When those reporters were stonewalled about something they considered important, they got angry. Now let's look at Bush's press conference yesterday:
QUESTION: Thank you, Mr. President. Sir, we've now learned through sworn testimony that at least three members of your administration, other than Scooter Libby, leaked Valerie Plame's identity to the media. None of these three is known to be under investigation. Without commenting on the Libby trial, then, can you tell us whether you authorized any of these three to do that, or were they authorized without your permission?
THE PRESIDENT: Yes, thanks, Pete. I'm not going to talk about any of it.
QUESTION: They're not under investigation, though?
THE PRESIDENT: Peter, I'm not going to talk about any of it.
QUESTION: How about pardons, sir? Many people are asking whether you might pardon –
THE PRESIDENT: Not going to talk about it, Peter. (Laughter.) Would you like to think of another question? Being the kind man that I am, I will recycle you. (Laughter.)
John.
QUESTION: Thank you –
THE PRESIDENT: You like that one? "Recycling" him. (Laughter.)
QUESTION: That took care of one of my questions, as well, sir.
THE PRESIDENT: If that's the case, sit down. Next question. (Laughter.)
Look, the questions from the Post's Peter Baker were good, and the comparison is far from perfect, because in the first instance a campaign official was being questioned, and in the second the target was the President. What's more, the advent of the Internet and YouTube means reporters' performances at press conferences are far more public and more scrutinized than they used to be — which probably means it's inevitable that reporters will be more careful and less confrontational. This isn't reflexive White House press corps criticism.

Fitz!
That presser exchange was ridiculous and embarassing…again.
look…all i want is for one of these so-called “reporters” to say the following: “Mr. Bush, with all due respect, that answer is NOT acceptable to either the questioner or the AMERICAN PEOPLE
They are all Jeff Gannons, to a one, except for Helen Thomas. It recalls the joke whose punchline goes, “we’ve already established what you are, now we’re just bargaining over price.” Guckert/Gannon’s downfall was simply being so overt about it.
Pach! That will be teh funny.

Indeed. I have little dents in my forehead from where I banged on the keyboard.
The presser is another example of why Republicans have forfeited their right to criticize future Presidents by remaining silent when Bush pulls stunts like this.
“Please whip me again, Mr. Cheney. I am a not a real journalist, I just play one on TV. Please intimidate me. Please manipulate me. Use me in any way you can. I serve only you, my master. Please, Mr. Cheney, embarrass and humiliate me. I promise to keep it all off the record!”

Even AFTER the Libby verdict is rendered, he’ll STILL say “can’t comment on an ongoing investigation” if he says anything beyond “not gonna talk about it.” Just watch.

I sure Rich Little will be about as pointed as Henny Youngman (I just flew in from Vegas and boy are my arms tired). The press have become absolute eunuchs. The movie “Good Night and Good Luck” was such a reminder of what real journalism used to be. (Sigh)
I can almost smell the ink drying on a Libby pardon now.
Yeah, got friends in Baton Rouge/NOLA area who find Georgie Bush almost as funny as the WH press corps does. What a comedian! Fill a news conference w/them & see GW try to work a really tough crowd…
They couldn’t be less confrontational if you filled the room with catatonic patients. I do somewhat understand that they fear for their jobs if they push too hard, but to just sit there is inexcusable.
you know something?
rich little is a has been right now, if he wanted to revitalize his carrer all he would have to do is a colbert on Bush
instant revitalized career
if the shootet doesn’t get him that is
Speaking of comedy — Malkin will be guest hosting for O’Reilly this evening. Too funny…but not in the way that either of them intends, I’m certain.
Marie Roget @ 12
You know, the one thing I keep wondering about is if any repercussions came down on that kid that interrupted Cheney on CNN live who was clearly heard saying “Go fuck yourself Mr. Cheney.” I hope he and his family turned out ok.
And don’t forget this gem from March 24, 2004:

A barrel of laughs, I tell you.

Yes, indeed. Comedy gold. Oh, those kids!

Its beyond inexcusable its treasonous. I want to throttle each and every one of them.
By the way, have you been to the new Blue Indiana site yet?

I so hope she’ll do a segment about ANCHOR BABIES.
I’m just sayin’. ‘Cause I LOVES ME some hypocritical Marcos-lovin’ BIGOTRY to go with my FOX news.
(PS Christy you were great on Sam this morning. Can’t wait for Peter B.)
Part of me feels like the obsequious press has become constitutionally so independent of who is in power, but part of me wonders to what extent a years long winter spell has yet to be broken. TRex’s image on late nite with the wicked witch reminds me of the loyal castle guards who suddenly became normal after the spell broke when the witch melted away.
I wonder to what extent the spell remains intact as long as Karl Rove continues to hold sway. If Karl were to get indicted or forced to resign his position on WH staff, what kind of thaw might be set in motion?
Which also leads me to ponder, if I place benevolent faith in Patrick Fitzgerald and he comes through, would that make me a friend of Dorothy?
Raph Levien @ 17
that vid should be put up on this board the very next time we know we’re gonna get tons of traffic…
the person that made that skit is one sick man and the public doesn’t know it yet
I didn’t think reporters were allowed to ask about Libby in the first place. Maybe there was a signing statement about it or something. Only FDL and “The Daily Show” appear to be paying any attention to the story.
In Nixon’s time, this kind of behavior was called “stonewalling”. What are we calling it these days.
Bit OT, but here’s a link to pics from 2006/7 Baton Rouge Mardi Gras crewes & parades. Nothing can keep these folks down, even the flat foot of Federal government inaction. They’ve got each other:

Unaccountability, treason, incompetence, lying,etc. etc.

This is her big day, starting with Kurtz’s column and ending with PapaBear. They must really want her to shine after her admirers’ “victory” over the Edwards campaign bloggers.
C&L has this little gem of Pres. Limbaugh & V-Pres. Coulter. From the limp show coming on Faux:

Truly unbelievable. How about Colmes afterward with the fake chuckle? I wonder if they told him, “Just smile and nod, or you’re fired, Alan.” He does manage to get in this: “It’s interesting, that’s Rosemary on the intercom. That wouldn’t be Rosemary Woods, would it?” Hannity’s clueless. Now that’s funny.
Most americans who actually watched the prez pressers this week were running for the pepto bottle. As bad the press is treated, most still laugh on cue for him. I wonder if they know how much contempt & disgust so many americans feel toward them.
Fiyero @ 29
I suspect the show’s writers were too stupid to make the connection on Rosemary.

Listen to the Glenn Greenwald audio and then try and reconcilable the TeeVee Colmes to the radio Colmes.
http://www.crooksandliars.com/…..k-gaffney/
Has anyone out there (either MSM or blogosphere) really gone after the Prez’s line about “Which is worse, that they knew about it or that they didn’t know about it?” Anyone in the press going to apply that same logic/question to any of a bazillion cases in Bush admin history? Plame leak? 9-11 readiness? WMD intelligence? Katrina? That was the line that most shocked me. And he smirked and laughed through that, too.
I am so sick of the Bush’s.
The former Florida governor has said repeatedly he won’t be a candidate in 2008 despite encouragement from his father, the former president, and his brother, the current one. But Jeb Bush’s support, even tacit, would be critical in the state that decided the 2000 presidential election.

Listening to it now. I had read his crap yesterday, what a fool.
Katymine @ 32:
Yeah, I was noticing that difference myself again as I listened to the Greenwald clips this morning. How does the radio show work? (In terms of Colmes’ autonomy/ corporate ownership / syndication, etc…) He’s obviously got more punch when he doesn’t have to kow-tow to his masters at FNC.
Here’s some really funny jokes … errrm, maybe not so much
Fiyero @ 36
It is 100% Colmes, he has a show on XM Fox network (can’t listen) but he is the same, firm, backbone… but with InSannity… He is a rollover and show the yellowbelly dog.
Fiyero @ 33
Actually, Olbermann did a pretty good rip of that one (God bless him!)
I was shocked at the lack of reaction, generally as well. And Tony Snow repeated it, so it was an actual talking point!
And one more for your collection…Which is worse? That Cheney knew Mrs. Wilson’s employment status when he authorized the leak or that he didn’t know?
Can funny/not funny also have a regular sidebar: burglars discourage locks?
This will showcase the best placement of megacorp/GOP spin wizards and their propaganda in news “stories”.
No points for stories identifying the source’s paid work for/interest in the money party.
One point for stories using the source the money party hires…and nudges the press to.
Two points for news quoting “sources” paid by industry without revealing the ties.
Three points for “news stories” where the money party’s spinners are invited to discuss the story – without disclosing their corporate support and origins.
And so it goes – all according to the Powell Memo.
john in sacramento @ 37
Yeah. The horrific hypocrisy and irony can never be highlighted enough, imo. Good to see you John. Sorry I missed you guys at DL last time.
He’s doesn’t “kowtow” in fear of his job at Faux, he’s paid to be Inanity’s “straight man.” Though not in any comedic sense.
The lack of understanding of the CM/media business here at times baffles me – your smart people (and that is directed to the community at large, not Fiyero personally).
Froggermarch @ 39:
Thanks for that – which night did KO do that? I usually don’t miss it, but I guess I missed that one. Have to flip through my tivo again.
AZ state Repugs are at it again… Proposed bill would ban political opinions in classes
So….. you are an ASU student working at a Political Science major and YOU CAN’T talk about political opinions??
When you think it can’t get any worse in this state, then this stuff comes out of our Repug lead Legislature!
Do they think we don’t know they have people whose job is to check stuff before it’s released?
Do they think we all have memories worse than Libby’s?
Do they think we’re all as unthinking as the Washington press corps[e]?
Look, I’m a big fan of Stephen Colbert, but let’s be nice to Rich Little, okay? Rich is a decent human being, and he’s like 80 years old. His style is not biting, and not controversial and, yeah, that’s why the White House wants him at the dinner.
I mean, I really wish that Lenny Bruce was still alive (and young) and appearing at the White House correspondent’s dinner, but that’s the way it goes…
Meanwhile, let’s be nice to Rich Little.
Re W’s presser: What happened to the statement about Iraq after the “I’m living in this beautiful White House” crap? About not having been to Iraq? He said something to the reporter like “you’ve been there, I haven’t.”
Bush has been to Iraq, but nobody’s talking about that today….
katymine @ 44
I read that. One word to address it … JANET.
TRex is upstairs, stomping on fools.
Fiyero @ 41
I missed it and you guys too.
It being downtown and all, and my living inside the Axis of Stepford (Citrus Heights, Roseville, Rocklin).
p.s. I’m trying to find that really [snark] “hilarious” [/snark] clip of Shrub “joking” about wanting to be a dick tayyyter – got it on one of my posts somewhere
johninsac @ 49:
“Axis of Stepford.” Now that is also funny.
perris @ 14
He is actually a very funny (and very dirty) guy. His career is just fine – he does some touring, he’s pretty old, and I think he’s sitting on a fair amount of royalties and income from his very famous past. Most people under about age 35 don’t even know who he is, I’d gather… but there are plenty of older folks who fill the halls to hear him.
I worked with him a couple years ago, and I was surprised how topical he was and what a hoot he was. I kinda figured he’d seem older, would be just imitating Reagan ad nauseum and do boring bits from the 70s and 80s. I was really pleasantly surprised. And did I mention that I was shocked at how dirty he was, even in front of the blue-haired audience? He made me laugh pretty damn hard.
He did a bit where he imitates the last five or six Presidents having a conversation with each other. The imitations are excellent, and he put in quite a few zingers about what a dumb idiot GWB is. I imagine he’ll work in some of that into his WHCD performance.
I’m guessing Little won’t be nearly as caustic as Colbert was – after all, the WH Correspondents Club probably doesn’t want to have a repeat of that caliber. While I found Colbert breathtakingly, shockingly hilarious at that event (eclipsing what I ever dreamed he’d do when face to face with W), no other comedian will get the creative license to do that to any President again.
I’ll definitely watch Little’s performance.
FiniFiniTOOBZ! @ 16
Here is what this guy filmed on that day. Lot’s of swearing…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwNiVZWuQpE
Fiyero @ 33
I’m not sure if anyone has written much about that line in the presser, but it shocked me, too. I thought, “WTF – is he saying that he doesn’t care and it shoudn’t matter if a government (Iran) is directing weapons into a warzone against us or not – they can blame the government and use it as justification to fight them?”
By the way, why is it that Bush won’t treat his failures in Iraq and Afghanistan like he did with his failures before/during/after Katrina hit? (Make a purty speech, then walk away and don’t mention it again) If he did that in the middle east, it would at least save some American lives.
katymine @ 44
The separation of politics and state are enshrined in the COnstituttion. Or something.
THIS is Funny!
Under the small world category – I went to high school with Peter Baker. I’m glad he was asking some decent questions.
I know that there are so many things that need to be fixed after six years of BushCo, but I think it’s beyond clear the MEDIA REFORM needs to be front and center.
I got a slightly different impression of the press reaction. There were laughs, but there was a little bit of uneasiness with it. I kind of got the feeling that all these guys were thinking ‘Am I really laughing at this?’ However, easy to differ on this, maybe that is how I felt: Someone who should know better tells an off color joke…ha ha…I guess. Then can I just ask my question, please?
But the question that they should have asked was:
“Mr. President, what do you think would be worse, for you to know who leaked or that you didn’t know, and were not able to find out in like 15 seconds?”
Repeat the question to just about anything the President says.
“What’s worse: knowing the evidence for WMD was flawed, or not knowing.”
This should be the new standard.
I booked Rich for this spot. Read about it at dailydick.blogspot.com
How ironic. The web site http://bikesummer.org/ is busy exposing RAND Corp.’s spying on SF Bay Area activists, and has a similar theme on it’s page http://bikesummer.org/CanRAND.html
They even make use of a “Fun Meter” that the US military has apparently co-opted from some Bay Area cyclists. I’ve seen those Fun Meters at Burning Man myself in the 1990’s, long before the Department of Defense stole them to make a mockery of killing civilians in Iraq and elsewhere.
I didn’t see the title of the film mentioned. It is one of my favorites which I have watched several times: “Crimes and Misdemeanors” by Woody Allen. Highly recommended. It alternates between seriousness and humor.
It is undoubtedly Martin Landau’s best performance. Also Alan Alda’s.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0097123/
The comment by a poster Dastari there is right on.
Just after the clip here, the Allen character is talking to the woman he is in love with about being fired. “You would think that nobody was compared to Mussolini before.”
There is a good line by the Landau character who is a highly respectable member of society who has decided to have his mistress killed.
“God is a luxury that I can’t afford.”
There are so many good lines in this film. This is a deep and entertaining film.
I totally agree with bernarda
C & M is one of my favorite movies of all time. It mixes comedy and tragedy so well, and is incredibly nuanced. Allen is such a grab bag — there are some fun metaphysical comedies, some overly serious art pieces, and a lot of divertiing ensemble pieces. And then there is C & M, which is simply sublime.
