“The wife” had to be discussed because he had to show there was a reason for Libby to lie and fear of losing his job, fear of going to jail for outing Plame, fear of losing one for his team were all motivations for lying.

His dismissal, in part, of Russert’s importance was fantastic. The case doesn’t rest on one person’s testimony.

It appears this was a great day for Fitz and America.

[…] In his closing argument today, Patrick Fitzgerald addressed a point that I’d wondered about. I hope his explanation wasn’t lost on the jury. I didn’t get it the first time through myself. If you listen to Libby’s story as he told it, it’s absolutely absurd. The defense actually alluded to that in their presentation, claiming that it was just bad memory in the face of a busy schedule rather than some kind of complex lie – implying I guess that if he were lying, he’d have done a lot better job of making up a story. Patrick Fitzgerald gave a reasonable scenerio to explain why Libby made up the story that he’d heard about Valerie Plame from Cheney on June 12, 2003 but promptly forgot it until he was supposedly reminded on July 10, 2003 by Russert – a reminder that Russert completely denies: He picked someone high up in NBC. The beautiful thing about this liveblog transcript is that you KNOW Barbara Comstock is on the phone with Big Time as soon as Walton adjourned today, telling him that Fitz is coming gunning. So tomorrow, expect NBC to run all kinds of bullshit hit pieces. Expect some other dumb has-been celeb to shave his/her head. Expect massive disruptions in public utility services.

Expect the Iran attack orders to come in the dead of night.

The beautiful thing is that now, when these distractions all come at a time convenient for the administration, it’s much easier to trace the lines of cause and effect to understand WHY.
