Sally@117 - Don’t you think Martha Stewart’s name recognition/fame was largely responsible for the intensity of the coverage? The big difference between Stewart and Ken Lay is that the public was familiar with Martha Stewart. BTW, Mr. Comey went to the DOJ in DC and appointed Fitz to Plamegate, and he at least refused to sign off on the 45-day renewal of the warrantless wiretapping. Maybe he made too much out of the Martha Stewart deal, but anybody trying to put the brakes on this administration deserves some kudos, IMO.

That so rocks that you may have a good contact. I’m so appreciative.

I put a lot of heart and soul into this man when he was a homeless kid, and I’m rooting for him now, even if there are no guarantees in life.

I respect what you’re doing Pach… the guy is lucky he has your support. Thanks for NOT labeling him. Calling him an ex-con is an additional negative that he doesn’t need hanging over his head.

He’s a guy who made a mistake and, with support and guidance from people who care, he can work his way back into a normal life. Is there such a thing as a normal life in this sick world we live in? I doubt it, but I will send him positive energy when he pops into my thoughts.

Please keep us informed.

This thread will close in another day, but my soon to be released friend will likely read it upon release, and may even stop by himself in the comment threads from a library computer once in a while to say hello, keep people updated and to thank them.

Rumi @ 106, you’re welcome. And Mr. Comey had a big role in setting Martha up for punishment and in publicizing it all. After the trial, the female lead prosecutor took a job with a high-powered firm and Mr. Comey went on to better (more monetarily rewarding) things. Sheesh.

Drug Busts=Jim Crow by Ira Glasser

The fact is, just as Jim Crow laws were a successor system to slavery, so drug prohibition has been a successor to Jim Crow laws in targeting blacks, removing them from civil society and then denying them the right to vote while using their bodies to enhance white political power. Drug prohibition is now the last significant instance of legalized racial discrimination in America.

That many liberals have been at best timid in opposing the drug war and at worst accomplices to its continued escalation is, in light of the racial politics of drug prohibition, a special outrage. It is also politically self-destructive, serving to keep in power white conservatives opposed to everything liberals stand for. Liberals especially, therefore, need to consider attacking the premises upon which this edifice of racial subjugation is based. If they do not, who will?

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other members of the Democratic leadership have effectively embargoed major crime or drug policy legislation for the next two years, to avoid looking soft on crime in the 2008 election.” A Change in the Weather The Los Angeles City Beat, 02-01-07

for Jim Corw Democrats politics trumps policy.

I used to teach in max security prisons for men for about 10 years. My family and I have been volunteers at Indiana State Prison for almost 30 years now. In 2004, I published a book entitled Conversations, in which around two dozen inmates of ISP write about themselves and their experiences with education. By the way, we have one of our guys in Crown Point who was just released. He’s a licensed barber and a haz-mat worker. If anyone wants to offer a job in Crown Point, let me know. Isn’t it time for a web page for ex-cons and their supporters?
