I found this lovely photo of two white ibis on the Island Packet website — this is the newspaper that serves the Hilton Head area. Loved this shot — when we were on vacation, we had several white ibis that liked to wade in the inlet marsh area near our condo when the tide was partially in, picking out little crabs and minnows and oysters if they got really lucky. This photo brings back that salt air smell and the sound of the water lapping against the shore…and the calm of vacation. Take that deep breath with me and then exhale. Ahhhh. Just what I needed with my coffee this morning.

Thanks so much for your postings on the Libby trial, Christy.
I wonder if MTP will make any reference to the revelations in the trial on Thursday.
PS: I forgot to list YGM on the glossary.
we need our OWN talk show!
Morning all — getting ready to make some coffee here. Another cold, snowy in paraise. *g*
CBS FTN might be worth watching to see Jim Webb strangle Mitch McConnell.
It’s snowing pretty heavily here in Central Ohio. Strange after so many warm days in December and early January.
and thanks for the warning (not that I really needed it) to avoid Faux News Sunday
tiredfed @ 7
Oh yes! I’m sure he’ll hold his own against BOTH Repubs.
Redd, do you have any thoughts on the Libby team’s motion to quash Ari’s testimony? I thought it was kinda ballsy.
I predict Specter will be very chummy with (read: very afraid of) Webb but McConnell is an A**hole (capital A). I’m hoping for some fireworks. Methinks Mrs. Webb raised her boy not to countenace fools.
well, obviously Timmeh hasn’t chosen to disprove the WH Puppet Theory yet….
And Fox has found two conservative nuts for their Sun show….
Think I’ll listen to music.
So, LIEberman is pimping on Fox again, I see.
I guess David Broder didn’t get the memo wrt Lieberman being an Independent. I think we need to do something to break this Lieberman is a dem cycle.
DAVID BRODER: SYNDICATED COLUMNIST
Cross-party efforts give domestic agenda hope
Snowe and Alexander became ringleaders in two of the efforts to break down party barriers. Alexander teamed with Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, re-elected as an independent Democrat, as co-hosts of the new weekly Tuesday morning breakfasts for senators of both parties.

Well THAT would be uncomfortable for Pudge-face! Can he take the heat?
I spent a week at Hilton Head in the 70’s with the trade association I worked for at the time. My job required me to be at the meeting hall before everyone else, and thus the main thing I remember about Hilton Head is walking in the early morning dark on the paved trails through the hotel compound, keeping a sharp eye peeled for loose alligators, of which there were plenty.
Shout out to rumi, who doesn’t think like my guy-friend. He also basically said Webb was a political whore. He’s a former Marine but says he would vote for Hill and likes Nancy P. Go figger.
Rant over.
Oh, he thinks Nancy P. is hot. So go figger on that one, too.
mandrake @ 19
Ummm.. confession time – So do I. And Barbara Boxer.
tiredfed at 12 — I think it was as much putting on a show for the media and vouching the record as anything else. They have known that Fleischer was on the witness list for quite a while and didn’t file any motions in limine or make any other attempt to limit testimony until right before he was scheduled for trial. We have a great post on the immuniy issues involved coming up shortly from looseheadprop — who was nice enough to put something together for us while I caught back up with The Peanut this weekend.
jayt @ 20
Amen to that for both! (Don’t tell Mrs. retrin’).
mandrake @ 19
Well, I think so too, but probably not in the way he does. I loved the Luckovich cartoon on Bob Geiger’s site yesterday. I’d link to it, but I still don’t understand how to link in a comment.
Any advice?
CatStaff @ 17
HH is indeed lovely in its way, but the architectural aesthetics are a bit too controlled for my taste. Being an SC native, some of us are so used to tacky beaches and an “arrogantly shabby” Pawley’s Island-type of snobbery, we feel a bit uncomfortable with the aesthetic environment of HH.
Having said that, maybe we’re secretly just uncomfortable around the wealth of the residents and don’t want to admit our insecurities! I spent my honeymoon there, but it was unseasonably cold that May/June.
I think that was an omen, since my marriage didn’t work out!
I can hardly wait for lhp! Better Sunday Morning TV: MPT piece on David McCullough on John Adams (with McCullough himself adding commentary).
mandrake at 24 — It is a very controlled developmental environment, isn’t it, on Hilton Head? But I love the natural preservation planning they have put into the whole island — with so many undeveloped bird sanctuaries and walking trails and marsh areas. But it is absolutely amazing how much money is on that island — we took a drive through some of the new development areas in the Sea Pines section — and were amazed at the size and detail on so much of the newly constructed houses there.
OhioTex @ 23
Yes,
1. Copy your web address from the article you wish to link to.
2. Then go to FDL comments section and block (highlight) your link-word (where you want link to point to).
3. Hit the LINK button. A window will pop up where you can paste the link you copied from the article. It will prompt you with your link-word you have blocked (highlighted with your cursor).
4. Hit OK. That should do it.
tiredfed @ 12
Motion to Quash? When did that happen? I thought they wanted to bring in his Immunity Agreement but limit the Gov’t’s ability to rpovide the background and imetous for Ari to demand immunity? Did I miss something?
Thanks! Now let’s see if I can follow directions to link to the cartoon.
Wow, looks like it works!

Thank you – I could never figure that one out either.
Now I just gotta figure out where to store your comment….
Morning all. Cold here. Sure enjoyed watching the protest march yesterday on C-Span.

Sharkbabe…where are ya? We need a report on the day’s events.
OhioTex @ 4
It would be great television, watching him try to appear impartial, but I don’t think he will. Mostly because I don’t see him being able to get the image of Patrick Fitzgerald’s questioning out of his mind.
And Nancy Pelosi? Tres sexy. A smart woman is the sexiest thing on the planet.

was great to be there too. beautiful day. hope our congress was listening.
Thanks Twolf
I read that article when it came out. For some reason people think I will be interesting in articles like that and email them to me in great number. *g*
To clear up some terminology, they are not trying o quash Fliesher’s testimony. That would mean stopping him from tesifying at all.
They are trying to limit the redirect that the government can offer.
Here’s how it works:
1) gov’t puts witness on stand and questions about A, B, and C
2) defense is limited in it’s cross exam questions to topics A, B, and C.
However, even if the questions are so limited, you never know what else will come out in the answer, so topics D and E may get introduced during cross.
This is what judges are talking about when they say “you opened the door”. Once a question asked by you elecits and answer on a given topic, you opponent is now free to question on that topic.
Now back to Cross and redirect.
3) if on cross exam the questioner only askes about topic A and B, On redirect the questioner cannot ask an more questions about C, even though he could have asked all the questions his heart desired about C on direct.
Direct is the only “unlimited” (in quotes because there are actually all kinds of limitations, but they will only confuse this explanation) set of questions. Thereafter each side is limited to the topics that the witness testisied to in the preceeding round of questions.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 26
Yes, “controlled” is a good way to describe it. And it is indeed teaming with wealth (where does it all come from?) They definitely intended for HH to have a certain, non-touristy look and invested their substantial wealth towards that end.
But, as you say, it has many lovely natural attributes and I think the developers were very careful to prevent commercial venues from being ugly and distracting from the beauty of the natural environment (hence the khaki Burger Kings and such, I just love that!)
I’m glad you got to enjoy one of our lovelier islands. Don’t know if you’ve been to Charleston yet, but it has it’s own charm and distinction. I guess since I’m a history nut, I just love it.
Also, Beaufort and Savannah – Beaufort is my favorite, I think. Except for stinkin’ Joe Wilson. Oh well, I guess he has to represent the military interests since I think there’s navy base or something down there. I’m sure Marion in Savannah would know.
jayt @ 32
Highlight it and then cut and paste into Word. I’m an “author” now? ;)
I don’t know what kind of birds these are, but they have been hanging around all morning here…

OhioTex @ 29
Whee! Good job. I just love Bob Geiger.
mandrake at 38 — I love Beaufort. All the Southren charm and spanish moss-laden live oaks and marshgrass areas, but lots of art galleries and fabulous little boutique shops and mom and pop restaurants. And I think it is the marine base at Parris Island that probably factors in to the political representation. Love Savannah, too — but as much for the drive down as anything else, it’s lovely.
We haven’t done an extended vacation in Charleston yet — we’re waiting until The Peanut gets a bit older, to appreciate the architecture and the garden tours. *g*
More to my 37 above.
What Team Libby wants to do is intorduce on cross exam, the fact of Fleisher’s Immunity Agreement to impeach his credibilty (which is one of the few “new” topics permitted to be introduced on cross exam), but wants to prevent the government from introducing the reason why Ari wanted immunity — supposedly the Pincus article scared Ari and he was afraid of going to jail.
They are arguing that Ari’s fear couple with the Immunity Agreement(you don’t need immunity UNLESS you have criminal exposure–so be granting him Immunity both Ari and Fitz are agreeing that Ari might have committed a crime)
Would imply to the jury that Scooter committed a crime.
Me, I think it’s a specious argument. I’m kinda surprised they are goin to the trouble to brief it. I think I read somewhere that they are doing papaers on this over the weekend?
It’s not a strong enough theory to have to waste time and paper on IMHO
To selise @ 36, Wow you were there, I would have liked to have gone but no money and that many people would freak me out. Congress better be paying attention, and why the half measures of non-binding resolution?
NewsClues @ 35
That link between smart and sexy is important in Muslin culture too, according to Fatema Mernissi.
(Now that I know how to do this link thing, I can’t resist.)
I don’t want anyone to misunderstand me about my Nancy P. comment. (I think she is a lovely lady as well). I had been talking about my guy friend who also thinks Laura Ingraham is “smart and attractive” which irks me. Hence the “go figger” about him lusting for Nancy P.
Christy, emptywheel, Pachacutec, and of course, Jane, and Others whose names I don’t recall at the moment–
I so appreciate the work you do (and the accompanying photos!).
The Plame case is an obsession of mine, too, and *if* there is any justice in this country, this regime will topple and be thoroughly renounced by the people and *even* by the Congress.
As thanks for the bird pics, I thought you’d appreciate this delightful cockatoo love story:

looks like sandhill cranes
Just FYI everyone — LHP’s immunity piece is up.
I have a question for the lawyers here. Some of us need a clarification on what evidence/testimony can be used when a witness is called. I think it might fall into ‘exculpatory’, (if I have that right) and that application.
For instance, this hypothetical…
Rove testifies to statements made in emails. The emails have mixed content for various subjects as most email do. Some statements might point to Libby’s innocence (ha!…fat chance) but other content is damaging to either Libby, others or both and has an indirect influence in the trial’s progression. For discussion, let’s say it involves an illicit sexual affair that could have been used as leverage to control actions or cooperation during the leak and subsequent investigation? What if it is just that type but not related to the case and is in the text of an email that is used in court?
Does all of it apply to what has to be disclosed? Can all of it be used in questioning?

Beaufort Naval Hospital, and right next door to Parris Island. LOTS of military.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 42
Oh, something too look forward to! There is so much to do and see, an extended vacation is a good idea. I lived there for a short time and never got to see it all. But couldn’t make it there. Hence, my love for Charleston is an unrequited one! Very much like my love of the South in general.
yes, twolf. They are definitely sandhill cranes. There is now a third one. They are a beautiful gray color and have a red top on their heads. It is drizzling rain this morning and it looks like they are worming the backyard. They haven’t touched the bread out there. But they are right outside my door and they haven’t run away as I snap their pictures. I love these birds.
Speaker Pelosi gets high marks for being smart, politically savvy, progressive, focused, hardworking, etc., but for somee reason there is not a big shoutout for her to run for president. Is it the gender thing? (And unlike Senator Webb, she has never been a Republican.)
mandrake @ 46
hey…ya still got us.
:-)
I had some serious doubts about Nancy with her early decisions for committee chairs but I have been completely impressed with most of what she’s done so far. I can’t describe it as lust…mebbe warm admiration?
What I mean is, there are things about the South I am so ashamed of and things about people like me that are just despised by the general population here, but I still love her beauty and grace, when it reveals itself to those who bother to look. This is only home I have ever known. And I wish I could figure out how to “enlighten” my peeps here! It’s frustrating! The men, in general, are the most disappointing part, I think. And their women predictably follow their lead, in most cases, which is why the “red” aspect reproduces itself so prodigiously!
Sally @ 54
My secret fantasy is an impeachment of Bush & Cheney and the presidency falls into her lap like a grape.
rumi @ 55
I was originally uninspired by her, but her guts and saavy have impressed me. She’s had to make some difficult, controversial decisions. She oozes grace and professionalism. By contrast, she makes Bush look like a calcified cow patty.
Mandrake @ 57, may your fantasy come true!
Pelosi looked great at the SOTUS and I think it was t-rex that said she should have hit Bush upside the head during the speech. That would be a heck of a SNL skit! And the Bob Geiger cartoon yesterday that had Cheney dressed like the tin man in the SOTUS. Priceless stuff indeed!
An open mind…now, that’s hot. That’s something that’s tough to find on the conservative side.
ccmask – that comment by Trex had me rolling on the floor laughing hysterically….give him a piece of gum and tell him to be quiet till it’s over

You must have the cranes that hang out here all summer! Aren’t they beautiful? You should hear them calling to each other during mating season, you can hear them from miles away!
I know the fundraising thread was last night, but I just wanted to say I’m in – I can’t express the gratitude I feel towards all of you for the help you gave me during my campaign. I challenge every politician that received help through FDL/BlueAmerica to match my $20 (if you’re still reading here).
Finally, General Odom says we should get out of Iraq now, and there is no way Bush/Cheney will come up with a plan now, if they haven’t been able to do it for the past three years.
twolf1 (48) — wow, thanks for posting that link for sandhill cranes!! I didn’t know we had two sanctuaries in state here in Michigan where we could see them, always had to hope they would show up in wetlands near my folks’ summer home.
Will make plans with my birding-freak son to check them out. Thanks again!
ccmask @ 60
Maybe that’s why he was laughing when Bush was talking about reducing our dependence on oil…
Has anyone asked Tim Russert how he feels about what was said about him at the trial?
Does he think it’s true?
Has there been any hint that Fox news gets monetary rewards for being the lap dogs for the White house?
Isn’t it odd that they didn’t say but him on Fox News? Do they realize that Fox only appeals to the choir and not the church?
Noonan @ 62
Oooh! “We are primarily serving the interests of Iran and Al Qaeda” by staying in Iraq. Slam!
Noonan @ 64
A columnist, I can’t remember who, noted that was the only time Cheney smiled during the SOTUS.
OT – Barbaro has another significant setback

Almost didn’t put the coffee down in time. I have never been able to stand McConnell! What a smarmy lying slime-merchant he is, but don’t get me started.
That would be one entertaining matchup. OhPuleeze, on YouTube someone. I’m not gonna waste my time on McC with such a teaser upstairs by LHP. Wow! You guys are not only up early today, but you’re trying to make our eyes spin.
Jus’ droppin’ down here briefly to say Hi & enjoy the Ibis. But gotta dash back to lurking upstairs. That siren LHP calls. This is just not fair on a slow Sunday mornin’, heh ;->
{{{{{{HANG IN THERE MOLLY! WE LOVE YOU}}}}}}
As far as I could tell from watching Meet the Veep this morning, there is no Libby trial going on. I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that Timmeh wouldn’t have the balls to even mention something that he is involved in up to his pudgy white ass.
Unfortunately, Face the Nation doesn’t seem to be available where I am. I would love to see Webb deal with idiots.
btw, as long as Biden seems to insist we take his gleeming presence every bloomin’ Sunday(!), shouldn’t he at least carry around a teaspoon a’ sugar or somethin?!
ENOUGH ALREADY! GO AWAY JOE! for at least 10 minutes the 1st week. Then try 20 min. the next week. & keep trying to stretch it out, eh?
theExile @ 72
Oh you poor thing! We get timmeh repeated around here – ugh – guess I’ll pass twice on watching that double-immunity show today – thanks for the warning. Wish we could get repeats from FtN. Have you tried YouTube? Maybe there’d be something hiding there.

Bet you have lotsa company. I know you do here ;->
I had a comment with the above quote to the effect of – what a dream scenario (Bush-Cheney impeached and the presidency falls into Nancy’s lap). Then in ‘08 Pelosi/Webb could kick butt on Hucksterbee and Jeb while Hilary goes and hangs out at the beach with Bill.
If I’m not mistaken, the Huckster just became #17 lusting after the White House and I’m sure there’s still more to come. I’d love to see Nancy just fall into it, she’s more qualified than most of the other 17 .
Sorry for repeating, somehow the quote formatting got me confused – or maybe I was just too excited thinking about someone decent actually being President of the United States.
We may have started a “Pelosi for President” campaign. Imagine having a decent president and one decidedly more qualified than the other 17 and counting wannabes. And a woman would be icing on the cake. We need a Pelosi in the White House.
With Russert up to his arse with this administration, we should find 5 people who will watch MTP each week and summarize what was said. By doing this it will really hurt Russert’s ratings and we won’t be wasting 60 minutes listening to the drivel and nonsense that is spouted.
I have stopped because it makes me sick. When I worked in DC in the mid-70’s to mid-80’s, there just was not this fraternizing with the press and high administration officials. It just was not done.
I have contempt for all the Sunday a.m. talking heads, because they have become complicit with the very clowns that they are supposed to keep an eye on. How can there be any semblance of objectivity when they are all out at cocktail parties and dinners parties all week long.
I saw Phil Donahue last night on C-Span talking about this very thing that is going on in the media. It was late, around 11:30 or midnight, but if it repeats, it is sure worth watching.
I just cannot stomach our presscorps who are so lazy that they rely on of all people, Drudge first thing each day. I heard that hideous Andrea Mitchell and Matthews say this. They are contemptible in by book.
OT, but this little morsel was dropped on C-Span this am, but Bill Kristol has been given a guest column at Time, Inc. First thing tomorrow, I cancel the next 2 years on that rag. Boycott the networks and the print media. They’ll get the message eventually.
