Just some random stuff:
* Doing the Libby trial, no matter what the outcome, has been a helluva lotta fun. I met some really interesting people, learned a lot and watched this little experiment we have going here grow and grow. How cool is that?* Steve Gilliard, our occasional guest writer and very good friend, is in the hospital. Please send healing thoughts his way, and head over to his site to leave a comment of well wishing. The early word is he should be out Wednesday.* I love this Donny Hathaway video. Hell, I love Donny Hathaway. Another brilliant talent too soon gone.* It's Spring Training time, and my two favorite Mets sites are Metsblog and Amazin' Avenue, the latter of which is one of Commander Markos' network of sportsblogs. I'm so well trained, I gave the link without direct orders from the Mighty Kos. I also wanted to talk up the Mets on behalf of my fellow Mets fan, Steve Gilliard, and for him, I have to add, "Fuck the fuckin' Yankees!" Take that, Amato.* Speaking of that Donny Hathaway song, you'll notice it's a religious song, though one that was very popular in the 1970's. I have not weighed in on all the fuss over the integration of the religious left into progressive politics going on elsewhere this week, but I do want to note that we've done a pretty good amount of working seamlessly to promote inclusion on all sides here at FDL. I do agree with Atrios, though: those who argue that the left is not welcoming to the religious left really need to start naming some names and quoting some statements directly if they want to be taken seriously. And, as our friend Steve Gilliard notes, all those people saying the left is hostile to people of faith are ignoring the entire African American community. What's up with that?* I'm really excited to have Phoenix Woman among our contributors, and equally excited about the pending inclusion of some other familiar commenting names among our front pagers. Can you guess who?* For those of you who may have missed it, Tommy Yum reports that his son Esten is heading back to school following his bout with leukemia. For those of you who don't know it, Tommy Yum was the co-writer of our election year special hit, Have You Had Enough?* Washington Postpublic relations hackombusdman Deb Howell justifies the decision to run Victoria Toensing's lies as the Libby case closes, amplifying the paper's editorial level decision to go all the way in the tank for Team Libby. Since Deb is so interested in offering "provocative" content in the Outlook section, I expect Jane Hamsher to be published there any Sunday now. Here's the difference: Toensing had her basic facts wrong and Jane will have hers dead on cold correct. (Hat tip to TeddySanFran.)
That's all I've got for now. What's cookin' with you tonight?
UPDATE: And in other news, we now have video of the only remaining New York City residents who remember the Giuliani administration fondly.

Booman does an amazing analysis of the disinformation campaign by the neocons…the last few paragraphs are terrific. How they systematically moved disinformation from place to person to place to person…
The talent at Firedoglake is amazing. I thank you all for an amazing month and good times to come.

Yep, and Pach’s post on the irresponsibility of the Toensing/WaPo hit piece was a nice complement to Larry Johnson’s critique.
Wow, great news about Esten! That’s just awesome to hear!
And Pach, let me just say…
LET’S GO METS!!!!
And I just put up video of “The $387,000 Question”, the new game show from the Connecticut For Lieberman party, on my blog.
Lastly, my Democratic Town Committee passed an anti-war resolution the other night. I just joined, so it was really cool having my first vote be for something like that!

Does Singapore have an extradition agreement? Maybe he heard rumours of a Fitz indictment, and is seaking asylum.
Alas, NZ news is reporting safe landing in Singapore and “all is fine.” Though, why I would bother to believe anything about the fellow is beyond me.
We were hiking along the Waikato River today, across from the pricey Huka Lodge, where Dick Cheney has been a happy visitor. Also frequented by Saudi princes. Had a few thoughts about what if he decided to stop in on this visit, but he’s totally out of our corner of the world now.

When I first moved out here, a friend told me that “winter” is an optional season. “If you want winter, you head up to the mountains, play in the white stuff, and then come home.”

I am getting too tired for words about this religion thing.
Current estimates are that 40% of US citizens are athiests. So why the fuck are all the politicians so obsessed with sucking up to the dogmatic idiots.
Isn’t it time they starting trying to suck up to those of us who don’t believe in the dogma of “organized religion” i.e. brainwashing of the unwashed.

Does anyone know why Jeralyn at Talkleft still has faith in Jason Leopold? I remember when the Karl Rove will be indicted, etc. stuff happened and she kind of defended him then and posted about her phone calls with him. She has a post up today that has quotes from Fitz by way of Leopold that sound so incriminating about Cheney. I really would like to believe that his quotes are accurate but I don’t remember them from Marcy’s posts.

Teresa @ 79
Theresa, IIRC, Jason Leopold / Truthout did not have press credentials but are purchasing the transcripts, in which case he may have stuff that Marcy’s flying fingers missed — Fitz was talking pretty fast at the summation by all accounts. Way back at the beginning, someone (LHP?) said that transcripts were available from court proceedings but usually took a while (a couple weeks?). She said that anyone could pay extra to have them done faster, though. She also said that once done they were public documents in the usual way. So, if he has actual transcripts then they should be available to anyone. I don’t know how to check, I don’t Lexis/Nexis.
Pach, If you are still here? Did your friend find work in Houston?
Watching the Cheney plane story evolve tonight; I wonder why John Howard felt the need to disclose anything? Especially now that the White House is calling Singapore a “scheduled refueling stop.” That doesn’t sound like a diversion.
Something’s up.
Refresh for an update to the main post.
I actually enjoy reading some of the comments on this site. Most are usually thoughtful and incisive.
HOWEVER, this thread was originally about Donny Hathaway. He made some important recordings, with and without Roberta Flack, before his apparent suicide.
My interest in this is as somebody who worked in a hotel in Hollywood with someone who had some very interesting connections in New York City and in Hollywood. After meeting her, I stopped making snap judgments about anyone in the entertainment field.
Just remember that if you were not personally involved with somebody, then you really don’t know ANYTHING.
Just sayin’
Thanks HotFlash. I guess I could click on Jeralyn’s link and see if it says. It really sounds bad for Cheney to me. Jeralyn also said the sealed vs. sealed indictments are not unusual but that she “suspects” it does concern the Fitz investigation and that it doesn’t involve Rove. I really hope she’s right.
Eureka Springs, AR @ 91

DeanOR @ 99
Where’s the reference to the religious left, as opposed to the right wing? The statement is ambiguous.
But the point is, you can always find one or another person, but the religious criticism is that, institutionally and politically, the party is somehow not welcoming to people of faith, but they never name names. It’s just one of those things “out there,” but it’s “out there” because the right wing has asserted t, not because it’s actually true.

London’s Sunday Times reports that “US generals ‘will quit’ if Bush orders Iran attack.” Excerpt: Tension in the Gulf region has raised fears that an attack on Iran is becoming increasingly likely before President George Bush leaves office. The Sunday Times has learnt that up to five generals and admirals are willing to resign rather than approve what they consider would be a reckless attack. “There are four or five generals and admirals we know of who would resign if Bush ordered an attack on Iran,” a source with close ties to British intelligence said. “There is simply no stomach for it in the Pentagon, and a lot of people question whether such an attack would be effective or even possible.”

Last stand of a broken tycoon

But it is not just the business world that changed around Black; so did the political world. He and his newspapers were arch-proponents of neo-conservatism. Amiel’s columns staunchly supporting Israel became notorious for their over-the-top right-wing sensibilities. His newspapers and magazines, through columnists such as Mark Steyn, were enthusiastic proponents of the invasion of Iraq. Black counted neo-con luminaries such as Richard Perle and David Frum - the White House speech writer who coined the phrase ‘Axis of Evil’ for George W Bush - as close personal friends. Yet now that neo-con establishment is also on the way out. Some of them, such as Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby, an aide to Vice-President Dick Cheney, have also found themselves in court. Ironically Chicago prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, the man prosecuting Libby on perjury charges relating to the leaking of the identity of an undercover CIA agent, is also leading the charge against Black. From business to politics, Black’s world view has crumbled around him and he has been left to face the music alone.

Our Fitz sure is a busy fellow.
On Cheney’s plane:
“There was an electrical problem involving a generator, but no safety issue,” said White House spokeswoman Emily Lawrimore. “The plane is fine.”
Cheney left Australia after a three-day visit to thank the government for contributing troops to Iraq and Afghanistan. He had earlier visited Japan and Guam.
He sure is Suzanne. If only we could clone our Fitz.
If no safety issues, why did AFII land in Singapore? These guys will spin nothing into a lie.

Eureka Springs, AR @ 116
Yup. John Howard said the plane was diverted; the WH says the Singapore stop was scheduled, for refueling.
Suzanne @ 118
Does anybody remember the story I linked to during the SpeakerAir fiasco, that Junja’s plane was in for long-term service at Andrews and so was the backup, so everybody had to bump down a plane, especially this week with Rice and Cheney traveling?
does that mean the cheney plane was originally the nancy plane until cheney took it for this trip, teddy?
Nobody is scheduled to get off the plane. Nobody is scheduled to get on the plane,” a source in Singapore, who declined to be identified, told Reuters.
A Reuters photographer at Sydney airport said Air Force 2 had proceeded towards the runway as normal and revved its engines before the engines appeared to decelerate.
A mobile stairway was sent out to the plane but a door in the plane opened and an unidentified figure appeared in the hatchway and waved the stairway off, the Reuters photographer said.
The door was then closed and the plane proceeded to the runway and took off.
Cheney arrived in Sydney late on Thursday. Anti-war protesters who accuse him of being one of the main architects of the unpopular Iraq war scuffled briefly with police on Thursday and Friday.
A total of 11 people were arrested but his visit was otherwise uneventful.
Cheney’s health has also been a concern in the past, with the vice president having a history of heart trouble.
http://www.khaleejtimes.com/Di.....n=theworld
So Jr is stranded in the WH? Cheney probably demanded that he be able to tour the world in order to avoid subpeonas. hehe

Eureka Springs, AR @ 116
While I don’t trust Shooter at all, if you are flying Sydney to DC you pretty much have to stop somewhere for fuel, and Singapore is the usual place. A 747-400 can get from SYD to SFO, but that’s about as far as it can go, depending on loads and wind. I doubt that it could go SYD to DC non-stop even under ideal conditions.

Robin Morgan: on her book “Fighting Back: a toolkit

fubar, over at needlenose, already has found the perfect image re the minor electrical problem on cheney’s plane.
There is a religious left. For those that doubt this, what do they think Jimmy Carter represented in America? How about the legacy of William Sloane Coffin (Rev Sloane), and the work of James Forbes, Jim Wallis, Michael Lerner, Joan Chissiter, Bill Moyers, et al. The left is abundant in religious folk. It is simply that they respect the Constitution and the separation of church and state. They respect the foundation of this country that does not promote one religious view forced on the entire population. It is the regligious left that seeks to empower the poor, care for the sick and accept sexual orientation without condemnation. They believe pro choice is simply that, CHOICE, without government interference. It is choice, not pro abortion. It is time we starting framing our issues ourselves instead of allowing them to be framed by the opposition.

Where does Jeralyn write about Sealed vs. Sealed?
Bob in HI
Bob in HI, I think HotFlash was right about Truthout maybe getting actual transcripts. At least I hope so. When I read Jeralyn’s link to them, it states the info came from transcripts. They seem pretty thorough to be made up but I get confused by much of what Jason says. I really hope he comes out right in the end. Jeralyn, at least, seems to somewhat believe in that site.
At least the reported quotes from Fitz are interesting.

You have no idea how much satisfaction I derive from Lord Black being dealt with by Fitzgerald. I have had my issues with the man going back decades for his attitudes, especially when he renounced his Canadian citizenship to become his Lordship several years back and was less than charitable (even by his already previously set low to negative public opinions of us in his media spokespieces) about his now former homeland. Then once he starts facing the possibility of real jail time in America he starts trying to regain Canadian citizenship because then with it he can do any time in our jails which are a bit less shall we say sketchy than the average America one thanks to treaties between our nations. Got to love the arrogance in that, but arrogance is not only Black’s middle name but first and last as well. He renounces six years back to become a Lord but when facing real legal consequences with jail time attached suddenly being Canadian again looks good because then he can serve any time in the jails of the country he has criticized for decades for its bleeding heart system and soft on criminals justice system.
I really hope Fitzgerald is able to convict him before Black’s application process can get through the system (barring help from the Harper CPC currently in minority power)) although it shouldn’t be too swift as there are a lot of people who will jump down the throat of any government caught giving this man a hand after his public renunciation and denouncement of this nation. If convicted that should prevent him from getting through the final gate, and I as one Canadian that happens to love his country do not want to have to give any comfort to someone that treats his citizenship in such a shabby manner (and his fellow citizens as well for that matter) and then comes trying to crawl back because he doesn’t want to do time in American jail. FAH!

Jason’s prediction has not come to fruition. That doesn’t mean that Rove hasn’t been (and/or won’t be) indicted, only that it hasn’t happened on the timetable he predicted.
The more I see and hear of the Libby trial, the more I become convinced that Rove and Cheney have something to hide.
Me too Wigwam. I think that Rove may have confessed himself out of trouble on one of his trips to the grand jury but I do believe that Cheney is in this up to his eyeballs. I really hope Fitz has the goods on him, but I’m not expecting it. I would love to be pleasantly surprised.
wigwam @ 142
I agree. No one has yet to see this ‘letter’ that Rover’s lawyer talked about. I think we may yet find out what’s up with Rover.
With all this talk of religion, did anyone see that James Cameron is holding a press conference in NYC Monday morning? It’s to discuss the documentary he and some fellow filmmakers made about the discovery that Jesus not only was not raised from the dead on the third day, but was buried in a tomb with his family, including his wife Mary Magdalene and their son Judah. Follow that link, we have some interesting times ahead of us on the third rock.
I think I’m going to start calling Cheney ‘Spiro’ in hopes that the mojo will rub off on him.
“Vice President refuels in Singapore on way home; problem called minor”
heh
“plane fine”
here
Alicia @ 146
But Spiro didn’t make noise when the breathed.
I’m just keeping an open mind on Leopold but I always look for verification before I link or quote him. He could very well have been accurate or he could have been set up to be painted inaccurate because he was getting too close or he could have been totally wrong.
I have faith the truth of S vs S will eventually come out - perhaps the same day as the (hopefully) Libby conviction will include the unsealing of that particular piece of info. That is, of course, assuming it is related to Fitz’ investigation.
Would be my dream if it turned out to be US vs Cheney. That would make the idea of Rove flipping to save his own skin somewhat palatable.
Darth Cheney suits him much better.
aliasofwestgate @ 150
Oh, I don’t disagree with that. That’s how I think of him, too.
But I would love some of that ‘get-the-hell-out-of-the-Vice-Presidency-now’ juice to get all over him.
I always think of vp’s name the way the character Maryann (Christine Baranski)from the 80’s tv show Cybil referred to her exhusband. Doctor (pause) Dick with the Dick sounding almost as if she was spitting the word out.
Surprisingly on topic. I really wanted to save this for the morning thread, but alas I doubt if I’ll be awake in time. So here’s a cuppa for the early pups…

Thanks for the tip. The “comments” to Jeralyn’s article are well worth reading. In fact, I think her article ought to be featured on the left or right sidebar of FDL; it really belongs here, anyway.
Thanks,
Bob in HI
That’s it for me tonight, folks. G’nite all.

Rove undoubtedly knows a LOT about the WHIG (White House Iraq Group) and what it was doing. It was mainly Cheney’s gig, IIRC. I suspect that the deal Fitzgerald cut with Rove is that if Cheney is indicted, Rove will testify against him in certain specific matters that were revealed in Rove’s numerous GJ appearances. As long as Rove sings like a bird when the time comes, Fitz won’t indict him.
I suspect that one of the reasons Republicans did so poorly last November is that Rove was so busy behind closed doors covering his a** that he wasn’t much use in the election.

I checked Jason’s quotes against the transcript and they were correct. I added a few more quotes in my post.
Anyone can get the transcripts by ordering them from exemplaris. They are expensive, however.
Sealed v. Sealed is 1:06 CR 00128. As of today, it is still sealed. I don’t think it’s Rove, but I do suspect, due to its timing, that it is related to this case.
On the other hand, it could be just a run of the mill indictment where the defendant is a fugitive.

Very interesting. At first glance, I would say that Christians would react by saying that this was an elaborate set up by those who were trying in those times to discredit the resurrection, which according to my understanding of fractal geometry, is more likely to have happened than not. I really wouldn’t have put it past Jesus considering the way he reportedly imploded his DNA at Gethsemene.
The Aquarian Gospel talks about his travels through India and Tibet among other places. This was apparently verified in the travels of Maria Montessori as chronicled in “The Lost Years of Jesus.”
I might add there are many people who believe the story that either or both Marys traveled with Joseph of Aremethea to either France or England and lived among the Druids and such.
Either way I hope it doesn’t put folks off from their search for our Eternal Nature, which will be located shortly.

Hear, hear
Subway and Fini,
Home from the last night of a concert series. The spit valve on my tuba broke off right before I was supposed to come in cold on a piece playing a quadruple ledger line LOW E-flat pianissimo. Got a finger over the spit hole in time.
Can’t wait to see Cameron’s documentary. I read the _Aquarian Gospel…_ back in the late 60s and Maria Montessori’s book in the late 80s. Montessori’s book reminds me of a story a Buddhist monk told me long ago. He was traveling in the Himalayas in the early 60s, near Mt. Kailas, and came across a starving monk praying fervently. The trekking monk thought there was something oddly familiar about the starving monk. He asked the poor fellow if there was any way he could help. “No,” said the emaciated penitant, “I am only here until the end of this life. I’m am seeking to find a path I lost long, long ago.”
Reluctantly, the travelling monk resumed his journey, leaving the oither monk behind. He kept on juggling through his mind why he thought the sickly fellow to be familiar. After a few miles, it hit him like a bolt of lightning. The starving monk was Ad*lf H*tler.
What’s up with me?
Well, after a weekend spent stuck within the new and (notso)improved Canuckistani Whirlitzer I decided that….
Saturday Night’s Alright For Prosetylizin’!
(And yes, I for one, have noted how inclusion has broken out all over the place at FDL).
Ed*ard Teller
I’d heard that one, and reading it reminded me of the old line that Dick Clark, in his previous life was Dick Clark.
I really loved The AG by Levi. “There is a Silence where the Soul may meet it’s God…”
Heavy man. I thought the monk story would end that the monk tramped on and on and on, until he sat down thinking about just where he was going, when a young monk approached him, asking him if he needed help…
Subway,
Where did you get the name Teller Creations for your music publishing business?
BTW, the throbbing mandala at your site could go very well with some brass instrument music. I’m serious.
WRT Donny Hathaway, I remember reading a bit years ago about Willie Weeks, who played bass for him at some point. Apparently the big stand-out moment was a solo on “Everything is Everything” performed live in Japan which made it on record.
If I remember the story correctly people in Japan (and elsewhere) forever afterward would find out who he was and say “ah, Willie Weeks, Donny Hathaway, `Everything is Everything’.” I can’t believe I haven’t bought that album yet.
Here’s a page with Willie talking about it.
Sorry for the mini-obsession. It’s a bass player thing. :-)
Ed*ard Teller@165
Actually Tellercreations came about because of a concept toy we invented in the 80’s called UBU and the name was transferred to our web domain.
I took my wife’s maiden name (Teller) when we were married. My personal stuff is published under “Full Snuggle Music.”
The animation (by Dan Winter, inventor of The Box of Miracles) is laid out in PHI ratios and seems to follow just about any piece of music I’ve played to it.
Kinda like the portrait with the eyes that seem follow you around the room.
MarkusB @ 166
Loved Weeks’ work on But Seriously, Folks, by Joe Walsh…One of the great albums of the 70’s, IMO.
I was breezing right along through his piece in TNR and then Marty Peretz called Jane Fonda a “Pathalogical Extremist.” WTF?
And I thought I had Vacation Deficit Disorder…

Oh, cool. Something else for me to check out. I don’t seem to know anything on that album except the obvious track.
Pach! Just to let you know. I never go back and read your post on Fitz. I dont have to go back. I printed, and framed it.
It cheers my heart each time I read it.
there is hope for America the beautiful.
Great work. Thank you.
Marion…..what’s in that coffee? Everything looks funny.
Good morning, retirin’. The coffee’s fine, you may be seeing the steam? (Sometimes if I really need to clean my glasses things look funny…) I’ve got my big mug of tea, and a friend came over yesterday and made up a “breakfast casserole” that just came out of the oven. Eggs, ham and shredded cheese, over bread cubes, put in the fridge overnight so everything melds together. Bake it up and it’s light and fluffy and yummy. Help yourself.
Sorry to say Bobo is having some sort of fit in the NYT this morning, about “Hipster” parents. Now there’s a word I haven’t heard since, oh, 23 Skidoo? But there’s also Nicholas Kristof and Frank Rich.
http://mgpaquin.blogspot.com/
Have a splendid day.
It’s not my glasses. It’s one of those tubes kinda thingies where a poster last night didn’t close something. I’m seeing Roman font with every line in a gray box. Or is this the onset of some kind of dementia?
My screen looks fine. Have you mashed F5?
Several times to no avail.
Peculiar. I suppose if all else fails you could try a reboot, but that seems extreme. Maybe when one of the mods/techie gurus crawls out of bed they’ll have a solution for you. I’m the master of F5, but that’s the extent of my problem solving ability in this situation! However, rest assured it’s not creeping dementia… The inward toobz sometimes have gremlins playing in them.
Mornin’ all!
Bad “window”. Opened up a new one and all is well. Now that I can see, glasses could stand a good cleaning, as you suggested earlier.
Glad all is well, retirin’. I keep a fly swatter around to use on gremlins. I don’t know if it really does any good chasing them off, but it makes me feel better!
Good morning, Marion and Retirin’and twolf1
Good news. Our weather’s giving us an ice storm followed by accumulating snow today and tonight. That means “Snow/Ice Day” tomorrow, don’t have to make THE COMMUTE, can wait for the verdict here on FDL.
retirin’ in five @ 183
…the bad news is that the same storm (or one just like it) could shut down D.C on Monday.
“…..storm could shut down D.C.” Bummer. “No one could have anticipated a volatile front of such mag…..”
Why does the storm hate America?
I blame Clinton.
FEMA goes after aid to students.
Mornin’.
Lindy @ 188
I just read yr link.
Funny, I suspect there are some FEMA beneficiaries who won’t be asked for excess money back.
retirin’ in five @ 185
Not much blowing thru here, jusr a little icy driving this a.m. [Sunday]
I believe court will be open.
Could be a different kind of storm brewing if the guilty verdicts get handed down, tho.
Morning, egregious. I agree.
Lindy @ 192
Does that make you agreegious?
Ya know, FEMA is only in part about true emergency management. It’s primary purpose is to hand out money to politically connected people after an emergency. It’s as good an excuse as any.
“No one could have anticipated the payees would cash and spend the checks.” Bushco has ruined this country.
agreegious *snort* And yes…I wonder how much it cost to fix that front porched house on the beach in Mississippi where W plans to sit in the rocking chairs…and who paid for it.
Jeralyn Merritt @ 158
IIRC, there were several other SvS case in that court about that same time. Are the rest of them still sealed?
It would be ironic if Jason’s article turned out to be the final straw that got Rove to flip.
boy, you guys are awful funny for 530 in the morning!
I got coffee, anyone?

just getting to this. let me commend to you a few other mets blogs.

me too! Warning, my cup is very large.
Geek alert.
This morning I’m memorizing the states, in alphabetical order, and the Canadian provinces, in geographical order.
Trying to keep the brain sharp.
This is from writing down the various places where I get visitors for egrblog. Got a lot of foreign countries as well. It’s a big world out there, and really fun to watch it become interconnected.
Delurking for the first time since Fitz handed out the indictments to say:
Many thanks to Pach & MarkusB for the Donny Hathaway and Willie Weeks stuff. The “Live” album is one of the treasures of my collection. Too bad there doesn’t seem to be any video of that session available!
The usual kudos to Jane, Reddhead( I know that’s “old school”) and emptywheel for the liveblog of the trial. Taking time away from loved ones for our sake speaks volumes about your commitment to Truth, Justice and the American way. (Has that been used already?)
retirin’ in five @ 177
Try this:
While holding down Ctrl and Shift simultaneously–keep them down!–bring your mouse pointer up to the reload button on your browser (the two green arrows making yingyang to the left of the house in Internet Explorer) and click that.
That forces a true refresh.
Thank you Jeralyn for your confirmation of the transcripts. I so hope you are right.

Well, when I adopted a rescue dog [18 months or so ago], I was going to name him “Scooter,” but had to decline that when the Libby stuff came forward. I named him “Jack,” and then the Abramoff stuff hit. Maybe I should just name him “Shooter” and hope for a similar legal fate for this “namesake.”
Naw, can’t do that. Jack it is.
