I think that Churchill expressed culpability for the fiasco at Gallipoli…it resulted in his decline as a politician for about 15 years. But Churchill made a “youthful mistake” and had time to reflect and correct his error.

He never again took on an offensive military campaign except when Britain itself was directly threatened.

Our military MUST OBEY all lawful orders. Period. To suggest anything else is the end of the Republic.

The answer is for the House Of Represenatives to take a very deep breath and defund this war.
That is the method provided by the Constitution for bringing the Commander in Chief to heel.

They could also state decisively that neither the surge, NOR ANY ATTACK ON IRAN falls under the War Powers Resolution that they passed in 2002. There was no reference to participating in a civil war…in essence the WPR only authorized the use of US military forces in compelling Saddam Hussein to obey UN Resolutions.

If they clearly state that this process isn’t legal (as they did in the bombing of Cambodia for Nixon) it gives the military some room to not obey an “illegal” order. And by attempting to compel officers to obey such orders would be a criminal act by others, and an impeachable act by the President!

The longer we wait for some inkling, the better I like it. Conyers is putting more thought and planning into this than Bush puts into his wars.

And poor poor Scooter. An entire future dependent on precise timing, in an administration that cannot even coordinate its’ leaked messages any more. He has to get his conviction and appeal finished while there is still someone in office who might pardon him. And hope he is not ditched like Nixon ditched Agnew. Worry worry worry…..
