Good morning from the Prettyman Courthouse. Today begins opening statements in the Libby trial. I'll be sitting in the courtroom throughout proceedings today, and the amazing Emptywheel will be liveblogging as the action goes ahead.
Last night, we had some amazing Ethiopian food at a restaurant -- Dukem -- that Pach recommended. We had a great combo meal -- amazing spicy chicken and lamb, and fabulous injera. Afterward, we did a little grocery shopping -- bloggers have to have their coffee, you know (but we have GOT to get some bigger mugs -- Plame House has dainty little teacups and that is not going to work for either of us for long).
Then looseheadprop stopped over, and we sat around, drank beer and talked shop until the wee hours. Just three Traitorgate aficianados, talking about the minutiae of the case...and about everything else you can possibly imagine. Yes, it does sound like a geek fest, but we had a LOT of fun. And the lovely littleprop sent along a supply of candies for the house, for which we are very grateful -- what a sweetie!
Should be an interesting day today. Opening statements, which looseheadprop covered for us here, really set the scene for the trial as a whole and also opens up a whole lot of the trial strategy for scrutiny in how the pieces are set in motion by the lawyers from the start of the trial. This is truly the moment where the case is focused -- either with a very clear picture, or with a murky one -- and it will be interesting which snapshot the jury takes away.
Beyond that, one of the more interesting things to watch is the reaction of the jurors as they listen to the openings. I'll be watching for facial expressions or other "tells" from the jurors as the trial moves forward. It will be most interesting to see how that changes over time, depending on the witness and the attorney speaking.
At the end of the court day today, we may have a surprise for you all -- more details on it as they firm up today -- and I'll do a wrap-up later on all the proceedings. Hang onto your hats, kids, the Libby trial is about to get started.

Mornin’, Christy!
Fitz!
From Reuters this AM: Cheney, media to take stand in Libby perjury case
Morning all.
More Cheney. A witch! A witch! Burn ‘er!
Hi Balrog
All hail the great emptywheel!
When you get back to Ann Arbor, shout me out. I would like to buy you lunch at Zingerman’s
Looking forward to your liveblog!
Popcorn!
Keep it popping.
Inside the beltway. Be careful.
Hi twolf.
Sorry for the early morning shrieking. Even Balrogs are afraid of Lynne Cheney.
Talk about your high stakes poker game!
Looking forward to hearing about the “tells.”
ooooohhh boy, here it comes.
FITZMAS !!!!!!!!!
Ok it got through the filters.
Can’t wait . . . . now how to work and stay here too. . . .
twolf1 @ 3
An extremely misleading article. An F by emptywheel’s standards.
huge day, great timing — opening of the trial in the early news cycle, capped by the state of the union tonight. try NOT linking the two. it cannot be avoided.
I have a feeling this is going to be a big day. We have live blogging Libby trial, a possible surprise (”At the end of the court day today, we may have a surprise for you all — more details on it as they firm up today“), Senator Chris Dodd stopping by FDL at 4:15 EST, and we get to make fun of Chimpy’s
STFUSOTU. Everyone got their coffee/popcorn supplies stocked and at the ready?Redd! In D.C.!
Look out!
Isn’t Chris Dodd coming by today? I caught a hint of a surprise in that one too. Does that make two surprises in one day? Or am I getting all Fitzmasy here. :)
Mornin’ Christy, All. Sneaking in to get email before I have to go to town. Icy cold here in Texas. BRRRR……
for some weird reason, I’m looking forward to the SOTU… seems like every time the shrub opens his mouth, his approval rating sinks…
candygram for Irving !, candygram for Irving !

Good Morning Christy and Firedogs
OldCoastie @ 17
How low can he go?
OldCoastie @ 17
Could it be anticipation of Webb’s rebuttal? Or the reactions of the new Congress?
And the link between Bush’s jar and his mouth, ummm…yup!
:)
jeeze, I forgot about Webb’s rebuttal to Butthead in my list at #14
did Monk ever finish up Jane’s collage?
…speaking of falling approval ratings
have been thinking we could play the SOTU drinking game and use Eye-Rack as the word - with no one going to the ER w/ accute alcohol poisoning - he only said it 15 times last year -and 8 of those were in tandem Iraq/Iraqis. so this year what, only 5 jello shots ???
goodness gracious ! where was I when the announcement of Senator Dodd’s visit was announced ?!?! wow, what a difference one year makes -
Slate Dickerson has a lively article.
Bombshells… I want bombshells.
Thanks for being there…

Oh I am SO excited!!! Finally, three years-plus after the outing, we are finally going to make a little traction!! Wish I could be there, I’d be glad to make the runs to Starbucks.
(Herbal tea for Marcy — don’t let her get too wound up on caffeine!)
By the way, Marcy, don’t worry about Comstock. Babs thinks this is a court of public opinion and it’s definitely not. If Babs had any real power, Cheney’s JAR wouldn’t be in the nutjob-whacko basement with Bush bearing down on him. (And if the public ever really draws dotted lines between her work as a lobbyist and certain successes/failures of companies for which she lobbied, the public would string her up by her beloved red jackets.)
Jane, you lurking? Got any squibs on Babs you want to use? I’m sure somebody could take dictation for you. Come on, you know you are itching for it!! Or maybe you can get one of your blogging visitors to help you try out a YouTube post — no writing involved!! No pressure, though; I know what it’s like to be pent up and unable to blog, and I’m betting you are chomping at the bit! Hope you are feeling much better today and that the post surgery pain and stiffness are starting to subside a bit. ;-)
Looking forward to mundane details, like how attorneys use notes (hopefully they are past the sin of reading openings to the jury, but one never knows), whether they use a lectern, how they treat each other and their staff, and, yes, how they’re dressed.
HAHA.. all over CNN this morning are stories of how unpopular shrub is and reviews of what he said last year and just how unsuccessful that was…
The whole world’s watching.
Try not to cheer too loud as Fitz lays out all of the reasons the jury will find Libby guilty, guilty, guilty!!
YEAH CHRISTIE!
YEAH EMPTYWHEEL!
YEAH PACH!
WOOT WOOT WOOT YEE HAWH!
Wish I could stay and chat! Will check back later. (HAH! As if there were any other choice on a day like today!)
Scowling is permitted when Scooter’s lawyers are talking.
Rayne @ 26
While you’re at it… Don’t forget
Miss Dart-thrower, the axe-grinder herself, Clarice Feldman…
Medaka!! Nice to see you!! How’s things in your part of the world?
OldCoastie @ 17
actually, it’s difficult for me to watch…the man makes me physically ill.
Hey medaka! how goes it?
dmg @ 36
me too. i plan to hang out here for moral support while trying to watch/listen.
A friend’s assessment
“I’m afraid old 10-gallons of nothin’ (all hat and no cattle) will take considerably longer (and lie a lot). Hard to avoid him on the tube tonight, but I’ll do my level best.”
dmg @ 36
I can certainly sympathize, but this will be the first one I will make a point to watch. I want to see the reactions of the members of Congress and also want some context for Webb’s response.
Has the SOTU bar been set so low that chimpy can’t fail? …nah, he’ll find a way
Medaka! So good to see you.
thinking of DC….
are any firepups planning on being at the anti-war protest this saturday?
i’m hoping to be there and would love to meetup…
everything old is new again !

oh and,
おはようのmedaka! 私達との持つことそう素晴らしい再度!
Good morning from the northern California coast. It is nearly spring here, and every day the Canada geese fly over in huge flocks headed north.
Just to put things in perspective, we watched the PBS show on John and Abagail Adams last night, and, as in many times in my life, I was reminded of the feeling that the United States has been starstruck since its beginning. We are children of destiny. I can’t explain it, coming from a guy trained in the scientific method, but there it is.
mandrake @ 40
that’s a good point — he certainly isn’t used to stepping out of the bubble and speaking in front of audiences that, however polite, don’t all hold with what he has to say.
Would be nice if the press would stop obsessing over Hillary/Obama long enough to give this trial the attention it deserves.
As is the case with my conspiratorial mind working overtime, I believe there is a method to their madness, e.g., distract the public from things which are truly relevant to the political landscape in the here and now, such as Iraq and the Libby trial, with mindless fluffernutterisms.
Ugh. Really fed up this week.
Congrats FDL on 25,000,000 site visits.

Got my Stumptown ‘Hair bender’ beans in the grinder and a kettle on.
Ready to whirl.
Rayne @ 35
hi Rayne!
Wacky-busy as usual with indigo cottons and overworked high-school students. I’ve been deep-lurking lots here with so much happening lately, trying to stay sober, rooting for Jane especially, and of course rooting for Team Fitz von FDL in DC. Nothing to add to the conversation, really; you guys are the edumacators! Just had to shout for joy a bit, watching everything start to shift. It feels good!
twolf1 @ 23
Yes, this is the legacy potus keeps yammering about. And George Washington, whom I believe did NOT turn the entire world against us, is supposed to move over for this sorry excuse for a human being. I am profoundly angry today with the kool-aid mainliners who voted for and still support this horrid thing (I can’t call him the president, I just can’t). I am equally angry with their enablers, the msm.
twolf1 @ 37
Hey twolf!
It goes good here, but just too too always busy. How goes it with you?
Did you ever make direct contact with Old Sow?
I AM VISUALLY HANDICAPPED, SO I USE ‘SHOUTING’ PEOPLE TELL ME HOW RUDE THAT IS. SORRY. I CUT OFF COMMERCIAL TELEVISION, AVOIDING THE BUSH FAN CLUBS, TWO YEARS AGO. THANK GOD FOR FDL AND OTHERS. ILL BE ABLE TO ‘SEE’ HOW THIS SHAKES OUT. HAVE HEARD THE YOUNG TURKS ARE GIVING IT A SPECIAL TREATMENT AS WELL AS WEBB’S REBUTTAL. WHAT A GIFT WEBB IS TO THE NATIONAL TREASURE. BEING AN OLD DAWG, FORMER MARINE ILL BE SITTING UP STRAIGHT FOR THAT. AND FITZ TAKING DOWN THE WALL, BEGINNING WITH THIS ‘BRICK’ LIBBY — I PREDICT A NIXONIAN NUEREMBURG FOLLOWS. BLESS OUR LADY JANE. IM OUT //
selise @ 43
I’ll be there! I’m supposed to be meeting my local peeps at noon at the Air&Space museum (on the Mall side.) You’re welcome to join us. I look kinda like this. ;-)
Email me at razorsharpwit AT gmail DOT com, and we can exchange cell numbers and other stuff.

Didn’t know you were in A2.
Courtroom is full, just waiting for Walton…
medaka @ 52
Busy here too. Mostly trying to find work rather than actually doing paying work. Yes, I did get in touch with OS, thanks for your help on that.
cbl @ 44
heh! hi cbl!
it suddenly feels like a version of the old
morning crew has been called back for a re-make….
oh man, I’m gonna HATE going to work today!
OldCoastie @ 58
call in sick… bad case of Fitzitis
dmg @ 36
I find him only mildly annoying to watch, it’s listening that drives me nuts. We’re going to watch at a restaurant with the local Democrats if Ms. Redshift is feeling up to it (she’s had a cold and lost her voice.) I figure I’ll just walk to the other room if it gets too much for me, ’cause I have a hard time not talking back to the TV, and in a group, people tend not to like that (unless we’re MST3K-ing).

fyi - a certain flowah has been known to frequent this site -

twolf1 @ 41
I’m guessing he will go back to the “deer in headlights” look that he used in his Iraq speech. I believe he has been told firmly by his handlers that the cockiness, when talking about sending hundreds to thousands more Americans to their deaths, is just not going to play as well as it did in the heady 911 war fever days.
Redshift @ 60
“In the not-too-distant future! . . .”

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: most the people I’ve met working and living overseas for the past several years seem to make a strong distinction between the US government and the people of the USA* — they don’t hold us directly accountable for what our government is doing, and tend to start from a position of sympathy.
But if the conversation is frank and lasts more than a little while, one question almost always comes up:
“Can’t you do something to stop him/them?”
The downside of being known as a shining example of democracy is that you’re expected to show how it works to correct situations like we find ourselves in now. We need to disavow the actions of the present administration.
We need to Impeach.
Now.
–MarkusQ
*And especially between the actions of the US government and Americans in general. People from Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Venezuela, etc. are not held accountable for the actions of the US, even though they are obviously all Americans.
egregious @ 42
oh greggie! hidey hidey hidey HI!
How are YOU?? I’ve been good, getting better — at least I think so!
Coenzyme Q-10, DHA, exercise, oatmeal, almonds, sauerkraut
and raw fish are my friends! Well, not all at the same time — heh!!
mandrake @ 61
Deer in the headlights look is scarier.
Mr. Martha has discovered the secret of being able to watch the SOTU–tune in to Telemundo or another Spanish language channel. It’s much less painful and moderately entertaining to boot…(and, a good way to test our high school spanish…)

Again, I hate to be the math geek, but I just can’t help myself. It was a five-count indictment, I believe, so this comment should actually read: “guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty!”
Redshift @ 54
you’ve got mail, thanks!
live blogging up
Since we are on the subject of the SOTU, I am reposting something that made me LOL this a.m. Credit goes to punaise (and from there, Jesus General).
mandrake @ 71
707.
And Sen. LIEberman, if you are lucky, he’ll give you a little honk back.
cbl @ 61
very good, thanks cbl!
me thinks the most important thing fitz can do is relate how important the case was to national security, not so much the fact that libby lied and prevented discovering what happened, but the depraved nature of those lies and the ramifications including the fact that people who have no regard for American security continue to have access to our most guarded secrets

Hi egregious! How on earth can you get any sleep these days?!
Hey. Maybe you can help me with my prove-adie’s-an-idjit project.
Any way to measure hits in real time, lest’n yer a mod? Yes’m, i guess i be obsessive-compulsive or there-bouts on occasion.
I jes know in me heart the “adiefactor” is gotta be real and measurable.
backin’up fer starters:

p.s., as per comments yestidie, ain’t talkin’ yer regulation plumbing. i be talkin’ toobez, but similar effect. DANGIT! Ask teddysteve (y’know, the rube who parked ‘is truck on the toobez t’other day & made ‘em slow to a crawl) - perchance he’ll unnerstan, mebbie.
yep, good night’s sleep, & i’m still nuts & tryin’ ta ruin teddysteve’s naptime…
so i’ll go back to my perch now & listen to HRH Redd work her craft.
Luv this place! May not be heaven, but purty close…. ;->
OT, but worth noting:
North Carolina State University women’s basketball coach Kay Yow will be back on the bench for the Wolfpack’s next game, this coming Thursday.
Why do we firepups care about this?
Coach Yow is back after a two-month leave of absence to deal with her third bout of breast cancer.
Go Coach! Go Jane!

Good catch!
Fitz knocked it out of the park during his press conference last year by stressing the importance of Plame’s undercover status. I’d like to hear more of that.
Hugs to Jane.
BTW, Christy, my apartment is a few blocks from the courthouse. I’ll be happy to buy you guys dinner or lunch sometime; Jaleo has the best tapas in Washington, and it’s right across the street.
You guys still need coffee mugs? I’ve got plenty to spare, and am local. Give a holler!
