Scooter may have been a frustrated and creatively impoverished author, but he is making his way into popular culture in ways he never probably anticipated (and one would imagine doesn't quite appreciate). Vanity Fair tips their hat.
Any Scooter sightings in your neck of the woods?

Libby is goin’ down. I refuse to think otherwise. My God.
It’s been 3 and a half years since this started, I guess waiting a couple more days for a verdict isn’t so bad. Right?
It takes time to go through each count and sort through all the documents
I want Cheney, Rove, Bush, Rice, Gonzales and Rumsfeld. Am I a dreamer, or what?
Fitz..Jane!
Waiting on the word..Pins&Needles!
:: never thought I’d post like number 5..View up here is nice..
What we know from the Libby trial is that BushCo deliberately manipulated the media to promote the Iraq War. And we know that representatives of the MSM acted as whores in promoting the war. The verdict on the role of Libby in obstructing the Fitzgerald investigation will not change what we have learned as a result of this trial.
I haven’t seen much about the trial on the news this weekend.

Evening, Jane. No Libby cartoons at the Boston Globe, but Dan Wasserman’s cartoons are pretty good anyway.
did you see the link from TeddySF to Debbie Howells on Toensing? Near end of last thread.
That is a hilarious cartoon.
I sure hope they convict, it is hard to see how they could do otherwise, but it might be a good idea to reread Jeralyn’s cold water, just to understand how they might acquit.

I’m waiting for these comments of mine to show up on the WaPo website, after Deborah Howell’s outrageous self-congratulation. [ http://tinyurl.com/27p7kb ] What a brainless twit.
(: note that I wrote that without any parens or apostrophes, which the WaPo engine likes to strip :)
Was there a consensus about who’d play who in the movie? I’d like to nominate David Fincher as director if that’s OK.
Dayum. WaPo comment engine seems broken; I’ve posted that diatribe [above in #16] twice but no workie. Maybe they’re just blocking my IP; I was not kind to the original Toensing article, either… :) :)

And as far as it Not being Jury Tampering. It would not be jury tampering if it were not on the front page. Just because the jury was told to avoid the press, does not mean they can avoid being exposed to it — I try to avoid colds, but nevertheless I get exposed. TREASON – This word imports a betraying, treachery, or breach of allegiance.
The Constitution of the United States, Art. III, defines treason against the United States to consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid or comfort. This offence is punished with death. By the same article of the Constitution, no person shall be convicted of treason, unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.

yeah, and from Cheney’s hand written note, we know he’s the loyal soldier that
the Pres.was asked to do the dirty work to cover for other people’sclumsy leakingincompetence, and then they abandoned him by letting him take the fall instead of speaking up. Loyalty is a one way street with these people. The willingness of Americans to pretend that they don’t understand 9/11 was an inside job has allowed the Bush Administration to confiscate rights, out a CIA agent, Invade Afghanistan, invade Iraq, steal the 2004 election, and plan to invade Iran.

Haven’t seen Scooter, but Shooter keeps popping up all over in the news. I’m just wondering WTF is going on right now.
The trial pulled away the curtain but the main stream news seemed to have turned away. Is it fear? modesty? stupidity?
A huge internal power struggle is going on and no one is reporting on it. Condi makes nice with the Koreans and Dick and Bolton dis it. Publicly. Hey- what about supporting your own state dept?
Cheeny says all options are on the table for Iran but the UK Times is reporting that 4-5 generals will quit if Bush orders a strike on Iran.
I noticed that Chalabi is BAAAACK in Iraq. Score one for the Dick. But otherwise he seems to be on the outs with everyone.
Is there a Cheney vs the whole rest of the world story happening and no one is talking about it? Has the cat got everyone’s tongue?
If Scooter is found guilty, do you think there will be calls for Dick’s resignation?

the good part about no verdict is you can still bet on it. i lost money on the karl rove indictment. but that contract was simple. it was just odds. i forget what they were. but suppose it was 2:1. it meant if you put up 2 you could get back 3 if you won. or you could lose 2.
But these contracts are bid ask format. i think bid means what somebody is willing to buy and ask is what somebody is willing to sell. that’s the way options are. if somebody understands this stuff explain to me.

Because mentioning Cheney’s name at the beginning of every thread would be the equivalent of swearing. “Fitz” as an opening declaration is more like an affirmation.
chris –
I think you’re right. The Cheney/neocon revenge came while Condi was on her way to Jerusalem, to meet with the Abbas and the Israeli PM, the latter of whom got a call from Bush. The two of them agreed that the US/Israel would not let up on the Palestinian’s newly negotiated unity government as long as Hamas did not renounce violence or recognize Israel. That completely undercut Rice, who’s trilateral meeting accomplished little or nothing. One wonders whether Bush even knew how he was being used or how much it undercut his Sec. of State.
AZ Matt at 70 – “If you aren’t Hopi you are pahana. That in its simplest is equivalent to foreigner.”

I wonder if Fitz will alter his next indictment (assuming there is one) depending on the Libby trial outcome– So, for example, if Libby gets convicted on all 5 counts, Fitz goes for the max on the next indictment, but if not, will he scale back some of the counts of the next indictment?

Bob Schacht – any chance you are Anita’s brother?
PerryAnn — in my line of work as a consultant specializing in marketing competitive intelligence, I have to use media, no getting around it. But I also use more than one source and only those that haven’t burned me.
I got burned this week, unfortunately; I’m going to have to rethink my sources. Virtually the entire industry got two pieces of news wrong — but checking the translations of the original news sources from their native tongue revealed that the industry tech journals and mainstream media were very, very wrong.
I wish I had an answer, but I think the bottom line is that we have to do it ourselves. I did a more effective, more thorough job of covering the story for my research than an entire industry did — and I’m no Marcy Wheeler.
Tell you what — if you read something you don’t trust, you should just drop in here and ask for vetting and opinions. ;-)
S.O.S. in MA @17–great comment for Deborah Howell re: tomorrow’s column.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..01726.html
Deb is nothing if not consistent. As always, she has a tin ear for the truth, defends the indefensible, and completely misses the mark. I especially loved this line from her about the Plame case:
“It’s been a disaster for the media; journalists were forced to reveal anonymous sources, though most did so only after getting their sources’ permission.”
A “disaster for the media” not because they were played for fools, not because they became willing accomplices to a crime, not because they were exposed as more interested in shilling for their buddies in high places than in telling the public the truth….no, in Deb’s upside-down world it was a disaster for the media because they were forced to “out” the “sources” who had misused them and lied about what they said to them to begin with….
Fitz is legal shorthand for that outcome.

There’s a real gaffe sticking out in that–here the Libby boys staked the whole trial on attacking people’s memories, and they had an expert right there in town at GWU on note-taking, who could have testified that handwritten notes are unreliable. If Wells and Jeffress had concentrated on that, what might the end result have been…?
Rayne: That’s nice to hear. There’s definately a sea change happening in the Party, and the DLCers are becoming more and more irrelevant (finally!).
Saw some quotes from Obama’s speech in Austin, and they’re estimating 15,000 to 20,000 in the crowd. That’s just unheard of at this point! Almost every speech he has now, they have to change venues to accomodate the demand. Not sure he’s my candidate yet, but sure seems Hillary is getting, or soon to be getting passed by, which is symbolic of this new energy in my opinion. Have fun!

One can only hope. I say YES. And once he’s gone, Fitz and/or the Congress can go after the pReznit as having orchestrated the whole thing.
==> First count: carelessly “declassifying” and then “selectively leaking” the weakest parts of the NIE to buttress their false claim in the SotU. This may well have been illegal on its face, and the Nixon defense “If the President does it, that means it is not illegal” is the purest bullpuckey.
==> Second count: TREASONously outing a covert CIA agent for purely political purposes (silencing a brave whistleblower, her husband), thus intentionally terminating her career.
==> Third count: TREASONously exposing Brewster Jennings, both as a “death threat” against any in the Intel Community who might be contemplating going up against the administration on the war, and as a means of destroying the CIA’s eyes and ears on nuclear WMD in the middle east. This caused documented killings of Brewster Jennings operatives and contacts in foreign lands. Under cover of that death threat and that Intel blindness, the administration furthered their treasonous plans to lie the nation into an illegal war. It bears noting that that war has bankrupted the country, destroyed our diplomatic and moral authority in the world, not to mention killing thousands of Americans and Iraquis.
If Articles of Impeachment do not result from these High Crimes and Misdemeanors, I am not sure whether a future President directly ordering a nuclear strike on Chicago would draw charges from a future Congress, if indeed our Congress continues to exist. What do YOU think?
I liked the comment that someone made that there was a contrast between Libby’s obsessive note-taking and penchant for detail at the trial and his claim that he couldn’t pay attention to all the details.

Cheney also ought to be impeached for his role in orchestrating false intelligence re Iraq. It was Cheney who met with Chalabi and the other ex-patriate Iraquis. It was Cheney and Rummy who demanded intelligence to fit their plans. And I think Cheney had a hand in stovepiping false intelligence.
The Valerie Plame affair was a threat – a way to silence anyone who even thought about coming forward and whistleblowing. Cheney was willing to destroy anyone in the CIA any of their trusted contacts.
I think the “who sent Joe Wilson” noise was really a diversion to keep the press from asking “who forged the documents that purported to show Sadaam wanted to buy yellowcake”. And it seemed to work.
Cheney should resign. Congressfolk should be asking him to resign. And if he won’t. He ought to be impeached. I am willing to add my name to any petition requesting his resignation.
If our democracy survives this, we need to change how the OVP functions. No one should be running a parallel government in a democracy- and most certainly no one should be running an evil, clandestine parallel government in a democracy.

chris @ 71
hey chris –
first, while i hear you, and i do think
shooter looks to be out-of-step with just
about every other cabinet member, i DO think
that the fact that the old-guard, solid-
right-capitalists’-newspaper-of-record
is taking note is, well, pretty strong
evidence that mr. cheney’s days as v.p.
are numbered. [didja’ see friday’s wall
street journal?]
i posted something similar to the
below over in the most-recent libby trial
thread on talkleft.com, and at
my little corner of the world,
[shameless plug!]
but i do think the m.s.m. is slowly taking
its carefully-measured shot at this story.
it is clear that no one in the m.s.m. wants
to be “out in front” on it, should cheney pull
a now-improbable-frankenstein’s-monster-
reanimation-process out of his hip pocket,
but look at the journal’s latest:
in fact, yesterday, the wall street
journal began to acknowlege that even
if scooter is acquitted, this debacle
may end in sam-ervin-style hearings — with
the vice president of the united states
being called to explain himself. the senate
armed services committee has openly
asked for renewed hearings — and the
appearance of one scooter libby, at them:
quoth the wall street journal:
now, once the trial is over, either way — up
or down — scooter will have a-far-more-limited
fifth amendment privilege to assert, as a shield,
before congress. his fifth amendment rights
will arguably attach only to statements that
might constitute evidence of new crimes,
crimes for which he hasn’t yet been tried.
and that may prove very dicey for his old boss,
dick cheney — either scooter will be a convicted
felon (and likely working his way through the
appellate process — all while looking to cut deals
for favorable sentencing recommendations from the
the office of special counsel — patrick fitzgerald),
or he’ll be acquitted, and the special counsel
won’t be able to re-try him, under the one of the
other main protective provisions of the fifth
amendment, the “double jeopardy” clause. . .
either way, he could face contempt of congress
charges, and ultimately, jail, if he doesn’t
cooperate, at least as to unprivileged matters.
so, dick, if your people are reading this — do
the honorable thing, before your spiro agnew
moment arrives, front and center,
in the committee chambers of the
armed services committe of the united states senate. . .
more here. . .
My take on the long deliberations is that the jury has pretty much rejected the Memory Defense aspect.
If they believed that Libby “simply forgot” because people forget things…well that could have been resolved in a day at most. If there was a single holdout on that element they would have come back quickly and declared a mistrial on all counts.
Then they have asked for the flip chart, post-its and tape.
What that indicates is that they are now examining the interacting web of witnesses and how these mebellish and support the charges on each count.
It looks as if they are going thrown Fitz’s logic and will likely find it persuasive on all counts.
Remember that once the “Memory Defense” is rejected, Fitz only need to show that a single witness for each count has credibility. He only needs one “he said” to overwhelm Libby’s GJ statements.
Even worse, once they find Libby guilty on ONE count…they will view him as a liar and perjurer…and that will increase the valence of the testimony on those counts where other witnesesses may have had minor credibility issues. ONE certain lie and Libby will be viewed as a probable liar for the remaining counts. It will be a cascade.
