[…] And the comments are pouring in, some quite good. The blog on Patrick Fitzgerald’s opening statement has already been called the “best blog ever,” and already there is speculation about forthcoming indictments of others– and there’s only been one lower-level witness so far. Some commenters are saying already that Libby has thrown Karl Rove under the bus. […]

Regardez impeachment….we all should be aware that impeachments can not only be used to REMOVE an executive from office…but also to DENY the “emoulements” of office to that official even if they pre-emptively resign or their term ends.

Thus Bush could still be impeached and convicted for “high crimes and misdemeanors” after his term ends…leaving him without the right to use the benefits of the office of a retired President. No retirement money or health benefits, no Secret Service agents, no use of the Presidential seal, no franking privelege, no office space, no funds to support a Presidential library, no powers to challenge declassification actions, etc.

Seems perfectly reasonable if he is found guilty of involvement in these reprehensible acts.

Bush would thus become the first President “convicted” (although not a “sitting President”) of impeachable crimes.

When Fitz announced the Libby indictment he said “Truth is the engine of our judicial system”. I think he believes this, I sure hope so!

Let Fitz convict Libby on all counts. Then let’s hope Bush pardons him. It will create a firestorm the like of which has not been seen since the Saturday Night Massacre. Enter a couple of new high crimes and misdemeanors in the lexicon: (1) abuse of the pardon power and (2) intentional disclosure of intelligence secrets for political retribution. George W. Bush R.I.P.

Brilliant reporting by ‘emptywheel’! Positively, brilliant. Libby is in it up to his eyeballs. But even if convicted, Bush will pardon him. This country is becoming more and more corrupt with Bush and the other neocons at the helm. When they start talking about a ‘new world order’ I start hearing Deutschland Uber Allis in my head. Scary.

Deandra, if Bush tries that, he immediately drops below 20% in the polls and the REPUBLICANS will start impeachment proceedings. They’re already bailing on his Iraq policy. It won’t take much more for them to turn on him like rats in a slumfire — they’ll need to if they want to have a prayer of surviving the 2008 electoral massacre.

But if he pardons him in December 2008, there’s naught to be done.

Fitz “Cheney told Libby that Plame worked at CIA and AGAINST THE SPREAD OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS”.

Where is that report about the damage done to National Security by this outing? Was it ever finished or released?
