I think the wider world has learned a lot about the world of blogging over the last few weeks, not just with FDL being front-and-center-and-above-the-fold in today's New York Times, but also in terms of what the people on the Right are willing to do in their attempts to kneecap liberals as we push past them and to the forefront of the New Media movement. For you see, originally blogging was a mostly Right Wing creature. It began as an extension of talk radio and for years the field was kind of like a wet t-shirt contest at an old folks' home. You had to give them credit for trying, I guess, but, well, let's just say the world wasn't ready for the results.
Now, Righty bloggers are finding themselves in a bit of a pickle. Their audience is shrinking and whatever tissue-thin veneer of credibility they may have gained since 2003 has been squandered like a pallet of shrink-wrapped cash in Iraq as they have gone chasing around and around Big Media's coverage of the Middle East in an increasingly embarrassing quest for signs of "liberal bias". From the Lebanese Ambulance canard over at Little Green Footballs, to the flurry of rank speculation and hasty retractions concerning Iraqi police captain Jamil Hussein, all the way to Malkin's pathetic attempt at on the ground reporting in Iraq, it's been one body-blow after another to their reputation. And now, much to their chagrin, the world is finally finding out just how demented and dangerous their readers are.
Take the death threats against Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwan which we excerpted here the other night. Let's review some highlights (Via Teh General):
Bud Phelps, another person who opposes "bigotry", as defined by right wing shill Bill Donohue.
It's just too bad your mother didn't abort you. You are nothing more than a filthy mouth slut. I bet a couple of years in Iraq being raped and beaten daily would help you appreciate America a little. Need a plane ticket ?
[...]
Romanco De Leone was also moved by Donohue's poignant claims about insulating the Catholic church from legitimate criticisms.
YOU RACIST WHORE. FAT UGLY BITCH. SUCK MY LONG COCK ASSHOLE I HOPE YOU KIDS NEVER LIVE AND YOUR PARENTS DIE A TRAGIC DEATH YOU ASSHOLE BITCH!
I HOPE YOUR WOMB IS BARREN AND YOUR CAREER PLUMMETS TO HELL YOU BITCH
Mmmmmm. Aren't those some good christian values, y'all?
You will find, however, that these types of threats are very common to people who have been on crypto-blogger and Pox News shill Michelle Malkin's hit list. The formidable Dave Niewert of Orcinus wonders if Malkin will cop to her fan base's hand in this in his essay "Unhinged Indeed":
Over at her site, it's not exactly crickets chirping, though it's close. Malkin has made one brief allusion to the threats in a post gloating over McEwan's departure, wherein she links to her pal Bryan Preston, who opines:
- And to the extent that the two actually received threats, it's deplorable and unacceptable. Around here at Hot Air, we know that feeling all too well.
No discussion of the likelihood that these were Malkin and Hot Air readers sending these love notes. No apology for any role they might have played in this.
Niewert has done a tremendous job documenting the many instances in which Malkin has taken out a fatwah against some prominent liberal target, sometimes going so far as to publish people's home contact information (a favorite Right Wing trick), and then playing innocent when the inevitable tide of hate and horror washes into these people's lives in the form of threats of violence and murder.
There was the case of the UCSC students whose personal information Malkin published:
There is a good reason that using the power of mass media to expose individual citizens' private lives to abuse and threats is considered unethical: It represents unchecked and abusive power. No one interested in holding the public trust should either want or seek it.
Yet this, of course, is exactly what Malkin did this week in publishing, on her blog, the home phone numbers of three students who led anti-military protests on the campus of UC-Santa Cruz.
Predictably, the students were deluged with hate mail and phone calls, including a number of death threats.
Malkin not only refused to take the numbers down — in response, she reverted to her timeworn victimization schtick, posting some of the nasty e-mails she received in return and pretending there was nothing wrong or unethical in her behavior.
There was the role that Malkin's attack dogs played in the breakdown and suicide of college administrator Denice Denton who threw herself off of a building in San Francisco while embroiled in an ethics scandal. Malkin published her contact information just weeks before Denton's death, but of course blithely denies that the barrage of hate mail and threatening calls that followed had anything to do with Denton's decision to end her life.
And finally, there is the case of Chad Castagana, the Malkin reader who is currently cooling his heels behind bars for terroristic threats to Keith Olbermann, Nancy Pelosi, and others.
We've been steadily adding to our gallery of domestic terrorists in recent weeks, and now we can add the perpetrator of the anthrax hoax letters that were sent to Keith Olbermann and other leading media and "liberal" figures — which, as I pointed out at the time, is definitively an act of domestic terrorism.
His name is Chad Conrad Castagana:
- LOS ANGELES — A man was arrested and accused of mailing threatening letters laced with white powder to Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, David Letterman and other high-profile figures, the FBI announced Sunday.
FBI agents took Chad Conrad Castagana, 39, into custody Saturday on charges of conveying false information and sending threats via the U.S. mail, the bureau said in a statement.
… Authorities claim he mailed threatening letters to Pelosi, Letterman, New York Sen. Charles Schumer, Jon Stewart of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" and MSNBC host Keith Olbermann.
Some letters included phrases like "Death to Demagogues" and pictures of victims of the 2004 Asian tsunami, authorities said.
There were some notes to those public figures in those envelopes, weren't there? Oh, right.
One of the Stewart letters featured a "picture of a recently deceased tsunami victim with a condition known as Priapism, an erect penis on a cadaver." Handwritten on the picture were the words, "Jon Stewart, Fuck Your Wife."
Stay Classy, Katherine Harris supporters!
Here are some of Castagana's other white-powder MASH notes:
To Olbermann: "There are too many demagogues in America. All of you are poisoning the well! Time to give your kind a taste of your own medicine."
To Redstone: "Fuck You Mr Monopolist [sic]"
To Letterman: "more then one way to frag a demagogue… your kind are the real poison [sic]"
To Pelosi: "CUNTFACE. IMPEACH THIS."
Now, is it me or do these writings bear a certain similarity of style and execution to the excerpts of Marcotte's death threats printed above? Malkin would have you believe that it's just a coincidence that these kinds of intimidation tactics are consistently used against her ideological foes, and that her readers are just good Christian Americans like herself. She knows what she's doing, though, and no amount of pale peach tops from Casual Corner or tiny gold crosses around her neck will mitigate her role in the spread of poisonous hate and willful disinformation in our modern media environment.
It's time for someone to call the bitch out. FDL friend and fellow ideological pit bull Ciiff Schecter (who will be joining us for a guest post tomorrow!) may well get that chance on Fox news coming up in March. Cross your fingers that Schecky can land a couple of good ones before they throw him off the Fox Studios lot and edit out his best lines. Good luck, Cliff! Give 'em hell from us Firedogs!

Hoo boy, brace for a DOS attack…
Sadly, No! got one after teasing the Malkintents just recently.
Trex! You ROCK.
Mmmmmm. Aren’t those some good christian values, y’all?
ROFL! Nice
Hey, TRex ; )
Always love a link to our friend David Neiwert
shooogarp @ 3
Why, thank you.
I’m still sweeping for typos. This post came together in a huge hurry. If you guys find any broken links or anything, let me know.
Spending time with TRex and Late Nite FDL has lately become my favorite pastime ;-)
As I recall, Castagana lived with mommy and daddy. At age 39. Is he mentally ill? Obviously. Then get him into a mental hospital. Dang! Oh yeah! Reagan closed most of them years ago.
If a 39 year old “man” has time to write all those hate letters, he has time for a job.
That picture is the best – along with the writing, TRex. Can’t wait to hear what Cliff has to say about this.
FYI, there was no job fair this year in Santa Cruz at the UC – it was cancelled due to concerns about last year’s protests.
The wingers have done their best to make hatred socially acceptable, even laudable. The more threats and venom Maniacal Malkkkin spews the more the wingers look up to her.
I can’t help but think these people are so full of self-hatred that they can’t bear it. The only way for them to ignore it is to direct their hatred and rage toward others.
Is Ann Coulter falling down on the job? Did she lose her only little black dress? Is Malkkkin replacing her as Vicountess of Vicious?
Damn man, you were worried last night about the NYT cover sparking a backlash. You just went and poked em in the eye with a sharp stick! Excellent points though, and a valuable service to keep track of all the bullshit they cause. I suppose if they’re gonna attack you anyway, you might as well have a good rhetorical whack at ‘em.
SusanD — Ann has been lying low since her voter fraud deal. But I heard she was on Fox TV this week …..
TRex – I’m glad you published this when there may be some visitors lurking about. I’d really like to see some public acknowledgment (beyond Joe Klein’s one-off statement) about the damage done by these cretins and the level of hatred and nastiness that has been spewed toward Democrats (much less liberals & progressives) over the past 25 years.
LoudounLib @ 7
I love having you here.
I hear she’s been taking some time off to spend more time with her
crack dealer, er, subpoenas.I’m sure every semi-popular blog will have a certain segment of its readership who are… not so tightly wrapped, but Malkin’s readership seems exclusively comprised of them.
She’s the Pied Piper of right-wing psychos.
Hate is Love. They love to hate you once Malkin tells them who they must hate. They live in it, they wallow in it.
They will lose and Malkin and her ilk will lose because most of the people in this country are good. Malkin is a reminder that doing good is something that has to be done always, that you cannot stop doing good.
And another important post from the TREX.

Be easy enough to find.
Get one o’them CSI ultraviolet lights, that thing will glow like a Kilauea eruption.
Christian values indeed. Here in Utah a family was recently destroyed when a drunk 17-year old caused an accident that killed a pregnant mother, and a child. Afterwards, the injured father asked for the community to pray for the teen who is, and will be in for a world of hurt.
Now that to me is Christian.
I don’t know if I would be able to do the same.
I’ll look for a link….
At one time, my brother and uncle were living under armed guard with their lives under known contract. We all survived, but not without scars.

Gosh, don’t hold back, Jacqui. Tell us how you really feel.

TRex @ 24
She gets on my last nerve.
Those people are vile, disgusting terrorists – period!
And why isn’t publishing people’s addresses (and basically yelling “sic ‘em!”) a crime when Malkin’s obviously inciting people to criminal acts? I don’t get it…
But Schecter vs. Malkin I can’t wait to see – sic ‘er, Cliff! What a dooz it would be if they’d do Hannity together!
Which is why I never watch the Sopranos, although they wanted to use our property for last season. Made me sick, but my brother and I said maybe.

That’s a mental image I didn’t need.
TRex @ 30
Oops – I meant if they’d do Hannity’s SHOW – sorry, TRex – didn’t mean to gross you out.

TRex @ 30
Oh thank god you said what I was thinking. I need mental floss.
The pour woman, Ms. Malkin, probably is a victim; a victim of neglect and lack of love or warmth or caring of any sort. Does anyone else see in her actions a need to build solidarity, acceptance from and control over others in some shallow attempt at fulfillment of her own short commings. Can you say Electra complex. Give her some pity, just don’t give her any more attention.
People like this aren’t creative or important enough to spread their own brand of evil in the world without help. They need the booster towers of the sick fringe element to spread their message. The only sane response is to ignore them.
I worry more about active evil folk who possess the ways and means to create chaos of their own volition. Take Mr. Cheney, for instance. He can actively engage in activities which harm countless millions and probably does so every day. That’s the kind of evil that deserves directed attention. After he’s kicked to the curb, then it will be time to have a nice group hug for the sad and neglected like Ms. Malkin. I bet she could be a real hoot at a book club.
Okay, gang. Packing up to head home. Going to grab some food on the way.

TRex, just the usual – a winning lottery ticket and world peace.
TRex — Wonderful post, as usual! I hope I get a chance to come back and respond more tonight, but in the meantime I have an
OFF TOPIC request –
I hate asking for prayers/good thoughts again so soon after the last crisis, but…
on the way to take the pupster to the vet tonight [we never got there because], we were BROADSIDED.
By an idiot making an illegal left-hand turn.
The car is undrivable. Passenger side bashed in, both passenger side doors un-openable, front panel over the front wheel completely trashed.
I hope I wasn’t really injured. I think not, but my right arm was in pins and needles after the impact. Many years ago I was rear-ended by someone while stopped at a red light — and I didn’t know until about 24-36 hours later that my neck wouldn’t be able to turn properly in either direction for the next several months.
Pupster appears OK, though she’s not talking about it. She still needs to get to the vet somehow, whenever we can get a new appointment.
And my beloved husband, Mr. K8, who was driving, seems to be fine. Thank God!
What a mess. And it is highly questionable if the 18 year old who hit us has insurance. He said he has “the kind of insurance which doesn’t pay for anyone else,” but just pays for him. WTF?
He got a ticket. He may get another ticket if it turns out he really has no insurance. He had no proof of insurance on him.
OK, gotta go make dinner for us — just a bite. We still have an overflow of adrenaline in our systems to work through. Then we have to plan for how to deal with the fuck-up of everyday plans tomorrow, now that we have no wheels.
Funny, though — I love this community of the Lake so much, that when things go wrong, my first impulse after telling family about it is to come here.
Love you guys! Gratitude from me in advance for any good vibes coming our way. Just cast a brief thought toward the heavens that this seeming cloud over our heads will be lifted soon, eh?
No, I can’t afford cable. Nor do I think it is worth financing. But the producers came through here to use this house and property. They used the the property that was the next town, who was making trouble at that time.
A while back before the great Billmon closed the Whiskey bar, he opined that the US was heading toward a Spanish-type Civil War. I hope he’s wrong, but he’s been right too many damn times. Maybe the Bush debacle has thinned out dittohead numbers, but if they can convince themselves that Bush was actually a “librul” in disguise, I could see the eliminationaism spawning a nasty armed movement. This has been latent for a while, and I think fear of armies of McVeigh types played a larger role than people want to believe in explaining why Gore supporters were unwilling to fight for their electoral victory. The right has unlimited money, a media empire, and an army of followers motivated by hate, who believe lies and who neither understand the US Constitution nor would they support its principles if they did accurately understand it. I think this is a bit of a problem, and I think a President Webb or President Clark would confront the threat more effectively than a President Hillary or Obama. Please, someone, prove why my paranoia is misplaced.
TRex @ 35
Pack o Kools and a couple quart of English 800, if it please ya.
{{{ Mrs K8 }}} Good vibes for you coming right up!
Looks like the italics is stuck in the on position.
Mrs. K8
Fingers and toes crossed wishing you and Mr K8 (and the pupster too) continue to be okay and not hurt.
johnSwifty @ 43
Say man, your ghetto slip is showing. I try to hide my taste for St Ide’s and the 3 piece from Popeye’s around here, but you know man. Respect.
Mrs. K8 @ 40
That’s terrible Mrs. K8. I hope you don’t have any lasting effects. I wouldn’t dare to hazard offending any powers that be with prayers from my direction on your behalf, but I certainly send all the positive thoughts I have available. Best to you and yours!!!!
Shell: “If a 39 year old “man” has time to write all those hate letters, he has time for a job.”
Umm, not to be an apologist of any sort, but that sounds just like right-wing cant.
I have no sympathy for the guy, but he’s clearly deranged, i.e., mentally ill. Whether it’s the sort of mental illness that should compel institionalization over prison is, I guess, a matter for judge and jury.
Whatever the case, I doubt he could even get a job, and suspect that his behavior would be the sort that would force anyone who did hire him to let him go very quickly.
I suppose the same could be said for many if Malkin’s ’supporters’. One could almost feel pity for them were they not so obviously dangerous, which of course compels a far more visceral reaction than pity due to the innate demands of self-preservation.
Attacking imprisoned, deranged lunatics like Castagana kind of misses the point. Malkin is the one who encourages this type of behavior, who preys on and manipulates these people for her own ends, or perhaps because she gets off on it. Malkin’s predations should be our target.
At least more so than the rage-driven, dysfuntional, addled who do her whim.
.
Refresh your screens and italics should be gone.
Mrs. K8,
The car can be repaired or replaced and your insurance company can go after him. You just take care of yourself and yours.

the exile @ 42
Wish I could say you’re paranoid, but I happen to agree with you, and furthermore think its prudence, not paranoia. And I agree a President Clark or President Webb would be better able to handle such a crisis, but Gore could too.
We had a mini discussion in Late Night just last night about this very topic. Trex and I are of the opinion the US will eventually at some point pull a Soviet style breakup and split into smaller republics.
I think modern America is possibly too big and different regions have different priorities nationally. I hope we can keep it unified though. I would hate to see the work of the Founding Fathers be for naught.

Mrs K8 – so sorry to hear about the accident – make sure you get an exam and get a journal of some sort to document everything, right down to ‘woke up stiff and sore for nth day since accident. took twice as long to get through breakfast and dishes as usual.’ Really, if you have to go for a settlement, or gods forbid, court, the contemporaneous notes will go a long way in proving your damages.
I don’t know which state you live in, but ASFIK, in most a driver’s bare minimum insurance is to protect other people, not the driver, and your own insurance should have a uninsured driver provision as well.

A friend and I once spent a week marking up a wall map of the US into different regions. We decided between ourselves there would likely be no less than 5 different republics and maybe as many as 9 or 10 depending on if TX and CA declare independence.
CO we decided would be the heart of a Rocky Mountains Republic with most of the Western states in it. In Indiana where I live, we would become part of a Great Lakes States of America. Normal regional associations would probably apply, plains states, Deep South, New England would probably all band together. CA, TX and possibly Alaska and New York are wildcards.
If you really want your hair to stand on end, read this document written in 1992 by a student at the War College about a future military coup in 2012. Much of what he theorized leading up to the coup has already come to fruition. I heard that the neocons pass this around as if its part of a roadmap.

British Columbia? I don’t know what I’d do with health care?
Maybe the world will go the other direction and all the little city states and spheres of influence will be coagulated under a single world governing body. Like, when the aliens come to attack, we’ll have no choice but to band together. The rest of the world is going to want our Apple technology to help defeat the evil overlords, just like Jeff Goldblum did in that movie.
over at skippy we have isolated a new strain of the dreaded ted barlow disease, and that is napolean syndrome by proxy.
where tbd strikes bloggers after about 2 years, making them quit blogging under the illusion that their work no longer matters, napolean syndrom by proxy creates the exact opposite hallucination: that a blogger’s work is more important than it actually is.
we are seeing several nasty cases of nsbp lately. we shall mention no names here. but we do over at skippy!

This is the first mention of Chad Castagana I have seen since November of 2006. At that time I read the FEDs and the local police were trying there best to hush up and discourage the press from writing about it. The PD never released his mugshot and no major news agency has written about this since a few days after his arrest.
Sorry Mrs. K8.
If the kid is uninsured and your company is on the hook, a cautionary comment: When you talk to the adjuster for your own insurance company, he/she is going to sound nice enough, but looking for you to “admit” to some fault. Doesn’t sound like you have any, so don’t apologize, don’t back down. They cover you, in accordance with the policy, period.
johnSwifty @ 71
I really like how you think. Of course, everyone knows you can only take over alien coputer systems with a Macbook.
And we almost let the Sopranos here again. I despise them: I don’t have cable. We were robbed of two houses, and my brother was tied up in the basement with a gun to his head. This is not fiction or for anyone’s amusement. My uncle and brother had a contract out on their lives. We lived throught it. Sort of.
Mrs. K8 – I’ve been in one of those – take it quite easy for 2-3 days. You’ll be plenty sore. Take a time for injured little muscle fibres to get well.

I know! I can’t believe the Apple marketing department hasn’t jumped on that obvious advantage when comparing the personifications of Apple vs PC capabilities…”Hey, I know you’re just a dumpy, overweight PC and I’m a hip, graphics arts Apple but did you know that I can also defeat galactic rulers?”
If only L. Ron Hubbard had had a Macbook. Xenu wouldn’t have stood a chance. More’s the pity.

OK, you gave me a great idea we can both make some money off of. What if in those Mac commercials they have they show the young hip guy that used to be on Ed talking to the dumpy white guy from Jon Stewart, and it shows the Mac guy fighting off aliens like in Independence Day, while they show the other guy accidentally launching nuclear missiles like in Wargames?
Mrs. K8, you and the husband should both have a good hot soak in the tub before you go to bed. And drink lots of water. And take some ibuprophen.
You’ll thank me in the morning.

Now he’s got an audience of hundreds of thousands thanks to CNN.

I agree with Ruby Tuesday, make notes of everything. It can take several weeks for all symptoms to show up after a trauma like that.
Also, check with your insurance company to see if they will cover the cost of a rental car. Many do. You may also want to contact an attorney to make sure you have all the info you need.Usually the first consult is free.

“The Nine Nations of North America” by Joel Garreau (1981) is a recent book that started many people thinking about the possibilities. It is an interesting read.
Maybe you know of it.
“A country which proposes to make use of modern war as an instrument of policy must possess a highly centralized, all-powerful executive, hence the absurdity of talking about the defense of democracy by force of arms. A democracy which makes or effectively prepares for modern scientific war must necessarily cease to be democratic.” – Aldous Huxley

Oh, you’re too young to remember Carroll O’Connor’s brilliance. The difference is, he was doing this little thing they liked to call acting. The thing about Beck that is so completely insufferable is the feigned/assumed camaraderie and bonhomie like, “We’re all assholes together, right???!!!”
It’s no news and no surprise that the Right-wing blogosphere is choked with furious middle aged white men so full of terror that they want to kill everyone. What is distressing is that those on the Right who do not share these violent and sick tendencies fail to repudiate those of their comrades who do.
Reasonable conservatives have a duty to denounce and repudiate the vile and loathesome among their ranks, whether these are anonymous hate-bloggers, Bill Donohue, Pat Robertson, or Vice President “Go Fuck Yourself” Cheney.
If you’re a conservative, and you consider yourself reasonable and civilized, then you need to step up and call out your colleagues who are NOT civilized, who advocate violence, and who attack the Constitution.
And if you consider yourself conservative, and you do not do this, then you are a coward and a craven and you are unworthy to consider yourself even a citizen of this nation, because you are complicit in the violence and the destruction of the Constitution that is happening around you.
This trial means a great deal to me. I know that my brother and uncle could have died and no one would have known. Ever.
Joe Wilson, you are so lucky. My brother stayed with me in Cambridge when he got the news of his contract on his life. I was at a new address, and he was only there for a few days. The trial was in three months time, and he lost his job (teaching,) but he was hidden. My family home (a parsonage) was robbed the day before the trial in Newark. At least we were all together.
I don’t know that I would have chosen your path,
but I appreciate that you did.
I remember one of the white supremacist groups back in the 80’s or early 90’s had a map and they had sequestered a nice region for themselves. It was big sky country and Idaho and Wyoming and Utah, maybe Nevada and a few other states in the middle of the nation.
Too bad the racist nitwits left out any access to ports.
Yep, a landlocked white nation at the tender mercies of the loopy left coasters.

In the last year I know I’ve actually seen this happening in greater numbers amongst the conservatives like William F Buckley, Congressman Ron Paul, former Treasury Secretary Paul Craig Roberts and even Pat Buchanan. I have seen each one of these conservatives publicly speak out against the attacks on the Constitution the Cheney Adminisitration have perpetrated.
I sure wish some of the known liberal leaders would do the same. I’m beginning to get that sinking feeling that the crew sent to do the people’s business who should be moving toward an Iraq withdrawal resolution with some teeth are gonna fall over and let the weakened Republicans rally their shock troops to intimidate them into doing nothing like they have done for 6 years.
Archie Bunker: I never said a guy who glasses was a queer. A who wears glasses is a four-eyes, a guy who’s a fag is a queer.

Oh, look, Howard Kurtz has written about her in Friday’s Post.
I’d still contend that any coverage of Malkin should consider mentioning that her enthusiasm for interning people based on the combination of ethnic/national background and existence of Muslim fundamentalist militants leads to an obvious conclusion that as a Philippina (because the Philippines have a wee Muslim fundamentalist militant, or whatever we’re calling them these days, issue), Malkin would advocate interning herself to fight the war on terror. That is, if she were logically or rhetorically honest…
(also: using the title of one’s book to level a charge at one’s enemies that applies at least as much to oneself is an interesting way to stay on message *and* expose the thoroughness of one’s projection. That’s amusingly un-self-aware, too…)

I can’t. But the worst civil violence might not be political per se. My husband watches military developments fairly closely. We had a very scary conversation last night about the numbers of criminals being allowed into the military now — the gang-bangers who enlist, go to Iraq, learn small-arms handling even better than they knew it to begin with, and are learning urban tactics like clearing and holding a house. Some of our cities are going to be in for serious crime waves. These are the guys giving their officers and NCOs all sorts of trouble. Mind you, this is not all recruits, and even among the ones who’ve had trouble with the law prior to enlistment, there will be plenty who take the second start-over seriously. But even if it’s just a tiny minority who come back meaner than they were before they went to Iraq, this could cause serious trouble.
Of course, these are the very guys who could be sucked into the sort of troubles you reference. Whether it’s politically motivated, or just garden-variety criminality, things may well be very unsettled once this war is over and the problem children in the military return home to the ‘hood. I don’t know what the answer is, but you may be right that we need Webb or Clark more than John, Hillary, or Barack.
Here’s the correction the Times is running on their FDL/Robert Cox screw-up yesterday:
A front-page article yesterday about bloggers covering the perjury trial of I. Lewis Libby Jr. referred imprecisely to the role of Robert A. Cox, president of the Media Bloggers Association, in securing credentials. Mr. Cox negotiated access for his association, which was the first blogger group to be granted credentials to cover the trial. He did not negotiate on behalf of firedoglake.com and other blogs that received their credentials later.
Question: is this accurate?
And right on cue, MalKKin gets a puff-piece from none other than Howie ‘Real Liars, Bull Sources’ Kurtz. I’m guessing that Howie saw the NYT write-up and felt the need for a profile of his own.

I hear that. The other day when Obama back peddled away from the comment that over 3000 service men had their lives wasted in a senseless war, I just felt that same sinking feeling. It’s that Democratic illness that feels like it needs to appeal to everyone. The right wing has that advantage of absolute tunnel vision such that they don’t mind alienating anyone as long as they speak to 45% of the people. Then, if half of those actually vote, and they can fix the election for another 2-3% (7-10% in Ohio), they can rule the world. What amazes me is that some conservatives actually do seem to regret it.

Well, the internment book was her ‘breakout’ book, an attempt to come across as a ’serious’ wingnut, with the prize being a Hoover fellowship or a spot at the AEI. She blew it, because she was shoddy even as a polemic historian, and had to go back to Regnery paste-jobs and alternative sources of wingnut welfare.

The cities in the future are gonna be way more violent and will be the focus of all the unrest. It is natural in that type of an environment for neighborhood militias to form like they have in Baghdad.
Look at it this way, for a long time I have considered that the Second Civil War in America is already underway. The Drug War has carved out entire sections of our cities where civilized folks dont tread at night for the gun violence, murders, robberies and other crime associated with drugs.
The Drug War is quite literally a shooting war tearing apart our inner cities. When the political shit hits the fan and people refer to it as a Second Civil War, it will simply be an expansion of the one already raging.

Though it does explain why Malkin’s resorted to doing screeched-word performance art on YouTube. What’s next, a sitcom pilot with Heather Graham?

Well, he is pointing out a truth about Clinton, but the comparison ends there and is obvious in omission of a simple fact that makes his argument teh moot. Bill Clinton, regardless of his personal foibles, was and is a very intelligent man. And here’s the rub; all over the country, even the gap toothed progeny of first cousins are waking to the blatant fact that George W. Bush is a raving idiot.
As a fully recovered former Catholic I can definitely attest that what the ex Edwards bloggers wrote was mild compared to some seriously over the line Anti Catholic rants I’ve seen over the years, mostly from Klan types who now inhabit the wingnutosphere. How these folks ever got paired up with an organization calling itself the Catholic League is a mystery to me.

Relax, it just means that being an apologist for racist internment camps still doesn’t make her white enough for Hoover or AEI. The only standards those organizations have is 1950’s country club standards, and Malkin doesn’t meet them.
.
“It may seem perverse to suggest that, at the very moment the House of Representatives is repudiating his policy in Iraq, President Bush is poised for a political comeback.”
Yes, David. It *would* be perverse, because pushing more of the same onto an angry public is not what your average “political comeback” is made of.
“But don’t be astonished if that is the case.”
Sheesh, David – the only thing that would *astonish* me is if you weren’t rooting for it, because you can’t resist the urge to verbally fellate such a staunch conservative dumbass.
“Like President Bill Clinton after the Democrats lost control of Congress in 1994, Bush has gone through a period of wrenching adjustment to his reduced status.”
Really? What the hell did that adjustment involve? Sending the same judicial nominations to the Senate? Demanding that his tax cuts be made permanent again? Telling people he wanted to privatize Social Security again? Saying we’d be staying in Iraq as long as he’s the president? Doing anything the ISG said? Does the phrase “flaming turd” have any resonance or familiarity to you, or is it just what you’re afraid Karl Rove will call you?
“But just as Clinton did in the winter of 1995, Bush now shows signs of renewed energy and is regaining the initiative on several fronts.”
Which fronts, you ossified asshole? The “Ah’m gonna bomb the shit outta more of them furriners!” front? The “Ah’m gonna keep underfunding actual troop needs and veteran benefits while my lackeys call Democrats hippies who don’t support the troops”?

Heya TRex. This is news to me. I’m not challenging you on this, I’m sincerely interesed in knowing who was the progenitor right-wing blog presence that was greater than the left’s. I didn’t see them, although I probably wasn’t looking in the right places heh.
I guess my first real politically-charged-regular feed was UNDERNEWS by Sam Smith. Interesting to note, the URL has not changed since I first happened upon it back in the late 90’s. Progressively libertarian, with a conspiratorial bent, it was nothing I had ever read before. To be sure, at the time I was the consumate, uninterested political n00b. My collegiate regimen of pure science had zero prescription for such things.
Then I found Media Whores Online. I am still wondering who it was and what they are doing now. The writing, the anger, the demonstrably qualified self-righteousness was awe-inspiring. There was nothing else comparable that was challenging the official line in real, non-soundbyte human terms.
Bartcop, Atrios and dKOS soon followed. I found a niche home for my thoughts at SmirkingChimp.
Other than the FreeRepublic, I am really not aware of a majority holding of the blogosphere by the right at the blogosphere’s early stages.
It would be interesting to see a history of the blogosphere.
Anyhow.

Time for me to crawl into my sleeping toob as well. Gnight!
Broder: “Like President Bill Clinton after the Democrats lost control of Congress in 1994, Bush has gone through a period of wrenching adjustment to his reduced status.”
Honestly, this is pretty funny, ironically if unintentionally so.
I mean, if poor David is trying to stay on George’s and Karl’s good side (in the unlikely event either has one), comparing George, who ran as the anti-Clinton, to Bill is just gonna piss off King Clusterfuck bigtime.
JGabriel, I like the ’50s country club analogy – I can picture someone saying, “Hey, just because we let the Japanese *out* of the camps doesn’t mean we have to let them *into* our clubs!”
Also, I can’t wait to see how Ayaan Hirsi Ali reacts when she discovers that AEI only likes her because she’s anti-Muslim-fundamentalist and that she’s (1) black, and (2) not necessarily a big fan of *Christian* fundamentalist superiority either.
Safi, the first intimations I saw of blogging were Slate’s comment section and Mickey Kaus (yeah, I’m sorry about that), the Drudge Report (that too, though it was the central rumor mill of 1997-2000, as far as I could tell, though obviously skewing conservative with Drudge’s obsession with the Clenis), and then luckily MyDD (”My Due Diligence” at the time) and TPM (for the 2000 election/aftermath), then I picked up on Eschaton, DailyKos, etc.
Hmm… five minutes between my last two posts and nothing between them… maybe I’ll turn the light off and go home, too…

Nice Broder rant, Chris. Well put.
g’nite, all….
Being a california native and all, I’ve had the thought that we could do just dandy as a nation in our own right. Afterall, we have the world’s fifth largest economy and a well balanced one at that. Defending it would be another matter. The california coast doesn’t lend itself well to amphibious landings and the only practical path to attack is through the southern desert terrain. The first defensible terrain starts at the grapevine. So sorry LA. Maybe Digby should move north.

Mostly. In fact, my research indicates that FDL got their press credentials on Jan 3, and MBA’s six days later. Wikipedia’s writeup (which I contributed to) has the basic facts right.
I have email addresses now, and I’m writing them back over the next few days. Tonight, I started out with Mr. Driggler.
Teddy, like you I saw what Dave meant when he asked: “Question: is this accurate?” which I felt pertained to the line “which was the first blogger group to be granted credentials to cover the trial” part. Jane et al worked on those passes for months and months. I’m betting MBA didn’t check into them until ohhhh about Nov 8th or 9th when the election shock wore off and they realized the trial would indeed be taking place.
MBA – clueless to this day what the trial or blogging is about – and being the good little fascist wingnuts seeking wingnut affirmative action zoomed right in to gin up their self importance and was dutifully given credence automatically by their embedded brethren. So it’s a good bet it’s still a half ass correction isn’t it? They want to keep pushing it? I would love to find out just how much sooner Jane got hers than they did and shut the fuckers up. Insert mirthful expletives here.
Teh Gen @ 141: “I have email addresses now, and I’m writing them back over the next few days. Tonight, I started out with Mr. Driggler.”

Mrs K8:
Late to the party as usual, but I just wanted to let you know you’re in my thoughts. Auto accidents are such a pain (in more ways than one.) First, and most important, is making sure you and all your loved ones, the pupster incuded, are all OK physically. And you’re right, sometimes the pain doesn’t register right away because of the adrenaline. The next thing is to make sure you’re OK mentally; these things can be traumatizing, even leading to minor PTSD. You know you’ve got great support here for that.
Sometimes, the worst is going through all the insurance hassle. Sounds like you’ll be without wheels for a while, which can be a major pain in the behind. I know, I’ve been there. I know it’s such a stupid cliche, but the bottom line is that as long as you’re OK, to quote Leo McGarry “the rest is crap.” Hang in there, you know you have lots of good thoughts and prayers going out for you tonight.

Great job, dinodog. Thanks for bringing back up the bizarre CNN coverage of the bombing of Beirut last August.
Chris @ 95
Funny, but when he wrote about Amanda and Melissa at WaPo two days ago, I wrote a comment there, saying he’d done a very good job overall, but in quoting Malkin as a ‘conservative blogger’, he’d failed to mention her own history of bigotry with her defense of Japanese-American internment and her attacks on all Muslims, among her other well-known biases.
This suggests Kurtz actually reads his comments. Bully for him!
Spoke too soon, before the ‘puter crashed. Kurtz at least covered some of Malkin which is more than most in the MSM ever do. And note how she admits to loneliness at the end. Where’s her Catholic fellowship?
I mean my eldest sister gets lots of that from all the time she spends doing volunteer stuff at her church’s food bank, aiding the senior shut-ins, and stuff. Or mebbe Michelle isn’t addicted to that kinda liberal Jesus stuff?
I retract my kudos for Kurtz, though, as he glossed over her internment stuff that she waged with Is That Legal? and Orcinus. As for that Iraq police captain she dissed, he didn’t mention how a Malkin peer nearly got the guy killed.
Yes, I disagree with the young hotheads on the left who resort to the same vile personal attacks on Malkin that so many on the right do. But I hardly think that’s characteristic of all liberals. Unfortunately, no accurate comparison can be done. If the Edwards’ bloggers compared the amount and content of their hate mail with Malkin’s, both sides would remain skeptical about who’s telling the truth… or who’s secretly asking friends to send stuff to ‘prove’ the point.
The bottom line: all are adults and should be able to sense when abuse crosses legal lines and take those to authorities, or to the ISPs of the threateners. In real life, how many Lefty physical assaults have actually been recorded beyond an occasional cream pie?
It hardly compares to what the Rightists have wrought. Militias, Aryan supremacists, attacks on abortion doctors and the Atlanta Olympics are just a few.
And, of course, after the first Gulf War, in which criminals were excluded from the military, there was one decorated, well-regarded soldier who mustered out, by the name of Timothy McVeigh…
That’s who the Malkins incite. We just incite Yippies to levitate the Pentagon and let hundreds of dollar bills loose on the floor of the NYSE.
Oh amd Mrs K8@40?
Hang in there. See a chiropractor fast at any sign of trouble. My best wishes to you & your hubster. You matter far more than the car.

What does that tell you about Chad Castagna?
Prior to the invasion of Iraq it simply amazed me how many people with crosses around their necks would shout violent insults to folks protesting against the pre-emptive invasion.
After the invasion as I was driving through a bank deposit window and listining to a report about dead Americans (of course the report was not mentioning the dead Iraqi’s) the woman teller with her cross around her neck said “we should just nuke all of them, the whole middle east, every one of the scum”. Just a tip for you that will conserve internet bandwidth and make the pages load faster for your readers:
The Wicked Witch of the West graphic that accompanies this article is being displayed at what appears to be a nice small quick-loading size. But this is the graphic that the user is being forced to download : (a 500 pixel x 721 pixel monstrosity), while the browser is only displaying it smaller. A 500×721 pixel graphic is approximately 25 times larger than it needs to be, meaning more bandwith being used, more strain on the servers, and a slower-loading page for the user (and this is if only ONE graphic is so-used on the page. Multiply the effect if the same mistake is being made multiple times on the same page). This is more like it.
Use an online image resizing source like: ShrinkPictures.com to make smaller versions of fullsize graphics. Don’t resize them using the height/width attributes of the html img src tag.
No charge, for the consultation.

Final closure on the NYT blogger press credentials thing. I heard from one Scott Shane at the NYT, who says that the court official, Sheldon Snook, gave Cox the credentials first, and others later. I appreciate their attention to getting to the truth on this minor point, and am willing to give Cox the benefit of the doubt that maybe he had good reasons for waiting to announce his credentials. I don’t see any reason to flog the issue any more.
