rather than scientific.
BTW thalidomide is now an approved drug and a very useful one. It probably could even be made safe, if anyone cared to do so, by removing the contaminating anantiomers – the right=handed molecules.
Best, Terry

Gen. Wesley Clark Weighs Presidential Bid: “I think about it everyday.”
Interview with Amy Goodman, in which he says that after 9/11 there was a plan to go to war with Iraq. Then after bombing had started in Afghanistan, he saw a memo that described how the US was planning to take out seven countries in five years: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and finishing off with Iran. ……..
” AMY GOODMAN: Now, let’s talk about Iran. You have a whole website devoted to stopping war.
GEN. WESLEY CLARK: http://Www.stopiranwar.com.
AMY GOODMAN: Do you see a replay in what happened in the lead-up to the war with Iraq — the allegations of the weapons of mass destruction, the media leaping onto the bandwagon?
GEN. WESLEY CLARK: Well, in a way. But, you know, history doesn’t repeat itself exactly twice. What I did warn about when I testified in front of Congress in 2002, I said if you want to worry about a state, it shouldn’t be Iraq, it should be Iran. But this government, our administration, wanted to worry about Iraq, not Iran.
I knew why, because I had been through the Pentagon right after 9/11. About ten days after 9/11, I went through the Pentagon and I saw Secretary Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary Wolfowitz. I went downstairs just to say hello to some of the people on the Joint Staff who used to work for me, and one of the generals called me in. He said, “Sir, you’ve got to come in and talk to me a second.” I said, “Well, you’re too busy.” He said, “No, no.” He says, “We’ve made the decision we’re going to war with Iraq.” This was on or about the 20th of September. I said, “We’re going to war with Iraq? Why?” He said, “I don’t know.” He said, “I guess they don’t know what else to do.” So I said, “Well, did they find some information connecting Saddam to al-Qaeda?” He said, “No, no.” He says, “There’s nothing new that way. They just made the decision to go to war with Iraq.” He said, “I guess it’s like we don’t know what to do about terrorists, but we’ve got a good military and we can take down governments.” And he said, “I guess if the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem has to look like a nail.
So I came back to see him a few weeks later, and by that time we were bombing in Afghanistan. I said, “Are we still going to war with Iraq?” And he said, “Oh, it’s worse than that.” He reached over on his desk. He picked up a piece of paper. And he said, “I just got this down from upstairs” — meaning the Secretary of Defense’s office — “today.” And he said, “This is a memo that describes how we’re going to take out seven countries in five years, starting with Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran.” I said, “Is it classified?” He said, “Yes, sir.” I said, “Well, don’t show it to me.” And I saw him a year or so ago, and I said, “You remember that?” He said, “Sir, I didn’t show you that memo! I didn’t show it to you!”

GEN. WESLEY CLARK: Well, starting with Iraq, then Syria and Lebanon, then Libya, then Somalia and Sudan, and back to Iran. So when you look at Iran, you say, “Is it a replay?” It’s not exactly a replay. But here’s the truth: that Iran, from the beginning, has seen that the presence of the United States in Iraq was a threat — a blessing, because we took out Saddam Hussein and the Baathists. They couldn’t handle them. We took care of it for them. But also a threat, because they knew that they were next on the hit list. And so, of course, they got engaged. They lost a million people during the war with Iraq, and they’ve got a long and unprotectable, unsecurable border. So it was in their vital interest to be deeply involved inside Iraq. They tolerated our attacks on the Baathists. They were happy we captured Saddam Hussein.
But they’re building up their own network of influence, and to cement it, they occasionally give some military assistance and training and advice, either directly or indirectly, to both the insurgents and to the militias. And in that sense, it’s not exactly parallel, because there has been, I believe, continuous Iranian engagement, some of it legitimate, some of it illegitimate. I mean, you can hardly fault Iran because they’re offering to do eye operations for Iraqis who need medical attention. That’s not an offense that you can go to war over, perhaps. But it is an effort to gain influence.
And the administration has stubbornly refused to talk with Iran about their perception, in part because they don’t want to pay the price with their domestic — our US domestic political base, the rightwing base, but also because they don’t want to legitimate a government that they’ve been trying to overthrow. If you were Iran, you’d probably believe that you were mostly already at war with the United States anyway, since we’ve asserted that their government needs regime change, and we’ve asked congress to appropriate $75 million to do it, and we are supporting terrorist groups, apparently, who are infiltrating and blowing up things inside Iraq — Iran. And if we’re not doing it, let’s put it this way: we’re probably cognizant of it and encouraging it. So it’s not surprising that we’re moving to a point of confrontation and crisis with Iran.
My point on this is not that the Iranians are good guys — they’re not — but that you shouldn’t use force, except as a last, last, last resort. There is a military option, but it’s a bad one.”
It’s past time to start impeachment to stop this madness.
This is a very long interview with multiple access options.

Romney is a member of a Christian sect that sends kids half my fucking age out proselytizing with nametags that identify them as “elders.” Counterfeit has to be right up his alley.

I wonder how many people here would worry about being “unelectable” simply because they suffer from some of the most common illnesses in the country–major depression and generalized anxiety disorders? (No, I’m not polling; you’re full entitled to your privacy. Just saying, is all.)

That’s only your opinion if you’re talking to an idiot…otherwise, natural selection as the basis of modern biology (or evolutionary theory in general, to be as accurate as possible) is just a gosh-darned
fact.

Delurking for a moment, because allergies are close to home, and my daughter has the most obscure ones that Doctors don’t test for. Mind you, I suspect from what I have read that there are far more sufferers than have yet been identified, and yes, I agree that it probably has to do with hormones/frankenfoods. Anyway, my daughter has Celiacs (gluten allergy which involves wheat, rye, oats etc), is allergic to lactose – any and all derivatives including casein, and has an allergy to a hormone that is produced in all living creatures including fish and shellfish.
Has your son been tested for Celiacs? It’s not a normal allergy test, so I believe one has to ask for it.
Back to lurking.

?@#$%@
#51, forgot to mention, Celiacs can go undetected for a very long time, but it has devastating effects involving the entire body over the long term – may not happen today, but will come back and bite you in many years time. Check out the stuff on the Celiacs website, and get him tested. It’s also a disease that runs in families. My sister found out she had it after my daughter was diagnosed, and my other sister is in the diagnosis stage, but looks like she also suffers.
Lurking for sure now!
The “Spirit of Strom Thurmond.” ????
The only airplane in history built with two right wings….
I love it. His tag has expired.
Is that Bush the Forty-Third…
…or Bush the Farty-Turd?
I don’t know about you, but whenever I think of George W. Bush, I always think of Farts and Turds for some reason.
Oh right, Bush’s nickname for Karl Rove is “Turd Blossom.”
And Bush is the Farty-Turd president of the United States.
And Cheney is an Old Fart…just like Rumsfeld.
And what about Rummy, the Farty-Turd’s former Secretary of Defense. Is he resting comfortably on his laurels after having gotten so many of our soldiers and Iraqi citizens killed?
Ah, the legacy of Bush the Farty-Turd. We’ll be smelling Bush’s legacy for years to come.
