(White House photo by Susan Sterner. From left: Vice President Dick Cheney, Lynne Cheney, Mary Cheney, Liz Cheney, and President George Bush.)
Via Froomkin, I found James Fallows latest in The Atlantic:
...Even if all those things were true, there could be no less effective spokesman for American concern or for the interests of international order than Cheney. This is the man who has refused to answer to his own public for — well, for anything. For his insistence that everything has gone just as planned in Iraq. For his claim before the war that “There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction.” For his claim after the war that the Iraqi insurgency was in its “last throes.” For his role, as described in prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald’s closing statement, as the central, unindicted malefactor in the Scooter Libby case. Even for shooting his friend in the face. Say what you will about Al Gore’s wooden “no controlling legal authority” rationalization when he was asked to explain campaign donations he received. At least he acknowledged some duty to explain things to the American public.Dick Cheney, the man who is accountable for nothing, is the person who will tell other countries what is “consistent” with a peaceful image in the world?
If you haven’t spent a lot of time outside the United States recently, you may not have been made aware in a painful, humiliating way of how grievously America’s moral standing has suffered because of Guantanamo, Abu Grahib, and the general carnage in Iraq. It’s hard in general to get non-Americans to listen to lectures about seemly behavior these days. It’s hardest of all when the lectures come from the man who, to the rest of the world, personifies America’s squandering of the qualities that made it special.
Gee, you have to wonder, don't you, what the purpose of sending Dick Cheney out of the country for non-existent non-diplomacy is this week, don't you? I mean, other than the fact that his entire family is working on the government dole in one form or another, to keep an eye on all those interests that Dick Cheney finds useful to his agenda, what exactly is the man doing to bolster the US?
Or perhaps, I keep asking myself, there was something going on over the last week that Dick Cheney was hoping to miss out on altogether. Hmmm...let's see. It's not Easter yet. Maybe he's got a hatred of Mardi Gras or something. Hoping to miss the last festive celebrations of Black History Month at the Bush White House? Not likely.
Oh, wait, let's look over here...Libby trial avoidance, anyone? I am so ready for some accountability. Any accountability.
Here's a thought: how about starting with a follow-up on the great questions that Froomkin asks today regarding Cheney's backtrack on his quagmire prediction on Iraq from way back in 1991?
On Friday, I marveled at the logic: "So if I read this correctly, Cheney is saying: Yes, it's a quagmire. But after 9/11 we needed to prove that we weren't weak."But it's more than that, and reporters should follow up on this issue because it is hugely important.
Is Cheney really acknowledging that he always knew that the occupation of Iraq would be a quagmire?
In that case, wasn't it deceitful of him to repeatedly suggest that the invasion would be easy -- including his famous prewar statement that "we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators."
I know I'd love some answers to those questions. How about you guys?

Geez, this is the first time I’ve crashed a thread this high, and I just had to let it out!
Jane, so happy that you and your cell phone and wallet have been re-united! Must have been a glorious event!

What would we do without 911?
Christy,
Is there a way that the congress can delude Cheney’s influence? Can they reduce his pay, for instance, to almost nothing? Does he have a “contract” that protects his pay? Can they let the world know that Cheney does not speak for the American people by virtue of the election?
I met Lynne Cheney once when she was on some Board of Historical something or other. She gave a very scary speech, but I assumed that Dick was just a conservative Congressman from Wyoming.
Boy, did I get surprised. I forgot all about pillow talk. Dickie was a lot scarier than his wife.
to quote Jeff Huber: “Cheney is the worst thing that ever happened to America.”
So was the electrical problem with the plane a rouse do Darth could slink into Pakistan? Never know what to believe anymore?
Other than that obviously inconsequential Libby trial thingie, I’d have to guess that Deadeye is making his “I can beat my chest, can you?” statement to Condi “Like my shoes?” Rice about who is exactly in charge of things including Foreign Policy too.
In Deadeye’s view of the world,
Those that have Dick, do!
Those that don’t, shop.
I have to say that worrying about Jane Hamsher’s phone and the WiFi in the Media room at the Libby Trial was a lot more satisfying than watching the news tonight. Cheney went to Pakistan today to chide Pakistan for not being tough enough on al Qaeda! Pakistan? We’ve been ignoring al Qaeda for four years [that’s right - in three weeks it will be four years] off chasing our tails in Iraq, and Cheney’s bitching at Pakistan? Bin Laden was last seen when he escaped in Tora Bora. It’s on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Now, he’s apparently setting up training camps in Waziristan. Waziristan is on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The camp area is maybe a hundred or so miles from his old camps in Afghanistan.

Accountability is not part of this administration’s vocabulary. Now embolden is a word they love to use a great deal. I heard a speech today of Bush using again. No doubt Cheney thinks that Fitzgerald is embolding the terrorists with this trial(especially if he is next on the list).
I’d love some…but I’m not holding my breath waiting for any of these gutless sycophants to ask a decent follow up.
I just got home from work. What was the update of Jane’s wallet? Did she find it?
So now both Cheney and McCain admit the War would be tough. Why am I not surprised.

and to quote Frank Rich: It’s all part of the “Cheney-Lieberman Axis of Neo-McCarthyism.”
Terry Olson @ 10
David Addington, Cheney’s new Scooter, makes the case that the Vice-Presidency is partly Executive and partly Legislative, in his race to make BigTime accountable to neither. Now that Sy Hersch has revealed the operations run out of NSC or OVP, mimicking Iran/Contra, I expect there’s no way to defund this Vice Presidency. Even if successfully passed in Congress by a veto-proof majority, any defunding would probably result in Cheney simply privatizing the OVP: Blackwater, Halliburton, KBR, House of Saud.

Hi, Christy. Maybe, if the Libby jury convicts, Fitz will decide to pursue lots of answers to lots more questions from the person you mention.
BTW, since I saw Jane at the courthouse today, just want to confirm once again that she is amazing. She lost her wallet and phone–something that would send me over the edge–yet she was calm and unfazed. I think I was more relieved than she was when the items were safely returned. She is putting in long, tedious days of waiting and observing but she is cheerful and tireless. I sure hope the verdict comes in soon as much for her sake as for anyone’s. Hope we will use this opportunity to show FDL a little love with the “donate” button at the top….

Being raised Mennonite has me cautious about looking to the stars, or astrology, or whatever, to explain all the glitches there this morning - the dismissed juror, the lost necessary items, the power outage.
How about metaphor then? It is a long road ahead of us, with glitches and the Fitzian “sand” being thrown in our eyes.
What I truly appreciate about this community is the gracious acceptance of all who come in good faith, within and outside of the borders of the US, and the generally gentle way we all help each other wipe the grit out of our eyes and keep going.
While you sleep, I’ll drink some great NZ wine in your honor. (Yeah, I know that Mennonites aren’t supposed to drink. Sacrifices must be made. Now how many of you are there and how many drinks will I need to honor each and every one of you?)
Jane’s wallet and phone were returned, just like the guilty verdicts will be.
Somewhat pleasant how that works out.

Why doesn’t the Bible burst into flames with that lesbian holding it????
Or was Dick sworn in on Halliburton’s Annual Report?

Also OT but with a hopeful tinge: one of my young employees (18) had to do an essay on a modern day hero. I suggested Jack Murtha and gave her a bunch of info and she just texted me: “I got a 95 on my essay, highest in class!” Hope for the next generation :)
Kathryn in MA @ 29
That was fun wasn’t it?
Well, I don’t know if he’s openly acknowledging it, but some of us have maintained all along that chaos and occupation were the goals in the region. We pointed at the permanent “embassy” being built in the Green Zone and the general parking on the last large deposits of oil. But we were called tinfoil-hatters. I think it’s time to pull out Occam’s Razor here and ask ourselves just what possible motivation would change this apparent insanity into something reasonable, however dark…
NZ—Mennonite, not Amish. There’s some leeway :)
My boss at Mass General Hospital was Mennonite. He decided that he could serve God better by going into medicine than becoming a missionary. He is now dean of Harvard Medical School.
So I think he made a good choice.
Hope I have followed his good example.

Since you are spending so much time on planes, come on over for a drink. The weather is stunning late summer days with highs in the 70’s, the mountains crisp, the lake fresh. We all agree that NZ Sauvignon Blanc is better than most airport beers.
Are you stuck in Detroit, or somewhere else?
quagmire was the plan.
If the goal was (is) to burn down the entire region, then a quick “in and out” war in iraq would never have sufficed. We needed 5 years of turmoil in iraq to build the bases, along with a “strengthening enemy” and cassus belli (sp?) to expand the conflict to Iran, Syria, and Lebanon.
I’d say we’re right on target. As Josh says, expand the chaos outward has always been the plan.

[bold mine; source: Cheney: The Fatal Touch, by Joan Didion, New York Review of Books]
Dick Cheney has never had the discipline to finish what he started, as exemplified by his attempt to earn a PhD. He’s a hanger-on, road Rumsfeld’s coattails, like sort pallid, flaccid political remora, until he reached a point where he could inject himself into the Vice Presidency just as he injected himself into Rumsfeld’s retinue. Cheney has always had “other priorities” his entire life, biting the hand that fed him by rejecting the New Deal Democratic values of his parents, rejecting anything else in his life but his own undisclosed and obscured priorities.
The American public not only deserves and demands to know what those priorities are; it must stipulate and enforce its own priorities upon the man who is being paid to serve them, no matter whether his stooge Addington believes him to be both Executive and Legislative, fish and fowl.
Dick Cheney works for us. Or he doesn’t and he gets the damned door and a boot in the ass aloha.

Have any of our esteemed Beltway Media made an effort to track down and interview the art-curator juror?
This morning I came across the NYT article about Cheney’s trip to Pakistan. I used scissors to cut it out. I then grabbed my pen and marked it up pretty good.
One of the notes I wrote in a margin was “Did Cheney’s daughter Elizabeth (Dept of State) send him on a junket?”
I then gave the marked up article to my chief of staff and told him to store it in his safe.

Though I can’t complain. Way before I moved here, I had to fly through (old) DTW. I was flying to CT, the flight next to me was flying to wherever the team UConn was playing in the Final 4 was from that year (NC?). And they CLOSED the bar between two gates with an overtime hoops game in the Final Four.
New DTW, however, is much better.
Off to board now I think!!

FYI… we are in the middle of a Mercury Retrograde, a 3-week time period (3 per year) when such things are more likely to happen. Computers break down (my own laptop is in the shop), miscommunications occur, things have to be done over, items (especially wallets and ATM cards) are lost. Losing a juror would be more likely during a Rx… etc., etc.
This one will be over around the second week of March…
However, the good news is that a Mercury Rx period is a good time for reviewing, revising, revisiting, etc., anything that begins with re- or other similar actions, like editing. Any kind of reworking.
carolyn urban - where are you? I don’t think comet mcnaught is still visible, but could it have been?

A toast to you, my dear :)
People like Rove have gleaned what they could from the examples of Stalin and Hitler and tried to use the lessons here, where appropriate or possible.
In particular, the “big lie” has become the “cosmic whopper”, magnified and amplified by a compliant media. You just cannot underestimate the importance of baseline cognitive analysis to our situation. Human beings have a default option to consider declarative statements true. When they hear the same thing 1000 times/day and have no clear evidence the statements are true, you can’t expect them to analyze properly.
The “cosmic whopper” is abetted by the “milky way flim-flam”, in which totally contradictory statements are issued by different rep’s of the WH, sometimes on the same day. I have seen this so often that I am sure it is intentional—another way of trying to confuse the public.
Add together the disinformation native pride and a reasonably prosperous populace.. and you get what you see today.
carolyn urban @ 69
Cool. Does anyone know anything about astrology?

Rayne… not yet, but it will be in mid-November, and in Cancer, Sun sign of both US and GWB (as well as yours truly).
I don’t have the charts in front of me, but it will be about 12 degrees, which is probably close to both GWB’s and US’s Sun degrees. I can understand why you would be concerned. It will probably have a lot more to do with our relationship with Iran et al.
Right now, with Mercury Rx during the jury’s deliberation, it could indicate a do-over, but it could also be that they are simply taking their time sorting it all out.
G-D right I’d like to see Cheney on the stand, under oath. For starters.
You’d think that if someone was so damn right about their stance, it could stand the light of day. But it doesn’t work that way with Dick. Why all the double-talk, the deception, lies, and hogwash? Why have the Iraq goal posts been moved so many times?
IMO, Cheney always knew that Iraq would be a long term commitment. Operation Grab Black Gold. Listen America, you can’t handle the truth. You wanna keep driving your SUVs, then shut the hell up about Iraq. Keep shopping and we’ll keep the torture quiet.
The truth just makes Dick, Don, Junior, Scooter and Karl look so utterly debased, that they dare not allow it.
Katrina vanden Heuvel writes that at a time when politics are neither bold nor honest, Jimmy Carter has spoken his mind on the plight of Palestinians with sanity and humanity. The former President’s ideas deserve to be discussed, not vilified.
It appears that one enterprising reporter was able to briefly interview the dismissed former curator.
The curator explained that yesterday morning she was at home when she heard her doorbell ring. She answered the door and found herself looking at a middle-aged blond woman with dyed blond hair and dark roots. The blond reached into what appeared to be a very expensive handbook, then pulled out a piece of paper. She handed the paper to the curator, then turned and walked away.
The curator took the paper inside and saw that it was a copy of a column from the Washington Post written by a Victoria somebody. Once the curator realized the column was about Libby, she stopped reading it. But she figured she was dutybound to tell Judge Walton about the incident, so she did. And that got her dismissed.
[Mod Note; please provide a link or the source of this report.]
Sigh! I long for the day when BusCheney swing from the end of US government ropes …just like Saddam did.
The strangest paragraph in Froomkin’s thorough rundown on Cheney’s current activities, quoted from Hirsch’s newest NYker article:
“Iran-Contra was the subject of an informal ‘lessons learned’ discussion two years ago among veterans of the scandal. Abrams led the discussion. One conclusion was that even though the program was eventually exposed, it had been possible to execute it without telling Congress. As to what the experience taught them, in terms of future covert operations, the participants found: ‘One, you can’t trust our friends. Two, the C.I.A. has got to be totally out of it. Three, you can’t trust the uniformed military, and four, it’s got to be run out of the Vice-President’s office’–a reference to Cheney’s role, the former senior intelligence official said.
The ability of most news people to dissect and analyze the frightening truth seems to have skipped over to an adjacent universe.
Thanks, Karen. Worry about the Mars Rx since decisions made during that period come to no good. Would rather have the clumsy bumbling of Mercury Rx, better to take things slowly and allow more time.
Explains the stupid parking problem on Saturday, ended up on the west side of the Joe, no parking at all at Cobo. Should have left earlier, given myself more time. ;-)
Our cosmic lesson, then: give the jurors time, gang. They’ll do a better job for it. Just pretend it’s beer-thirty and chill.
I meant to say handbag, not handbook.
And I was just kidding.
I don’t want to start any rumors.
ZCheney owes Bin Laden a huge debt of gratitude for making that big deposit of politidal capitolfor the bush administration on 9-11.
They have more than spent it up in Iraq.
Sorry, Earlobe, but that’s the kind of joke that can get you a visit from folks in dark sedans.
Mods, I think I might suggest housekeeping. Include this comment.
What happened between Singapore and Pakistan? Did Cheney stay with the Bin Ladens in KSA or go pray at Stalins grave? Doesn’t he have some press following him in a seperate plane? My what a job that must be, keeping all the flies out of Darths photos.

I must say I had an immediate sense upon hearing Jane lost her wallet that it would be returned.
Tony Snow spent a lot of his press briefing today trying to
notexplain what Dick Cheney has been doing and saying on his Asian trip. Quagmires, the al Qaeda loving Pelosi, disappearing Brits, Pakistan, Cheney’s psychotic comments made for a hard day for Tony the Suit Snow.My favorite part was on a topic near and dear to me, the 2002 AUMF against Iraq.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news.....226-1.html
Well, it was nice that the reporter asked the question but it’s clear that neither Snow nor the reporter has actually read the AUMF recently. The operative text says this:
The reporter was essentially correct in pointing out that the Iraq in the AUMF is not the Iraq of today but goes astray with the WMD part. The relevant UN resolutions cited in the AUMF preamble are all from Gulf War I. The main one of these is 687 which orders Iraq to renounce WMD, nuclear weapons, and ballistic missiles. 678 is also important since it authorizes “all means necessary” although the action in question is the expulsion of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. There was no UN resolution sanctioning force for Gulf War II. If the UN resolutions cited in the AUMF were a stretch in 2002, think of what they are now 16 years after they were agreed to.
Snow’s reply is a rambling reference to resolution 1723 from Nov. 2006 or 4 years after the AUMF. I think it is clear that the Administration’s position is to ignore the actual text of the AUMF, hope that nobody goes back and reads it, and conflate the AUMF language with more recent UN resolutions than those which the AUMF references. (1723 btw mandates the multi-national force only to the end of 2007 with a review no later than June 15).

in fact, i fear that he’s engaged in making all the requisite deals he needs, with allies like australia and “allies in name only” like pakistan to set up an attack of iran.
there are certain assurances that cannot be given through diplomatic channels (cables can be saved, don’t ya know, and the state department is filled with do-gooders), and wheeling-dealings that require the physical presence of the man who’s running the authoritarian show.

The Washington Post’s crush on right-wing bloggers
by Eric Boehlert
Two years ago this month, Kurtz noted, “Many bloggers are careful and thought-provoking, others partisan or mean-spirited.” The question is: Why has the Post has made a conscious decision to champion mean-spirited bloggers like Malkin at the expense of the thought-provoking ones?
http://mediamatters.org/columns/200702270003
I agree that Mr. C is trying to maintain his maneuver room so as to respond to a Libby guilty verdict. He seems committed to any action so long as it delays his day of reckoning on his disastrous and duplicitous Iraq policy.
Mr. Bush may be guilty of being cynical, hypocritical, lazy, uncurious, and easily duped about the many topics that do not interest him. But it is Mr. Cheney who has initiated the principle policies and methods of this administration.
That includes one of his first actions, which was to have issued an executive order delaying the release of presidential papers. Those due for disclosure at the time included details on Iran Contra, an operation Mr. C seems to have resurrected in slightly different mode.
As a related matter, starting with this budget, Congress needs to insist that all military spending be included in the DoD’s main budget and be subject to rigorous oversight. Enough with these manipulative, “emergency” spending authorizations, which allow Mr. C to avoid routine Congressional oversight.
Millineryman (95) - wow. That kind of sucked the wind out of my sails.
Earlobe (98) - don’t mean to be harsh, but we all need to keep in mind a couple of important points while we’re talking.
First, there are visitors here lurking that are here to the benefit of those who do not mean us well. There is ample data that shows these footprints. A joke can be taken completely out of context and blown up out of proportion and used against this community, or can simple be reported as truth to folks who are obligated to check these out.
Second, there are visits here from folks from assorted government domains. Many are friendlies, some are neutral, and surely some aren’t either of these.
We should all treat this space like we would a conversation in a public venue. Others can hear you, and depending on what is said, the context in which it is said, these others may react.
