One of my kid's favorite lines at dinnertime is, "We have to ding!"
It started on a Friday when he was not yet two, and we had finally sat down to dinner at the end of a long week for all of us. Mrs. Peterr raised her glass, I raised mine, and in a quiet, exhausted, but happy voice she smiled at me and said "To the weekend." "To the weekend," I echoed, touching my glass lightly against hers. Then, from the high chair, a little voice chimed in loudly and proudly, punctuating each word with a swing of his sippy cup: "To. The. Weekend! Now ding with me!"
And so it is at our house, especially on Fridays: We have to ding.
The beverages vary widely, from glass to glass and from day to day - juice, wine, water, sparkling cider, beer, milk, scotch, etc. - and so do the toasts. Some days, we toast each other; other days we toast something great that has happened. Some days, the toasts bring happy thoughts, and on other days, they carry a note of sadness and loss. Some toasts are short, simply naming the person or thing for which we are grateful. Others are longer, and take on Dr. Seuss-like rhymes and rhythms.
The one thing they have in common, though, is a sense of shared gratitude. Mark Twain put it like this: "To get the full value of joy, you must have someone to divide it with." Science fiction writer Spider Robinson takes Twain one step further: "Shared joy is increased; shared pain is lessened."
It's Friday, it's the end of a rollercoaster of a week, it's five o'clock somewhere, and we've got to ding.
(rising to my feet, and raising a glass)
First, a short one:
To *ilbo, looseheadprop, and patient Firepups!
(ding!)
Why? Because I don't have any little merit badges to hand out for "trying to resist the urge to commwnt" and not bringing down the servers. It was tough, trying to remember "when did I refresh last?"
Speaking of remembering . . .
To comments kept short and links that aren't broken
To words best avoided, and sources, outspoken
To zigs best pruned down and to Preview my friend,
To helpful reminders, reposted again.
(ding!)
Thanks, twolf1 and everyone else who edited and reposted my helpful FDL hints on the first couple of threads each day to welcome the newcomers and remind the oldtimers. I don't know how to measure it, but I think it helped to keep things going a bit smoothly this week.
The traffic here at FDL has been unbelievable this week, including seasoned firepups, curious newcomers hungry for firsthand news and powerful analysis, and also trolls and other nasties. The moderators and tech crew have been keeping the toobz clear and running amazingly well, under incredible pressure, and we owe them all a whole lot of love.
So at the end of this most incredible week, fill a glass with your beverage of choice, and raise it high. For the folks who make this place what it is, we've got to give it up:
To Jane and to Christy, to Swopa and Pach,
To Scarecrow and Marcy, to TRex out back,
To Friday, to Firepups, to Mods without peer
We lift up our sodas, our wine, and our beer!
(ding!)

Good news.
GSD @ 6
That news is worth a double ding AND a booyeah. About time these rat bastoids are held accountable in the real world for the words they thoughtlessly spew.
geez, that’s so cute I’m getting a sugar rush! :D
I’m having pina coladas for dinner.
This afternoon at work, I watched a US Army soldier being returned to his family. No media present, at the request of the family. I believe he was killed by an IED.
This evening, I got my new homeowners insurance renewal in the mail. Premium increase well over 50% (up $1,000 over last year). This is separate from my flood insurance. I have to get out of south Louisiana.
But this evening, Mardi Gras parades are rolling (first weekend of two major parade weekends). Ding, I guess.
To radiofreewill and all who paid the toe-tapping tax!
To politics tv for being a vehicle for the daily summaries

What’s brown, sounds like a bell…and the Bush administration is up to its wattled neck in it?
… dung
;>)
All of the people on the front pages and moderating in the “backrooms” of FDL deserve a very big toast. What you’ve done for the past few weeks is nothing short of extraordinary.
Another toast: to everyone who has donated to FDL in the past couple of weeks! You’re playing an important part in the history being made here.
(finally, another reminder that the FDL crew could likely benefit from additional financial support right now. I’m sure the costs of providing such an outstanding service to the public are rather extensive.)
I think we also owe a huge toast to Howie and all he’s done with the Blue America candidates. ding, ding, ding, ding . . .
ding to RGB for his incredible efforts/ work herding cats!
To Howie Klein, Blue America and the new Democratic Congress!
DingDing!Ding!
I’m too wiped out from trying to keep up with work and FDL to come up with something clever, but thanks, everyone! I’ll raise a glass to you once I get some food in my stomach.
Ding!
he may not be “our kind” of Democrat, but on the basis of his name alone we should toast Congressman John Dingell!
To wingnut dreams: a Rumsfeld/Bolton ticket in 2008.
You can’t make this stuff up.
Darkblack, you want to take a swing at a campaign poster?
Lest we EVER forget….
To Patrick Fitzgerald and his merry band of patriots! And to Joe and Valerie Wilson!

Someone PLEASE send this to TRex.
Dangerstein on the loose.
Thank you .
I finally recieved my modest tax return, I have been waiting for it so I can get Marcy’s book and donate to the cause.
My modest donation has been made,$50.07.
Should be enough for a cup of coffee out there. *g*
Thanks to all of you who keep FDL on the move. It really is a spectacular web site. I can’t help but feel tinges of pride now and again just for the fact that I read it, take it all in and sometines participate with my input.
A special ‘ding’ to Jane Hamsher for fighting the good fight, in both body and spirit. I’m ever so lifted and inspired to see you where you want to be, doing what you love to do and looking and sounding so healthy while doing it. You’re heroic.
“tchin-tchin” as the say in France
OT, but I just had to post this…
An LA hospital “dumped” a homeless paraplegic man onto LA’s skid row, apparently because he lacked health insurance. The man was seen crawling on the street in a hospital gown with a torn colostomy bag.
So this is what shrubco’s America has come to? I’m sickened beyond words. Stop this ride.. I want to get off. Now.
Cops: Homeless patient ‘dumped’ on Skid Row
Story Highlights
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) — A hospital van dropped off a paraplegic man on Skid Row, allegedly leaving him crawling in the street with nothing more than a soiled gown and a broken colostomy bag, police said.
Witnesses who said they saw the incident Thursday wrote down a phone number on the van and took down its license-plate number, which helped detectives connect the vehicle to Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, the Los Angeles Times reported on its Web site.
Police said the incident was a case of “homeless dumping” and were questioning officials from the hospital.
For two years from 2001-2003 we clicked our glasses in honor of Jim Jeffords. Every night.
Now it goes to Team FDL, Fitz, and all the truth seekers. Fortunately, that number is growing.
To FDL-
for which I am grateful every day!
And to a much-loved mother named Jacquie, who left the planet today…on to her next big adventure. Ding!
cheers to draftee-to-be Al Gore.
(”accept no substitutes”)
To Froomkin, the folks at Editor & Publisher, and the others who have discovered the strength of the Libby trial coverage and knowledge at FDL AND given credit where credit is due!
to the Plame House pillow fighters!
Nothing less than best in ‘08. Gore for president.
To all who gave their hard earned cash to FDL, Marcy’s book, Plame House, and Blue America.
The new Democracy is going to have to rely on the people to feed it. The corporations are only going to try their hardest to foil us.
Start saving up so that we can give until it feels good.

Like the sound of that. Something like Revolutionary War times. To all those who are willing to sacrifice & work past midnight & beyond to make this government what it should be. For the People, by the People.
Three Dings from the roommates & myself, who will be going out soon to dinner together, for once ;) .
My fellow firepups, Sharing this experience with all of you I can only say, my cup runneth over. So I raise my cup to all of you with a hearty thanks.

Is Watada’s lawyer saying the trial may be over due to double jeopardy issues? Waiting for Christy.

We want to see the video of that, please.

Bless your heart.
To the good citizens of Concerned Residents of Pebble Beach and Monterey County (http://www.cr-pb.org) who have so couragously endured and thwarted Dirty Harry and his Pebble Beach Company posse from leveling an old growth Monterey Pine forest (some 2000 trees) for yet another 18-hole golf course and resort inside the gates to Del Monte Forest.

Ahem. That’s entirely off the record.
To MrsK/8 hope all is well with you.

I raise a glass to those who report the unreported, say what needs to be said, and most of all in a world of barking dogs media give a reasoned voice to the issues of the day. To Firedoglake.
OK who just pulled a Hillary triangle?
ting
A perhaps poorly remembered toast from college days:
So raise a glass to everything,
Since nothing is for sure;
And drink a toast to those of them
Who help the thing endure.
Swopa @ 53
It’s OK. It’s been insta-declassified.
It doesn’t make much of a “ding,” but I raise my Super Big Gulp in appreciation of all those who make FDL happen.
One ringie dingie…
Two ringie dingies…
Just got home in time to listen to Christy!!
Time to Ding! Maybe a couple of Dings!!!!
Fe @ 33

http://dangerstein.blogspot.com/
Christy is on the air now.
To Christy & All the firedogs!! Yay! Christy’s coming up on Peter’s show!
Ding!
shopgirlove @ 47
from my experience:
“salut” is a formal toast; it is also used in the familiar as a greeting, akin to “hi” or “ciao”
“sante” (a votre sante - with an accent on the ‘e’) is more common as a toast. “to your health”
“tchin-tchin” is a very familiar toast and may well have originated with the italian “cin-cin”. the hard “ch” sound is not natural to French, thus they had to put a t in front (like the African country Tchad).
ding!
To Christy!

I am getting tipsy.
Shields and Brooks on the NewsHour just now: Round 1
Brooks: Feith, partisan fight, old news, unimportant.
Shields: Urgent, tells how we were lied into war.
Shields didn’t yield to “Talking Points” Brooks, good on him.
Swopa- left you a reply downstairs.
Hugh @ 73
I heard that. Shields was forceful, you could hear the rage in his voice.
Ding! to the FDL community - and especially the mods and all the people who help fill the Lake.
Ding! to Fitz and his colleagues.
and Ding! to the Sea Shepherd Society -
they have located and engaged the rogue Japanese whaling fleet in Anarctic waters.
May the Farley Mowat (Sea Shepherd’s flagship), her sister vessel the Robert Hunter, and their brave crews end the criminal plunder of an International Marine Sanctuary by any means necessary.
Ding!
Shez @ 66
“is this the party….?”
Delurking to thank you all for a fascinating few weeks of coverage from the Plameologists. The novelty has increased the MSM exposure, and the implications of the WH-media machinations.
And this was so much easier to follow due to the excellent background analysis that had been done by you guys over the last couple of years.
Ding!
Hugh @ 73
I call him David “Babbling” Brooks.
Punaise, shall we tchin-cin?
Hugh - I could tell by the look on Jims face at the end David was laughing at Sheilds. Brooks sounded a bit desperate, imo.
Matthews says on “Hardball” of Feith, “that it’s a crime to start a war” based on lies.
sounds like the The Peter B. Collins Show will be taking calls for CHS after the break…
Let’s go kill some Orcs!
But first, a toast…
Ding!
shopgirlove @ 80
va bene comme ca!
How about a soon to be toast: Libby!
And not a moment too soon. *g*
This show has the BEST hold music.
punaise @ 77
Aren’t you guys worried that some of the younger crowd won’t understand this reference?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 87
you said that this morning about Sam Seder :-)
Punaise, molto bien! Love you all gotta run, ding on!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 87
What music would play on FDL during LibbyLive-Blogging, as we wait for updates?
Cheers to all especially CHS and Jane H! Nobody does it better.

Well today it was Thor doing his song Action on Merv Griffin, but usually Donita has good stuff on Friday afternoons.
Jeopardy! Theme.
FiniFiniTOOBZ! @ 97
Yes, that was quite something…
Dana Milbank certainly trivializes (listening to interview)
Balrog @ 99
Yes, that was quite something…
Hmmm…something…yes, it definitely was…something.
Thor was more dong than ding.
punaise @ 102
We had a Governor in Minnesota once that, um, oh never mind…
I’m chilling a lovely NZ Sauvignon Blanc for later today and I will ding away in honor of all of you patriots inside the USA (it is really way too early on a Saturday here to start dinging now). You keep hope alive and cynicism in its proper place (a small little seat on the side table). Good wit, sharp intelligence, and a refusal to accept less than the truth (oh, and friendly and loyal spirits)….it is all here! Ding!
Hey, here’s something definitely Ding-Worthy:
There are some who call me… Tim.
Ding!
NZ Expat @ 59
No. Sorry…I should have clarified that. But thanks for asking. I have been her nurse for the last six weeks, and was with her and her family today. One of those patients and families that I will hold especially close in my heart…
DairyMaid @ 108
Bless you and your work, DairyMaid - and blessings on Jacquie and her family.
Petro @ 79
Welcome, Petro!
shopgirlove @ 80
Wow! That sounds like an invitation to a pillow fight!
(Or, I suppose it could be the name of a panda. Or, perhaps tchin-cin refers to pillow fights between pandas.)
P.S. For the record, I have not yet started drinking.
I was just looking at a Chris Kelly column at the Huffpo. It had the best description of the Marine’s V-22 Osprey I’ve ever seen.
And he also had something to say about the latest incident in blonde news:
Yeh Christy! Another fine interview!
Great interview Christy…. So nice to hear the update after such a busy work week and no time to catch up.
Christy! That was a fabulous job you did. Especially since some of the interviewer’s questions seemed to be all over the place. But, you did such a great job of homing in on important points in your replies!
Elect Donnie and Johnnie …NOW!
;>)
Time for more toasts! Ding! Ding!
christy has finished the wrap-up on the show - nice work!

When a rehab doctor says the patient is “expressing opinions on his daily activities,” the activities often involve pain and the expressions are often unprintable in daily newspapers: “That #$&*ing hurts!”

ding indeed. how’s “The Crosby Clambake” going with all this inclement weather?
Ding to the soldiers who are putting their lives on the line for their country despite being abandoned to the meat grinder that is Iraq and now Afghanistan by the Cheney Administration.
And ding to their friends and families who miss them greatly.

Wow, reddhedd, you’ve come a long way in the past year or so! A veritable media fireball, you are! Nicely done.
