Who exactly was on that flight besides Dubya, Fleischer, Rice and Powell? There’s the original group who thought it over. Though, you might include someone like Karl Rove and/or Cheney who could’ve been consulted via telephone (check the airplane logs).

Then, spreading out from Bush to the handmaidens on to Rove, Libby, Cheney, et al, and on to ‘journalists’ who could be trusted (Novak, Miller, Russert, et al).

It probably wasn’t 1 x 2 x 6 at all. It was probably more like 6 x 4 x 8 with Dubya just providing the final okay to the top group of 6 (or so) who discussed it.

The actual conspiracy seems still to be a bit sketchy. I wonder how much info. Fitzgerald still has in his black binders.

For that matter Roberts cannot hear Gitmo cases without being in contempt re:conflict of interest.

Has nobody challenged them for such matters to this point?

And Gonzo was the WH Counsel during all of this and worse. Seems he should be required to utterly recuse himself on all these issues.

anonima at 13 — Can’t speak for Swopa, but based on the testimony elicited thus far in the trial, what has come out in testimony has specifically been about Vice President Cheney’s role. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other avenues, but testimony has pointed, thus far, at Cheney.

I am still haunted by the note that says “I’m not going to sacrifice the guy the the Pres. asked to put his neck in the meatgrinder for the incompetance of others”

Innocent: Man, I loved that movie and have watched it often over the years. But since then, what, about 1972 or so, things have really changed regarding getting whatever word there may be, out and in the public. From leaks to the media via Watergate and all its copycats to the now ubiquitous internet, controlled by no one but accessible to all (a great leap forward I believe), information is no longer the possession of the few or powerful, including both the Administration AND the media. I hadn’t seen Fitz’s sand in the umpire explanation, so thanks for that, but it doesn’t seem to me that this trial is warranted at all given the charge originally made by the media about the Plame outing, and Fitz’s evident disregard for that event.

I really don’t understand how millions of dollars spent on this trial is going to do anything but make the media look worse than it already is. And Fitz. must have known this long ago because he knew Armitage was the original Plame outer. Am I missing something (probably) or is this just another pointless legal process whereby lots of information and fascinating details are probed and exposed by virtue of a DC legal and/or media momentum that has a mind of its own separate from what might be considered logical?

Had Libby told the truth originally none of this would have taken place.

Can anyone explain why this trial is important? I keep reading about how bad it was for Plame to be outed, but neither the prosecutor nor anything I’ve read anywhere has specifically indicated how, even if done, it is a crime. I’m told she is or was an analyst with the CIA. That’s not a covert position, and I don’t believe even she or her husband had been hiding her position or place of employment. Wilson, who’s editorial and utterances has been shown by the Senate select committee to have lied about the Niger situation, so if Cheney et al tried to discredit him, it would seem they had a good reason, given the press Wilson got about something that was not true in this particular instance. If you’re going to criticize the Administration, it would seem this is not the area to do so given the facts: Wilson lied in his public statements according to the Senate Select committee report, and Plame was not covert, which means outing her by anyone was not a crime, and Fitzgerald isn’t pursuing this non-crime which was the basis of this entire affair. Hence, what in the world is going on here other than an expensive albeit fascinating look into Washington DC sausage making?

Fitzgerald explained it more or less like so – He is pursuing the guy who threw sand in the umpire’s face, which hindered the umpire from seeing the whole play and making a call.
