Finally, we get to Best Supporting Actress. Boo yah! It's Jennifer Hudson. YAY! (And yes, Teddy, mercifully she has taken off the metallic shrug. Without the jacket, the dress is much lovelier.) What, you don't know Jennifer Hudson's amazing voice? Well, get to know it. You are clearly going to be hearing a lot more of it in the future.
Any surprises for anyone this evening? Any favorite moments thus far? Consider this an open Oscars thread.

YESSSSSSSS
Big Al!
Yay, Gore!
Yes!! Gore!!
Holy shit, Wingnut land is gonna freak!
Twisted Martini @ 5
Let em.
“We were moved to act by this man…” nice!
Gore! The earth!
EPU’d
I watched a movie (several years ago, a rental I think) that I cannot remember the name of.
Small cast set mostly in a large (British?) home with both Vanessa and Lynne Redgrave. Anyone know the name of the movie I am talking about?
Gore wins!!!!!!!
I have had the perfect day!
Nice watching this with you guys.
Run, Al, run!!!
Al!
Tipper!
No, one more to go Amy: Melissa for Best Song!!
Woo hoo! Our first Academy Award Winning president!
Was that Laurie David up with the crew?
Ennio Morricone — woo hoo! Amazing composer.
I tell ya, he’s the One!
Yes, Laurie was the brunet in the black dress at the left of your screen.
Pleading utter ignorance of all things movie (yeah I know – I’m sorry) but I never did catch what category Gore’s Oscar nomination was in?
dab_from_CT @ 14
yup she’s a co-exec producer on AITruth
Suzanne @ 18
best documentary feature-length
musicsleuth @ 14
Again, EPU’d. YoYo Ma’s album of his music is amazing. Magical, moving.
Suzanne @ 18
Best documentary feature (I believe)
An Inconvenient Truth wins!! Ha, ha, suck it, pillboy!
Al Gore One Globe, one oscar, one nobel, one reelection at a time.
The Mission is one of my favorite soundtracks
Suzanne @ 18
Best Documentary, I think.
forgot to add to my top five, er ten, Malena!
and so is the untouchables
Thanks, Teddy and LLib. Sweeeet.
WooooHooo – The Untouchables
Albatross @ 13
How could I forget? Thanks, I love the suspense. Go Melissa!!!
We sweep the Oscars and then Our President can turn his attention to picking up his Nobel prize
Mute
the success of the current singer utterly and completely escapes me.
dab_from_CT @ 32
What you don’t like Celine?
dab_from_CT @ 32
ha ha you funny dab!!
The dress Celine Dion is wearing to perform in is so much more flattering than the one she was wearing earlier, I think.
whew that’s over
Was it Pach or Trex who got dragged to see her by a couple of Lakers at Yearly Kos?
Twisted Martini @ 34
No. I’m sorry to say I do not. With a passion
god, i love ennio!
Anyone speak Italian?!
I think that was the first time I listened to a Celine song in its entirety.
Wow didja catch a look at that asian-inspired jacket the AfricanAmerican gentleman was wearing, with the big gold medallion-things on it? I love it when the lads dress outside the box for the oscars. even leo’s skinny tie.
That’s Quincy Jones I think…
TeddySanFran @ 43
Quincy Jones – yes, making quite the statement!
TeddySanFran @ 43
Wasn’t that Quincy Jones?
They ain’t gonna play him off, he wrote the STFU music…
yes, Quincy Jones
LoudounLib @ 45
That’s a great outfit Mr. Jones has
Twisted Martini @ 47
ha ha, funny, but that was a quick break to commercial, no?
Agreed, TSF – he wears it well!
morricone’s music is always tearful
Yeah but the commercials don’t seem as frequent tonight. Maybe it’s just me.
I know Clint made spaghetti westerns, does he really speak / translate Italian? Translating Ennio’s speech for Lifetime Accomplishlment
Twisted — I don’t think it is just you. They seem to be spacing the commercials out a bit more. (Or perhaps they are just more interesting and so don’t seem to drag as much this year?)
You’d think they would have some good commercials tonite.
Yeah, Huge Jackman
jackman and cruz
Huge Ackman!
Hugh Jackman **swoon**
Hugh Jackman is hot. No two ways around it.
That dress Cruz is wearing is my favorite so far, although I’d prefer it in a darker color.
dab_from_CT @ 56
love him!
never heard of “the good german”….was that clooney?
Phillip Glass…
Christy Hardin Smith @ 61
mine !!
ccmask – I think its Versace
Twisted Martini @ 59
That too…
I love when a gentleman gives a lady his arm.
ccmask @ 62
A shade or two darker and it would be perfect.
Thats the guy who did Brokeback Mountain
Christy Hardin Smith @ 60
My my, he seems to have the highest swoon quotient so far.
Works for me.
Wingnuts will go crazy with this years’ Oscars.
Ellen
Al Gore
Mescans
Are my Gobal Village Idiot prejudices showing, or is this the most international oscar of all time?
ok, hugh jackman does nothing for me :)
TeddySanFran @ 73
You forgot the subversive penguins
Paul Newman in Hud
tsf-lol
Twisted Martini @ 76
I haven’t seen that one. Are they like teletubbies?
Spiderman!
Crazy Horse @ 74
Yes, very international – very nice.
My how a collar can ruin an otherwise fabulous dress.
Not teletubbies, but environmentally aware. Wingnuts feel it is brainwashing kids to become GreenPeace activists.
Crazy Horse @ 74
straight from the 20s, they look like my grandparents’ wedding photo
Crazy Horse @ 74
Yes it is – making amends?
I just don’t like that dress. The platinum color doesn’t work on her. Is it me? The cut of the dress is lovely, but the color is just washes her out entirely.
Why do we keep talking about the wingnuts going crazy? The wingnuts always go crazy. They’d go crazy if they lost, they’d go crazy if they won, they’d go crazy in all cases. Scaife pays them to go crazy as part of the Right wing propaganda machine. It’s about time these blithering wingnuts were relegated to the ash-heap of history along with neocon fascism.
Okay, sorry, I’ve totally spoiled the Oscar-night vibe…
Yay, Little Miss Sunshine!
Good – it was such a clever script
Albatross – No you didn’t, you go bird!
Albatross @ 87
no, you haven’t, but everything you’ve said is true
Have to add that to the netflix list
Crazy Horse @ 74
That’s what they said at the beginning of the show.
Seconded, Al. Fuck the wingnuts.
isn’t pilobolus un-fricking-believable!??
i love those dancers!
I could do without the exposition/thank you cam guy
They just made a The devil wears Prada shoe!
Had to rewind to catch the dancers again
creepy HI DEF comment from “speech guy” ewww! re; jennifer lopez
Kathryn in MA @ 97
Thanks Kathryn, I couldn’t figure out what that was supposed to be.
Woo hoo – Dreamgirls songs.
Scooter Libby.
I just didn’t want 100 posts on an fdl thread without mentioning scoots.
Twisted Martini @ 83
Weren’t there also references to them being gay or accepting a misfit representing gayness?
ccmask – and contempt for Lieberman
Great voice – American Idol is good for something!
Or I’m sure the wingnut trifecta was in there somewhere.
ccmask @ 103
Good one ;-)
uh oh KD may be in trouble.
That girl really wears that red dress.
Jennifer can flat out SANG…
Ann in AZ @ 104
that happened in the animated shark movie, too, right?
RevDeb – Thank you for hosting a lovely dinner party in anticipation of the verdict. ‘Z’ was a perfect movie to watch afterwards.
wow, beyonce and jennifer, awesome music tonite, all of it
Damn, some singing
Kathryn in MA @ 112
If the verdict comes in Wed. Thurs or Fri. we’ll do it again w/o Z, we shall obsess over KO etc. instead.
GO FITZ!
Kathryn — Jennifer Hudson was my pick her year. I really wanted her to win — just an amazing voice. And a lot of heart behind it. The year I stopped watching was the year that Carrie Underwood won. She’s very good as a country singer, but that year I loved Anwar Robinson — he was amazing, and I hope we hear more from him at some point in the future, very talented guy. (And yes, this is way more American Idol than anyone ever needs to know. But, living in the sticks, it’s good to get some entertainment somewhere, I suppose. *g*)
wow, just wow…..i don’t even sing happy birthday at parties
wow this is some singing
no shit, they got 3 songs up?
Gospel backup! whoa!
Twisted at 119 — Yep — they had three songs in contention this year.
ellen’s “i would not wanna follow that” wasn’t really that funny the first time. certainly not worth repeating.
oh, travolta. more scientology
Melissa!!
MELISSA
woo-hoo !!!!
wow
Mellissa gets it!
Wow – she beat Dreamgirls
Go Melissa!!!!!
Now….It’s Perfect….
A portent of things to come?
I love travolta.
chicken skin
She thanks her wife.
Wingnuts overboard!
So Al’s little movie won both of the Academy Awards that it was nominated for! That ought to piss some people off quite royally! This is great!
Amy at 128 — I am so glad the hospital has WiFi. :)
first of all I want to thank my wife
YAY MELISSA
ruh-roh…..wife word…..it;s only okay when you are outing a spy…. not talking about your life partner
My wife is making me go to bed, been a blast y’all! Catch you in the AM.
Not bad from Melissa, eh?
Melissa thanks her wife and Al Gore – we are not red or blue; we are green – we are the generation that can change things.
RevDeb @ 133
Really! I was just imagining Rush tomorrow
ccmask @ 62
I love it, too. I actually think the color looks great on her.
RevDeb @ 133
707. Thant is so damn funny revdeb
ccmask @ 103
danke, we don’t forget, we’re just partying.
Who’re we gonna send over to RedDumbFuckistan.com to get their reactions? I can’t go; it’s really too stressful.
Hey, before I forget: thanks you guys for hanging out with me at my little Oscars party. :) This has been so fun — and I really needed a break from all the news this evening. Thanks much.
RevDeb @ 133
And their kids, I think. I was so busy being impressed by the win that I could barely wrap my head around what was said.
RedDumbFuckistan.com
lmao
I’m packing it in for the night – i have a phone call tomorrow concerning if i get hired or not. Hmm and snow to shovel in the am.
Ahhh! Melissa kissed her wife! Woo hoo!
TeddySanFran @ 144
707!!!!
I like it that they are spreading the wealth this year with many different films getting notice. It is a respectable field this year. Glad everything is getting a bit of something.
((((Christy)))) thank you!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 146
And thank you for hosting these threads!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 146
THANK YOU, excellent hostess, for throwing this swell shindig!!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 146
Yes – it’s been a lot of fun. And it was great to see Al win
dreamy Will Smith to present now!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 145
Thanks back at you. I needed a break from the serious waiting and trying to get work done in between waiting.
i think will smith is so sexy just because he has such optimism charisma, energy
Oooooh — Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals. Love that movement.
TeddySanFran @ 157
I love me some Will Smith :-)
Yeah, I think I’m gonna quit for the night too. Just bask in the glow for a while, and then dream nice dreams.
btw, for those who haven’t seen Florian von Dannermark’s “The Lives of Others,” well… it’s the best film about humans who are theatre people up against Stasi people and some are changed ever. artists and police and surveillance and military commisions act and and survival despite it all… with a great script. Umhh, see it.
How can a specie be capable of the brilliance we have witnessed tonight and Iraq?
one of the rare times when residing in the pacific time zone is actually a plus.
Thanks for hosting, Christy.
Hopefully we’ll have a guilty verdict tomorrow.
I’m trying to hang in here as long as I can – have been up since 4 a.m.-ish, had to work today :-(
Old Gold at 163 — Becaue people are stupid? (Yes, I am stealing Wizard’s First Rule here.)
from the4 comment section at lgf:
OK, I couldn’t look away from the train wreck that was the Oscar presentation for hte Goracle’s horror flick. I could not help noticing that whoever the schuck was that actually won the statue and was doing all the talking at first said that ol’ Al has been fighting to fix this global warming thing for 30 years! He must have been talking about dog years, because I’m old enough to remember that 30 years ago the harem scarem talk was about the coming ice age!
http://littlegreenfootballs.co…..d#comments
OMG – who put this collage together?
ccmask, you are brave to check in on the wingnuts!
what was that?
You know what ccmask – I love that we get under their skin – their day has come and gone
(in re. to live televison events, that is)
rosalind @ 165
Mr Rosenbulme was very good in Blood Diamond.. but the movie was average, imo.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 135
So am I! They moved me to ICU, I’m on a respiratory and can’t talk now, but they let me have my laptop. Oops, I’m so excited that I’m setting off bells again! I’d better calm down….don’t want them to take away my toys.
They don’t know what to think of me up here – they’re unfortunately used to comas. I’m 45 yrs old, totally stable and cogent – just can’t breathe on my own. So I’m sitting hear watching the Oscars, reading and commenting in the blogosphere. They promised they’d leave me alone and let me play as long as I don’t beep!!!!
This is so surreal…..
Thanks guys…
Can’t think of a better way to pass this time.
The major awards await and I’m looking forward to them, but I don’t think anything can beat seeing Gore and Melissa up there. And, yes, I LOVED hearing her thank her wife and their children. How beautiful was that, huh?
Will Smith is a great guy to work with as well…from the folks I know who have been lucky to do it. He is gracious, giving and thoughtful.
Here’s another…
My daughter (12) just made the comment , “Why do you hate everything so much” regarding the idiot Oscar show. I told her that I hated these bags of wind who’ve never accomplished a single thing tearing down my country I’ve fought for and my way of life…..
then one of the directors of Letter’s from Iwo Gima at the end of his thank you’s, thanked everyone who’d ever worn the uniform for our country.
Best Dress? Without a doubt the gorgeous gown that Kirsten Dunsts is wearing! Incredible!
oh my, Get well Amy. Glad you could be with us this fine evening.
Amy – our thoughts are with you.
Oh, no – I didn’t know Darren McGavin had died
i’ve always thought jodie foster was gorgeous, she looks beautiful tonite
i see dead people
Wonderful tribute with the film effects. Nice touch to show us what they have done….
TeddySanFran @ 184
;-)
Amy,
may you breathe easily and deeply of the healing wishes being sent by the FDL community.
Stapleton and Palance was news to me…
i loved tonite’s oscar’s, so inclusive, so international and so fun! that’s what i want young people to think about the next election, the next candidate
Ellen . . .red, then white, then blue.
Oh and before I forget…
((((((Christy)))))))
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
You literally made this day wonderful for me from start to finish.
And tonight’s party was a great idea. Maybe it’s just me, but hasn’t it kind of feel like a pajama party, guys? (as opposed to Pajama Media)
Oh, and TSF – you crack me up….
ellen’s opening outift: red, then white….. and now blue…..love it!
What is up with Philip Seymour Hoffman’s hair?!
Amy in Asheville @ 191
NO BEEPING !!
feel better, Amy, and heal
Amy, we’re pulling for you :-)
Yes, Helen Mirren!
Helen, YES!
Oh, yay! I adore Helen Mirren!
more chicken skin
I’m ready for it to be over now. Anyone else?
I could do without the spokesgeek
Kathryn in MA @ 149
Hope you get the best answer, whichever it is.
RevDeb @ 200
Still hanging in here, but starting to fade!
I’m waiting for Best Actor. And then…sleep.
musicsleuth @ 201
i hope they lose this innovation for the 80th
Thank heavens, no work tomorrow…matter of fact, no work until 3/5 :-)
TeddySanFran @ 204
second.
hubba hubba Reese!!
whew, I was so glad to see I wasn’t in the “In Memoriam” section.
Just kidding, guys. I’m not going anywhere.
Amy in Asheville @ 176
Hi Amy! Christy throws a great party, eh? What a hoot, you can’t talk to people in the same room and here you are chatting nineteen to the dozen with a couple hundred people across the country and around the world. WiFi!
Peter O !! come on Peter
or FW
Forrest!
i gave him the oscar when i saw the trailer
valletta @ 213
me too
But I thought Peter might win
Did you see Forrest on SNL? His singing? Fabulous!! Turns out he was an opera student @ USC.
Ok, come on Marty…
Eureka Springs, AR @ 214
so did he :)
number 9 will be the charm
which means he’ll make another movie,,
It’s about time….Marty!
Oh yay! Scorcese! About damn time.
yo, martin, say hello to my little friend!
See you in the am.
Sleep tight everyone.
Forrest is such a wonderful actor, but I have to admit that I was pulling for Peter O’Toole because he stole my heart the very first time I saw Lawrence of Arabia.
Good night, RevDeb
Night RevDeb,
May flights of imploding wingnuts sing thee to thy rest.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 222
yeah, the look on Pete’s face was kinda sad.
well, that’s wonderful for marty.
Sleep well, RevDeb.
Thanks for your thoughts
Did I miss a lifetime achievement award?
Whoa, Diane looks great
Jeebus — Diane Keaton looks awesome!
Trex has Fitzmas Eve? upstairs
Wow – that’s a shocker – everyone thought The Queen would win
Night everyone — some FABU TRex coming up next!
Wow…with such varied reviews here tonight on Departed.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 230

Christy Hardin Smith @ 230
I want to be Diane when I grow up!
Thanks for having this party….I enjoyed it. And, with luck tomorrow might be a good day too…off to sleep for me.
Good nite Ellen
adios a todos!
fitz! manana
Danke, alle.
Night guys. Thanks Christy.
Sleep well everyone.
Dream of verdicts to come…….
nah….
take the night off and dream of all the eye candy we got to see tonight.
g’nite Amy, best wishes for a swift recovery
heading upstairs….
Thanks, Christy. It’s been swell.
I realize that the Academy members vote according to their own, Inside Hollywood logic, and that it’s a travesty that Martin Scorcese had never won an Oscar before (which is why he gets it this time), but The Departed was not even close to being a great movie. Not even close. Yes, it boasts an impressive cast, and DiCaprio in particular really raised his game, but it was also extremely sloppily edited, it had some really weak character development, Nicholson was allowed to revert to blatant scenery chewing, and it was waaaaaayy too long.
Really, one of Scorcese shabbiest films, so let’s just consider this a win for Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, King of Comedy, Raging Bull, The Age of Innocence, and the rest of his amazing body of work.
the oscars kinda sucked. i live blogged them… click my name to see it on USELESS tHINGS
Reese Witherspoon – the best dressed woman of the night, followed by Helen Mirren. Post the pictures.
