On a heavier note–what if Libby was trying to protect others and they all hung him out to dry…including Miller? If Miller’s stalling tactics were never really about Libby but were about someone else, a lot of what has been going on makes sense. Not that that protects Libby from any of the charges he now faces…since they are not actually about the leak itself.

If this theory is correct then Fitzgerald’s decision to simply prosecute on perjury is brilliant since he can start going after anyone who lied as the conspirators cop pleas…without caring whether they actually can be proved to have broken the 82 Act or not.

Of course, that theory would presuppose that all the players in the conspiracy have actually been deposed and committed perjury…which I’m beginning to suspect is not the case…so if Fitzgerald’s office starts deposing new players, that would be an indication that he is following that track.

Bush Directed Cheney To Counter War Critic

President Bush told the special prosecutor in the CIA leak case that he directed Vice President Dick Cheney to personally lead an effort to counter allegations made by former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV that his administration had misrepresented intelligence information to make the case to go to war with Iraq, according to people familiar with the president’s interview.

Bush also told federal prosecutors during his June 24, 2004, interview in the Oval Office that he had directed Cheney, as part of that broader effort, to disclose highly classified intelligence information that would not only defend his administration but also discredit Wilson, the sources said.

But Bush told investigators that he was unaware that Cheney had directed I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, the vice president’s chief of staff, to covertly leak the classified information to the media instead of releasing it to the public after undergoing the formal governmental declassification processes.

Bush also said during his interview with prosecutors that he had never directed anyone to disclose the identity of then-covert CIA officer Valerie Plame, Wilson’s wife. Bush said he had no information that Cheney had disclosed Plame’s identity or directed anyone else to do so.

Wow, this is a smoking gun! I don’t believe that I read this before you posted it here. Given what we now know about the scope of the disinformation and lying by this criminal administration to garner support for invading Iraq, Bush must have specifically ordered Cheney to undertake a campaign to discredit Joe Wilson because he knew Wilson was telling the truth.

I have assumed that Bush was behind the effort to discredit Wilson because it’s the kind of mean-spirited and unnecessary thing that he would do and I’ve never believed that anyone in his administration would have done it on their own.

The plot thickens, don’t it?

Later. It was quite the drama though. I think I developed a psychological Judy profile, though. At least a good working hypothesis. Brought me right back to my clinical diagnostic days.

What is up with the sexual innuendo wrt Judy/Libby and Judy/Chalabi? Is there any basis for it or is it just joking insults?

Maureen Dowd famously said that Judy had a “tropism” toward powerful men….I think I’m getting that mostly accurate. Presumably Mo would know, at least to some degree, having worked at the NYT with Judy. To what degree “tropism” implies sexual contact, who knows except the parties involved.

Maybe she was implying “trollopism”!
