Jamison Foser at Media Matters has a great assembly of the "best of" Republican talking points faxes around the media. And how easy it appears to be for the GOP to download their planted political swill into the text of various columns and shows without any semblance of critical thinking kicking in on the part of the transcribers.
How sad. To wit:
You might want to make sure you're sitting down for this one.
This week, the Republican National Committee distributed materials attacking Democratic presidential candidates for such sins as … liberalism. Hillary Clinton, for example, is described as a "lifelong liberal." John Edwards is a "liberal," as is Barack Obama. And Chris Dodd.
Shocking, isn't it?
Strangely, some journalists apparently thought the RNC criticizing Democratic presidential candidates was unusual and surprising enough to merit a news story.
Oh yes. Shocking. Glad I was sitting down, thanks Jamo. (Honestly, the entire article is infuriating, which means that you should go read it right away.) Perhaps the folks in the "journalism" community ought to stop taking their cues from Hedda Hopper — who used to denounce liberals as communists because it suited her vindictive streak during the rampant "me, too!" finger pointing of the McCarthy era – and start asking some skeptical questions.
Here, let me give you a few examples:
– Why is this person faxing and/or e-mailing these talking points to me? What is their aim in doing so?
– Is it because, as Cathie Martin testified during the Libby trial, I, a reporter, have been singled out as a non-thinking shill and a good forum for these viewpoints to be aired without any difficult questions whatsoever being asked?
– If that's true, what does it make me? (Ten bonus points if you can spell "stenographer.")
– Maybe I should, you know, try and find out if the allegations printed therein are actually true before I repeat them far and wide?
– What if I actually did my job and fact checked these — and then called them on the ones that are outright lies? Ooooh, what if I did it publicly?
And that's just for starters. Imagine asking even more questions and actually trying to find ALL the answers to them. Critical thinking is so hot. Please try it. I mean, hell, The Defamer does more critical thinking these days than the WaPo editorial page, which is printing wholesale yet another weekend of GOP talking points, today starring Frank Luntz who argues that the Republican party should start talking like they have reformed their ethics (all the while continuing to DO the dirty tricks — you didn't think they would honestly reform, did you?).
Honestly, after reading through Jamison's article, you are going to want to heave something across the room (Suggestion: pillows. Your disgust is not worth wrecking your furniture.) Let me give you another peek:
If McCain's flip-flops are described as positives by political journalists, what do they make of him skipping votes?
John McCain skipping a vote — a vote about war, at that — is a sign that he is a "maverick." And not just any "maverick" — a "maverick" on an "upswing."
We wish we were making this up. Oh, how we wish we were making this up. But no.
Meanwhile, CNN went to the trouble of pretending that it had stopped calling McCain a "maverick" … all so it could tout the maverick's return. On-screen text during the February 22 edition of CNN's The Situation Room read "McCain: A Maverick Again?" It had been two full days since a CNN reporter referred to McCain's "independent thinker not beholden to any political party" and more than two weeks since CNN correspondent Jamie McIntyre referred to him as "maverick Republican John McCain."
At CNN, apparently, making it nearly three whole weeks without describing McCain as a maverick is cause for a segment touting the moniker's comeback.
Is this a press corps or a pep band?
I know what I'm voting for this morning. How about you? (Quick, is that Mark Halperin on the triangle?)

Christy!
Good Morning, Christy!
F I T Z !!!
Did the jury come back yet? :)
Long Life to ReddHedd & her new CR-V!
Should be an exciting week at the courthouse!
personally, I am hoping mccain is their candidate for 08
number one, we know enough about him to beat him
number 2, if he wins it will be a one term presidency, he’s too old to go more then that
When you say liberal, communist, socialist, etc. you’re supposed to sneer.
perris @ 6
McCain is old and seems ill. If the R’s think they can win with him as front man, the question becomes who will be his Veep? Or should that be Grand Vizier?
HotFlash @ 8
As long as he doesn’t ask one Richard Cheney to help vet VP candidates. Look where that got us LAST time out… :(
EPU’D again-
Well, I hope you people like your Hondas, you’ll be driving them forever. We still have a 94 Del Sol still humming along. Although we only use it for fun being you can’t fit 2 people plus a purse in it.
I am a left-wing liberal. I am a radical. And I am not one bit ashamed. I am also a life long Demo. Of this, sometimes, I have been ashamed. But most times I have been supremely proud.
Gore/Clark in 2008! Yes, I have an agenda.
epu’d to tell everyone I’m heading north and will see all L8ter 2day
John McCain an independant thinker, not beholden to any ploitical party except the Republican Party around 90% of the time.

If being liberal means being open-minded, unprejudiced, progressive, enlightened, tolerant and unbiased.
Then not being a liberal means being narrow-minded, bigoted, prejudiced, opinionated, biased, influenced and impartial.
Call me a liberal—please!
Good morning, FDL!
Christy, I very much need to talk to you about a local race. (It’s very important to talk asap.)
I wondered if you might email me at the link. I’m very worried, concerned, and a little sick to my stomach over some things that happened. I need to talk to your site about this ‘underground’.
Personal attacks on Hillary have a tendency to make me angry. If I sense that anyone from my party is doing this, I will defend Senator Clinton against these attacks, with gusto.
McCain’s support is cratering…cratering badly. The media is going to have to get onto some new subject because their love for McCain is going to be for naught.
The wingnut wing of the R-Party still can’t comprehend how the R-Party can live without them…yet interest in Giuliani may prove that is the case.
2004 might have been the high watermark for the radical fundagelical movement in American politics.
2007 may be the high water mark for the neocon movement. It may also be the boiling point for what remains of American representative democracy.

Oh I’d absolutely love to see the Republicans run McCain.

silence at 16 — feel free to e-mail me at ReddHedd AT firedoglake DOT com. It’s a busy day at Casa ReddHedd, but I’ll try to get to it at some point today.
Haha, NPR’s Wait Wait don’t tell me is lampooning Ted Well’s closing statement, calling it his best Al Pacino impersonation! Attica, Attica!
Fitz and FDL!
p.s. You might want to check on Seymore Hersh’s “Bush into Iran” piece in Mar.4 New Yorker ( I hope its ok for me to reference this here)
Good morning, this is a hit and run post…
They really blew the weather forcast here in DC. We were expected to have ice / sleet. We’re getting snow, biggest flakes I’ve ever seen.
The roads are horrible, horrible, horrible. I saw a major snow plow, two ambulances, and a fire truck stuck on one winding road. Turned the corner, and an SUV flipped on it’s side. Everyone looks fine, and the EMT folks told me everything was under control. (I of course offered to help).
It sleeted underneath the snow. If you’re in the DC area, my advice is to stay in and enjoy the snow. The roads are worse than they appear.
Off to shovel and take care of the neighbor’s pets.
Pat
ok. I’m back. Did I miss anything? Did the jury come back???? (hehe)
US generals ‘will quit’ if Bush orders Iran attack
SOME of America’s most senior military commanders are prepared to resign if the White House orders a military strike against Iran, according to highly placed defence and intelligence sources.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/t…..434540.ece
now to read what I missed in just an hour. dang. always behind (at least not EPUd tho).
But but but… Aside from them saying ‘liberal’ like it was a bad thing, Hillary is *not* a ‘life-long liberal’. She was a Goldwater girl, she has said so herself in her bio “living History” and to, among others, Katie Coric and millions of viewers in June of 2003 here. (search or scroll down about 80%)
It is too much to ask for ony one person to call them out for every single falsehood and misleading statement. But it’s possible to pick one or two ‘pet facts’ that we are really researched up on and call or write to source everytime that lame old lie gets trotted out.
Good old Frank Luntz, one of the people I have to thank for the current dark times in my country, since our beloved PM loves meeting with him and taking his advice something we had a reminder of this week, just like taking Grover Norquist and Ralph Reed advice because Harper thinks they were also great consultants. This is why politics in America is so nasty and dishonest and now we are having it imported into our land by our movement conservatives. Luntz needs to be taken out of the picture as much as possible, he is unfortunately too effective, just remember what he managed with “9/11/ changed everything” meme for the GOP.
This guy is scary. He is clearly exceptionally skilled with language so he has to be aware of what kind of evil he is promulgating yet is more than willing to do so to make a buck. I find this something I cannot understand. I am a decent writer, if a bit long winded, and I know how to write great rhetoric with powerful emotional overtones too, especially if I am not being limited by having to connect it to actual reality. I will never do that though because I see it as a perversion of my writing skills and my duty as a citizen of a democratically organized country which relies on informed voters to function properly and Luntz’ techniques prevent the citizenry from being an informed one, at least not informed by reality/truth anyways. The sand (aka dishonest information/framing/spin Luntz comes up with) in the gears Luntz’ work creates in democratic systems cannot be overstated. Got to love the willingness to create fictions that sound good for a buck regardless of accuracy, truthfulness and whomever gets hurt in the process (even the nation as a whole), by comparison a prostitute on his/her back being done every which way possible is performing a far more honest and ethical service than what Luntz does with his language skills.
(Yes I know that is harsh, and I want to make one thing clear, I have no problems with prostitution, pimps I do but prostitution itself I do not. This is in no way meant to dnegrate prostitutes but to underscore just how much below basic prostitution Luntz has gone with what he does.)

I almost heaved when Jim Cramer (that loud- mouthed financial TEEVEE screamer) said on Matthews today that John Edwards is a Trotskyite. Because he’s a torte lawyer? WTF?
That these terms are thrown around and let to filter into the insipid minds of those who would listen is abominable. And would anyone with an ounce of curiosity read further about Leon Trotsky just to see why Cramer would use such a reference? I fear not too many would.
“Iraq poised to hand control of oil fields to foreign firms.”
Mission accomplished.
thank you Oklahoma Kiddo, thank you so very much for that – doesn’t mean it will stop Cheney, but have been waiting over a year to see such whispers – Praise God !

I do not want Senator Clinton to be our next prez. I will attack the Senator’s political positions only. And harshly. Same for the rest of the candidates for the Demo nomination for 2008. I view personal attacks as ‘dirty pool’.
Scotian @ 27
Luntz is not a prostitute, he’s a hitman. Although, we didn’t need to get our hitmen from the US, when we have our own home-grown David Frum.
Our local Libertarian paper put Victoria Toensing’s article (see link below) on the editorial page. Talk about irresponsible and disgusting. She questions why only Libby was put on trial. Her suggestion of candidates to put on trial (in order):
1) Fitz
2) the CIA
3) Joseph Wilson
4) the Grand Jury itself
5) Ari Fleischer
6) Richard Armitage
7) yup, the U.S. Justice Department
Have we really gone this far over the edge?

I read the Frank Luntz op-ed in today’s Post. He was trying to explain why the Republicans were crushed in the November 2006 elections. How he could write more the 1,600 words and not once mention Bush or Iraq is beyond me. Even a fifth grader could tell you what went wrong.

Hersh is on CNN w/ blitzer now talking about teh article…
A few months ago, the GOP pulled this same tired, cookie-cutter tactic of branding any Democratic candidate in sight as a “liberal” and “too extreme.” Then they got their asses handed to them in a general Congressional election. And after that, they just kept doing their same-old, same-old.
I say, “Bring ‘em on.”

Not at all surprised, but incredibly saddened. Empire behaves this way. It’s called extortion.
So is the writing on the wall visible yet?
*Cheney says all options on table.
*Gates says for the “umpteenth time” no plans to attack Iran.
*Pentagon holds secret press conference to point finger of suspicion at Iran for supplying weapons to Iraqis.
*Blair says no plans to attack Iran.
*UK paper reports Israel seeks overflight paths in Iraq.
*Israel denies.
*3 Gulf countries to allow overflights for attack on Iran.
Good cop/bad cop.
It is all building up to something.

Scotian, it is so depressing to hear that the likes of Reed, Norquist and Luntz are infiltrating Canadian Politics. When I lived in NS in the late 90s, I was horrified at the rise of Reform Party, but to see that this element has made its way into the Conservative Party is well, really discouraging.
BTW–I really love reading your commentary on the enmeshment between Canadian and US politics. I have always felt that the US would be a better country if we heard more news about Canadian politics and policy. Esp wrt to health care.
Shorter RNC talkingpoint to all pundit-media reporting on any member/action on behalf of the republic party.

Today is a photographer dream. Big, fat, wet ones are hitting the ground, covering up the sleet from earlier. In the time it took to clean snow off two cars the ground was completely covered again. I think they underestimated the call for 1-3 inches of the white stuff. It is literally ‘raining’ snow. Wow.

Jane Harmon -Duncan Hunter up now on Wolfie in response to Hersh.
Hunter (of course up first) even though Democrats are in the MAJORITY in the house wolfie…stammering and talking about contingency plans that always exist.
Harmon: If we are to ever initiate action against Iran, then need congressional approval. First she says we know Iran existential threat to Israel (we’ve known that) Second Iran’s centrifuge technology not as advanced as they say. Third talks about sanctions against Iran (which we forget to talk about) that should be done. Support Burns diplomacy on the matter.
Harmon says intelligence on Iran is quite inconclusive on the matter of Iraqi weapons and nuclear capability. Says this stuff out there might be disinformation and not based on actual factual intelligence… we need to be careful that not same thing happens that happened in Iraq…She reminds Wolfie she’s chair of House intelligence committee.
Hunter…responses…ummmm, sanctions sanctions, blah blah…ummm nuclear threat…ummm..ahhh
PS. Hope I’m not doing something here I shouldn’t be doing in this thread. They at commercial break so I’ll stop.
A modest proposal:
Anyone in the process of running for President of the United States must resign his or her seat in the United States Senate. Our Senate has become nothing more than a launching pad for presidential campaigns (are we over a dozen yet?). We should not accept such a state of affairs in what was once the “world’s most deliberative body.”
We have been sold yet another bill of goods by the corrupt national media. The (invisible) actions of our Congress are of no import, nor concern, but the President is the end all, be all, of our federal government. Kneel down, and worship, America: Your president is your monarch, and so, therefore, are those attempting to succeed him. You have no voice of your own in your government. The Congress is nothing but an amusing sideshow.
And by all accounts, Carl Levin’s pathetic performance on Meet the Press this morning helped keep our Congress out of the national news, yet again. Harry Reid’s righthand man, that Carl Levin, and my contempt is beginning to know no bounds, for our so-called Senate Majority Leader.
I do thank Deborah Howell, however, for exposing the man responsible for the travesty that donw @ 38 refers to: Robert Kaiser is the name, donw: He is an Associate Editor at the Washington Post, and has been employed there for more than 40 years. Kaiser is also obviously a skilled propagandist, and used his exposure by Howell to gloatingly claim that the Toensing hitpiece was a great “success” for his newspaper (in part because of all the feedback it engendered). But we now know who Kaiser is, we have a name and a title, simply because readers rightly complained about that despicable op-ed and graphic last week, which itself resulted in Howell’s follow-up report this week. Howell tells us that Robert Kaiser himself “solicited” Toensing’s propaganda and its irresponsible accompanying graphic. Score one short advance for accountability.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 26
For the objecting generals to resign would be a mistake IMO, they should remain to be legally removed all the while refusing to pass on illegal orders and create the time necessary for the orders to be rescinded or countermanded. Otherwise, a repeat of Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre” will allow the apparatchiks to run things as they see fit.
I don’t have the link but just Friday last, the Stennis has met two other carrier groups already in the Persian Gulf. About a fortnight ago, the Reagan carrier group had steamed and was expected in the Persian Gulf area about the end of February. That to my counting is four carrier groups there about now. I recall it might have been the Guardian.uk that carried that information. Also, there are air bases established in Bulgaria/Romania for eventualities, easy bomber striking distance to either Syria or Iran. It doesn’t look like there will be a lot of time left, sorry for the paranoia, saw the same shite for Iraq while Congress fiddled away. All the best……

Its called Deep Integration and it’s been going on for nearly 20 years. You ar correct, it was Reform Party but also Brian “NAFTA is my legacy” Mulroney (and his best fanboy Conrad Black) and here in Ont Mike Harris.
Done in wherever possible under the radar by changing policies and regulations in Ministries rather than through legislation in Parliament. Another tactic is neutralizing ‘competitive’ governments — a favourite is to amalgamate municipal govts, which destabilizes them while pols infight and institutions scramble to homogenize services. Here cities were amalgmated into regionsl govt’s in the name of efficiency, then the province decided funding formula for education taxes, for instance. School boards can’t ask their taxpayers for more, and the province has made it illegal for a board to not balance budget. Fun! Music and art programs slashed — frills, you know — and one fund has to repair musical instruments, replace worn-out shin pads and fis the leaky roof. Then they moan, “Look at the wait times/test scores/recidivism rate/whatever. Oh dear, the system isn’t working! We’ll have to privatize!”
Feh.
Hotflash:
I agree his actions are those of a hitman, what I was referring to is the skills he is perverting to be able to be one and that I find it such a perversion/prostitution of those skills that I made the comparison I did. Believe me, I haven’t forgotten our own Frum, but Frum was never able to do that well up here, not like he was able to do within the GOP.
Woodward Hollow:
I opposed Reform from its first birth, and thankfully it never appealed beyond a fringe level in my region and Province (fringe in terms of not just mentality but also those so frustrated with the status quo politics that they would embrace anything to shake things up in Ottawa) despite its eventual success by stealth in the Reform/CA driven/shaped CPC.
I watch American politics for how it influences my own, because America is so much more powerful across the board than we are, the idea that our politics could influence yours more seems a bit odd to me. We do have fairly different political cultures (although if Harper gets his way that will unfortunately change, we are already seeing the first steps down that road from him already) than yours so I doubt the more mild variant will be able to be heard over the much louder and harsher variant which is your political dynamic these days.
I will though be more than willing to bring a Canadian perspective, including how we are importing American policies and tactics as well as how we differ if you like. I am very complimented by the fact you thought so well of my comment in your post the other evening regarding the judiciary issue. Don’t worry, I may not comment all the time here but I will continue at it as time permits and as the domestic political environment permits, because until Harper is defeated and his kind of politics discredited that has to be my primary focus.
So Hillary, a former Goldwater supporter is a lifelong …..librul? /sneeeeer

Christy, this just isn’t healthy or productive. I can’t fathom why you would say one “should” read it. We’ve had years of outrage, outrage, outrage, and MORE outrage — and I share the feelings, absolutely — but this also hasn’t done a lick of good. None. Nada. Nichts. Rien.
No amount of outrage will ever make the loonies change their tune. That’s what the blogosphere doesn’t seem to get. The bad guys will never change. And they’re in charge! Now, what does that say to you?

Yes, I saw signs of all this when I was in NS (I think the Toronto area was being amalgameted then, or just had been–I am fuzzy on dates). The Norquist-like effort to completely sabotage the government was obvious on a number of fronts, but as you say most particularly schools. And I had forgotten about the unholy alliance between Reagan, Thatcher and Mulroney, so thanks for reminding me.
The odious Hunter tells Blitz that sanctions are not to be trusted because the Koreans were reduced to eating bark yet they managed to build some nukes.
He is comparing a cult of personality type leader in a closed society with the relatively open Iran.
Both have crazy leaders, but only in the case of Korea does that leader have any real authority.
Iran has been trying to talk to the US for years.
From the above Hersh article:
“Iran-Contra was the subject of an informal “lessons learned” discussion two years ago among veterans of the scandal. Abrams led the discussion. One conclusion was that even though the program was eventually exposed, it had been possible to execute it without telling Congress.
As to what the experience taught them, in terms of future covert operations, the participants found: “One, you can’t trust our friends. Two, the C.I.A. has got to be totally out of it. Three, you can’t trust the uniformed military, and four, it’s got to be run out of the Vice-President’s office”—a reference to Cheney’s role, the former senior intelligence official said.” [end Hersh quote]

Great catch, Christy! This ties in with what Matt Taibbi talks about in his latest column. This is why I refer to the US press as the GOP/Media Complex.

Equally import article, at least to some of us is this article about Al Gore and his possible candidacy.
As political officer for the Second Life Liberation Army, Cahill is passionately committed to righting what he considers the wrongs of a world that exists only on the computer servers of Linden Lab in San Francisco.
Linden is the company behind Second Life, a virtual world in which Internet users act out parallel fantasy lives. They date. They build houses. They work. Some players support themselves in real life by selling goods or services in the game.
Some see the space as a utopia free of real-world constraints, where they can build their vision of a perfect realm from scratch. It’s a place where denizens can reinvent themselves as a supermodel or a rodent, own an island or fly, no plane necessary, to a virtual Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
In the last year, the number of people who had visited Second Life skyrocketed from 100,000 to 2 million. As the population grows, early denizens are learning the truth of Jean-Paul Sartre’s observation “Hell is other people.”

Watching Levin on Meet the Press today, I was struck by his complete acceptance of the Republican meme on Iraq. He bought into the idea that any cut in funding for the Iraq occupation amounts to failure to support the troops.
Maybe this is smart politics. Perhaps instead of trying to correct an established misconception, it’s easier to simply work around the existng ideas, i.e., as Levin said, by modifying the authorization for the use of military force (AUMF). Of course, any such change would either be filibustered or vetoed, the net result being that Republicans would be stuck with their votes to defend in the next election, but no relief for the troops.
There seems to be a consistent if misguided tendency for our leaders, both political and military, to be constantly fighting the last war. If a vote against the Gulf War became a political negative, one must therefore vote for the AUMF. If cutting funding for Vietnam became a liability for Democrats due to the “stab in the back” theme, then we must not even consider cutting funding for Iraq.
The Republicans will certainly claim that the “surge” must have “time to work” until Bush’s presidency, at long last, expires. The only hope for timely change in Iraq is by tying troop drawdown to the funding Bush needs to continue the war. By not trying to change the current conventional wisdom regarding cutting funds, the Democratic leadership is dooming our troops to continued suffering for the next two years.
This may be good politics, but is it really good policy?
Woodrow Hollow:
Hotflash raises some very significant points regarding the deep integration issue and how long and stealthily it has been going on. This is being done under the noses of most within our respective countries and is something that troubles me greatly. A certain amount of integration is inevitable, you are essentially our sole neighbour (well Greenland and Russia but they are not bordering our main/major cities by several thousands of kilometers) and an economic powerhouse that especially requires lots of raw resources of which Canada has a fair amount. The problem is for many of us in this country is though while we accept that a certain amount of economic integration is inevitable and not automatically a bad thing we do not want political integration which alas these forces do want. They want to gut our ability to act as a sovereign nation and instead be a part of for lack of a better term fortress NA. I guarantee you though that is not where most of my countrymen and women are at so sooner or later this is going to explode and when it does prepare for long media blasts in both countries about how that explosion is anti-American intolerance. I say that because it is the favourite tool of those that shout down any of us that are concerned by the idea of becoming too Americanized as a society.
I personally do not follow that issue as closely as others do, and Hotflash clearly looks to be one of those that pay close attention to it so I expect Hotflash would be the better person to ask for any additional references than I. I will endorse Hotflash’s concern though; this is a real problem that is happening under the radar for the most part. Even in the online world it is not as prominent as one would have thought it should be given the seriousness of the issue, but as I said it is being done very stealthily making coverage of it harder and the concerns raised about it easier to dismiss as tin foil hat stuff despite the reality of it being anything but.

Imho that will never happen unless and until a (please Gawd) Gore entry sucks all the air (aka money) out of HRC’s campaign. Only then… and if then.
Pride and ego is perhaps the biggest stumbling block to ’statespersonship’? ;0)
old gold @ 80
Even when the “other side” is all, and only, about absolutes, “possibilities and compromise” be damned? We (and the Democratic Congress) have to adjust to the reality of the circumstances we face. We have no one to compromise with, at this point, except those who have demonstrated their clear contempt for our Constitution, and an ongoing reckless disregard for the well-being of the country. And those hostile-to-democracy incumbents know how to unite, unlike the Democrats, and thus in the first two months of the Democratic Senate, have more effectively blocked progress by the Democrats than the Democrats ever used their minority blocking power to impede the Republican-controlled Senate.
I did not in fact see Carl Levin this morning. I simply read excerpts of his “depressing” interview by some bloggers, including Levin’s statement that Lieberman is “a man of conscience.” I assumed Levin was on NBC to promote the roll-out of a proposed repeal of the 2002 AUMF by the Democrats. If he was, it apparently was not a highlight of his performance, but I defer to those who actually watched his interview.
Knowing what we know about Senator Clinton’s views on foreign policy, how in the world could any rational Democrat vote for Clinton for president?
Yes, even then. If we become them to beat them, have we?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 96
I have no idea. Imho the presence of ovaries in both candidate and potential voter is a pisspoor reason. It would have to outweigh rationality, or else said “Democrat” would be wearing a nice shiny gold necklace with a TRIANGULATED pendant labeled DLC.

Christy, or anybody else with qualifications to know — is there any reason why Sealed v. Sealed cannot be U.S. v. Multiple Parties, versus any single party?
Lot of us have kicked around the idea this was an indictment against Rove, or an indictment against Cheney…is there any reason it cannot be against more than one, and maybe more than Rove and Cheney if multiple subjects?
It occurred to me while pondering the rolling Saturday Night Massacre of the USA’s by Abu G. that the USAG is seeding the available USA’s with future special prosecutors, or limiting the field of choices for future special prosecutors. And then it dawned on me that the Sealed v. Sealed indictment is a metaphorical gun against those who might try to stop Fitz. Could we be seeing a massive, meta-level chess game using USA’s as pieces on a board where Cheney is the Black Queen?
In the last year, the number of people who had visited Second Life skyrocketed from 100,000 to 2 million.

Are these people voters in the real world?
This administration, with the complicity of not a few members of my party, the Democrats, have brought us to the brink of world war.
Rayne @ 100
Sealed v. sealed could be anything v. anything, no limit on the numbers. That’s whole point of being sealed, so you can’t tell
lhp, do you think Fitz is done with the matter once the trial is over?
Rayne @ 100
Alos, I think there is a lot more going on with respect to the manipul;ation of the US Attorney’s Offices than we yet realize. Yes, I think there is a meta level chess game being played.
Hpow glad am I that the Comey’s and Fitzgerald’s of this world have pieces on the chessboard?
Very glad

They can be leaked. They should be leaked. Journalists who leak them, or report on them for what they are, are doing their jobs. Laughing openly — naming and shaming — those journalists who are too fucking lazy to do anything other than add their byline to a press release, is the best approach we can take. While we see dingbat regurgitors of Conventional Bullshit such as Ann Kornblut given new jobs and a higher profile, the task continues.
And it’s time to close down the 501(c)(3) false-front operations, which behave like Cayman Island maildrops for corporate malevolents.
looseheadprop — thanks much, appreciate that greatly.
Another question for you: what’s the chances that Abu G. could yank Fitz and replace him with another prosecutor, ostensibly as a “staff rotation”? Investigation wouldn’t change, but the prosecutor would…
ember @ 104
It might depend on how the verdict comes out
Somewhere between Metternicht and Mill, we’ve lost all the original meaning of “conservatism” and “liberalism” and apparently our schools are not trying very hard to correct the misconceptions.
Its is really just a case of “them” versus “us” and the labels “liberal” and “conservative” have no real meaning beyond what those people label themselves.
Just like the term “commie” comes from the same root word as community, the word “liberal” comes from the same root as liberty. Most “conservatives” will only speak both these words with a vile sneer.
Words are ambiguous, at best, and much too easy to manipulate by these new-age sophists like Luntz and Rove, who depend on an ignorant, Bart Simpsoned society, to enable them to frame their subterfuge.
Fox News is their favored medium, with the rest of the greedy MSM wolfpack close behind, lapping at the drippings.
They all owe Prop 13 and Ronald Reagan (the great de-communicator) a huge debt of gratitude, for aiding in the stupification of our culture, allowing them to concoct new, nefarious and emotionally charged meanings to our precious words.
Rayne @ 10:01,
right or wrong wrt to your USA’s speculation – again I am relieved you are on our side – sweet jesus that makes sense
While congress debates the surge and the republics call for time to allow the surge to work. Lets keep in mind the surge (escalation) started (arguably) the last week of Dec or first week of Jan.
As a small aside, I wonder just how much money we have lost in downed helicopters this year?
Rayne – Not very long ago, I considered Carl Levin to be one of the best Senators in the Senate. Then Harry Reid seemed to latch on to Levin as his “guru” for foreign policy, and ever since, Levin’s been the “compromiser” for Reid in the Senate and on television, it seems to me. My trust in Levin has seriously eroded.
old gold – I liken this to a confrontation with a notorious bully. Sure, we can remain ‘pure’ and keep to ourselves or try to calmly negotiate, while the bully ignores us and continues to beat up our classmates and threaten the world at large. OR, we can briefly meet the bully head-on with his own tactics, and face him down, before restoring and enforcing an atmosphere of respect and polite debate. Otherwise, we just wait the bully out at his convenience, and let the damage be done, while the bully lords it over the weak with impunity.
We must right our ship of state, and that’s going to take getting down in the dirt until we can restore an honest public discourse. We are not dealing with people of good faith in the federal Republican Party, and it is the height of folly to continue to pretend that we are. Those who fought the Revolutionary War, I imagine, could sympathize with our quite-desperate need to ‘get real.’
Obviously, your mileage varies. Harry Reid, however, is apparently in your corner. We’ll see where his approach gets us, because we don’t exactly have any say in the matter. Citizens who attempt to influence the Congress today might as well be pushing on a string, for all the good it does.
Fitzmas at 9:42, per Hotflash, thanks very much, looking forward to the second half.
Rayne @ 107
From Chicago? de jure he could do it tomorrow if he wanted to. When Fitz’s 4 year term expired (he is now a hold over) it looked like Abu was going to do just that. Abu even paid a very odd and ominous trip to “inspect” Pat’s office.
Senator emeritus Peter Fitzgerald (who nominated Pat for the job in the first place) mounted a vigorous push back PR blitz which apparently worked.
Abu cannot himself give Pat the heave ho as Special Counsel B/C Abu has an even bigger conflict of interest than Ashcroft did.
As an”inferior officer” Pat reports to what’s the guy’s name? (Margolis?), who has a pretty serious reputation for personal and professional integrity in his own right. I don’t think it would be too easy to get him to Saturday Night Massacre Pat from the Special Counsel gig.
let’s ask our Wahabist friends, shall we ?
NABLUS, West Bank – Dozens of Israeli jeeps and armored vehicles poured into Nablus overnight Sunday, placing large areas of the city under curfew and conducting house-to-house arrest raids in one of the largest West Bank military operations in months.
The army also took over local television and radio stations, ordering people to remain indoors and warning residents that the clampdown would remain in effect for several days, Palestinian residents said.
pow wow, Thank you for saying so well what you said to old gold at #112. As someone else mentioned humiliate and sunshine.
LHP – You have an email at your “liitle used” lhp address.
If there’s no verdict by Tuesday evening, would this be cause for concern?
OK kiddo – The DC snowstorm may cause a delay, no?
I’ve added camomile tea to my popcorn diet.
Looseheadprop and Christy: Thanks for your insight! What do you think the chances are, if Fitzgerald is one of the US Attorneys Bush/Gonzalez’ crosshairs, that investigations would begin when a new administration is sworn in, or would people just let it go? I would love to see Fitzgerald retained or reappointed in the next term without having to work under that creep Gonzalez, especially with the bombshell Sy Hersh dropped on CNN today that loose moneys from Iraq are being used to fund Sunni jihadist groups with ties to Al Qaeda to combat Hezbollah, without any congressional oversight. Rayne @ 100
Rayne, I know Levin is your Senator, and he certainly has a better voting record than either of my sorry Senators. Perhaps I was not clear in that I was not criticizing Levin per se, but rather the acceptance of conventional wisdom by the Democratic leadership, for whom, IMO, he was acting as spokesman.
If I had to bet, I’d say jury Wednesday or Thursday, with the caveats that 1) I have no friggin’ clue and 2) the amount of time seems to me independent of any outcome probability.
There’s a lot of evidence to go through, and nitty gritty for each count. Imagine getting twelve people to agree and understand the same thing in the same way. There will be group dynamic pressure, however, not to keep the jury out for another weekend, though. These people want to get on with their lives.
Those are my guesses, but if there’s an earlier verdict, I won’t be surprised. I will be a little surprised if they take the whole week and continue to the next week.
One more point I’ll add, old gold: We are not yet at the stage of physical violence in our politics, at least. So the tactics under consideration are hardly mortal combat. But those political tactics I recommend may very well help to forestall and prevent actual physical violence and similar destruction down the road. That’s the point.
Adopting some perhaps unsavory political tactics in the short term, in order to prevent far more destructive consequences down the road absolutely is “beating them” in my opinion. But it’s not about a “win” or “them” per se — it’s about the consequences to our country and the world if we (through our Congress) fail to act.
Christy, I was thinking earlier that it’s funny how Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert managed to stay out of the Libby drama, isn’t it? They’re about the only journalists Fitz didn’t even think of handing a subpeona too, right?

I don’t see how this strategy would work due to the following:
1) I think if a consortium of generals did not resign, but refused to execute an order of the Commander-in-Chief, it would be called a Coup d’etat.
2) They would instantly be removed from their responsibilities.
3) They would probably be carted off to jail on possible charges of treason.
OTOH, Attorney General Elliot Richardson and his Deputy William Ruckelshaus resigned and their resignation is what caused the overwhelming reaction to what came to be called the Saturday Night Massacre. In the end, although Archibald Cox was removed as Special Prosecutor, his work was carried out to its fruition by Leon Jaworski. Ultimately, Nixon’s actions were counterproductive. I hope that’s what would happen here.

Pow Wow, I share your fervor for stopping this tragic war. I am, however, a realist. Standing up to a bully is a good strategy when you have the muscle to beat them. At this point we are well short of the political muscle [60 votes in the US Senate] to do so.
At this point it is my opinion that pitting the good against the perfect is wrongheaded.

Well, I’m still waiting for anything good, never mind perfect, to emerge from the Democratic Senate. Jim Webb gives me hope – he seems to have his finger right on the precise Bush signing statement language that accompanied (in order to dismiss) the language of the 2002 AUMF, which Bush may well use to cover an attack on Iran. What’s needed is a way for Webb’s insight and good sense (and that of other principled Senators) to be politically implemented. We need nonstop strategizing and tactical ingenuity in our Senate right now to make any progress, but all we seem to get is a warmed-over 1970s approach (from those, at least, not otherwise engaged in their campaigns for the Presidency).
You are to kind. I guess at this point in time in our desperate grasp for signs of proactive rebelliion against the neos, we should consider tepid to be warmed-over…

I can’t help wondering through which how many current or potential investigations Abu G. might find himself the target; if he’s aided and abetted all this racketeering going on, have to wonder at what point he’s finally nailed. All these USA’s getting yanked and all but one appear to get resoundingly positive comments on their performance, save from persons they might have been investigating. How many of them might have been getting to close to including Abu G. in their scope?
And in the mean time, the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy continues to crank away, trying to obscure the crimes and the coverups scurrying around in the background. So damned frustrating…

My pleasure, silence (& Jesselyn) @ 161. Three small kids and multiple sclerosis (is it?) and she has to endure that sort of treatment at the hands of her own government… We’re racing downhill on our way to the lowest common denominator of standards for our federal government. Sort of like the multinationals shop around for the cheapest labor and loosest regulations, in whatever forgotten corner of the world they can find them.
HotFlash and Rayne – In the D.C.D.C. (D.C. District Court) “Sealed v. Sealed” is in fact the standard nomenclature for sealed cases, by all appearances. “U.S. v. Sealed” is apparently not used in that district for sealed cases, having something to do with their software originally, I think. There are regular, and ongoing, filings of “Sealed v. Sealed” cases on the D.C. docket, so the title alone tells us nothing in particular. What might tell us something is the timing of two different sealed cases that were filed the week following Leopold’s Saturday article last May (as regards grand jury timing, etc.). Jeralyn checked yesterday, and at least one of those two cases is still sealed today. It could mean something, or it could mean nothing. [I’m keeping my mouth shut about it, more or less, seeing as I suggested some time back at TNH that Leopold might want to tread carefully, since a sealed case is presumably sealed for a reason.]

(wobble-wobble) (wobble-wobble) :) Knock ‘em dead!!
Speaking of good vibes, true story —
The other couple’s mom got the word “LIGHTHOUSE” which she drew, reasonably enough, as a tall cylindrical object (of indeterminate size), with barber-pole-type painting, and something roundish on the top sending out circular-shaped arcs — intended by her to represent the light waves emanating from the top of the “LIGHTHOUSE”.
(Now remember, this is a true story!) :)
Her 13-year-old-boy took one look and (quite reasonably) guessed “VIBRATOR!” which caused us all (except his Mom) to dissolve into gales of hysterical laughter. Mom, for some strange reason, turned a lovely shade of pink.
Which was not, for some strange reason, alleviated one iota by her son’s aggrieved protestation — “But Mom, you have one right in your night table!”
The game instantly broke up and we never spoke of it again. So think of those good vibes during your interview and you’ll do just fine. No screaming aloud though.

Not following an illegal order cannot be turned into either a coup d’etat (no state is being overthrown by the refusal) or treason (the undermining of legitimately issued orders in this instance). In both, the Uniform Code of Military Justice not only upholds refusal of illegal orders, it actually demands refusal be followed. The officers would be removed from duty, but not instantly, communication with subordinate ranking officers would probably provide no replacement. What would happen is the creation of time to contradict the order. More importantly, such action would upset any time co-ordinated action to where “mischief” could be thwarted. The military do not operate in a communications vacuum, that manner of story would assuredly spread far and wide, and with reason. No military tribunal would ever find against the UCMJ defence of refusing an illegal order.
