Yesterday, I put out a plea to contact your elected representatives and tell them how you feel about escalation. I'm asking you to take it a step further. If my plea isn't enough, then consider this – do it because Sen. Russ Feingold is asking you to make the call, send the fax, set up a meeting — whatever it takes to get your elected officials to hear what you have to say on the mess that is Iraq.
And do it today.
Yesterday evening, I was on a conference call with several other bloggers and Sen. Feingold, and he made a passionate statement against the mess in Iraq — and for all of us standing up and telling our elected representatives that we have had enough. Enough. Sen. Feingold's office was nice enough to send a partial transcript of the Senator's remarks, and I wanted to share that with you:
Thanks everybody for participating. You know I went out again this weekend, in the very cold Wisconsin weather, just as I did in the previous two weekends, and I went to some of the most rural, Republican towns in the state and held town meetings. And you know this attitude about what should be done in Iraq is a consensus…everywhere but in Washington. People do not want us to just slow walk this, they don’t want us to just worry about the escalation, they want us to get out of Iraq.
So I am determined to support whatever will help us end this mistake quickly and in an orderly and safe manor. I’m also determined to oppose things that I think will slow that down or that will lock in the status quo. And that’s exactly why I think the Warner proposal is unacceptable. In terms of the test I just gave you, I supported Biden and Dodd in committee. The Biden thing didn’t do nearly what I wanted. To me as a first step it was harmless and maybe a little bit helpful. But it just simply said, look we should not do this escalation. Fine, we can agree on that. The problem with this Warner thing is that it is loaded with language that blocks in my view, or at least makes much more difficult, the only logical next steps.
One provision basically says this cannot be taken to mean we cannot start withdrawing the troops at this point or anytime in the near future. Another provision talks about a robust, in effect surge approach, in Al Anbar province, which is a formula for disaster. We are losing most of our people in Al Anbar province. People forget that this is really two different wars. This whole thing about a civil war and sectarian violence is an issue in Baghdad. Al Anbar is an attempt to try to subdue an insurgency with a huge supply of ground troops. It’s not going to work. And yet the Warner (resolution) explicitly endorses that kind of an escalation at this time.
And then there’s also a provision that attempts to throw roadblocks at any attempt by Congress to use the power of the purse, which is an entirely constitutional and appropriate step for us to consider at this point. So those who want to support Warner, it’s understandable because they want to make some points vis-à-vis Bush. There’s the temptation of defeating Bush on something he has put out there. I understand that. But it’s incredibly short sighted, it’s going for some kind of political point instead of getting at the heart of this matter. Who was thinking about whether or not to escalate in Iraq on November 7th? That wasn’t the issue. The issue that determined that election was whether we should be in Iraq at all. The answer was no.
So we should not sign onto something that in my view, looks almost like a reauthorization of what’s going on right now. It is incredibly weak, even dangerous, and I think reminds me more of the Gulf of Tonkin resolution than it does of a resolution that really gets us out of the situation.
I am really troubled by the attempt of not only Republicans but leading Democrats to essentially finesse the situation we’re in right now. This is not a time to finesse the situation, this not a time to slow-walk. This almost reminds me a little bit of the way Democrats behaved in October of 2002 which was trying to play it safe, trying to use words such as, “well, we’re going to vote for this resolution but what it really means is that the president should go to the U.N.” That stuff doesn’t fly. And this kind of an attempt to go a little bit of the way just to show you’re on the other side of the President doesn’t fly either.
What we need now is a strong position to get out of this situation. That’s what I have proposed in a bill and we have also offered an amendment to this item that is in theory before the Senate now, which would basically strike the provisions that I just talked about, that were harmful. It’s already been cosponsored by two of the most distinguished and senior members of the Senate – Senator Leahy and Senator Dodd. So the three of us have introduced this amendment that says, look, you can’t have language in this Warner thing that says you can’t start withdrawing troops. It says you can’t have language that talks about a surge in Al Anbar province, and you can’t have language that says we can’t consider reducing the funding. So this is an important moment to see if we’re really going to try to end this war and frankly I’m disappointed that democrats are playing it too safe on this.
Strong stuff. And he meant every word of it.
Howie has a write-up of the call, as does Brad and Sirota and Ian. And so does Bob Geiger. And Crooks and Liars has video up of Feingold's appearance on Olbermann's show last night that is well worth the watching.
I have come to the conclusion that we get the government we expect and that we tolerate, and frankly, a whole lot of whiny doomsayers have been running around saying "there's nothing we can do, nothing's ever going to change, blah, blah, blah" for as long as I can remember. Well, crowd of Eeyores, here's what I say: you whined that the Democrats would never be able to take back Congress in November, and yet they did. Why? Because a whole host of people got off their butts all across this great nations of ours and did the work necessary to make that happen, every day, for weeks and weeks on end.
Here's a thought: how about we do that again? This time, let's make our project getting the hell out of the Republican mess in Iraq. Because I refuse to sit idly by while young men and women die for George Bush's ego since he and the Republican party are unable to admit that they made a huge mistake. Call your members of Congress – the Capitol switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. And do it today. If every person who reads this blog makes a call — and gets people they know who agree with them to make a call, and so on…I want you to imagine the message that could send.
Sen. Feingold said last night on the call that they had the votes on McCain-Feingold long before it was ever passed, because Senators wanted to vote for it, but just didn't feel the public push to do so. That it was only after members of the public made it clear with repeated calls and letters and faxes and in person discussions that they finally saw movement with the legislation. And he asked that we tell all of you that — and that he hopes that all of you will, in turn, call your representatives and tell them in no uncertain terms exactly how you feel about this issue.
Stand up and be counted. Because Russ is asking you to do so…and because it is the right thing to do.

What a wonderful candidate he would make for preznit.
What a shame, the other idiots get to stumble around the issues for two years without his example spurring them, and us, towards the country we need to be.
Consider the VP slot, Russ. At least be the VP.
It’s lunch time with Arianna.
“So, instead of hammering the president and the GOP for the war, we are facing the grim prospect of candidates like Edwards and Joe Biden and Chris Dodd and especially Hillary Clinton back on their heels, trying to explain and justify their pro-war votes. Hillary has taken so many different positions on the war, her rationalizations are already making “I actually voted for it before I voted against it” sound downright unequivocal.”
Arianna: One of the five smartest living I persons I can think of.
Russ has said he is not running. Can we draft him? I totally agree, Sen. Feingold would make an excellent President. He would certainly “restore honor” to the office. (Unlike that snivelling, little frat boy who actually made that promise.)
Russ needs to borrow my rubber mallet.
Knock some sense into these people.
I read the obit for Leo T McCarthy in today’s LA Times, and thought ‘another example of “San Francisco values”‘ – he married his college sweetheart, and when he working in Sacramento (state legislature, and three terms as lt governor), he drove home to his family on a lot of nights.
I just called my Senator (McCain).
After letting
me say my piecegive them an earful*, his office said “Thank you.”–MarkusQ
*E.g. “I’m calling in the hopes that he will back down on the escalation as smoothly as he did on the torture bill” and I went on from there.
I wrote to both my senators today. Of course, since I am from South Carolina, it won’t make a bit of difference but it made me feel like I was doing my part. If you live in a state where it DOES matter, please write on behalf of your blue friends stuck in red states.
P J Evans @ 8
I remember Leo McCarthy. I voted for him several times. A good man.
did do. can’t do much with one of our senators, he says no and votes yes. but he won’t be around much longer
I just called my Senators. One is Voinovich. I wonder if he ever knows about the phone messages his office receives.
okay, enough of the multi screen induced giddiness -
Christy – took your advice yesterday – went ot Post Office, picked up 200 Post Cards, filled them out by hand with a little help -
“We’re The Decider”
“We Spoke on November 7th !”
“Troops Home Now !”
taking cards back to P.O. today to ask fellow citizens to sign, provide contact # and watch me mail to Senators Cornyn & Hutchison and TRMPAC Monekyboy John Carter ; )
will report back later
I just phoned both Senators, and 14 of my 52 elected reps. Before the day is out I will call every last one of them. I am fed up with the leadership going along to get along. When will the insanity end?
Quick note on donations: Pay Pal allows business accounts to add “Subscription” buttons at no additional charge. I don’t know if we can fill in the amount, or if it needs to be preset, but it would be a relatively painless way to add ongoing contributions to the mix. Just a thought…
My senators are Schumer and Clinton, and I will be writing them both.
AP wire story at LA Times:
Officials: Iranian Envoy Seized in Iraq
By QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA, Associated Press Writer
9:38 AM PST, February 6, 2007
BAGHDAD, Iraq — Gunmen wearing Iraqi army uniforms seized an Iranian diplomat as he drove through central Baghdad, officials said Tuesday. Iran said it held the United States responsible for the diplomat’s “safety and life.”
One Iraqi government official said the Iranian diplomat was detained Sunday by an Iraqi army unit that reports directly to the U.S. military. A military spokesman denied any U.S. troops or Iraqis that report to them were involved.
“We’ve checked with our units and it was not an MNF-I (Multi-National Forces – Iraq) unit that participated in that event,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a U.S. military spokesman.
Just what Iraq needed: a Diplomatic Incident involving Iran. And possibly the US. It won’t matter what we say, because the locals in both countries won’t believe we’re not involved.
PJ at 17 — Oh, lovely. Just when you think it can’t get worse…
I will do my part also,in spite of the fact that it means calling Lieberman. I am afraid that no matter how many constituents he hears from on this issue, he won’t change his views one iota. He’s safe for the next 6 years, to the everlasting sorrow of Lamont supporters.

I have to agree with Russ on this whole sordid affair. If the most non-binding watered-down bill can’t survive a filibuster we may as well bring forward full, honest bills for an up or down vote and continuously let Republic party members filibuster them. It is time for our representatives to begin representing the people and NOT Bush. And Democrats need to stop being so afraid of offending the white house & Republic Senators.
I keep a list some of the personal email addresses of many of Kansas’ pols, (for a short stint I managed a davidvgoliath US Congressional campaign here, so I gained some unusual access.)
We’ll send a note off to them all, but I must add that, among the circle of activists I have teamed with, we have NEVER received an acceptable return response from ANY of the Republicans, except for form letters that deferred away from the issue or never even mentioned it.
But we still encourage everyone to contact their lawmakers, and hopefully this time around, even the R’s will have to respond.
It would be an interesting follow-up, write to both partys’ members and see how they respond, maybe some of us can post some of that response mail here.
I still have a copy of a letter from an Iowa congressman, in response to a query about election reform, and the return letter doesn’t ever mention election reform, it just repeats that candidate’s regular talking points…
More proof of how out of touch with the street-level our lawmakers have become.
Russ is great, seems like a pretty tough guy for a peace-wimp. We need more of those.
cbl — oh, you have become a Gabbly hardcore user now, haven’t you? ;-)
oh yeah momma! I’m a lean mean multi tasking machine !
off to the post office(s) will call if I need bail
PS I’m also a peace-wimp. I meant that in a complimentary fashion…
Brown, Voinovich, and Tiberi–done!
I also added a word about acting to prevent any preemptive military action against Iran and renewing diplomatic initiatives.
cbl, I love your postcard idea!
recall some other hippie dude talkin’ something about the meek and inheriting . . .
really, I’m goin’ now : )
thank you christy.
the personal cost of the war was really brought home to me the weekend before last when i went down to DC for the anti-war rally.
on the train from the baltimore airport i sat with a mother of military families speak out. her son (now in germany) had been to iraq and was injured twice (his vehicle was blown up twice – he must have a very dangerous job). luckily he was able to recover from his injuries, but his best friend died while beside him. his unit is going back to iraq, but he had a temporary delay since his wife has cancer (it’s not know if she will survive).
looks like he will have to go back regardless, especially if the escalation happens (as it appears is happening).
she told me that it’s very black and white to her. for every congressmember who doesn’t try to stop the escalation and bring the troops home is putting her son in danger, risk his life – for no good reason.
i wish i could do her story justice. it was so sobering and touching… i wasn’t able to control the tears by the time we got to DC.
she’s been doing everything she can – has worked with cindy sheehan from the early days and was recently arrested for an act of civil disobediance in DC (i think it was military families speak out and the gold star families).
anyway. please firepups, make the call (or send the letters) make them for her son john, and every other person who’s life is at risk. do it for them. thank you.
OMG cbl, two Gabblys at a time? My head is exploding already! I’d rather hang with the FDL Gabblers tyvm
http://gabbly.com/firedoglake.com c’mon down… :)
Russ is right, and I’ve already asked Levin to modify his resolution to ask for a change to the AUMF-Iraq’s terms, along with denying funding to surge and anything on Iran.
But the problem remains our thin to non-existent majority in the Senate. Until we make it extremely uncomfortable for a majority of Republican Senators to continue to vote to support a failed president, it doesn’t matter what resolution we put up (as a useless non-binding reprimand showed already).
We have to identify the ones who are leaners, and pound on them with a campaign, the ones whose races are hanging by a thread and then cuff them up for supporting the war.
I have been calling and writing to my jerk congresscritter Eliot Engel for years. What a pathetic excuse for a representative. Today they told me he changed his mind about Iraq… hahaha Why didn’t he listen to me, us for the last 4 yrs?
Because these congresscritters are useless jerks… most of them.
Hillary and Shumer should be recycled as weather vanes. What a waste.
“risk his life – for no good reason”
The core of our discontent…
MarkusQ @ 9
What an awesome way to start the conversation with McCain’s office!
I’m not even sure what to say to Levin at this point. I’m glad he’s trying to do something (even if it’s a non-binding resolution – if they can get 60-70 votes for it, getting these Republicans on record opposing Bush, therefore making it far less likely McCain’s plan will pass). I wish Levin and Feingold could agree to support each others resolutions.
Remember that stuff about not selling the prez short? That he really wasn’t a dummie. I don’t hear much of that anymore.
And if George has (is) been a dumbell on Iraq, and the Mideast in general, what does that make Hill?
Watching C-Span and Paul Bremer. It seems that the Republicans are bending over backwards to absolve Bremer of any possible responsibility for any of the missing billions. It seems that they have no real desire to provide accountability for the money. Figures, but it’s sickening to watch nonetheless.
DefJef @ 32
Not bad. ;0)
I want to punish some members of my party (Dems).
I have made the calls. Thanks for the information and thanks for all the good work from FDL.
My Senator is Russ Feingold and Senator Kohl.
I am so glad he is my Senator from Wisconsin.
He always answers all my letters when I write to him. I wish he would run for President.
My idiot Rep. is Arrogant Sensenbrenner.
I just got a letter from him stating that Bush did nothing wrong that deserves Impeachment. He is going to get another letter back that Bush, Cheney, and his Admin. need to be impeached.
GIVE THEM HELL SENATOR RUSS FEINGOLD!!!!!
What happened with the Iraq resolution in the Senate was completely predictable. Biden, Hagel, and Levin put out a weak, non-binding text containing a lot of compromise language that isn’t very realistic (closing the borders, training the fictional Iraqi army, etc.). This is countered by Warner with an even weaker and more pro-Bush version. Warner and Levin compromise on the compromise. Meanwhile Mitch McConnell works the parliamentary angle with cloture, knowing that even backers of the resolutions like Hagel and Warner will vote party line to support filibusters of their own resolutions.
McConnell’s plan is a simple one. He wants a variety of resolutions. He wants them by the bushel because each one will dilute the impact of a single up or down vote on the escalation. It will turn into “they voted for it before they voted against it.”
This epitomizes the IOKIYAR philosophy. When Republicans were in control, all they wanted was up or down votes. Now that they are in the minority it’s the last thing they want. Yes, this is hypocrisy but we are talking Republicans here.
As for the Democrats, they should get the biggest appropriations bill they can find, add binding non-escalation language to it, dare the Reupublicans to block it, and drop it in Bush’s lap to veto. He very well may if he doesn’t write a signing statement saying he will ignore what he wants to ignore but at least this way the Republicans will be exactly where they don’t want to be: on the record either supporting escalation or opposed to it.
Hillary, I believe, lacks the spontaneity gene.
I phoned Senators Obama and Durbin and just got off the phone with Rep. Manzullo’s office. They said he supports the war, when I asked why, they offered to send a letter stating his position. I’ve already received that one. I asked the staffer wasn’t he concerned about the war? He said yes, but he couldn’t do anything about it.
carmen @ 36
Bremer is another waste. And you know, while I realize this is OT, I HAVE to say it…
Why is it we could “secure” the oil fields and the oil ministry at the time of the invasion, but we couldn’t “plan” for ongoing security in the provinces? YET, we could still build the WORLD’S largest embassy amid the lack of security. Oh, and let’s not forget, THAT building was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
Bremer is a shining example of how NOT to conduct a rebuilding effort. Who is responsible for completing the embassy on time and under budget? We don’t hear who accomplished that feat. Maybe THEY should have been put in charge of rebuilding. (If it turns out to have been Bremer, I want his head on a platter for not understanding what is REALLY important.)
Do I hear “priorities?” (sigh)

I was an intern for McCarthy when I was a student at CSUS. My job was to answer the mail and help people with their problems. I was assigned to farm worker and senior citizen issues, and I was never told to do anything political. Everything was about service.
Lt. Governer McCarthy believed in government in the best sense. He was a true public servant.
Took a bit of time, but I emailed every single senator who is responsible for closing down debate on the most important event in our lifetimes. They are a disgrace and, with their willingness to keep sending our boys and girls to their deaths no questions asked, the blood is on their hands, too. They own this death and carnage. Every. single. one. of. them.
I feel like the DLC is attempting to put me in a straight-jacket. Am I paranoid?
Here’s a brief item appearing on ThinkProgress:
My favorite McCarthys. Leo and Gene. Oh Leo.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 42
Marvelous! Plus the earlier “recycled as weathervanes” jibe. Those are quips that I definitely will be pretending are original with me, later…
Thanks so much everyone for making calls and sending letters and faxes. You guys ROCK!
Called Burr and Dole.
Some in my party, the Democratic party, have been very politically naughty.
thanks for the nudge to write to MY rep and MY senators.
Unfortunately, I know where my letter to Joe LIEberman will wind up.
I live in MA and trust all my CongressCritters to “do the right thing” — I spoze I should really call and harangue them “WHY AREN’T YOU AS BALLSY AS FEINGOLD???”
Republicans have to absolve Bremer. He was their boy. His disasters are their disasters so they will avoid at all costs tying him to his disasters.
Bremer dissolved the Iraqi army creating a power vacuum from which the security situation never recovered.
He pursued de-Baathification essentially destroying what was left of the civil administration.
With no civil or military authority is it a surprise that Iraq collapsed into chaos.
Losing $8 billion was just icing on the cake of a total fiasco.
When someone makes such catastrophic mistakes, there really is nothing else to do but award them a medal and hope they drive off a cliff.
the antithesis @ 54
Send a copy of your letter to a local paper or two. See if they’ll print it as an op/ed, or if you can reword it slightly so it looks like an LTE. It’s worth a try to see if you can get more of your fellow citizens to speak out to Sen. Lieberman.
ROFL – I just got an email from Levin asking me to contribute to his 2008 re-election campaign.
Now I have more to add to my letter to him. “I’d be happy to support you if you will take even more bold actions toward ending this war, Senator.”
Cheney and the neocon Mafia are charging full steam ahead while the Democrats dither and equivocate. I, for one, am not pleased with Reid’s leadership skills, nor his public face. Would you follow him into battle? Durbin? It’s like Daschle refitted and on v*lium. Now, turn around…would you follow Feingold? Murtha? I would. Hell, Pelosi’s far more of a warrior than the Senate “leadership”.
And yes, I know the majority in the Senate is slim to non-existent. But I still have the same criticism. You can’t fight bulldozers with hula-hoops.
Greetings.
has there been any discussion of a potential Jeffords in the republican party, to counter Lieberman?
Rahm, Hillary, Joe L., and Mary L. you have been very bad boys and girls.
The United States of America needs Russ Feingold as President.
defjef sez:
They wouldn’t be suitable – they would never want to point in ANY direction for fear of offending some past or future wind from another direction!
Oh yeah. Over at TPM, they’re quoting Arlen as saying it was ‘a staffer’ who put that provision about the US Attorneys in the bill, and he didn’t know about it until the thing blew up in his face.
Yeah, right.
It seems the GOoPers have trouble with their staffers secretly doing things to bills, things that just happen to benefit Shrub and Darth. Can we say ‘lack of oversight’ here? Or is it simple
stupidityingenuousness at work?I can’t wait for (Joe)Bama to speak and act with the clarity and courage of Senator Feingold… ha!
So many chances to use his position as media darling, man of principle, so little action.
Don’t be gulled, no support for this DLC stalking horse!

It might not be the issue presumed to be earlier. When the Senate voted on operating rules a couple of weeks ago, they agreed the majority in place at the start of the session remains in place for the entire session. So, even if Holy Joe gets on his high horse and caucuses with the `pugs, it won’t change majority control of committees.
And thanks Marshall Wittman and the DLC for all the impotence you have injected into the Democratic party. Yeah, thanks a lot.
SharonRB — you here? Check your email. ;-)

i’ve asked my senators to support feingold.
we can ask our reps to support jim mcgovern (my rep)’s bill H. R. 746, “The Safe and Orderly Withdrawal from Iraq Act. here’s his statement.
there’s lots of representatives who’ve already signed on as co-sponsors. if yours is one of them, it doesn’t hurt to thank them.
MarkusQ @ 9
Now THAT is classic!
Russ is right.
He said one of the main reasons he didn’t want to run was so that he can focus his energies on the Senate. I’m glad he pulled his hat out of the ring so that he can focus on vital immediate issues like this and not be accused of grandstanding. I can’t thank him enough for what he is doing today- it is exactly the right response. And no D donor/consultant can tell him if you do this you get no money for prez campaign. While he has done many things that would get my vote for prez, we need him where he is. Obama deserves kudos (and will make out well)for addressing ending the war even tho he’s in a prez campaign, but Russ can devote all his energy to ending it. Also- I’m not sure Russ would want to be Veep.
And thank you Christy for this Public Service message!
montag,
hmm , thanks.
can he be impeached or recalled?

I called Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Sen John Kerry (D-MA).
Lynch’s office is being a little cagey about Lynch’s position on the esclalation. They were willing to send an email describing his position. I asked if they would call me back.
As you know, Kennedy is against the escalation and will bring it to the Seante floor for a debate and a vote. HIs website has not yet posted his position on the issue: they have a new office manager.
Kerry’s office does not answer… after four attempts.

It does seem the ‘best’ are steering clear. To what end?
JudeanPeople’sFront @ 77
No provision for such in CT. Also, if he vacates Gov Jody Rell(R) gets to appoint replacement.
Just wrote to Durbin:
I’m writing to ask for your support of a binding resolution opposing Bush’s foolish and hopeless escalation in Iraq.
Compromise has been tried in the non-binding Biden, Hagel, and Levin Resolution. It was tried again in the even weaker Levin, Warner Resolution. The worth of these efforts was shown when both Hagel and Warner backed filibustering what was essentially their own resolution.
Major appropriations bills are coming up and I urge that you attach amendments with the strongest possible language saying no to a policy of a President whose popularity and credibility are in the pits, a policy that 70% of Americans reject and only 12% approve. 4 years of failure do not justify another double down, last gasp chance. Get us out of Iraq, Mr. Durbin, get us out of Iraq now.
Kathy A @ 40
I adore Feingold. Have had my eye on him for some time. He has real integrity and real convictions. No Dems would get near him when he introduced the resolution to censure the president. What a bunch of pansies. Everything he has said and every position he has taken with regard to the war has been absolutely on target. Shame on all Dems who distanced themselves from him for standing up for what is right, as they cowered before the Fox spin machine. For shame, spineless Dems! May you rue the day.
In OVP-related news, there is this from FAS’s Secrecy Project:
Aftergood goes on to write that no answer has yet been received from Abu’s office.
No surprise there. Maybe DoJ’s just hoping the ISOO will simply go away, since the OVP, from the above, has already told ISOO to go Cheney themselves….
Teresa @ 10
Yes, I hear you. I’m from SC, too. Same deal. I’m going to let them know that if they think sticking with the prez is going to win them political points, they are being dangerously shortsighted.
selise @ 73
We are fortunate to have folks like McGovern, Olver, Frank, and others. Stephen Lynch is not always on the same team. His district may be more pro-war than the rest. I called his office and they would not disclose his position on the esclation. They offered an email and a call back. I took the call back.
Regardless I do not understand why any Representative would vote for an escalation and another $249 Billion to extend the death and carnage of our young people, Iraqi civilians, and further bankrupt our treasury.
Teresa @

Teresa, as I said in a post yesterday, it DOES make a difference — maybe even more in a Senate office that’s not used to hearing that point of view.
Pat yourself on the back, and get everyone you can to write to those same, pig-headed [sorry, pigs] Senators to let them know that “stay the course” is NOT okay.
Many thanks to you.

A voice in the wilderness can’t get ‘er done, but together we can exert enough pressure to get them to stand the FUCK up and do what’s right, which is bring them home now.
All of them. Now.
I emailed Webb this time, since I called twice last week. I’m asking him to try to get through the thick skulls of his colleagues that the thing that gets them painted as “weak” is not opposing military actions, but failing to stand up for what they believe in, and what their supporters believe in.
I’ll call Warner again as soon as I think I can keep it civil.

And they will beat their weather-vanes into plough-shares…
Obama hears the call in the Senate, and Pat Murphy and Mike Thompson hear it in the House: http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..25716/0647
They are throwing down!

Or more to the point, why they would greet this “plan” with anything but incredulous stares. The people voted to end this war; the fact that the president is proposing to do the exact opposite doesn’t mean we should “compromise” and continue it, it means we should ignore his distraction and end the war.
Christy – looks like the issue was fixed. I did my refresh from home, and that didn’t fix it. Looks like the mods did something to make it work now. Thanks!
Got mine – Obama, Durbin and Kirk.
Long hold queue at Clinton’s office, and then the staffer tried to cut me off. But I had to get in a reference to her Fox interview where she associated Iraq with 9/11.
She better moderate that “blog” of hers pretty carefully.
I made my calls. Senator Feinstein’s office is not particularly forthcoming though “on record against a surge.” She has “no comment” on Iran “as yet.” (yea yea)
Senator Boxer is opposed to escalation and opposed to funding for same. She is in favor of re-deploying troops in Iraq within six months.
As to Iran, she is “formulating” her opinion and my “message” opposing activity in that area is being passed on to her. I’ll be curious to see how she responds to e-mail.
I’m thinking of calling Russ Feingold’s office to cheer him on. I have adored his politics since I don’t know when. He’s amazing. I wish there were more like him.

Graham is up in 08. Every senator, even Graham, even Ted Stevens up in 08 has to be worried about this issue. The situation is going to get worse and worse, and it’s important that even senators like Graham know that there is no support for this war.

Obama, Thompson and Murphy Introduce Plan to De-Escalate and End the War in Iraq
Senator Barack Obama Along With Congressmen Mike Thompson and Patrick Murphy Introduced Legislation That Stops President Bush’s Escalation and Sets a Timeline for Redeployment From Iraq
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Congressman Patrick Murphy (D-PA) called for a stop to President Bush’s escalation in Iraq and for an end to the war. At a press conference in the U.S. Capitol, Senator Obama and Reps. Thompson and Murphy discussed the Iraq War De-Escalation Act of 2007 – legislation they introduced in the Senate and the House which puts forward a plan to stop the recent escalation in forces and a plan to redeploy American troops from Iraq starting May 1, 2007. Senator Obama introduced the bill in the Senate and Reps. Thompson and Murphy introduced the companion legislation in the House of Representatives. Congressman Thompson is a Vietnam Veteran and a former U.S. Army staff sergeant/platoon leader with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and Congressman Murphy is a former U.S. Army Captain and Iraq war veteran.
“Our troops have preformed brilliantly in Iraq, but no amount of American soldiers can solve the political differences at the heart of somebody else’s civil war,” Senator Obama said. “That’s why our plan not only stops the escalation of this war, but begins a phased redeployment that can pressure the Iraqis to finally reach a political settlement and brings all U.S. combat troops home by March of next year.”

Called Bingaman’s office. He’s gotten several calls on this subject today.
epu but still for the record, called from NZ to the Kansas senators, Brownback and Roberts. Just wanted them to have to put a tick by opposing the war and the escalation. Maybe someday those will begin to accumulate so that they notice them.
so if Feingold already has legislation proposed to redeploy, why the new bill from Obama? it’s nice that he’s for ending the war, but doesn’t this confuse things somewhat?
Feingold is my hero, I swear. I was bouncing off the walls after hearing him tell the other Dems to quite waffling on this issue. I just wish more of the politicians would be as outspoken as Feingold.
Unfortunately, I’m a Yankee liberal Jew in the buckle of the bible belt/fascist land (i.e. South Carolina). I wrote to every Senate & House member in the state about the war a few weeks ago. DeMint now sends me stupid republican agenda pushing emails. Thank God Gmail has filters!
every time i call my reps i get an automated response or some low-level aide who says my message will be given to my rep! its disheartening to me. but still i call to remind them at least i’m paying attention to them.
Wahhhhhh i wish russ would reconsider running as a president! but a man with any principles has nooooooo chance of winning the WH!
“Russ needs to borrow my rubber mallet.
Knock some sense into these people.”
We, the people, are the rubber mallet propelled by the driving force of the spirit of the time.
Hi Christy,
When I first started blogging back in Feb 2005 I assumed that my congress critters would actually listen to me. Wow, what a wake-up call I got.
John Cornyn and Kay Baley Hutchison are so far right-wing instead of praying before they go to bed they recite George Dubya’s latest talking points.
I, myself, had wished Sen. Russ Feingold had run for President. I believe he’s a good man.
What’s a fella to do, to help out, living in the red state of Texas?
