(Huge thank you to Kathryn in MA for sending along this adorable picture.)
– Our Blue America guest this weekend will be Charlie Brown from the CA-04. Please stop by and chat with Charlie at 11:00 am PT/2:00 pm ET. Thanks, Howie — can't wait!
– Crooks and Liars has an hilarious Daily Show clip, skewering the "Incredibly Awkward Situation Room." Too funny.
– Atrios points out that another $245 billion dollars is being poured down Bush's hole. Erm…that didn't come out right, did it?
– Well, this is good to know: "The Intelligence Community judges that the term "civil war" does not adequately capture the complexity of the conflict in Iraq, which includes extensive Shia-on-Shia violence, al-Qa’ida and Sunni insurgent attacks on Coalition forces, and widespread criminally motivated violence. Nonetheless, the term "civil war" accurately describes key elements of the Iraqi conflict, including the hardening of ethno-sectarian identities, a sea change in the character of the violence, ethno-sectarian mobilization, and population displacements…." Kind of makes the term F.U.B.A.R. seem a little quaint, doesn't it?
Gee, good thing the President wants to throw more soldiers at the increasingly horrific and out of control problem, huh? Because that's worked SO well thus far…well, not so much. Taylor has so much more. As does Juan Cole.
– The Muck has some quotes from the Hadley presser this afternoon. I watched part of it on C-Span, and the quote from the seemingly intellectually constipated Hadley that stuck in my mind was this: "the sectarian violence in Iraq has seemingly increased, and we need to get control of that." Um…yes, that would appear to be the case Mr. I Can't Brief Without My Note Cards. Jeebus, this one from the United States National Security Advisor really gets to the heart of why the Bush Administration's policies in Iraq have such long-term suckitude: "One of the things you should conclude from this NIE," Hadley said, "is the best plan is to have this plan succeed." Your national security policy, based on an Emily Dickenson poem. Great. Just great.
– The Young Turks had a fantastic interview with Sen. Russ Feingold on Wednesday, and they've got the whole thing up online if you missed it. It is well worth the listen.
– I don't know what it is about this post, but TBogg just never fails to make me laugh out loud.
– Jeralyn has some thoughts about The Scooter and Shrub Bus Tour.
– Skippy, just because.
– Jerome Armstrong over at MyDD has a campaigning update from the DNC winter meeting.
– Pam has some snazzy new digs. And First Draft has a new do as well. Nice!
– Poputonian, over at Digby's, manages to work the words Cheney, LaRouche and bedfellow into a single post. Be very afraid.
– Will Bunch is trying to break my heart with this picture.
– Wolcott gets to the bottom of "Play That Funky Music" Biden's gaffe — or not-so-gaffe — as the case may or may not be, dispatching the minor kerfuffle with the trademark Wolcott brevity of snark. Boo-yah!

Well Hell,

My Lady doth surf the web prodigiously!
“Coming to a country over there — Xtreeme Civil War!”
Think I could get a job messaging for this administration?
Why are people, supposedly sensible people, not the bottom of the barrel type, still enabling thises goofs?
I mean really.
The plan will work because it has to work? Who runs a country by magic thinking?
Bush’s plan should go forward because it’s the only one that even pretends a win can be pulled out of Iraq?
It’s over. You broke it, yes, but if we don’t get you out of there you’re in danger of wrecking the whole goddamn Pottery Barn!

Friday!
That is an unfairly cute photo.
Christy,
Just happened to have watched the Daily Show clip a few minutes ago. It was funny and I really appreciated Ms. Gephardt and Stweart’s exchange. What is like to have a politician for a father? Was he born that way? The nails all got hit on the head with that video.
Yo! Go Colts!
Consortium News, which IMHO tends to be a little alarmist, had a good piece I read about how Bush is hiding the ball with Iran…putting all the pieces in place denying everything until…Anschluss anyone?

“The Intelligence Community judges that the term “civil war” does not adequately capture the complexity of the conflict in Iraq,…”
Translation for SecDef Gates: Just because you have pneumonia and the flu doesn’t mean you don’t have pneumonia. And just because there’s more going on there than a civil war doesn’t mean “civil war” isn’t accurate.
“Almost four years into a war that should never have been fought in the first place, with all the evidence that anyone could ask for pointing to the fact that things are getting worse rather than better, senators are trying to muster the will to support a non-binding expression of mild distaste for President Bush’s troop surge fantasy.”
“Non-binding resolutions are the political equivalent of room-temperature tap water served up for toasts at a wedding reception. They beg the question: What the hell are these people thinking?”
Talk about not in touch:
Lawmakers square off on climate report
WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite a strongly worded global warming report from the world’s top climate scientists, the Bush administration expressed continued opposition Friday to mandatory reductions in heat-trapping “greenhouse” gases.
Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman warned against “unintended consequences” — including job losses — that he said might result if the government requires economy-wide caps on carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels.
‘Unintended consequences’ like large areas being flooded when sea level goes up?
Like the guys who’ve been telling us it isn’t real suddenly finding themselves in unemployment lines?
Like areas becoming too hot and dry for the farms they now have?
Like a whole lot of people dying, because we’ve screwed the ecology of the entire world?
Like completely new industries arising to provide pollution controls, with jobs that never existed before?

Latest from The Hill:
Clinton Promises to End War if Elected
WASHINGTON Feb 2, 2007 (AP)— Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday she would not have attacked Iraq if she were president in 2002 and would end the war if elected, as she tried to blunt rivals like John Edwards who are stoking anti-war passions in the Democratic Party.
“Believe me, I understand the frustration and the outrage,” Clinton said in a speech to the Democratic National Committee meeting that brought the party’s nine White House hopefuls together for the first time.

OTOH:
Calling Iran a danger to the U.S. and one of Israel’s greatest threats, U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday no option can be taken off the table when dealing with that nation.
“U.S. policy must be clear and unequivocal: We cannot, we should not, we must not permit Iran to build or acquire nuclear weapons,” the Democrat told a crowd of Israel supporters. “In dealing with this threat … no option can be taken off the table.”
Clinton spoke at a Manhattan dinner held by the largest pro-Israel lobbying group in the U.S., the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Some 1,700 supporters applauded as she cited her efforts on Israel’s behalf….

I hope the pup was smart enough not to sass the FBI agents when they interviewed it.
From TPM:
Private Saudi citizens are giving millions of dollars to Sunni insurgents in Iraq and much of the money is used to buy weapons, including shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles, according to key Iraqi officials and others familiar with the flow of cash.
Saudi government officials deny that any money from their country is being sent to Iraqis fighting the government and the U.S.-led coalition.
But the U.S. Iraq Study Group report said Saudis are a source of funding for Sunni Arab insurgents. Several truck drivers interviewed by The Associated Press described carrying boxes of cash from Saudi Arabia into Iraq, money they said was headed for insurgents.
…
In one recent case, an Iraqi official said $25 million in Saudi money went to a top Iraqi Sunni cleric and was used to buy weapons, including Strela, a Russian shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missile. The missiles were purchased from someone in Romania, apparently through the black market, he said.
So the Saudi Sunni are arming the Iraqi Sunni, who are killing about 80% of our soldiers. The Saudis get a pass. But the Iranian Shia, who are arming the Iraqi Shia, who kill about 20% of our soldiers, get irradiated this April? What a deal…
Ed*ard Teller @ 26
When I see stuff like this I question whether Senator Clinton if elected prez would be a seeker of a fair and just settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This conflict is at the core of Arab distaste for America and its ham-handed treatment of the situation.
ET @ 26:
I read that excerpt at Digby’s place and then went over to Hillary’s e-mail page and gave her a piece of my mind. She may be the ‘front runner’ at this point, but she’s not winning my vote. (And, in related news, saw the first ‘Hillary in 2008′ sticker this morning.)

There will never be peace in the Middle East without a settlement of the Palestinian ‘question’. If it was right for Israel to be given a homeland in 1948, and I believe it was, then it is right that the Palestinians be granted a home of their own now.

There will never be peace in the Middle East, period, I fear. Would the granting of a truly independent Palestinian state suffice to effectively neutralize the mutual/multi-way hair-trigger hatreds?
I am skeptical. We do have, to be fair, though, the example of Northern Ireland, I suppose. I never thought they’d give up the gun.
Dunno.

Y’know, when Florida’s stupid enough to elect Jeb’s grandson as governor, that kid is going to plead with the Feds for $10 trillion to build a sea wall around the state.
The bill should go to Bodman, et al.
Come to think of it, if the Feds billed every stupid idea to the people who thought of them in the first place, we’d be in a budget surplus and the Washington elite would be dumpster-diving for McDonalds leftovers….

The impression here is we have to try.
In case it hasn’t been posted yet, the New York Times did the right thing today, correcting its erroneous statement yesterday about Judith Miller being under investigation by Fitzgerald in a case unrelated to the Libby trial. It will be interesting to see if this tidbit makes it into the trial record on Monday, since Wells characterized the NYT as “very reputable”.
I did e-mail the two reporters on the story yesterday pointing them to this blog’s quote of what Fitzgerald said (”inaccurate”), and one of them was kind enough to send me a reply pointing out today’s correction.

Before Bush came in, there was no Iraq war, Iran was not the issue it has become, and the Palestinians and Israelis were kept busy talking by Presidents Carter and Clinton.
Let’s just not get to the point where we have to discuss the puppy’s head in a meatgrinder.
I’m about half-way through State of Denial. While I realize each of Woodward’s sources has his own agenda (as does Mr. Wurlitzer himself), the thing that strikes me is the manner in which Cheney cherry-picked the Iraq intelligence. It wasn’t so much a parallel intelligence apparatus he was setting up. Instead he comes across as an Inspector Clouseau with his own amateurish screening of raw NSA intercepts. His writing out the talking points for dealing with the press comes across similarly–he is controlling yet over-his-head. The irony, per State of Denial, is that the worst sin, in Bush’s mind, is for someone to be a micromanager. Cheney is one, and Rumsfeld was one in spades.

the Dickinson poem reminds me of “Success”,an Edna St.Vincent Millay poem I memorized in 7th grade:
Success is counted sweetest
by those who ne’re succeed
to comprehend a nectar

Not one of all the purple host
who took the flag today
can tell the definition
so clear of victory
As he defeated dying
on whose forbidden ear
the distant strains of triumph
break agonized and clear.

One argument I read that makes sense intuitively is that, by establishing an independent Palestine, the new citizens thereof would then have real skin in the game, they’d have something precious and tangible to (easily) lose. They’d have to get on with the mundane bidness of civics and lose the Victimhoom mantle.
I agree that it should be tried. Just worry that there are too many all-or-thing go-for-broke hotheads in the region. I don’t recall any IRA suicide bombers.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 36 I think this all started when she considered running from NY for the Senate. I am sure she was told by advisors, Schumer, Lieberman et al that she couldn’t win in NY without A*PAC support. (I think that advice was bs) Her first sign of good faith was the Marc Rich Pardon, then strong support for Iraq war, and now “I’ll nuke Iran if you want me to.” This will cost her the presidency,IMHO.

O/T- Joke I got from my jazz guitarist pal Robert Conti:
_____
A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper has cheated him out of ten million bucks.
His bookkeeper is deaf and cannot speak. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that a deaf bookkeeper would not hear anything that he might have to testify about in court.
When the Godfather goes to confront the bookkeeper about his missing $10 million, he brings along his attorney, who knows sign language.
The Godfather tells the lawyer, “Ask him where the 10 million bucks he embezzled from me is.”
The attorney, using sign language, asks the bookkeeper where the money is.
The bookkeeper signs back: “I don’t know what you are talking about.”
The attorney tells the Godfather: “He says he doesn’t know what you’re talking about.”
The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to the bookkeeper’s temple and says, “Ask him again!”
The attorney signs to the bookkeeper: “He’ll kill you if you don’t tell him!”
The bookkeeper signs back: “OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed in my cousin Enzo’s backyard in Queens !”
The Godfather asks the attorney: “Well, what’d he say?”
The attorney replies:
“He says you don’t have the fucking balls to pull the trigger.”
The polar bear pic was very sad indeed.

I’d suggest referring back to that academic article that showed that the most common thread in terrorism is that it is a response to military occupation. (I don’t have a link handy, but I could probably find it again.)
Long-running hatreds are generally overstated as a supposed motivation for war. Kinda like the wingnuts getting the cart before the horse and blaming our anger on “Bush hatred,” a lot of areas have different groups that don’t much like each other, but only flare up into major conflict over real grievances. If you have a real process for settling the grievances, you’ll probably have a generation who really hate each other and only a few who can’t abide by the resulting agreements, and with the next generation, the eternal hatred turns into people who can at least grudgingly live together unless they’re exploited by a demagogue. Northern Ireland isn’t an aberration.

The argument is being made that Hillary is an economic populist because of her suggestion that if she were elected prez she would take a portion of oil company profits and place them in some kind of environmental program. I would have to ask the Senator, since she has very close ties to the DLC, if she considers this a populist organization.

What’s your take on Libby’s efforts to have the grand jury tapes that will be played to the jury sealed, so there is no public access to the recordings themselves?
Libby: Don’t Release Grand Jury Tapes
My brief research on CD Circuit law suggests that although Walton has the discretion to do that, the strong presumption is to allow public access and that he has to find a strong countervailing public interest compelling their being sealed. What that public interest could be is not clear to me. Seems like the public interest would be to treat them like the rest of the trial exhibits — part of the public court record. After all, it’s not as if reporters won’t hear them played and report on them using their note taking skills (though no one is as good as you all at FDL!)
Any prediction as to what Walton will do and whether a sealing order would hold up on appeal?

My two cents worth:
(and originally, I had a lot to say but decided this might be better)
A people subjected to occupation by another country (sound familiar?) are not going to be overly friendly to the occupying force. All humans deserve humane, respectful treatment. This currently is not happening in the Israeli-Palestinian region.
This is not an easy conflict to resolve, but neither is it one that should be abandoned each time one side “slips” in its efforts. And finally, the U.S. needs to quit taking sides and be a fair brokeer. I fear that for the last 6 years, this has not happened and it is to our detriment. More to the point, it is to the detriment of those in the region.
