Great gray owls are quite a bit larger, and with different facial patterns; also, they are most commonly seen in more open areas (meadows, etc.). This looks like a northeastern or northcentral forest from the picture, which is ideal habitat for barred owls. Spotteds look similar to barreds from the back, but they’re found in Pacific NW coniferous forests, so all signs point to barred. Great picture!</p> It’s definitely a barred owl.
