for the week ending 2/17/07:
"… And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife [Ed. note: chain-smoking Stepford or otherwise]
And you may ask yourself, 'well…how did I get here?'"
- Talking Heads, "Once in a Lifetime"
Q Do you believe it's a civil war, sir?
THE PRESIDENT: I can only tell you what people on the ground, whose judgment – it's hard for me, living in this beautiful White House, to give you an assessment, firsthand assessment. I haven't been there; you have, I haven't.
– G. W. Bush, 2/14/07
Some reporters sitting in the front rows swore they heard the President then mutter: "My god, what have I done?"
Now do you believe me? You know, if it happens once or twice, you can always wave off the verbal faux pas as amusing slips of the tongue. But when it happens at every friggin' press conference, that's a pretty good sign that neurons are misfiring and synapses are too atrophied to make even the weakest connection. In other words: trouble in River City, baybay.
It's time for the American people to face up to the fact: The man has cannonballed into the deep end of an empty pool. He has tripped over the light fantastic. He has hit the seat ejector button while the plane's still in the hangar. He has refused to deploy his main canopy.
And he also seems to be channeling his scary evil battleaxe of a mother. It's true — the fruit of the poisonous tree doesn't fall particularly far. How can we ever forget this little gem?
"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? Oh, I mean, it's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"
– Barbara Bush, Sr., 3/18/03
What part of Bar Bush's excellent adventures on "Good Morning America" and in the Houston Astrodome didn't 43's handlers learn? Hay-zoos, the stupid, it BURRRRNS!!
And before I forget, Happy Lunar New Year! It's the Year of the Pig. Nooo, not Limbaugh.

Leave the gun. Take the peace on earth.
Fredo and Company are taking a piss on the earth.
What, no link to Victoria Toensing’s WaPo satire? I was sure you would label it, and the accompanying 29 pages of commnents, as meta-snark. It can’t be real.

TSF, I can’t do that to myself, let alone others.
HTML Mencken, LOL !
watertiger, I love this more than I can say. This description meshes to perfection with my opinion of Bush, except with humor.
Good God, a link to Eli. I am undone.

LMAO, but I thought it was grossly unfair to battleaxe’s around the world.
I have to give a shout out to my blog’s own DeDurkheim for discovering the Paul Stanley’s which I understand to be the greatest satire ever for KISS army members.
For the rest of us, not so much.
Watertiger, I think I luuuuuvvvvv you (even if we are different species)!

I stopped doing that. At least one commenter complained that I was honoring Karl Rove (I didn’t intend it that way) and it was removed once by one of the hall monitors. Anyway, I took a hint and just stopped.

I wouldn’t know.
This Old Brit, fwiw, and this is total speculation on my part, these stories are to cushion the blow from incursions from the air, stealth bombing. Iranians have Russian and Chinese made air defenses. All sides want to see who has the better technology and what better place to test it. Stories like these imo, are designed to get the US and Europe to breathe a huge sigh of relief when it’s “just a stealth attack with conventional weapons.”
Given the US political climate, I can’t see how introducing ground forces into Iran is in any way possible. Air power is where we have the greatest advantages, supposedly.

I like how the Iranians are blaming the US for a terrorist bombing in Iran now.
Not that you see a lot of coverage of this on the networks.
There could not be a more stupid move than a military strike against Iran right now.
Naturally, that is not at all a comfort with Bush/Cheney in charge.

My only ridiculous hairpiece is on my back!
Where is the source for his muttering “my god what have i done”? Is this a joke or did he really say this?
Is there somewhere online where these reporters admit he said this? I sure didn’t hear him say this while listening to the presser on the radio.
Anyone got a link? Link to the video of it?

Per your comment, I agree and I have no doubt that we have deployed special forces into Iran at numerous times. Ultimately, it probably has to do with how much the Saudi royal family can pressure Cheney. IMHO, the Saudi royal family are watching each other and the Shia minority who work the Saudi oil fields. I suspect punching Iran in the mouth with an air strike, is about keeping the Shia in Saudi Arabia “in line.” I should have been more specific in my coments, I hope even Cluster*uck has figured out that we have difficulty
occupying“holding” ground in the Middle East, after we “conqueor” it because we “win” whereever we go. It’s so much easier to declare victory after we blow something up, “mission accomplished.”Occasionally, I see the answer of our quest. It arrives on the tip of my tongue. Just before I am able to share this universal and humongous truth in the form of a simple sentence, I get hungry.

Mad Dogs.. Yes, I can connect easily to all others. Just FDL. And it took over 10 minutes to submit comment just now. It’s really strange. I’ll see how long it takes this comment to go. Also, there is no ‘refresh comments’ button showing up and like others are noting, I’m seeing the wide screen thing.
The wide screen thing is a result of too many “quoted comments” — that’s not just your computer.
Try clearing your cache. For some reason, that’s the equivalent of hitting the TV to get the reception back (in the days before cable).
Watertiger @ 88
That’s part of why he’s been able to get away with so much, I think. People sensed that something is wrong with him that he can’t help, so they felt attacking him was wrong and mean and so on.
(I use past tense because people don’t feel that way anymore. They just want him gone.)
If something’s wrong, step down already.
Margot,
I think his inarticulateness played into the whole “have a beer with” meme. He was one of the masses, and he emphasized his “yokel, I’m just one of you” character with these missteps and malapropisms.
Margot @ 92
What’s wrong with him is nothing new – it’s the same thing that’s always been wrong with him. No new reason for him to step down – just the same old/same old.
Margot @ 92
I keep thinking of the great quote by Kung Fu Monkey:

ohioblue @ 103
Yes, they would both qualify quite handily, but it doesn’t have to be them specifically. Unfortunately, other than Gore, I think the only Democratic hopeful who would really qualify would be Clark, and I don’t think his chances are all that great.

Eli at 105 – I liked Clark in 2004. The rap against him was that he was a terrible campaigner, but I don’t know the specifics.

They’ve destroyed treaties, laws, why not the calendar?
Egregious – Actually when I think about it, I’d give them the calendar if they’d just give back the Constitution.

Oklahoma kiddo @ 111
Oh, I do. No more of this “well, he’s not too bright, but he’s surrounded by smart people” thing. It doesn’t work.
February 30—sounds like a good title for a post that shows how far around the bend he is.
OK Kiddo – I think it would be alot easier to get a smart prez than one who is totally truthful. Sad, but true. If you’re a 100% truthteller I don’t think you can be a politician.

He made at least one gaffe that I thought was pretty awful, although I can no longer remember what it was. I think 2004 was Clark’s best opportunity, for two reasons:
1) It’s a lot harder to attack a former Supreme Commander Of NATO for being soft on national defense in a time of war.
2) I would have loved to see a campaign between Bush and the kind of man that Bush *pretends* to be. Yes, Kerry was a war hero, but he never looked the part the way that Clark does, plus he had the anti-Vietnam baggage that Rove used to win over the stabbed-in-the-back crowd.
ohioblue @ 116
Perhaps Former President Carter comes to mind?
Terry Olson at 116 – Someone here the other day said the reason Bush keeps comparing himself to Truman is because Truman is the only US president to use atomic weapons.
Terrifying, isn’t it? I think Bush is just itching to try out some tactical nukes.

Mr Carter is the last good politician of the old world. The one before this idiocy we call powermongering took over again and never left. *sighs* I hate the fact that he’s been so marginalised and mocked. He’s done the most to make a difference in things, and it falls to nothing because of the greedy gits in charge all over the place.
He sees the world for what it is. That’s a rare thing to be able to stand up and say over here. His old title gives him a chance to say so publically, with a huge platform. Thank the gods for the ‘net, so we can do so for ourselves now.

plucked from a comment thread at Atrios
Buzzflash. They are selling a magnetic sticker with this legend on it:
At least Bush had a plan for getting out of Vietnam.
KNOW YOUR ENEMY!!!
For anyone to ‘misunderestimate’ George W. Bush is to commit the most gravest of fatal errors.
It is just too easy to catch each of GWB’s verbal gaffe as his every word is recorded and endlessly parsed over however, the problem is that the left and websites like this have been lulled over the past six years into believing that this man is somewhat of a dullard.
This is exactly the image that BushCo. culls, grooms, promotes and targets you all as buying into. Folksy gaffes by the way that GWB and friends within his base laugh at and could give two bits less if you all stew over them or not. Plus, they fully understand that it wastes valuable time/energy for the those in the opposition to concentrate on this type of non-issue.
One truth is for certain as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow… GWB definitely is not stupid as is proven by his ability to front as bagman in carrying out with relative ease/ unchallenged the neocon agenda he has been charged with. Tax cuts for the wealthy, establishing corporate hegemony with astronomical profits/margins, global warfare in Afghanistan, Iraq and soon to be Iran, unprecedented war profiteering/ treasury thievery, ease with which he has silenced dissidents, trashing the US Constitution… just to name a few of his numerous wildly successful programs.
As GWB has moved his highly organized/ meticulously planned agenda forward unabated and at breakneck speed you all have wasted time arguing about his perceived lack of mental capacity.
In reality when you look at the events of the last six years and what this man has accomplished who really is the stupid one GWB or you all?
sociopaths aren’t stupid.
“Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? Oh, I mean, it’s not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?”
I couldn’t agree more. It’s a beautiful world we live in, a sweet romantic place. It’s a wonderful time to be here. Nice to be alive!
Is creationism the opposite of evolution? The term devolution is sometimes erroneously used to refer to the evolution of a species into more primitive forms such as Barbara.
- Tom
Highly organized meticulous plan…that’s revisonist history. Like Rudolph Ghouiliani before 9/11 changed everything Bush was on his way to the dumper. Then everything changed and he got a free ride. But that’s over now. He got where heis by using the phrase “we are at war” as a club. And has had a free ride from the media who everyday wipe the slate clean for him He has a record of total failure in Iraq and yet the media based on nothing more then Bush claims the surge is working when there is factual evidence it is not.
Fool me twice – Cheney on you
Looks like Guiliani is not what he seems either. Grateful to the FDL poster the other day who linked to Guiliani’s anthrax clean-up business – not a joke and connected it with the death of the National Enquier reporter who was murdered with the miltary grade anthrax for printing photos of the bush daughters drunk and rolling on the floor and who has been speculated as having Victor Ashe and Bush in the coffin together at Yale photos. the guiliani cleanup crew destroyed the archives.
