for the week ending 1/20/07:
National Sanctity of Human Life Day, 2007
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America…
National Sanctity of Human Life Day serves as a reminder that we must value human life in all forms, not just those considered healthy, wanted, or convenient. Together, we can work toward a day when the dignity and humanity of every person is respected.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Sunday, January 21, 2007, as National Sanctity of Human Life Day. I call upon all Americans to recognize this day with appropriate ceremonies and to underscore our commitment to respecting and protecting the life and dignity of every human being.
So sayeth the President who turned the Hurricane Katrina disaster into an almost incomprehensibly criminal case of political whitewashing, is pursuing a state of war in perpetuity, has systematically gutted funding for cancer research, has actively ignored calls for universal health care, has appointed misogynistic Creationists to prominent positions at Health and Human Services, has done next to nothing to stop the genocide in Darfur…should I keep going? Oh, the stoooopid, it BUUUUURRRRRRRNS with the fires of a thousand suns!
Ach, who am I kidding? This is, as The Rude Pundit notes, just another example of Bush's addiction to pandering to the Right:
Do you think the White House even gives a shit that it's beyond ironic and somewhere down the short road to demented to declare Sunday "National Sanctity of Human Life Day," that yearly tradition that celebrates fetuses in all their gooey glory? Do you think that they even recognize that, if you unilaterally start a war and refuse to end that war even as you cause death, destruction, and misery of amazing proportions to pregnant and non-enfetused women, you don't get to say that you declare a day that is "a reminder that we must value human life in all forms, not just those considered healthy, wanted, or convenient"?
And what with the State of the Union address in a scant two days' time, I hope you're all on the edge of your seats, eager for more of this sort of hypocritical, cynical crap — I'm especially looking forward to Bush's twisted logic on raising taxes for employees whose bad luck it is to have health insurance plans. Oh, there'll probably be more switchgrass/biofuels talk, fearmongering of the legendary hybrid "Manimal," and, of course, MARS, BITCHES!
Any speculations on what else Bush will try to scam the American people with this year?
Now go out there and celebrate National Misogyny Day!

Sept. of 2005 when a half million people gathered to march in D.C. The sign I made had that picture above of the shrub with the geeetar. In big letters above it was printed “OUR NERO”
Can’t tell you how many people wanted a picture of that sign!

Is this really possible, physiologically?
Oh, wait a minute it’s balls Beck is missing. Nevermind, carry on.
I believe a big reason why the Democratic party is starting to stir, is a result of progressive and liberal left-wing pressure. I, for one have no intention of letting up on my party, the Demos.

Ten feet of chicken-wire, and four 2×2×4′, and one can construct a fine barrier around one’s TV to protect it from flying objects.
Or so I’ve heard. Ahem.
I would hate to see what the world would look like if Bush was trying to do harm!
650,ooo dead Iraqi people, tens of thousands injured, millions have left, and been displaced, 3000 dead American soldiers, 20,ooo injured and COUNTING…COUNTING!
What can Bush say about the ‘State of the Union’ this Tuesday night? Everything’s great?
Ten feet of chicken-wire, and four 2×2×4′, and one can construct a fine barrier around one’s TV to protect it from flying objects.
Or so I’ve heard. Ahem.
Or a basket full of rolled up socks.
It wouldn’t surprise if the dead exceeded 1,000,000 before our ‘Commander’ is through
George W. Bush is a souless, consienceless, heartless, mass murdering monster. And all those who rubberstamped him, and all those who failed to speak out are accomplices.
I suffered through the last speech Bush gave. I’m not going to repeat that mistake this Tuesday night.

Oklahoma kiddo @ 22
Oh, I view it as must-see TV. I want to see how chilly his reception is from the Democratic congress. Probably 1/2 the standing ovations…
The only way to make it through the speech is to live blog it here or at some other “chosen” place. That’s how I survive it.
watertiger @ 25
I’d like to see the dems sitting on their hands. No applause, no standing. period.

Maybe we just put Bush in that cage, throw away the key and call it a day.
RevDeb @ 27
Don’t know if it’s going to be up this Tuesday night because First Draft just switched platforms, but they had a live chat for the “I’m plowing ahead with my stupid surge” speech. It was hysterical. complete with sound effects.
watertiger @ 27
I certainly support the ‘diff strokes for diff folks concept’. ;)
Sanctity of Life? If you happen to born to a privileged group, say white and Republican. Of course after you are born, tough shit, you must not be praying hard enough to the right kind of God. If you parents/parent is poor, well, it your fault, no silver spoon for you but we have a bucket and a mop and for $5.25 you can bootstrap yourself.
God will deal with these hypocrites someday, at least they will have each other for company in Hell.
I’d like to see them turn their backs and walk out.
watertiger @ 29
Ah so much one can do with sound effects. I’ll check it out. But I do like hanging out with my friends at the lake and I don’t have a meeting that night.
Preached on the SOTU today including offering what I’d like to hear. They loved it.
Though the whole thing is worth watching just to see Nancy sitting behind him.
I would want to see how many Republicans jump up and applaud when he see he will insure victory in Iraq.
Short sermon?
“I quit.”
I’ll watch with the sound off just to see Nancy look “at him as if he were a three-legged chicken or a square egg” (the way the judge in To Kill a Mockingbird looked at Bob Ewell).
jeffreyw @ 36
That was part of it.
Creature @ 34
Absolutely. At the point at which the president says “The State of the Union is Strong”; – they all get up, a la Georgetown law students with AG, and turn their backs. Upon his next statement, they walk out.
(how wrong would it be to see a mass Congressional mooning?)
I will be looking at the reaction here after our leader’s speech on Tuesday night. Count on it!
I wanna watch Dick Cheney squirm in his chair, having to sit so close to Nancy Pelosi.
At least the audience at the SOTU can’t be screened by W’s handlers. I can’t imagine there is much the fool can say to make any Democratic politician happy.
watertiger @ 41
We may have to lock them in separate cages. Gotta protect Nancy.
Anyone know where Webb is giving the response? Will it be in a quiet room or will he have an audience?
This morning on Fox News, Weekly Standard editor William Kristol said that opponents of escalation in Congress are “leap-frogging each other in the degrees of irresponsibility they’re willing to advocate.” Kristol said, “It’s just unbelievable. … It’s so irresponsible that they can’t be quiet for six or nine months,” adding, “You really wonder, do they want it to work or not? I really wonder that.”
He’ll say we need national health care. Which won’t be national, or involve actual health or care. And it won’t happen under his watch, anyway. But he’ll say it, I saw a news report on his “health care initiative” yesterday. Like the Healthy Forest thing? No thanks.
RevDeb @ 46
Webb is an excellent choice, I think, to do the rebut.
Now go out there and celebrate National Misogyny Day!
Isn’t this “Blastocysts are people, too!” day? Or is it both?
RevDeb @ 46
Wherever he is I think he will not be friendly. George has got to be dreading this as it will be paid attention to this year more than most.
Cujo359 @ 49
Well, the implication is that the blastocyst is more important than its host.
I hope they give Webb an audience – the Dem response always sounds so flat in a quiet room.

OldCoastie @ 52
That’s what was so good about Durbin’s response to Bush’s “Surge” speech – he was in front of reporters AND took questions afterward.
jayt @ 41
Could they hold up an IMPEACH NOW banner instead?
Kristine @ 56
Yeah. Or something, because my suggestion was just a joke, and a pretty stupid one at that.
An entire Democratic side of the aisle, essentially sitting on their hands, refusing to rise and applaud, and looking generally pissed-off, would be much more effective than the rather quixotic idea of seeing them get up and walk out (which would be counter-productive, truth be told).
George Bush is the president of the bacteria in my ass.
Just remember on the Sanctity of Life Day to put out a bowl of water for your wife, chained to the tree in the backyard. That is, unless it is already GOP rutting season.
Regards,
Tengrain
Someone said upthread that they were expecting about half the “standing o’s” but I expect fewer than that, given how lame and poisonous His Duckness is within his own damned party.
I’d really love it if the (D)’s actually actively showed their displeasure and disbelief at what he says — being quiet ain’t enough. Booing, back-turning, walking out, preferably mooning. They don’t have to paint their cheex blue — but hey, it wouldn’t hurt. :)
I wonder whether the pReznit will have the gumption to include the word “Iraq” in there. I would expect bad things from Congress if that were to happen. Same if he can say “Iran.”
Still I cannot actually watch it in real time. I’m all over watching Senator Jim Webb’s rebuttal, though… Give ‘im hell, Jim!

Tips for Dems at the SOTU:
1. Wear blue ties and pashminas (NO red!)
2. Sit on yer hands
3. Applaud at one line only: “Madame Speaker….”
4. Apply silence liberally!!

We’re not talking about blue do-rags here, are we?
On sanctity of life issue. NYT magazine today has a disgusting article on the movement to make it seem like those who have had abortions suffer psychologically as a result of it. Hardly the experience of the vast majority of people I know. For them – and many, many others it was a real relief to be able to have a safe healthy pregnancy termination when birth control failed, or when later in pregnancy there were major complications. This is all part of the right wing creationist linked anti-science propaganda (remember the false claims that abortions caused breast cancer?)

If, as appears likely, he talks about ‘fixing’ health care by a tax break for people with private insurance:
Can some one ask what the h*ll this does for the country, aspecially the people who can’t afford or can’t get private health insurance?
(I have friends who can afford it, but because of some twenty-years-ago problems, now gone, they can’t get insurance.)
I second the idea of the Democrats, and as many Republicans as are willing to go along, sitting on their hands.
BTW,and somewhat OT, but who the fuck does John McCain think he is, calling General Casey’s leadership “failed”?

I wish Christy — or someone — would tell the story — here at Jane’s site. I relly appreciate John Amato telling us, but I have questions!
All I heard was that Jane would be in INTENSIVE CARE until Monday. Now today, she is out of the hospital? What the ….?
Amato’s article seemed to say it was not her choice?
watertiger @ 68
If you need something ridiculous said on the Republican side, McCain seems to be your go-to guy. Casey can’t be blamed for what’s happening in Iraq any more than a plumber can be blamed for someone’s pipes freezing in winter.
Clearly, all that stomping around (and gentleman callers!) must have convinced the ICU our LadyJane was better off outta there. Given the number of hospital-borne infections folks contract nowadays, the less time in the hospital the better.
YAY, JANE!

Our Nancy doesn’t squirm.
I hope they didn’t let her go too early.
perhaps more moaning and groaning in ICU might’ve been the right course…

John is and has been an amazing support and friend to Jane … it’s great he’s gotten us this news so quickly.
We’ll have an update soon and will fill folks in … but we may not have “answers” … I’m sure as soon as there is news to share, it will be shared.
I was as surprised as anyone.
I’ll also note that Jane has terrific faith in her docs and has worked with them for years … so I’m guessing she may be much happier staying with loving friends than amongst the lights and commotion of the hospital.

I think Katie Couric needs to have Ana[l] Marie Cox on for one of her FreeSpeech segments (if CBS lets her still do those) and they can chat about being Real Girl Reporters in The Twenty-First Century. Hasn’t Ana[l] Marie passed her sell-by date? Can’t we just take away her notebook (again!!)?

In my dreams, the SOTU will only be two words long: “I resign” followed by wild cheering from the audience and rejoicing from the nation.
“He is a bit paranoid and believes the government is persecuting him, but this does not appear to be delusional,” actual statement from one of the doctors trying to determine former shrub desaparicido Jose Padilla’s sanity in Miami.
Creature @
36
Oh, that makes it even better! A basket full of rolled-up socks, ear plugs, a goodly supply of beverages, and being able to watch Nancy sitting behind him. She’ll be up too high to make donkey ears behind his head, won’t she??? Too bad…
Shell @ 82
Not surprising, actually. Hospitals (or more acurately, insurance companies) don’t want to keep anyone in a bed any longer than they have to. The longer they stay, the more it costs them. Remember, insurance companies wanted to discharge mothers the same day they gave birth; doctors had to fight with them just to let the mothers and their newborns stay overnight.
In the meantime, wishing Jane a speedy and comfortable recovery at home, surrounded by loved ones.
Siun @ 90
that may not have been the doctors’ choice, but I hope so…
Siun –
Thanks. Sorry to be so impatient, but I just wanted to be sure it was HER decision. As others have noted, hospitals sometimes kick out very ill people …..
Siun @

Not I!
Go grid go…
Want to p*ss off the powers that be? Flip the circuit breaker! Poof…no power.
Do it during the SOTU. Clack, message sent.
It’s just a matter of timing and a little moxie. Peak demand my ass. Peak push back speaks truth to power. It is up to us.
Don’t underestimate the power of no-power.
(Of course you’ll want your batteries charged so you can get the FDL play by play and also know when to flip the breakers back in time for Webb.)
Let’s just wait and see … Jane is not a fan of staying in hospitals when she can avoid it … she and I have talked about that when she was going through her tests, etc … she likes to be in homey surroundings as fast as possible and I know the folks taking care of her are strong advocates …
ANAL Marie Cox????? ROFL!
And of course the poor, who are least likely to benefit from tax cuts, are the most likely not to have health insurance…. this proposal smacks of the usual “let them eat cake” mentality of our present kakistocracy. Lemme guess, the proposal was originated by lobbyist “advisors” from the insurance industry.

okey-dokey – we just worried…
By the way … where is that montage of pictures for Jane? Will we get to see it?
OldCoastie @ 79
I’m amazed they let her stay that long. Have you checked your medical insurance lately? They try to cover almost EVERYTHING with a stay in the “23 Hour Unit,” which means you can stay overnight but you’re outta there before 24 hours are up because then the BIG charges really kick in… I’m sure W. will address this issue in the SOTU…. {listening… listening… hearing crickets far away…}
Old Coastie … nodding, I know but I also know that Jane has some very specific ideas (surprise) about what makes her feel best so I’m not going to worry unless she says we should.

Being a mother and a Bears fan, I personally, have no problem with it. I suspect she wanted to watch the game without interruption herself. It was nice of her to consider her husband in that decision.
It’s pretty sad when seeing the phrases “National Sanctity of Human Life Day” and “President Bush” together automatically triggers the “this-has-got-to-be-some-kind-of-joke” response, but that was exactly my reaction.
