You know things are going well on your blog when everyone is so busy they don't even have room for you to post. Our site administrator RBG finally gave me the thumbs up to start blogging again today since things are thankfully a bit slower (emptywheel's fingers must be ready to fall off from all the Libby trial live blogging she has been doing) just at the same time I'm itching to press the "publish" key again. All I can say is -- damn good to be back.
First off, I'm happy to report that I'm doing really well, surgery was very successful and I'm recovering very quickly thanks to all the people who have stepped up to help and all of the good wishes and prayers that came my way in the past week. It's hard to know where to begin the list of thank-yous. Much love to Digby and Tom Swan who got me to the hospital and held my hand waiting for surgery (they claim I was cussing Dick Cheney as I was going under but I have no recollection of it), then sat an 8 hour vigil til I came out and were there in the ICU when I woke up. It was a loooong day that only a true friend would devote and I cannot thank them both enough.
I got tons of flowers, amazing chocolates, fabulous care and wonderful visitors. Arianna Huffington arrived with an enormous arrangement of a hundred long-stemmed red roses, and at one point I looked up to see Howie Klein, Matt Stoller and Tom all staring down at their laptops (thanks to the hospital WiFi) and I thought to myself as I hit the pain pump "wow this is pretty cool." (Come to think of it, if they weren't actually there somebody might want to let me know.) At one point I remember someone commenting that the staff at Saint Johns had been fantastic and we really needed to do something to thank them, and the next thing I knew three huge boxes of confections from Sweet Lady Jane's arrived for them with no note attached. I still don't know who to thank for that, but it was exceptionally thoughtful.
Many, many thanks to the fabulous Linda M., David Jenison and RJ Eskow who have all chauffeured me hither, there and yon since my release from the hospital, and to both John Amato and Rick Jacobs who have kindly lent me their guest rooms during my sojourn here in LA. Also to the phenomenal Spazeboy (who is having his own fundraiser for Spazemom) who has been doing a superb job of poodle sitting. And to everyone on the FDL crew, both on the front page and behind the scenes, all I can say is -- wow. The emotional support, friendship, love, hard work and dedication to craft was nothing short of amazing. In addition to knowing that everything was running just fine without me on the site, they have all become such good friends and such strong emotional support they feel like family. To Christy, Pach, TRex, Siun, RBG, all the guest posters and everyone who works to make FDL happen (especially Jamie and John who worked like dogs to keep FDL and C&L up last week under relentless DOS attack), as well as everyone who participates in the community, other bloggers who posted on their own sites and those who don't say too much but contributed to our fundraiser to make the Plame coverage possible and to keep the lights on in the place -- you're all golden. Much love in my heart right now for you all.
And finally, to my doctors, Armando Giuliano (who was told by a fellow practitioner, "if your Republican clientele falls off, you'll know why") and Jay Orringer (of whom Digby says, "that guy is deep") -- well, what can you say. They saved my life. And they tell me there's no reason I can't be in Washington DC on Monday morning, February 5, sitting at the Prettyman courthouse getting ready to watch Dick Cheney sweat, just like I promised. Or so they say. Still not sure it's true, but it sounds about right.
Don't you think?
xoxo

Jane!
Zero! I can’t believe it! Jane: Welcome back. At the top of this page, that fire will always burn, while bedlam dreams of rain. Welcome. Your FDL family is thrilled to have you back.
And that photo. You look so cool.
JANE!!
Just for fun. later tonight I’ll post a couple more pics of the lovely and talented Jane.
You rock, dude! (As the kidz say)
Is this a tear in the Time/Space Cotinuum?
IF so, I’m glad I’m here with Biodun and Jane.
Good for you. Get well soon.
Welcome back, Lady Jane! Keep on trucking on the road to recovery! God bless!
(((((((Jane)))))),
Welcome home! Been keeping a vigil here for you too.
Christy, Marcy, Pach, Swopa, Siun, and Trex have been, as always - but particularly this week, brilliant. You’re all making history here, and raising the bar for everyone.
Thank you !!!
Go Jane! As busy as the site was while you were out, we still missed you.
Biodun…congrats on the belated zero.
It may be a bit unusual but, if it keeps the servers happy, aren’t we all just happy to be here with Jane?
Jane…you don’t know me, but I’ve written a bit about you and your blog on my own. I have such a huge respect for you. For your blog, which is kicking the ass of every major news outlet covering the Libby trial, of course; but also for your courage to talk about your health issues for everyone to see. I really do believe that in so doing you have made women everywhere pay attention to their own health care. In so doing, you will save some lives. That’s a huge gift. So, thanks again, welcome back, and go kick some Cheneyass. ;)
I am going to party like it is 2009! Jane, so happy that everything went well and that you are back.
Jane — health and happiness to you and yours.
Glad to see you back!
You’re one sexy, smart beeyotch! Fvck cancer!
And I mean that only in the best possible way.
Ah, the world feels more stable now. Democrats in charge on the Hill, Jane back in front of her laptop, practicing her sneer for Big Dick… all good. Great to have you back, have a happy, healthy and quick recovery.
take care! be well, and keep fighting! : >
Welcome back Jane!
Dear Jane, it is wonderful news to see you back blogging so soon after your surgery. I am thrilled for you. Everyone is thrilled. And Fitzgerald’s gift to you? Karl Rove on the stand! Can’t beat that kind of homecoming. Great to have you back. Enjoy!
Dear Jane,
It is great to have you back.
I could not stop the tears of joy as I read your post.
I am late to the party… but Jane I am so thrilled that you are at it again…
Yippeeeeeeeeeeeee
Now puhleeze take all the rest you need to be strong and stay strong… you are better as a live blogger and a silent bowsprit.
I have been so thinking good thoughts for you every single day until this evening when I came home to see your mug… Good on you…
We are not stopping all the good vibes.
Jane is back Yippppeeeeeeeee
Jane–
I’ve never written to you before but I feel very close to you—both your political beliefs and your current (and hopefully temporary) situation.
I had breast cancer surgery about 6 years ago and, so far, so good. But anyone who goes through this once, much less than three times, is both blessed and cursed.
Blessed in that we really appreciate getting through the horror and start realizing how important every day of our life is. And how important all the people who love us are.
Cursed in that every day, the sword hangs over our heads. I don’t know about you, but I dread bathing now—washing my breasts (I opted for a lumpectomy so I still have them) is still a trauma.
I stll get “twinges” in the area of surgery and every twinge I get, I think the worst. I take two aspirin and tell myself to call the doctor if the twinge doesn’t go away. (So far, it has.)
I get yearly breast MRIs instead of mammograms because I have scar tissue and the MRI can tell the difference between scar tissue and a new cancer—I’m sure with the great doctors you have you know all this, but just thought I’d pass that along.
Will look forward to hearing all you have to say about the Libby trial. I can’t believe how exciting it’s getting—now, not only Cheney but Rove too!!
One last thing I thought you’d enjoy—I have a daughter (she’s probably about your age) who was a professor at a U.S. university. She said if Bush was re-elected, she would move to Canada and by God, she did it!! She’s now a professor at a major Canadian university and is urging me and my husband to move up there as soon as possible.
With all my best wishes,
Marilyn Wilson
Huzzah!
This is worthy of a toast. As Patrick O’Brian’s Captain Jack Aubrey would say, “Confusion to our enemies.”
May you long continue to enlighten us Jane.
Welcome back Jane,
They say that people are like stain-glass windows, and that their true beauty cannot be revealed unless they are illuminated from within.
I might have said this once in a long ago post so forgive me my “middle-aged moment” but I have always thought that you have a beautiful light within you that shines like a true Beacon of strength and hope to a world that can really use every ray it can get.
I wish you the very best recovery, I’m dealing with my own adventure in health and know that love and support go a long, long way in helping to heal.
Welcome back. Please keep on healing up and recovering well.
Glad to see you back. Continued blessings to you, Jane.
Great to see you back Jane. Onward !
It is great to see you back in the trenches. Glad things went well and you are on the mend.
Happy Trails!
YYAAAAYYY Jane and friends and medical team! Will keep the thoughts coming…
Jane,
I can honestly say I have no idea what you’ve been through and I hope I never have to bear the disease of cancer.
I can say that I’m glad you are doing better and appreciate the fact that you’re back to your keyboard and helping FDL running full force. I don’t care if studies haven’t been done yet; blogging is therapy for the soul.
And speaking as someone who worked in a hospital and as an avid reader of FDL, please remember those souls on the nursing staff and in the pharmacy. They’re more than “staff”. They’re not in the limelight, but they want their patients to receive the best care they can possibly deliver. They may get a paycheck, but they don’t work for the money and lord knows they do their burdens share of work.
I’m glad that you;re well and that so many people did their jobs successfully!
i think what the hell is this? part 2? it’s the same damn post.
then i realize it’s for more well wishes, (well that’s what i think.)
wishing you well jane. you rock, and you’re kind of hot, ok, you’re really hot.
Welcome back, Jane! FDL has been been in fine form while you were out - everyone here was clearly trained by the best.
Welcome back, Jane. The interwebs are a better place today than they were yesterday.
Late to the party as usual Jane but we are all glad you are doing so well and are back and ready to party. The world is a better place for your efforts and we love you for it. Get stronger and know that we have your back.
You totally rock Jane! So happy to log on and see your beautiful face!
Speedy recovery and looking forward to the day you get to stare down dead eye dick. Dick and Jane……..lets get ready to rumble.
Go Jane !
Go Fitz!
p.s. I have put off a mammogram for four years now but I’m making that appointment in your honor, Thanks Jane
Obviously the deities desired you to remain with us through these trying times. You are blessed indeed.
Thanks for all you have done & will do. Many are the folks you have a positive influence on you will never know. We`re all pulling for you.
Keep you head up & keep on marching forward. Courage comes in many forms.
Bless you and yours.
“Every once in a while, you’ve got to do something hard, do something you’re not comfortable with. A person needs a gut check.” - Corporal Chad Ritchie, U.S.M.C.
Jane, so great to see you back blogging. I’ve been thinking of you and praying for you all week. What an amazing, fast recovery. Part of me wants to say, “Slow down, take it easy awhile,” and the other part says, “Do what you gotta do, balls (ovaries?) to the wall, if that’s what works for you.” You’ll figure it out! xo 2 u 2,
Cliff
Jane,
What charley said.
In addition: You are a real trooper and an inspiration in so many ways — courage, massive brain power, accomplished writer, good heart, great soul, hard worker, dedicated Progressive. You and the FDL crew kept my spirits up through some tough Bushco years and campaign ‘06. Much respect!
I hope this lifts your spirit a bit! Welcome back!
I look forward to your report on watching Big Dick sweat.
Jane,
Welcome back. All the flowers and visitors sounds awesome. Hope all goes well.
Welcome back! Glad to hear you are doing so well! If I can help with anything while you are in DC, don’t hesitate to email.
BAC
Welcome back, Jane, from an “almost-lurker”. Best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery.
Have your guys figured out the source(s) of the DOS attacks? If so, out the bastards here and then give their names to the FBI.
Welcome back, Jane!
Just saw your post, Jane. Awesome, Awesome, AWESOME GOOD NEWS!!! I’m so happy to hear that you’re back blogging and getting better and stronger every day! Still sending healing thoughts.
welcome back Jane, congrats on a successful surgery, and bundles of best wishes for a continued successful and speedy recovery. you deserve to be in DC covering this already explosive trial/moment in history. I hope you get there asap.
Hooray, goddamnit.
Best wishes, Jane, for a speedy and full recovery. You look great! Been following your progress and couldn’t be happier for you. Sending lots of healing light your way.
WELCOME HOME JANE!!! WE MISSED YOU!!!
Looks like the prayers of the community were heard and sounds like you are well on the road to recovery. We are all so happy to have you back.
It will be wonderful if you will be in DC next week, but make sure you bring WARM CLOTHES…it is brutally cold here on the East Coast right now…in Boston (in my town 10 miles north) it is 2 degrees!! You would freeze into a stick in a minute…doubt DC would be as bad, but be prepared. We don’t need you getting a cold or catching a bug so soon after surgery. We want
you healthy!!
Have a fantastic trip to DC and enjoy every minute of the trial…betcha they zero in on Cheney and his crew and they will be caught with their pants down!! I can always dream!!
Love and blessing to you and yours….
Maureen Maloney
Welcome back. Best wishes and get well soon.
i’m like everyone else:
i just want you to be okay.
you and your fdl commandos have helped me stay sane And entertained and inspired me.
i want to say prayers for your recovery:
any spiritual/religio preference(s)?
liveStrong
Late to the party as usual, but I to wanted to say Welcome Back. You’ve been in my thoughts and prayers.
k.
So happy the surgery went well. Glad that you are back. Look forward to your reports from DC next week. Give Team Scooter hell!!!
Happy you are recovering so well.
Thank you for your courage and your brains, and your graciousness to those who gave you their love and caring.
It seems like a long time since I first encountered this blog, with the “dust bunny” hypothesis as I recall. Back then it was a you and reddhedd show. Since then, you’ve both become cultural icons extrordinaire. I’m glad you’re getting better and able to go to the Libby/Fitzgerald extraveganza - you’ve been a big part of getting it on the front page. So far, it certainly hasn’t disappointed - if anything, it’s better than advertised. Channel a special hex on Cheney for the rest of us Southern Liberals here in your native Red State South.
Good on you Jane - from a fellow cancer survivor - eat your greens and enjoy your life!

And thank you for stopping by St. John’s as well, Steve. It was great to see you.
Damn glad you’re back. Speedy recovery. Very inspiring! Like a hobbled Willis Reed walking on the court in game 7 in the 1970 NBA finals, you’ve let the other side know they now have absolutely no chance to prevail. All the best,
john
Hey, Lady. Nice of you stay around. Doin’ okay?

That is a very good thing.
Good to hear that you’re back on your feet and getting the gloves back on, Jane. Nice pic. :)
Have a safe trip to D.C.
So good to have you back, hot stuff :-) I spent a week with my sis in L.A. recently when she went through cancer surgery, so I know how it can be. She beat hers and you will too. Love and kisses.
Jane,
It’s a joy to hear from you. I’m thrilled that you are getting the care you need and hope for a postive result. We’ve been dealing with a resistant strain of bacterial skin infection and have seen first hand the appalling state of health care. We live in one of the fortunate medically rich areas yet are amazed at just what we’re required to navigate in order to get the appropriate care. Having spent way too much time in the ER in the last month it is all too apparent just how abysmal the system has become. I’m glad you’re able to find better. So I’m thinking when we get Libby convicted, Cheney fired, and the troops home, we really need to take on health care. While my daughter has most of my thoughts, whatever’s left goes to you.
I feel it is necessary to delurk, just to say welcome back Jane! Best wishes for a speedy recovery…and…best wishes for convictions for Scooter, as I’m sure THAT will aid in your recovery! ;)
As the world slowly returns to some sort of normal-usual-whatever,
it is good to know you will see Mr. Cheneys flop sweat in person.
Some fun. Go Ms. Hamsher, cheers, CdR
you’re really beautiful. thanks for loving life so much ……
Thank you, Jane…healing to you always, precious woman.
My little boy saw this post, pointed to Jane’s picture, and said “She’s so pretty!!!” He never says that, by the way. I was quite surprised.
Much love to you, Jane. You look radiant. Take care of yourself, take it easy and be well.
glad to see you’re back, jane, and glad to see your front, too!

Jane,
It’s funny… I don’t know you, but I feel as if i do… I’ve never met you, but I feel as if I have… I’ve only laid eyes on you once in my life, on the occasion of the Valerie Plame panel at YKos and was struck by your grace, your humor and your beauty (that observation was thankfully first made by my wife rather than me, sparing me a good hour or two of uncomfortable silence)…
At any rate, reading your post describing your impending surgery filled me with a sadness one usually experiences only upon learning such news about a friend… and I realized that in an odd way, you are a friend… without presuming a creepy cyber over-familiarity, let’s just say I’d grown accustomed to your face and voice.. and it was sorely missed… and upon seeing your name again today, I quite literally let loose an audible gasp and found myself excitedly phoning my wife to give her the good news… “Jane’s Back!!!”
And indeed you are… and this makes me (and all of us) very happy…
I’m SO looking forward to reading your descriptions of a sweaty, cantankerous, fidgety
Dick Cheney on the witness stand…
Welcome back, Jane…
YAY!
Welcome back, and heal well. ^.^
Glad you’re back, Jane. Please take it easy and follow your doctor’s orders.
Jane, There are few things I want more right now than for you to be feeling well enough to be there to watch Mr Evil sweat. Personally, I wouldn’t be able to look at him, but you’re braver than I am. Get some good rest to prepare for it.
This post is as warmly heartfelt, sincerely genuine and as “dedicated to crafting” a beautiful note of appreciation as I think I’ve seen from you, Jane. Your golden touch seems to have only been enhanced by the trauma and stress of your surgery.
I think I detect a small degree of ’shell shock’ in the otherwise-amazing photo - small wonder - but as someone else put it well last thread, you are indeed a fearless leader, and an example to us all.
Welcome home.
Welcome home, Jane. You were missed.
Sending healing vibes your way…
(especially Jamie and John who worked like dogs to keep FDL and C&L up last week under relentless DOS attack)
who is attacking ?? is it possible to track down and prosecute ??
We are overjoyed, Jane, that you are back among the firepups and contributing your exceptional skills to this absolutely ‘awesome’ commentary. But please be good to yourself - pace yourself, ease back into the fray. It’s finally happening. Like many, I haven’t missed a day of the Lake even if means logging in long after everyone else goes off to bed here. It hasn’t been disappointing….we couldn’t all be that wrong tho, could we? I’m so pleased that you will be here with us too when the verdicts come down. Stay well.
it’s wonderful to have you back, jane.
all we can hope for in this world is the comfort and support of close friends and a larger community of kindred spirits, and you have built that here at fdl.
it feels good that a dear friend is on the mend. please do take care to follow your doctors’ recommendations scrupulously. there comes a time when the warranties on our bodies expire, so cut no corners in nursing yourself.
Mostly a lurker and occasionally a commenter here, coming out to candidly observe that Jane kicks ass.
So very glad all is good after surgery,
Continued good fortune!
Wishing you a speedy recovery back to full health, Jane. Thanks for all you do for democracy and freedom!!
Welcome back! Where did you go Canada? France?
I hope you weren’t relying on Corporate American healthcare…sheesh.
Nothing can I say as well as people already have. Thank you, thank you for this amazing blog, and you take good care of yourself!
Just lurk here like for two years,
But
Your post made me cry for joy, and some sorrow.
I wish you strength and good health to further this awesome project you have created, and make it grow vastly.
Stay well
Queen Jane, approximately,
It’s GOOD to be Queen!

Jane’s first words to the V.P.

Welcome back Jane!! Glad to hear you’re doing well.
Great to see you posting again and glad to hear you will be able to get to the trial from the 5th.
I’m not religious in anyway but thank god you’re ok
Jane, FDL without your voice is simply not the same. It is very good but with you it is simply GREAT! Numero uno. Welcome back!

Finally, a thread that hasn’t closed where I can express the good wishes I’ve had for you all this time, Jane. You’re looking fabulous–bask in all the well-deserved love for a bit, ’cause we need you back.
Excellent news, Jane, all around.
One quibble - you don’t mention the nursing care that you received. Nurses aren’t just “staff” - as you refer to the general hired help. They are the professionals who cared for you before your surgery, who made sure that the surgeon was operating on your correct body part, who made sure that you were ready to have the surgery, who assessed you, who took care of making sure that you recovered from anesthesia, who made sure that you were safe to go home, who made sure that you understood what medications to take, how to take them, and assured that you indeed, could get them. They made sure that your follow-up healthcare appointments and services were in place. They made sure that your questions were answered, and that you have the resources to have future questions answered by someone who is qualified to do so. They made sure that you could change your dressing, or had someone else who could. They made sure that you were empowered to be safe.
Candy’s nice. Thank you’s sent to “staff” are nice. But Jane, do you even remember your nurses’ names? Aren’t they important enough to deserve to be known as people - and professionals?
I hope that this is disturbing enough to lure you andothers who recognized themselves to the Universal Health blog, where you can learn about the most important professionals you never knew.
Professional nursing, empowered patients. Good health.
ditto every wonderful thought
Happy to hear things are going well.
A full and speedy recovery to you. I am heartened by the supportive nature of your friends and well-wishers.
When you’re strong enough to handle it, check out the C-SPAN coverage of “The State of Conservatism” panel held by the National Review w/ Katherine Lopez, Kate O’Bierne, Mona Charon, Michelle Malkin and Lara Ingram that took place last night at some college.
The contest was neck and neck to see who was more clueless; the panelists or the audience. WARNING! Not for those with weak stomachs!
Best laugh line was from Mona Charon who seriously suggested that conservative comics start an all-out campaign to let people know (esp young people) just how cool and “with it” conservatives are.
BTW, if you’ve returned from your medical ordeal with any sort of special powers (2nd sight, sixth sense, the ability to wish people to the cornfield), please don’t hesitate to use them.
(especially Jamie and John who worked like dogs to keep FDL and C&L up last week under relentless DOS attack)
I’ve been wondering why the site’s been down so much — wasn’t sure whether you were under attack or straining under the load of increased readership for your trial coverage.
