Ok, let me get this straight. . .
Bob Woodward got a leak about Plame from Armitage but covered it up while reporting about the case; he's on the witness list. Administration mouthpiece Judy Miller played the first amendment martyr and went to jail after trying to get the word out about Wilson for Libby; she's already testified. The AP just won its motion to have the Libby grand jury tapes released to the public, to the rousing cheers of the establishment media.
John Dickerson, formerly of Time, co-wrote helped produce a piece about the leak offering up unrebutted White House spin when he knew personally it was bullshit, misleading the public by propelling administration propaganda. Everyone is ignoring him on both sides, perhaps because he's so credible, who knows? Time doesn't even have a reporter at the trial, unless you include blog writer Ana Marie Cox, who, I can charitably say, has never distinguished herself for her command of the issues in this case.
Jill Abramson of the New York Times will likely be called by the defense to rebut her former employee, Judy Miller, although the Times is trying to quash the subpoena (it will lose, as it did with David Sanger). Tim Russert, who long pretended he had no connection to the case, is expected to testify today. We've learned previously via hearsay that Russert hates his colleague, Chris Matthews, according to that serious DC player and off the record source extraordinaire, Mary Matalin. Matalin also, via hearsay, indirectly Former media contact for the Office of the Vice President, Cathie Martin, informs us through her direct testimony that Meet the Press is the administration's best outlet for getting its lies message out. Don't even get me started on the National Review.
Former Ambassador Richard Carlson is on the Advisory Committee of Libby's defense fund. Hey, Tucker: who's your daddy? Do you or does MSNBC disclose this connection in the course of your running commentary on the case? No, I didn't think so. Oh, and while we're over there, who's that in charge of the Libby defense fund? Why, it's Mel Sembler, Lieberman's go to fundraiser for his last campaign bid. Small world, eh?
And, as all the world knows, bloggers can't be trusted as reporters or analysts of news because they are partisan and profane. Bloggers, it seems, have an agenda.
Whuh?
There are no virgins here, folks. Everyone around this trial has an agenda, including every media outlet. Judge Walton has already wryly observed that the press has not exactly distinguished itself over the course of this investigation (I wonder if he has this history in mind?). Every media outlet is, in some larger sense, on trial here, and they all know it. Reputations and fig leaves are falling left and right. Meanwhile, I'll put our work up against all comers on this story. . . and not just since the trial started, either.
Once this trial is done, and judgments come down, let's dispense forever with the elitist fiction that our establishment media outlets and their "serious" pundits are neutral, disinterested observers of national events. Get over it people: you're just like us, though you're quite a bit more sheltered from the public than we are. You faith in access based journalism has betrayed you and all the rest of us.
By the time you read this, I'll be heading to the courthouse with Jane, Swopa and Arianna Huffington to observe the day's proceedings. I just have to see if Timmeh waves to Arianna as he slinks to the stand, ya know? Let's just hope the Monsignor does in fact appear today, as expected: the originator of Russert Watch should really have the opportunity to, er. . . watch Russert. I'll stop by the comment thread later on, so in the meantime, please chat about without me.
Update: This post has been updated in the following ways 1) John Dickerson "helped produce" but did not "co-author" the article referenced via Media Matters; 2) Mary Matalin was not the one who characterized Meet the Press as the administration's best outlet, but Cathie Martin, her direct successor at the OVP, did, during the course of her direct testimony; 3) Mel Sembler's name was originally, incorrectly given as "Max." Thanks for everyone's editorial help! Open source media strikes again.

Morning, firedogs!
Good morning everyone! Nice post.
tommy yum! Esten!
Heard our own Marcy on Nice Polite Republicans the other day. The other guy (from National Review, I think) was mouthing the talking points about how this trial wasn’t a big deal, blah blah blah. Marcy spoke with the authority of one who is completely familiar with the case.
The next piece was about how, esstentially, bloggers can’t be trusted.
Hey twolf!
i was just watching Jane’s and Swopa’s PoliticalTV report and Jane recalled Bush’s “Soprano” remark to the Press; “You reporters really keep secrets, don’t you” kind of thing - doesn’t this put Bush right in the cover-up if not the crime itself?
G’mornin. You’re right - part of what is so interesting in this trial (especially this week, IMO) is how the media covers it. There is no doubt that this trial shows how the goverment and media collude to get their stories out. Quite an indictment of the press.
EPUd from last thread:
It’s a toasty 4 degrees in Motown. Most of the schools are open. I usually work at a school on Wednesday mornings, so I was up early, acting just like I did when I was 10 years old, sitting in my bathrobe watching the TV and waiting to cheer when they showed “mine” was closed. It wasn’t.
I normally want to go to school, but I had a feeling the kids would be cranky, and I had a dinner celebration that included an incredible chocolate crema mousse. Delicious, but it kept me too wired to sleep well.
After getting out of the shower, I got the call that my class itself was canceled for the day. I’m trying to decide if I should put on footie pajamas and make pancakes & watch cartoons like I did when school was canceled all those decades ago…
Nah, I think I’m gonna do breakfast and then watch the Libby trial proceedings here while also watching C-SPAN hearings. Watching these Senators blather on & on reminds me of some cartoon characters like this guy.
morning firepups. do you think we will hear more about Rove as this trial goes on? my gosh, what are we going to talk about when this trial wraps up? I am willing to bet further indictments are pending.
Fitz for Attonery General. Now that has a nice tone eh?
couple quick typos, Pach:
“sait” “as it”
“you faith” “your faith”
sorry to rush off to work - will return to read thoughts at 6pm!
heyas. just here with swopa and jane having coffee. arianna just arrived. what a hottie!
Chris Matthews on Imus this morning:
Imus asks, what’s the big deal about this trial? Matthews tells him this time it’s not the cover-up, it’s the crime…the war is the crime.
Further Matthews–why not Rudy? Hey, he cleaned up New York [conveniently forgetting a lot of other cities also dropped crime rates, thanks to programs like Clinton’s COPS…which Bush is now gutting. What is it about American security that Bush hates?..but, like others before me, I digress…]
Matthews notes Guiliani reign had a whiff o’ [my words] fascism [his word]. Fuckin’ A, huh, Chris? Sorry about that nonexistent MSNBC bleep button.
And to look forward to. Senator Webb tonight on Hardball.
Caveat: mostly I like Matthews. That’s my agenda :-)
And Pach, this morning as always, genius writing.
Tell Arianna she’s an inspiration for us little bloggers out there!
Pach — do give Jane and Arianna a hello from me and The Peanut. :) I’m certain that Russert will be thrilled to see Arianna in the courtroom today. *g*
Hey Pach
It was Cathie Martin who said MTP was Dick’s best gig.
I can’t wait to see how the press covers Russert’s testimony. Dodgeball anyone?
G’ morning, all… looks like it’s gonna be a Very Interesting Day.
Heard from a colleague last night that 2 of my former parishioners are near death. Youngish women who brought strength and laughter to every encounter. Will be calling them today. Sad beyond words.
Looking fwd to another great day of liveblogging.
Say Pacachutec, tell us… what’s Arianna really like? :) :) She’s great, and I heard and loved what she said about our dear late Molly. Big fan here, in Massachusetts.

Howard Kurtz just said Russert is the “Clean up hitter” for the prosecution!
raven @ 21
Let’s hope he hits it out of the park.
It does seem like Timmeh will be the final nail in Scooter’s coffin. There’s something lame about “the VP told me, but I promptly forgot until I heard it from….um…Russert! Yeah, that’s the ticket!” defense.
RevDeb @ 22
A walk off maybe?
off to work. back in a few.
Chickens coming home to roost all over DC it seems. Watched Bremer squirm in the HOT SEAT on the C&L video infront of Waxman’s committee - a true thing of beauty!
You all have fun in the courthouse! Payback is a bitch isn’t it! Little Timmy gonna get his crutches kicked out from under him on Fitzmas.
Ah, the usual suspects. Excellent rundown Pach! Thanks, once again, for showing the MSM what intrepid reporting is all about.
And Tucker’s daddy! Whoo hooo! I didn’t know about that one. If that gets legs it’s enough to make someone put a bow tie back on!
Rock on!
Great Post.
Even when the media tries to cover the inept or co-opted press angle of this story they fail miserably.
I would guess that Russert is a little peeved at being dragged into this by Libby — and especially about the Matalin crack last week. Should be a very interesting cross-examination, but I’m certain that he’s had good pre-testimony discussions with his own lawyer about maintaining his composure on the stand. *g*
Tuckie’s daddy, hmmm…, that will now be all over the internet today. Good job Pach. Good post too.
Yeh AZ Matt — I sure hope pix of those PALLETS LADEN WITH $100 BILLS were all over the MSM last night. His Exalted Viceroyness, The Great and Terrible Bremer, looked like a total oaf. As did the (R)s on that committee, striving to cover his ass with their lame talking points. BwaHaaaa.
Imus and Kurtz tried to finesse that “Russert hates Matthews” stuff…. How about the “snake,” Mary? That’s such a “you” comment from the Medusa of American politics.
Sounds like this day’ll be a major media gaggle–they loves some schadenfreude in the morning. Even Kurtz is headed your way, Pach.

In-the-coverup, yup, that’s where I put him when I heard the remark.
Just a gentle reminder how they were supposed to play the game…
Christy Hardin Smith @ 29
I hope he freaks! Deer-in-the-headlights, or in his case - bunny rabbit-in-the-headlights! If he becomes roadkills then maybe Arianna can have his job and make folks squirm on MTP.
AZ Matt @ 30
And where’s the disclaimer about O’Beirne’s husband??????????????????
Oh, and one last Imus observation: Eff-you, Bernie. I like Soledad. She does her job.
Well, we’ve warmed up a degree from the overnight, it’s now a balmy minus 24…time to take on the day.
CNN currently doing a piece on a memory loss condition. Coincidence?

while everyone is talking about Hil/Obama or the non debate to debate, this guy may be loaded for bear and could do more to stop the Chimp than many of the other players - comes across as well informed, and capable of presenting otherwise complicated info in digestible form
Christy (and Jane, and Pach)
I am the type who’s eyes glaze over at the prospect of balancing the checkbook - it is a tribute to all you do here that this ol gal was willing to sit and listen to a rather wonky discussion of the proposed Federal Budget : )

Turns out that snakes don’t just form Matalin’s hairdo; apparently they also slither outta big ugly inappropriate “don’t go into PR if you can’t accessorize” flower pins worn while trying ineffectually to cover the fact that Big Dick was sloshed while he shot his friend in the face.
But I digress.
Thanks for the insightful post, Pach, and thanks to ALL for the wonderful liveblogging.
I’ll be one of the “.edu domains” peeking in between classes, grading papers, and class prep today. I can’t wait until my office hours at 3:00 so I can glue myself to the screen to read through the info and everyone’s comments!
Was I the only one who couldn’t help giggling when that redacted passage about the “snake” went through?
Prairie Sunshine @32–”Medusa of American Politics” is a great moniker for Matalin; I will visualize it every time I look at her. Probably archaic Greek style with a big nasty tongue hanging out between fangs–she would make a perfect gorgoneion on the breastplate of Shrub. I need to photoshop something later perhaps…
Ah great day in the morning. It’s going to be a banner day for bloggers everywhere. So looking forward to it. I’m as giddy as a school girl.
Pach, Jane, Marcy, Swopa, Christy, Trex !!!!!! And, anyone else who posts today….I’m thanking in advance for all you’ve done, for all you do, and for all you will do.
May the muse sit lightly on your collective shoulders all day; and, LET THE FUN BEGIN!
Go get ‘em guys. Should be an interesting day.
ps. MEL sembler
For the first time since this trial started, I’m going to actually be looking forward to the cross today.
I just have a feeling that this is where we’ll see the first inklings of the ‘Scooter as the martyr’ defense and Wells will have all of Scooter’s press secrets to throw up to Timmeh to impeach credibility.
I have a hunch its going to be very interesting.
how are Swopa’s fingers doing? holding up?
Both Jane and Marcy have posts over at HuffPo under Blogposts. The ones that have the tweeny-weenie photos next to them. Too famous now! I expect this will be a busy site today when Timmy comes to the stand. At least he will finally learn how a pro questions people.

Citizen Jane @ 40
I had a classic studies class, eons ago, that brought in a Jungian angle of the Medusa Myth as and archetype representation of the vagina which, of course, scared the hell out of the more repressed aspects of the male Greek culture so they vilified the concept with a myth about wiry hair like snakes, spits blood, and turns you to stone!
Well, not in invoke the ‘c’ word, but in light of that archetype, I think Ms. Matalin is an excellent example of a gorgon!
too much excellence here. i wish i had more hours in the day to follow every detail. fdl has set new standards in the coverage of this whole sordid business.
i just can’t shake the pure astonishment of seeing these crooked buggers tring to use a memory defense. i’m just walloped at the thought that they want the jury and the public to accept that in a time of national peril and in a time of war, they hung a security asset out to dry because the vice president and his highest deputies were absent minded and forgetful. doesn’t offer much in the way of confidence in anything else they get their grubby fingers on, like the treasury, the military, the tattered remains of your constitution. sick and sad in the beltway.
oh. could someone please ask arianna to do something about the big flashing ads on huffpo. for some of us with poor eyesight, they’re quite uncomfortable. i have to open little text boxes to cover them while i scan the headlines. jane, you look great! hope you’re getting lots of rest and not over exerting yourself. be well pups.
@49 — typo in last word — Gorgon :)
Say, will someone post here when the liveblogging begins? TIA

AZ Matt @ 26
I taped that last night - have not gotten to that part but looking forward to watching it this evening - perhaps I should break out a six-pack or something. Early opening remarks from Repubes were incredibly self-serving and petulant. At least John Duncan spoke, as always, like a rational human being about this war and had to school his compadres about the what being a true conservative really means.
Issa belongs on The Sopranos.

You lucky thing, you. Wish I could stay home in my bathrobe, watch C-Span and follow the trial all day!
Did you watch the State of the State last night? Jennifer was on fire — what a fabulous speech! (But then when doesn’t she give a fabulous speech?) I just hope the Repubs in the Senate (who had already made up their minds before she spoke) don’t keep her from accomplishing what needs to be done to save the state.
S.O.S. from MA @ 51
G. Gordon Liddy, another Medusa. But I fixed it, thanks!
And let’s not forget Neo-Con Mel Sembler, Bush’s Ambassador in Rome from 2001-2005 when the Niger fakes wee found. The former Finance Chair of the Republican National Committee, (2001-2005), and Florida’s Commiteeman to the RNC (1994-2000) he also served as the
mega fundraiser for Joseph Lieberman after Lamont beat him in the primary.
In key respects Sember is a a modern U.S. king maker - and foreign policy shaper. He arranged a trip to Israel for George & Laura Bush through the RJC in 1998 (Jewish News Weekly Aug 4, 2000). In recent weeks (late January 2007) he traveled with with Republican candidate Mitt Romney to Israel (courtesey TampaBay.com). Calling to mind his earlier work for Bush, Sembler now is a member of Romney’s financial committee.
Scandal has followed Sembler closely - from the $83.5 million Italian palace that was purchased for our embassy which he named after himself, and the $30 million to refurbish it. He & his wif also founded the infamous “Straight” drug-free program which has been the subject of scandal and suit.
So much for the press paying attention to the trial…..CNN is live at the airport to await the astronaut going into details about the airport, the terminal, camera angles. They will obsess over this for days and they’re saying ‘everybody wants to know’. They even referenced John Mark Karr and Runaway Bride. They’re just a tabloid. The house of cards in DC is finally being taken apart and they will spend 24/7 on the astronaut love triangle with only occasional mentions of the Libby trial. Pathetic.

Fitz for Supreme Court!
Just heard from the bookstore that they got Marcy’s book in. Will pick it up at lunch. Can’t wait.
The larger issue wrt this trial is the conduct of the Bush Administration in the lead up to war, not the actions of the press. Let’s keep our eye on the prize; a guilty verdict for Libby is as good as a grand jury indictment of Cheney. Let’s face it folks, nobody at the time thought anybody could possibly fabricate such outrageous lies, even a soul-sucking vampire like Cheney. Nobody. Presidents and Vice-presidents just don’t do that.
I think the outcome of this trial is significant for one reason alone. A guilty verdict for Libby must force Henry Waxman to investigate. Think of Waxman as our Eliot Ness and Dick Cheney as our Capone. As chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Waxman has the singular power to issue subpoenas without a committee vote.
I’m glad everyone here is rah rah for Fitz as they should be; but imagine how you’re goning to feel when Waxman gets his hands on Cheney. I already bought the popcorn.
ot - another helicopter downed in iraq as some big baghdad action begins. war and piece has the links.
S.O.S in MA:
I’m hoping the same. As noted in an article yesterday, Fitz is doing the job the press should have been doing years ago, rather than being complicit in the outing of a CIA agent.
Yes, as the scales fall from our eyes, we realize that these brilliant, well-educated journalists aren’t so smart after all. They road to fame and fortune on their ivy league degrees and connections, wrote some pretty prose and flamed out early. The rest of their careers have been spent lazily repeating the psy-ops memes planted in their minds by the people who give them “access”. With very few exceptions, (Totenberg, Shuster), they have undistiguished themselves. And Ana Marie Cox is rapidly becoming the new QueenBee of the DC establishment with her recent election as Prom Queen.
I think we can officially stop regarding them with awe. Firedoglake can stand toe-to-toe with any of them and best most. Take your place, FDL. You have arrived.
as far as i can see, type a 30 on libby. he’s done, already toast. though it will be most enjoyable to watch his counsel make the wash media piss all over themselves.
ot: greenwald’s discussion about how giuliani should not be so easily dismissed as a republican candidate. the comments were, i thought, full of interesting give and take.
also, waxman and the oversight committee. you can hear the repubs braying about how this review isn’t helping anyone. guess what, it is. and it’s essential to learn as much as possible, not only for the public record, but so we don’t let this happen again. as in…iran.
good days when the pendulum swings your way.

Yayyyy! You’re another bookstore-type.
Be sure to pump up the book to their folks in chg. of ordering, while you’re there.
Get em to put some out in prominent place, if they have extras.
If they don’t have extras, ask why, & point out how it soared up the sales charts.
Ask if they know about the trial, & be prepared to be stunned, just stunned, if they’re not.
Ask if they realize it’s being live-blogged RIGHT NOW, & Marcy was the 1st ever to do that.
Get ‘em to open up the dang book & just LOOK inside. That’s all it takes. Altho I have to admit, the cover picture is captivating.

Aw shucks. You know all this better than I do.

The Times theory of keeping journalists out of the witness stand can’t be a good thing for their newsroom. It’s just asking for someone to walk in, stick up the place, and walk out: sure, there are 100 folks who saw the crime, but none of them can testify, at least according to their boss.
Good morning, Plameholics! I am distraught because today I have several meetings that will force me away from my computer. Hopefully my Blackberry web browser will be able to display this site!!!
We all have to root for Timmeh this morning, as much as we like to mock him, because today at least, he is on the side of the angels.
So let us all bow our heads and call upon whatever deity(s) we worship and ask for strength and clarity for Timmeh as he is cross-examined by Team Libby.
Libby Live: Libby Grand Jury Testimony, Six
Morning to all.
Pach, tell it like it TI is. The boss is away today, so I plan on keeping up to speed.
Fresh liveblogging goodness is up and ready for the reading, gang. Things are starting a little slowly this morning, but Swopa’s fingers are at the ready. (And no, I didn’t mean THAT way…)
Great post Pach!
The really sad and infuriating thing is how the trial is being virtually ignored by the press. We may all be rejoicing in this trial and what it is uncovering but the average news consumer is hearing almost nothing about it. Every night I flip around trying to find some coverage. Even Matthews and Olberman only have David Shuster’s reports with no amplification panel- just a dialog with the host- so the whole report is three or four minutes tops. And although Shuster does excellent reports on the Libby-based aspects of the trial he does not go into the important secondary story which is, as we all know, the seedy behavior of the press. I would say this story is getting no coverage at all: the MSM has been quite effective at sweeping their own behavior under the rug.
It’s been very cold in Vermont, with wind chills from -10 to -40 below at night, and zeroish in the morning. I’ve been worried about the birds, and have all kinds of goodies out there for them. I feel better now that I see they are flying out from the barn. I pictured them lined up freezing on a windy branch at night.
I have to say that we largely enjoying this cold air. It’s about time.

Nice analogy! I wonder if Cheney has paid all the taxes due on his holdings from Haliburton? There are many things about the Veep that I suspect would not even remotely stand in the light of Mr. Waxman’s white, hot spotlight.
…His ‘energy’ cabal…his relationship with Ken Lay, Exxon, et al.
But, while I agree this is the brass ring; don’t ever let the MSM off the hook for rolling over like punks. There’s a trial going on to decide TREASON in the highest offices in the land and CNN is doing a story about a crazy lady who wears diapers. It would be funnier, if it were not so very, very sad.
Back Porch reading in Minneapolis, currently is a -4, but that needs to be a plus or minus three or so, because it is a very cheap thermometer. Apparently Embarrass Minnesota set the record yesterday, with a -41. Embarrass and Tower usually compete for that honor.
Morning Christy!
We’re gonna get a heat-wave today - up to 12 degrees F, supposedly. Sunny & beautiful to look at tho. (northeast OH)
Out running errands yesterday, we saw a number of folks, here & there, walking out in the cold, very few of them dressed warmly enough for the conditions (below 10 degrees F & icy wind). Makes me shudder, wondering how many more are out there, suffering. The homeless shelters can’t keep up with the need. It’s just heartbreaking.
And bozo’s only thot is to cut taxes!?!

Paul X @ 63
The two issues, the conduct of the Bush administration in the lead up to the war and the behavior of the press are inextricably linked. An independent press that acts as a watchdog is an indispensable part of a functioning democracy. If the press had done its job in the lead up to the war we might not be in it. As the coverage of this trial shows, you can have all the earth-shattering, corruption revealing trials and hearings in the world and if they are drowned out by astronauts having affairs monkeys in diapers it won’t make a whit of difference. You know: “If a tree falls in a forest…”
