C & M is one of my favorite movies of all time. It mixes comedy and tragedy so well, and is incredibly nuanced. Allen is such a grab bag — there are some fun metaphysical comedies, some overly serious art pieces, and a lot of divertiing ensemble pieces. And then there is C & M, which is simply sublime.

It is undoubtedly Martin Landau’s best performance. Also Alan Alda’s.

Just after the clip here, the Allen character is talking to the woman he is in love with about being fired. “You would think that nobody was compared to Mussolini before.”

There is a good line by the Landau character who is a highly respectable member of society who has decided to have his mistress killed.

“God is a luxury that I can’t afford.”

There are so many good lines in this film. This is a deep and entertaining film.

They even make use of a “Fun Meter” that the US military has apparently co-opted from some Bay Area cyclists. I’ve seen those Fun Meters at Burning Man myself in the 1990’s, long before the Department of Defense stole them to make a mockery of killing civilians in Iraq and elsewhere.

But the question that they should have asked was:

“Mr. President, what do you think would be worse, for you to know who leaked or that you didn’t know, and were not able to find out in like 15 seconds?”

Repeat the question to just about anything the President says.

“What’s worse: knowing the evidence for WMD was flawed, or not knowing.”

This should be the new standard.

I know that there are so many things that need to be fixed after six years of BushCo, but I think it’s beyond clear the MEDIA REFORM needs to be front and center.

AZ state Repugs are at it again… Proposed bill would ban political opinions in classes

PHOENIX (AP) — A proposed state law would prohibit any instructor in a public school or college from advocating or opposing a political candidate or one side of a social, political or cultural issue that is part of a partisan debate.

A group of Arizona lawmakers concluded Thursday that classrooms should not be forums for schoolteachers and college professors to espouse political opinions.

So….. you are an ASU student working at a Political Science major and YOU CAN’T talk about political opinions??

When you think it can’t get any worse in this state, then this stuff comes out of our Repug lead Legislature!

The separation of politics and state are enshrined in the COnstituttion. Or something.

Has anyone out there (either MSM or blogosphere) really gone after the Prez’s line about “Which is worse, that they knew about it or that they didn’t know about it?” Anyone in the press going to apply that same logic/question to any of a bazillion cases in Bush admin history? Plame leak? 9-11 readiness? WMD intelligence? Katrina? That was the line that most shocked me. And he smirked and laughed through that, too.

I’m not sure if anyone has written much about that line in the presser, but it shocked me, too. I thought, “WTF – is he saying that he doesn’t care and it shoudn’t matter if a government (Iran) is directing weapons into a warzone against us or not – they can blame the government and use it as justification to fight them?”

By the way, why is it that Bush won’t treat his failures in Iraq and Afghanistan like he did with his failures before/during/after Katrina hit? (Make a purty speech, then walk away and don’t mention it again) If he did that in the middle east, it would at least save some American lives.

Yeah, got friends in Baton Rouge/NOLA area who find Georgie Bush almost as funny as the WH press corps does. What a comedian! Fill a news conference w/them & see GW try to work a really tough crowd…

You know, the one thing I keep wondering about is if any repercussions came down on that kid that interrupted Cheney on CNN live who was clearly heard saying “Go fuck yourself Mr. Cheney.” I hope he and his family turned out ok.
