The scene stagnated to the point of fossilization around the time that Spoon broke out. Denton was the best music town in Texas for about ten years… now, it’s probably Fort Worth in terms of quality, though the scene is pretty underground.</p> <p>Austin has kinda turned into an amusement park replica of itself. Why waste a trip to one of the best cities in the US when every jackass and music industry wannabe in the world will be there too? Unless there’s a killer showcase opportunity, SXSW is overly competitive clusterfuck. It’s impossible to maximize your impact when you wind up playing tug-of-war against everyone else’s event.</p> Having been to SXSW a bunch of times right up until a couple years after it became stupid silly, I have a particular point of view.
