[FDL is thrilled to welcome Pat Murphy to chat with us today. And a big congratulations to the Murphy's on the birth of Maggie -- what a cutie. As with all Blue America chats, please stay on topic in the comments and please be polite. Any off-topic discussions should be taken to the prior thread. Please join me in welcoming Rep. Pat Murphy to FDL! -- CHS]
I was as angry last night about the Inside-the-Beltway Democrats picking Lieberman to speak as Pach– and almost every progressive blogger I know– was. Like Pach, I think a lot of people wanted to give the Democratic Party some room to establish itself without tough criticism from the rank and file as the new Congress began, but leaders like Steny Hoyer, Rahm Emanuel and even Harry Reid have just not delivered. And earlier in the week I was just as pissed off about Hoyer's mega-golf extravaganza with a planeful of lobbyists in the Caribbean, and about Ari Berman's story exposing Max Baucus as the worst corporate whore in the Democratic senatorial caucus.
It made me ask myself if the efforts our community made– efforts that contributed to the enhanced powers of people like Emanuel and Hoyer– were wasted.
And then I read a bill that 4 of our newly elected Democrats — Joe Sestak, Carol Shea-Porter, Steve Cohen and Patrick Murphy — had just proposed, H.R. 960, Enhancing America's Security through Redeployment from Iraq Act. Reading the text calmed me down and then made me feel proud of our efforts to elect anti-war grassroots Democrats and progressives. It made me redouble my efforts at getting Congressman Patrick Murphy to come and spend some time with us online today.
Patrick J. Murphy was raised in a row-home in the far northeast corner of Philadelphia, PA. The child of a legal secretary and a Philadelphia police officer, Patrick led the typical life of an Irish-Catholic kid growing up in the Parkwood section of Philly; he went to St. Anselm’s for grade school and Archbishop Ryan for high school, played a lot of hockey, and was constantly surrounded by a expansive network of family and friends. The lessons that Patrick learned in those early years would help propel him through his career in the United States Army and beyond; even helping him win a seat in Congress at the age of 33.
Perhaps the most important lessons Patrick learned were the values of service and sacrifice.
When Patrick signed up for the Army in college, he was following the example of his father, brother, and 3 uncles; all of whom served in the US military. In fact, even Patrick's name has significant meaning. Patrick is named after Patrick Ward, his mother's childhood friend, who was killed while serving as a door gunner in Vietnam. The example set by his family and his namesake is what motivated Patrick to enlist in the Army ROTC program while at King's College.
It also drove him to leadership roles throughout his early life; student body president at King's, heading up the Harrisburg Civil Law Clinic while in Law School, and leading a massive sandbagging effort in 1996 that was credited with helping to spare the city of Wilkes-Barre, PA from a damaging flood. But it was during his career in the Army were Patrick most fully lived the values he was learned as a young boy.
Patrick's career in the Army first took him to Baumholder, Germany and then to West Point, NY. He began his time at West Point serving as a General Practice Attorney in the office of the Staff Judge Advocate but was soon appointed to be a Special Assistant US Attorney and then a professor of Constitutional Law for the next generation of military leaders. At the time Patrick was the youngest West Point professor since W.W.II. Then 9/11 happened.
Immediately following 9/11, Patrick asked his commanding officer that he be deployed overseas. He was deployed twice, first serving as a Command Judge Advocate for the 3rd Armored Division in Tuzla, Bosnia and then as a Captain with the 82nd Airborne in Baghdad, Iraq. Patrick served in Iraq from 2002-2003, and was later awarded the Bronze Star for his service.
In Iraq, Patrick saw striking indications that United States’ policy in Iraq was flawed. Just ask him about the difference in manpower between the Philadelphia Police Department and the 82nd Airborne in Al-Rasheed, Baghdad. Patrick saw first-hand the woeful mismanagement, waste, and corruption that beset the war from the beginning. He knew something had to change.
The day Patrick was released from the Army in 2004 he drove through the night from Fort Bragg, NC to Philadelphia, PA, finally crashing on a friend's couch in the early morning. A few hours later Patrick walked through the doors of the Kerry/Edwards campaign and volunteered his services. He worked for the Kerry/Edwards ticket as their Pennsylvania Veterans Coordinator. When the bid failed Patrick felt a keen desire to further the message of change, even if it meant making a long-shot run for the US Congress.
After emerging from a hard-fought primary, Patrick took on rubber stamp incumbent Mike Fitzpatrick in what would prove to be one of the closest elections in the country. Running hard on a positive message of change, Patrick defeated Fitzpatrick by a final count of 1,518 votes. Shortly after his election, Patrick's wife Jenni gave birth to their first child, Margaret Grace Murphy. Congressman Murphy was sworn in on January 4th with his seven week old daughter in his arms.
Since taking office, Patrick has worked hard to deliver on his campaign promises, first by helping to usher through the initiatives in the Democrat's 100-Hour agenda, and delivered his first speech from the House floor advocating the reinstitution of fiscal responsibility and a pay-as-you-go system of budgeting. But, some would say, Patrick's main legislative agenda has been focused on the war.
Patrick has a unique profile as the first and only Iraq War veteran elected to Congress.
Part of the reason the folks of the 8th CD elected Patrick was to take a leadership role in this debate and help push Iraq policy in the right direction. Patrick Murphy, with Senator Obama and Congressman Thompson, has proposed the Iraq War De-escalation Act of 2007. The bill would stop President Bush's troop escalation plan and initiate a withdrawal of all American combat brigades from Iraq by March 31, 2008.
He described their bill as offering "a practical, bipartisan option so we can win in the Middle East and start bringing our troops home from Iraq."
The bill would cap the number of American troops in Iraq at this month's level and start a "phased redeployment" of U.S. troops out of Iraq and into Afghanistan, other countries in the Middle East or back home. The phased redeployment would start no later than May 1, 2007. Once completed, a limited number of troops would remain in Iraq for counterterrorism efforts and to train Iraqi forces. He has also sought to combat the wasteful spending he saw in Iraq by proposing H.Res.97, also know as Providing for OIF Cost Accountability.
Last year our Blue America efforts raised Patrick's campaign $7,700. Fitzpatrick has already announced he intends to challenge him to a re-match. In the past weeks we talked about helping freshmen who have lived up to their campaign promises financially so that they are not dependent on K Street lobbyists and special interests. Please give us a hand in helping a freshman who is living up to the promises he made us keep his seat. Here's the Blue America ActBlue Page. There is no contribution that isn't welcome no matter how small.

Welcome, Congressman Murphy!
Just a reminder, please confine all comments and questions to the topic at hand, and chat with the congressman.
Howie!
Hi, Pach; hi everybody. Congressman Murphy is caught up at an event in the district. He’s on his way to a computer and should be joining us in around 15 minutes. Meanwhile I want to introduce everybody to Tim Persico, from the congressman’s campaign staff. Tim was relentless in making this happen today and did more to help me get this together than any other staffer has since we started doing these chats last year. If anyone has any questions about campaigning– rather than policy– Tim is a good man to ask, especially campaigning that involves finances.
DELBERT!
Hi, Congressman Murphy.
I am happy to say I donated to your campaign, and even happier to see that you are living up to my hopes and expectations.
And congratulations for Maggie!
Hi everyone! Thank you so much for having us here.
I apologize that the Congressman is running a little late, but hopefully I can fill in for a little while!
And speaking of finances, it’s important that we support the freshmen congressmen who have been elected and work hard to achieve what we sent them to Congress to do. Patrick was the first co-sponsor of Murtha’s bill and hasn’t stopped trying to put together a coalition to end the war since he got to Washington. The Blue America contributions page for Congressman Murphy opened this morning.
Tim, how much time does Congressman Murphy have to spend looking for campaign donations for the next election?
Tim, do you know where Congressman Murphy stands on public financing of elections?
Welcome Patrick, and congrats
That ship has sailed. We need to hold their feet to the fire and if they do not listen replace them with those who will. Pachacutec’s post last night was good. I take issue with one or two points, but I know that his heart is in the right place. I and many others are very frustrated at the seeming indifference of Dem leadership to fundamental issues. That is what has me most concerned.
You’re a good man Howie. I think this is a good opportunity to thank you guys for all you did in the ‘06 cycle. When you win by 1518 votes, you really know that every cent counted.
I’m curious about the status of the two bills that you mentioned. What’s happening with them right now?
Yeay, Congressman Murphy! Loved that you took your oath with your daughter in your arms, that you taught Constitutuinal Law! I definitely think the military has a better grasp of the Constitution than the government we have. I hope you will remind Congress of what it says and means. I’m contributing to FDL and Congressman Murphy as soon as i get my first paycheck!!
Howie- The re-elect is going to be a pretty tough fight, so I guess my answer would be as much as possible. However, Patrick is extremely dedicated to delivering on the promises he made on the campaign trail, and delivering for the folks back home that put him in office, so right now he is focused on doing just that. Thats why events like this are really helpful.
MayDaze – I’m not sure to be honest.
Revmama – Right now we’re lining up cosponsors for both bills
I know in the last election cycle, Congressman Murphy raised most of his money (75%) from individual donations (while Fitzpatrick got most of his from lobbyists and PACs). This cycle, will you guys be getting more support from Big Business interests?
The Congressman just sent me a text message, he should be on in a few minutes.
This is so exciting, off the thread, but all the young people, just great
http://link.brightcove.com/ser…..d537018586
Haha, well if we got $1 from them it would be more support than last time.
Seriously though, when all is said and done I expect our breakdown will be pretty similar in ‘08
Hello, Tim! Thanks for being such a stand-up (and -in) guy for us today.
What is the most important thing that we (as grassroots volunteers) can do to continue to make the House and Senate more progressively Democrat?
Besides donating to Congressman Murphy’s Blue America page, I mean.
Howie, I think our breakdown in ‘08 will be pretty similar to ‘06. Our % split between PACs and individuals was something we are pretty proud of.
Congressman Murphy was quoted in Lois Romano’s WaPo article on 3/1:
I hope our Democratic Congressional leadership is providing the necessary support to our most vulnerable freshmen — the nation needs their expertise, but they need to get re-elected in their districts as well, which means well-serving the folks who elected them.
How’s that balancing act working out?
I just made a donation for Murphy.
Our % split between PACs and individuals was something we are pretty proud of.
Thanks Jacqrat. To be honest, I might be a little biased because of my role in the campaign, but the most important thing you can do for a candidate you like is find ways to support them financially.
Thanks Pach!
The Leadership has been extremely helpful so far and I know they plan on doing even more.
Hi Everybody – I just got back from being out and about since 7 this morning. Great to be here and thank you Howie for getting this together. Looking forward to our chat…
Pachacutec @ 22
So did I.
Although I am from PA, this is the first time I’m learning of Patrick Murphy. I think it’s great that he’s getting a wider audience.
How much do you think grassroots campaigning can balance big corporate spending?
Congressman Murphy, your story is inspiring! I’ll continue to contribute whatever and whenever I can to your campaign. Thanks Howie for bringing him to the Lake today and for all the work you have done.
MayDaze @ 9
Congressman Murphy, would you respond to this question I posed to Tim before you arrived?
Welcome to FDL, Congressman Murphy. We’ve been wanting to talk with you for a long time and I think I’m speaking for our whole community when I say we appreciate what you’re doing in Congress to end the war.
TeddySanFran – Speaker Pelosi has been terrific to me and to the other freshman. She has proven herself, in my opinion, to be a great Speaker of the House to date…and even more importantly, one of the woman in our country who my newborn daughter can look up to as a role model.
When I said that to Lois from the Washington Post, about the weight of the Army being on my shoulders, I just meant that when I read the emails and letters from our troops overseas, I sometimes feel that they fail to see a reflection of themselves within this Administration, and now have a newfound confidence in people like Tim Walz, Joe Sestak, Chris Carney and I. Tim Walz especially, has really been out front on the national circuit (Hardball, Fox, etc) really taking it to the R’s on their distortions.
Patrick
Hi, I heard today that the follow-up care at Walter Reed had been privatized; the majority of government employees were let go and, of all things, Halliburton is involved.
Could this be true?
Hello Mr. Persico,
A lot of us are in the position you were in a couple of years ago. We have a Republican incimbent, or maybe a DINO, and we need to get a good candidate through the primary. Can you give us an ‘in a nutshell’ strategy for finding and promoting a primary candidate?
Congressman Murphy, I saw you on the television the other night – well done!
Hi Congressman, I am a contibutor, too. My question: Is Congress and the inside-the-beltway gang as out of touch with the feelings of the rest of us as they seem?
Howie – Its funny you mention about what I’m doing to start bringing our troops home. Just today I had a person write in my local paper critizing me for my actions (at least he admitted he voted Republican). Shows you how important it is to write letters to the editor and participate in the netroot community.
I thought the resolution, albeit nonbinding, was a very, very important first step. As you know, I offered a binding piece of legislation with Senator Obama and Congressman Mike Thompson, HR 787, to bring our troops home by March 2008. We’re getting more and more cosponsors everyday…we just picked up Rahm Emanuel yesterday.
Pachacutec @ 23
I’m making one now. I was on the phone, discussing the John Salomon article with my dad. (I didn’t grow up in D.C. because my dad worked for the government.)
So this leads to a question for Patrick Murphy: what do you make of the firings of these Attorneys General, the USAPATRIOT Act provision that lets their replacements slide by Senate approval, and what can be done about it?
Welcome, Mr. Murphy, and congratulations on the beautiful females in your family.
Do you have a sense of how your bill on the Iraq war is being supported? or not?
Congratulations on the arrival of your baby daughter. Oh, and, I love her name!
HotFlash- I think focusing your energy is the name of the game. Go after open seats or incumbent R’s that you can pick off. The sharper your focus, the more effective you can be.
What is your take on Liebermann speaking for democrats today?
Patrick Murphy @ 37
Emanuel wants to end the war! WOW!!! How did you convince him?
Hello, sir.. It’s an honor to meet with you. Thanks for taking the time to talk here today.
In the main post it states you describing the Iraq War De-escalation Act of 2007: “a practical, bipartisan option so we can win in the Middle East and start bringing our troops home from Iraq.”
I am hoping that you can explain to us what your definition of “win” is.
We’ve asked the Administration of their definition (as I believe differs from yours), but we’ve yet to receive a clear answer to that question.
In discussing this specific point with American citizens that are republicans, I’d like to give an educated and accurate answer to this, when they return the question… “What is your’s?”
Thank you.
Congressman Murphy: thanks for taking the time, and it’s great to see you hit the ground running.
A fairly general question: what one aspect of joining the House has surprised you most these past two months — in a good or a bad way?
Yeah Congressment Murphy. I am in Joe Sestak district and volunteered for him, although contributed to you. Je had a volunteer party last night and mentioned how excited he was with the bill you all put forth to bring the troops home. We in PA are so thrilled to finally have some progressives in out state!!! Keep doing a great job.
Rep. Murphy,
Greetings from Alaska. Thank you for your service, both in uniform and in congress. Is there any kind of a sense developing among the newer and more progressive House members that you are a new wave, a movement away from “business as usual” in the House? Is there any “progressive” caucusing going on?
I would be interested to know how you can measure, assess or track the pressures to sell out.
How do we get such a corrupt aggregate in DC? Could most of them have started that way? Do they get recruited by Rahm and others on the basis of malleability? Or is the onslaught of lobbyist meetings and corporate orientaions too much? Is this learned behavior? Is the freshman class subject to coercion? Are they new and frightened? Or are they looking foraward to the perquisites of power?
I ask you becuase of your reputation for integrity and becuase you have likely thought long and hard about what is happeining to you and your freshman colleagues.
Thanks!!!
Pachacutec @ 23
As a former prosecutor myself, I am disgusted by the firings of these prosecutors for DOING THEIR JOBS (Sorry to go CAPS LOCK on you, but that’s how upset I am). Its another example of how this Administration interferes with the seperate branches of government.
HaloBeam – To win in my Middle East, we have to capture and kill Osama Bin Laden (who killed my best friend’s girlfriend, Michelle Hoffman, who perished in the World Trade Center with her father) and ensure there are not any more safe havens in Afghanistan for Al Queda to grow. In Iraq, our troops have accomplished what they were asked to do: depose Saddam Hussein and get rid of the weapons of mass destruction (that was pretty easy, there weren’t any, contrary to what Rick Santorum tried to say).
Congressman Murphy, I know you’re working with Steve Cohen on at least a couple of bills to end the war. He was our guest here last weekend and I just noticed that several people who are donating to your campaign at our ActBlue page today have also been putting some money in for Congressman Cohen. You can tell him he owes you.
Ed*ard Teller and Alison – I have a great relationship with my freshman colleagues. In fact, I owe Peter Welsh a call. He and I talk all the time about Iraq and he wanted to set a gameplan for when we get back to Washington this week to get our fellow freshman on board with my bill (HR 787) so we can get our men and women home.
Patrick Murphy @ 48
Congressman Murphy,
It seems that there has been a lot, and I mean *A LOT* of dis- and mis- information about the WTC attack. Are you suggesting that Osama be executed without a trial?
First, thanks for your efforts, and I can certainly imagine that simply trying to address the war issue takes up 80% of your time.
I’d like to ask whether you’ve found any time to work with other House members on energy policy.
Are you aware of the “Apollo Project”, an alternative energy package supported by some members of Congress. If so, do you view it as viable?
Thanks to Cong. Murphy, and also to Tim and to Howie.
Thanks so much for joining us today and for answering my previous question, Congressman Murphy.
Do your colleagues understand the urgency abroad in the land about ending this war and stopping BushCo from starting another one? I am worried our Democratic majority will be endangered if our party doesn’t do what they were elected to do in 2006. The lag of the People’s House behind the people’s wishes is staggering — and don’t get me started on the Senate’s glacial pace!
Howie – Steve Cohen was pretty great on Colbert the other night. That is my favorite show. My wife and I watch it almost every night.
BTW – I’m sorry if I’m a little slow writing, I’m actually juggling my daughter Maggie right now. Jenni (my wife) is out running errands after we did the handoff at the start of this. Maggie is not loving the formula (Emfamil with Iron) right now so I have to alternate that with the pacifier.
Patrick @54 – what a wonderful image! Go Maggie! Go Patrick!
This question is for Howie. Are you matching contributions by fire pups this week like you did for Congressman Cohen?
And of course, thank you Jenni for letting us chat today.
readerOfTeaLeaves – We are working on energy together, with a working group as well as informally. I know Speaker Pelosi wants to tie Energy Independance into the 4th of July timeframe which I think it brilliant. Before I ran for Congress I used to volunteer with PennEnvironment advocating the Apollo Project.
Congressman Murphy, many of us in the netroots and grassroots of the Democratic Party are disappointed with the congressional leadership. Many of us like Speaker Pelosi’s approach but are very wary of Hoyer and Emanuel. Do you get a sense that these people really want to end the war? Hoyer has a long and clear record of supporting it, not just on October 10, 2002 but all along the way. I keep wondering if these guys aren’t sabotaging Murtha. What do you think?
Congressman Murphy,
What is your take on Rep. Harry Mitchell -AZ CD -05?
To those of us on the ground, it is like a big blank space, he has not opened a local office, his congressional website is only a shell with NO information, we have no clue what he is up to or who is his hanging with….
And many of us would give anything to have a congressman like you here in AZ!
Hot Flash – No, I wouldnt call for executing someone once they are in custody without a trial, not even Osama. I devoted my life to justice as a prosecutor, as did freshman Congressman Mike Acuri (who is one of my favorites, a no nonsense, practical, let’s get the country moving in the right direction kind of guy).
I also taught Constitutional Law at West Point to the new generation of military leaders…one of the greatest jobs I ever had…in fact, I saw some of my former students in Iraq last week when I visited, they are now company commanders and making me so proud. They are watching what we’re doing in Washington and pulling for us to change things too!!!
Democrats appear to be paralyzed in fear when challenged to de-fund the war or shut up.What power does the congress have other than de-funding?The ‘02 AUMF is no longer relevant. Can that AUMF be repealed, forcing the Bush admin. to come back to congress and restate the mission for the troops in Iraq?
Howie Klein @ 50
Please also feel free to tell him that at least one of those (modest!) contributors has contributed to, and supported Republican candidates over the years — in fact, the last fundraiser that I held at my home was for a Republican.
And now, having made a confession that may get me kicked out of the Lake permanently, I will thank you once again.
Personally, I suspect that Chuck Hagel’s comments about an emerging ‘realignment’ are probably more apt than many in the MSM grasp. And since I can’t possibly ‘align’ myself with nutcases who fire US attorneys, lie to FBI agents, and sell the country on K Street, I guess I’m stuck here at ActBlue ;-)
(We used to have environmentally responsible, smart Republicans where I live — now, they’re all ideological wingnuts 8(((
congressman murphy: recently, attn general gonzales said that he didn’t worry about congressional requests for information. does the congress have the will to subpoena him if he continues to refuse to honor requests?
and thank you for being a real man, and proud dad willing to admit he’s caring for a baby. lots of guys are too chicken to do that. mothers everywhere salute you.
Jacqrat @ 57
Oh, you’re killing me Jacqui– just kidding. Sure, let’s set up a match. I’ll match all the contributions that come in for Congressman Murphy (up to the legal limit, of course) between now and 12:30 Pacific Time.
Rep Murphy,
You have given one of the “Democratic Response” radio addresses, and I have always wondered HOW the speakers are chosen each week. Who decides, and on what basis do they make their choice?
(And yes, this question comes out of a deep sense of dissatisfaction with the choice of Joe Lieberman to speak today.)
Speaking of West Point, Congressman: What do you make of the news that cadets are challenging their instructors’ prohibitions on torture by citing the repetitive and successful torture scenes in FOX’s “24?” Do you think it’s wise for the Army to have Keifer Sutherland come visit and talk to the cadets about how “it’s only a TV show?”
Patrick Murphy @ 59
You have made my day! My week!!
I may have to go put more money in Howie’s Till for this one ;-)))
Howie – I do believe Rahm and Hoyer want to end the war in Iraq and are fighting to do just that. I don’t believe they are sabotaging Murtha at all. Of course Hoyer and Murtha had their differences running for leadership, and I was publically supporting Murtha, but I havent seen or heard anything since the Majority Leadership vote that would even suggest anything otherwise. In fact, Hoyer went out of his way to ensure I received my second choice for committee assignments, Select Committee for Intelligence, which he didnt have to do – it was my second choice after Armed Services.
Hi again, Is she fussy? Do you have to walk her around a bit?
I asked up at 32 about the privatization of care at Walter Reed. (I was listening to talk radio in Boston. A caller said that he’d found out last night that the follow-up care had been sent out to Halliburton.)
Say it ain’t so.
Congressman Murphy,
We Dems in Connecticut are still smarting about the Lieberman/Lamont election. What is your feeling about Sen. Lieberman being asked by Harry Reid to address the Democrats?
And by the way – you are the kind of person which makes us feel good about becoming politically involved. Thank you.
readerOfTeaLeaves @ 69
Hey! Don’t hold back! You have just a few minutes left to make Howie SWEAT! Donate deep! Howie is matching your funds, so they go twice as far!
Patrick Murphy @ 61
Thank you so very much for this. I grew up beliving that *everyone* had a right to a trial becasue it was the right thing to do. I am grateful to see that you and others in Washington are working to restore America’s rightful place as an example of justice and freedom.
Patrick Murphy @ 55
I had a hunch dad was babysitting on Saturday. Enjoy it will it lasts, congressman! My wife loved it when I could help give her Saturdays off from the babies.
In your statement with Rep. Sestak on Thursday on the outrageous situation at Walter Reed, you wrote:
As the attached article notes, recovering soldiers have reportedly had their vital rest unduly disrupted during their recuperation from severe battlefield wounds. Furthermore, the Navy Times reports that soldiers were told they must not speak to the media and that “[t]he Pentagon also clamped down on media coverage of any and all Defense Department medical facilities.”
This muzzling of the patients isn’t as alarming as the awful care they’re receiving which brought all this about. Are other service hospitals as overwhelmed as is Reed? Have you noticed, as an ex-faculty member at a service academy, degradation in the quality of schooling and summer training the cadets at West Point, Annapolis and Colorado Springs are receiving? Cadets at the Air Force Academy have been complaining for years about fundamentalist and evangelical Protestants harassing other cadets over religious issues. Apparently, this harrassment has led to suicides and withdrawals from the academy by harrassed students, and transfers and demotions for faculty who complained.
It seems you are uniquely qualified to take a leadership role into any investigation on the quality of education in our service academies. Have you given such an investigation any thought?
Thank you for your efforts on Iraq Congressman Murphy.
I do think we, as a nation, need to have a real and abiding focus on Bin Laden and al-Qaeda, but I disagree on al-Qaeda “growing” in the safe havens of Afghanistan. It was not Afghanis, any more than it was Iraqis, who planned and committed 9/11 or the Madrid or London bombings or earlier embassy bombings, etc.
Saudi Arabia and Egypt did (and do) far more to grow al-Qaeda than Afghanistan. And US invasion and occupation of Muslim countries will always be a rallying point for calls to jihad (not all jihadis being al-Qaeda) and for distrust by native populations in their government to the extent it allows occupation. What normal American would trust a government supported by and working with a foreign occupying army that has eschewed Geneva Conventions, kidnapped and purchased and disappeared civilians, etc.?
I do agree we need targeted military and law enforcement effots to address al-Qaeda and other criminal terrorist groups, but we shoot ourselves in the foot to a) lump all those who fight against the concept of foreign occupation of their countries as terrorists, and b) attempt to utilize our military, including 18, 19, 20 etc. yos, as a standing police force in countries where they do not speak the language and have little to no understanding of, or exposure to, the culture and religion, and where they cannot distinguish between the civilians they SHOULD HAVE BEEN bound to protect, as a quasi police force, and those who spend all of their days coming up with ways to murder those soldiers.
It seems to me that we need to realize throughout the ME that we can not and should not stay as an occupation force. Instead, we need to have targeted missions as necessary and an overall policy in the ME that promotes justice and addresses the real import of what torture by our Egyptian “friend” and misuse of Saudi assets for the benefit of a royal family, over the needs of the many Saudi families, and our US support for those kinds of actions entails.
Al-Qaeda grows best, not in Afghanistan or Pakistan, but in the vacuum left where American commitment to its values fails.
You also might want to share this with your colleagues – Senator Lieberman really has no power should he move to the other side
http://www.myleftnutmeg.com/sh…..aryId=5974
The 107th Congress’s resolution (S. Res. 8) does provide for a shift in control of the Senate if the majority shifts, there is no such language in the organizing resolutions for the present Congress (S. Res. 27 and 28.)
Boston1775 – I havent heard about Haliburton in Walter Reed yet but you can sure as hell believe I will look into that one. We used to call their subsidary, Brown and Root, Brown and Loot when I was deployed to Bosnia.
My first bill I wrote was called the Iraq Accountability Act – it was with the Blue Dogs – and it starts a Truman Committee commissoin to end the war profiteering in Iraq. That bill also is getting a lot of support. I’m hoping the folks in the Lake can help me get more cosponsors on that one.
Hello–Is the Jefferson clause- state legislature impeachment a valid way of changing our commander in chief. Is New Mexico on the right track? Does
Pennsylvania have a shot? Penna. does have a J.
Murta and a P. Murphy plus a certain building in
Phila. at 9th and Market….
Boston1775 @ 32
Boston, we generally try to stay on-topic when we have visiting congressfolks or candidates. More info on that story is available here (ABC News). A good round-up of recent news stories of interest to progressives can be found at http://www.truthout.org.
riffing off what mary said, terrorists will always also be able to recruit and rile up populations to hate us, so long as there is not fair treatment of the palestinians. the two sides in the Levant must be brought to the peace table, and the US must insist that its aid to israel not be entirely spent on military projects. i know it’s hard to speak out on this issue, but pretending its not part of the equation is like pretending that avalanche won’t hit you if you close your eyes real hard.
(wan smile) Thank you, I don’t think I can stand anymore…. Glad to know you’re out there.
Patrick Murphy @
79
The bill number and correct title, please….?
I’d be happy to look at a weblink for this item, and contact my Congressman — but need a link to send to some other contacts, please.
Patrick Murphy @ 48
Congressman Murphy, I’m sorry to hear of the personal loss you/your friend have experienced. I lost two very old friends that day. I’d like to follow up with a question regarding your answer with regard to Iraq. Since our men have already accomplished what they were asked to do, why isn’t there an immediate withdrawal of most of our troops, perhaps say, to finish the mission in finding OBL and the safe havens in Afg.? I’d like to also ask your take on AQ in Pakistan.
Representative Murphy,
My question is, if the President were ask Congress to authorize military action against Iran, would you vote for or against going to war with Iran?
Sue – Well I’m proud to be supported so much by the Netroots. I remember like it was yesterday standing in Yards Brewery in Philadelphia (I was living in New Hope, Bucks County at the time) telling Chris Bowers and Duncan Black that I was Pennsylvania’s Paul Hackett (it was right after his Special Election).
I am not sure how they pick the Democratic National Radio address. I’ll have to ask my Communications Director, Adam Abrams, when I get back to Washington. I assume the House, Senate, and DNC switches it week-to-week and their respective leaders make the decision.
I’ll probably be able to answer one more question…from the smell emanating from Maggie’s direction (she’s next to me, at least she was considerate enough to wait over an hour to make me a present)….changing a dirty diaper is on the menu.
Congressman Murphy—-what is your opinion of the conservative movement’s stranglehold on conventional media?
If it weren’t for the hypocrisy of conventional media, there is no way that permanent military bases and war profiteering would be essentially ignored as motives for entering into, staying the course, and escalating the war in Iraq like we have.
Congressman Murphy—do you think we are really fighting a “war on terror”?
The Center for American Progress’s terrorism index proves that what we are doing clearly is not working, yet we are doubling down on that strategy with an escalation. We also are watching our military waste away while the Taliban strengthens itself and Osama Bin Laden regains power.
What do you think is really going on?
Howie Klein @ 43
A bellweather of the obvious, even Rahm knows when to jump on board.
Let’s make certain his seat is in steerage.
(btw – I am located in Rahm’s district, and received an email poll from him last month on the subject.
1) Do you support the President’s plan to deploy more than 20,000 additional combat troops to Iraq?
No
2) What is your opinion on the direction of the War in Iraq?
Wrong Track
3) Do you believe we went into Iraq with a sufficient number of troops?
Yes
4) Do you believe the War in Iraq is making us safer?
No
Evidently he got the message.
Howie, need any help with Blue America?
Ciongressman
God Bless You
I wish you were my Representitive, but I will have to settle for our representitive while applying the pressure locally.

Thanks for spending some time with us Congressman Murphy. We’d love to sit down with you again when you feel there’s something important you’d like to bounce off us or discuss with us.
Mr. Murphy, I went through my donation list for the last election and was chagrined to see that I had only sent five dollars to you (a five dollar each actblue challenge, IIRC).
I have done you somewhat better today, and I expect it is just an installment.
Like Howie says, we need to keep the gains we made in 06. I see your election as a gain we can’t afford to lose, as a party and as a nation.
Keep up the good fight.
Well – It looks like the last few questions are some doozies. Here we go, I’m glad we’ll hit 100 comments before I sign off.
First, Iran. It pisses me off that some of these guys on the other side who never wore a uniform are so quick to saber-rattle against Iran when we havent even tried to talk to them. (I know ‘pisses me off’ is not supposed to be the vanacular of a congressman, but I was a paratrooper after all). President Kennedy once said, “We should never negotiate out of fear but we should never fear to negotiate.” At least we are now going to talk to Iran about Iraq, but I’d like us to talk to them about their nuclear ambitions and not just bury our heads in the stand.
Afghanistan – Congresswoman Marcie Kaptur was terrific on our trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan last week. She has taken the initiative to address the Madrassa’s (I’m killing the spelling of this), some that are educating young Muslims to extremism. We need to combat this with ‘Soft Power’ and helping, especially in the tribal regions, educating their children in a secular setting.
The Media – Well, I dont think we should hesitate to back down from a fight. We need to communicate to everybody, not just our base. I have been on Hannity and Colmes, local Fox shows almost every week, and local conservative radio (Michael Smerconish is our local and most popular conservative host, he fills in for O’Reilly on RadioFactor often)…as well as CNN, Hardball and the Countdown (just this week). I think it’s our responsibility to communicate to our country through the medium they use, TV and radio…kind of feels like being in front of the classroom back at West Point on most occassions, except I dont get to ask the questions.
Hey, Howie and everyone in the Lake, I cannot thank you enough for the opportunity today to talk to you. I really appreciate your earlier support of my candidancy for congress when no one gave me a shot…and now, when I’m not the most powerful member, you’re still supporting this skinny guy from the Eighth District of Pennsylvania.
Please dont report me either to child protective services, that diaper has aged for 20 minutes now.
Gotta run, thank you so much, and hopefully we can do this again soon. My wife will be back any minute and then we have to take off for events in the district tonight…the life of a new member…I’ll be keeping up the fight and will continue to make you proud.
Let me know if anyone is coming to Pennsylvania or Washington DC, it’d be great to have you stop in and say hello.
Patrick
Wow. Just wow. I am so damned proud to be a part of a community that nurtures and supports candidates of the caliber of Patrick Murphy, PA-08.
Thanks to all who commented and contributed today. It is a terrific feeling to be a part of this very special place.
Wow, indeed. Glad to see Congressman Murphy is representing my parents in PA. Thank you fdl.
Patrick, I went looking for information on Halliburton at Walter Reed. Go to KansasCitydotcom (the Kansas City Star) for this story posted on March 03, 2007:
Army secretary resigns in wake of Walter Reed Scandal by Aamer Madhani and John Biemer (Chicago Tribune)
Apparently Walter Reed awarded a five-year $120 million contract to IAP Worldwide Services…
“The company is tied to a former senior official of Halliburton.”
If I find out anymore, I will try to find your office and send info there. Otherwise, I’ll post here.
Go get ‘em. Thanks
I had the pleasure of campaigning with Patrick Murphy last fall. He was a great candidate and is doing great work already in Congress.

Arcuri, who is my representative and a recipient of a small donation or two from us, is moving in the right direction himself.
As soon as he was elected, Arcuri joined the Republicans (Blue Dog Democrats).
Arcuri replaced a maverick Republican, who once was reported to be considering running in the Democratic as well as Republican primary. He would most assuredly have won.
I am not so sure we didn’t lose when Arcuri won.
Best, Terry
For the record, I wasn’t criticizing Rep. Murphy in my previous post if anybody is still reading this thread.
It is wonderful that such people as Patrick Murphy got elected last round and that he took the time to address all us “extremists.” :-)
Best, Terry
