Blue America is very proud to announce that Tuesday, January 23, at 4:15 PM (EST), we'll be welcoming Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) to Firedoglake for a chat about his bill "to prohibit an escalation in United States military forces in Iraq without prior authorization by Congress" (S. 308). Co-sponsored by Barbara Boxer and Ted Kennedy, Senator Dodd's legislation would prohibit U.S. combat forces being increased beyond current levels without advance approval by Congress.
Sen. Dodd stated that the authority given by Congress in 2002 to intervene in Iraq never contemplated that U.S. troops would be engaged in a civil war in Iraq, and the President must now come back to Congress to seek authorization for this new and ill-conceived mission. Sen. Dodd’s bill would also cap the number of troops at the level of troops present on January 16, 2007. Any additional increase in troop levels beyond January 16th levels must be specifically authorized by Congress.
Before we take a look at the districts Blue America was active in during the last election cycle with the idea of seeing what the congressmen and senators there are doing about Iraq, let me run down, briefly, the other proposals on the table in both houses of Congress.
Naturally the very first bill proposed to confront Bush was put up by Russ Feingold (co-sponsored by Barbara Boxer), S. 121, which calls for redeploying our forces out of Iraq within 3 months. The best known of the bills that actually seek to reign Bush in is Ted Kennedy's S. 233 (same as Rep. Ed Markey's H.R. 353) which prohibits Bush from using any funds for escalation. Although defeatist Establishment creep Dick Durbin said "Kennedy is on his own," there are seven co-sponsors:
Bernie Sanders, Barbara Boxer, Sherrod Brown, John Kerry, Tom Harkin, Pat Leahy and Bob Menendez.
Rep. Markey's House version has 18 co-sponsors:
Neil Abercrombie, Mike Capuano, John Conyers, Pete DeFazio, Bill Delahunt, Rosa DeLauro, Raul Grijalva, Maurice Hinchley, Barbara Lee, Carolyn Maloney, Jim McDermott, James McGovern, Martin Meehan, John Olver, Jan Schakowsky, Mike Thompson, John Tierney and Peter Welch.
The cowardly way out for the Democrats who want to go on record opposing Bush but who are afraid to do something "drastic" (like stop the war) is the Biden-Hagel-Levin bill introduced a couple days ago, the nonbinding symbolic thing. Olympia Snowe has signed on as a co-sponsor and it has wide support by the Inside-the-Beltway Democratic crowd, the Reids and Durbins and Hoyers and Emanuels. This is the one McConnell and Lieberman say they will filibuster and Bush says he'll ignore. HUGE waste of time.
A couple of Democrats running for president who want to give the impression they are leading a parade they've pretty much ignored, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, are about to introduce bills capping the number of troops which sounds suspiciously like the Dodd bill.
Aside from Markey's bill, the House has a dozen pending, from an all-encompassing bill by Lynn Woolsey (H.R. 508) that requires "disengagement from Iraq," with 16 co-sponsors:
Barbara Lee, Maxine Waters, Diane Watson, James McGovern, Raul Grijalva, Dennis Kucinich, Barney Frank, Maurice Hinchey, John Conyers, Jerrold Nadler, Chaka Fattah, Bob Filner, William Clay, Donald Payne, Steve Cohen, and Sheila Jackson Lee
to a right wing bill (H.R, 511) calling for stay the course by Sam Johnson, an extremist from Texas and co-sponsored by the GOP House leaders and a bunch of the biggest kooks in the House (all Republicans, of course):
Blunt, Boehner, Putnam, plus Eric Cantor, Peter King, Duncan Hunter, Bill Young, Thaddeus McCotter, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Steve Buyer, Tom Cole, John Carter, David Dreier, Jerry Lewis, Kay Granger, and Peter Hoekstra.
A lot of the other bills seek to prevent Bush from attacking Iran, including a congressional resolution (33) by Pete DeFazio and a similar one by Republican Walter Jones (with 11 Democratic co-sponsors and no Republicans signing on except Libertarian Ron Paul). Sam Farr has a bill, H.R. 413, that seeks to repeal the 2002 authorization Congress gave Bush to use the military in Iraq (no co-sponsors) and the most dangerous one to Bush is Jack Murtha's bill to deny Bush funds to use to escalate the war.
In the last election cycle Blue America worked actively in congressional districts and states (in Senate races), collecting money and placing radio and TV spots. I think it's fair to ask which of the congressmen and senators are supporting Bush and which are opposing him on his escalation plans.
House Members:
– Mike Arcuri (NY-24). We raised $6,335.86 and he is opposing Bush.
— Brian Bilbray (CA-50). We raised $22,796.43 for his opponent, Francine Busby, who lost and Bilbray is supporting escalation.
— Mary Bono (CA-45). We raised $6,745.86 for her opponent, Dave Roth. Bono is for escalation.
— Bruce Braley (IA-01). We raised $5,525.86 and he is opposing Bush.
— Ginny Brown-Waite (FL-05). We raised $3,264.05 for Rick Penberthy in the primary and he lost. True to form she's rubber stamping the stay the course approach.
— Vern Buchanan (FL-13). We raised $1,238.24 for Jan Schneider in the primary and she lost. Vern, a right wing extremist is petrified that he'll lose in 2008 and he says he's leaning towards supporting Bush.
— Chris Carney (PA-10). We raised $8,210.86 and he won in a solidly Republican district and he's opposing Bush
— Henry Cuellar (TX-28). We raised $27,925.92 for Ciro Rodriguez in the primary and Ciro lost that one but won a seat in a neighboring district. Cuellar, in a relatively rare break with Bush, is opposing escalation. Ciro (TX-23) hasn't taken a position but he is expected to oppose Bush.
— John Doolittle (CA-04). We collected $25,015.86 for Charlie Brown and our PAC ran radio spots for him. Doolittle is petrified to face him again in 2008 and he has refused to take a position on escalation so far, although he is expected to vote with Bush as usual.
— Phil English (PA-03). We raised $5,630.86 for Steve Porter. English has made some tepid statements about opposing escalation but there is virtually no chance he will vote in a meaningful way against Bush.
— Virginia Foxx (NC-05). We raised $5,255.86 for Roger Sharpe. Foxx, one of the most radical rightists in the House is supporting stay the course, of course.
— Jim Gerlach (PA-06). We raised $11,771.43 for Lois Murphy. Gerlach says he is leaning toward supporting Bush.
— Kirstin Gillibrand (NY-20). We donated $10,136.43 to her campaign. She opposes escalation.
— Virgil Goode (VA-05). We raised $3,560.84 for Al Weed. Goode, aside from being an insane racist, supports Bush on escalation but doesn't want him spending any money on rebuilding Iraq.
— John Hall (NY-19). We contributed $12,170.86 and he opposes escalation.
— Jane Harman (CA-36). We raised $2,547.15 for her primary opponent, Marcy Winograd. Harman has substantially changed her stances on the war and has come out against escalation, knowing full well that if she steps out of line she will have another bitter primary.
— Denny Hastert (IL-14). We raised $20,075.86 for John Laesch and bought radio spots in the district. Hastert hasn't let on how he feels about the escalation plans but it is inconceivable that he will vote against Bush.
— Robin Hayes (NC-08). We raised $10,875.86 for Larry Kissell who came within a handful of votes of defeating Hayes. Hayes is supporting escalation.
— Paul Hodes (NH-02). We donated $5,830.86 to his campaign and he is opposing escalation.
— Peter King (NY-03). We raised $9,760.86 for Dave Mejias. King supports escalation.
— John Kline (MN-02). We raised $22,091.43 for Coleen Rowley and ran a newspaper ad on her behalf. Kline aggressively supports escalation.
— Randy Kuhl (NY-29). We raised $11,170.86 for Eric Massa. Kuhl supports Bush's escalation plans.
— Doug Lamborn (CO-05). We raised $6,690.86 for Jay Fawcett. Lamborn is a gung-ho escalator.
— Tom Mahoney (FL-16). We raised $464.21 for Dave Lutrin who was forced out of the primary by Rahm Emanuel. Mahoney is tepidly opposing escalation, although not in a meaningful way.
— Thaddeus McCotter (MI-11). We raised $10,070.84 for Tony Trupiano and ran TV spots against McCotter. McCotter, though a member of the GOP leadership team is too scared to take a public position on this although it is certain he will support Bush as he always does.
— Buck McKeon (CA-25). We raised $27,925.92 for Robert Rodriguez and ran radios spots against McKeon. McKeon says he is "leaning" towards stay the course; big surprise (not)!
— Jerry McNerney (CA-11). We raised $25,140.86. He hasn't taken a public position although one of his staffers told me yesterday he expects him to come out against escalation next week.
— Brad Miller (NC-13). The only incumbent we asked our members to contribute to. He has come out against escalation.
— Chris Murphy (CT-05). We placed radio spots against Nancy Johnson, the incumbent. Chris hasn't taken a public stand yet.
— Patrick Murphy (PA-08). We raised $7,690.86 for him. He's come out swingin' against escalation in strong and meaningful terms and is a co-sponsor of Murtha's bill to cut off funds.
— Marilyn Musgrave (CO-04). We raised $15,446.43 for Angie Paccione and ran radio spots against Musgrave. She says she is leaning towards escalation.
— Mean Jean Schmidt (OH-02). We raised $27,031.42 for Victoria Wulsin and ran radio spots on her behalf. Mean Jean is keeping her head down and not saying anything. She is expected to continue supporting "stay the course."
— Joe Sestak (PA-07). We raised $13,500.86 for Admiral Sestak and he is opposing escalation.
— Tom Tancredo (CO-06). We raised $6,695.84 for Bill Winter. Tancredo is too busy rabble rousing against immigrants to make up his mind on anything else but he says he's "leaning" towards supporting escalation.
— Al Wynn (MD-4). We raised $6,600.00 for Donna Edwards and she lost the primary. Wynn knows she will challenge him again and he is watching his p's and q's. He is opposing Bush on this and has signed on as a co-sponsor for Murtha's bill.
Senators:
– Sherrod Brown (OH). We collected $3,573.43 for him before he voted for Bush's torture bill which caused us to stop collecting money for him though we still prayed he'd win. He did and he's opposing Bush's escalation in the true sense.
— Ben Cardin (MD). We raised $8,105.86 for him and he's opposing escalation.
— Russ Feingold (WI). We contributed $6,505.86 for Russ' leadership PAC and, of course, he's taking a leading role in opposing Bush.
— Amy Kobuchar (MN). We raised $5,491.43 for Amy. She opposes escalation.
— Joe Lieberman (CT). We raised $77,141.43 for Ned Lamont. Lieberman criticizes Bush for not sending enough troops. He's further right on this than almost anyone in the Senate from either party.
— John Tester (MT). We raised $16,985.84 for him. He's opposing Bush.
— James Webb (VA). We ran TV spots for him. He's opposing Bush.

Howie !!
ROOTZ & JANE!!!
A funding cut and a ‘pull out’ is what this Democrat wants.
Good work, Howie. Sen. Dodd gives me hope on this. Let’s show up and ask him some good questions on the possibility of a widening war, too.
Ed*ard Teller @ 6
He is going to make a special announcement that is nearer and dearer to FDL hearts than to many other folks. It’s exciting that he’s making it with us. I don’t want to spoil his surprise but definately be there Tuesday.
It may be a good idea to limit the number of Lieberman slams while Dodd is on.
Remember that right or wrong they are (or were) friends.
Let’s all bring our brightest and most intelligent game to this chat.
Questions like, what about Iran? Perhaps?
Oh… and what to do about the Palestinian-Israeli ‘problem’? Maybe?
Howie Klein @ 6
More waiting !!
Wow Howie! Dodd here chatting with us about his bill!!!! Great news!
Cool! Right before the
STFUSOTUBalrog @ 8
That’s very cool of you to say. Thanks. I’m not into censoring anyone but I’m in the middle of negotiating with guests who are nervous about coming on with us. It looks like Hoyer chickened out after promising he’d do it. Van Hollen still says “yes, but…” and now I’m talking to the Hillary folks.
Howie, is this our first BlueAmerica visit from a sitting Senator? Regardless, congratulations to you on this “get!” Especially given the Lamont activism of FDL and BA, having Senator Dodd come for a chat is just terrific. For myself, I promise not to call his co-Senator RGJoe for the duration of the Dodd chat….

Heh. I thought the same thing last night.
The roundup of Blue America efforts and how they translate into opposition or support for Bush is really interesting … Thanks Howie!
I’m thinking it’s time to send a little message to some of our winners who are keeping their heads down …
And folks – consider setting up a monthly contribution to the BlueAmerica Pac here:
http://www.actblue.com/page/blueamerica08
I’ve set up a small monthly amount so we can get to work now for even bigger success in 08!
Preventing “esclation” in Iraq seems to imply ‘business as usual’. If so, That doesn’t cut it.

My experience with candidates at fdl during Blue America sessions last Fall was that If I asked a direct question to the guest regarding the problems in the occupied territories and Gaza, or about Israel’s conduct during the Hizbolah War, the answers I got from them were canned, unimaginative and very carefully parsed. Or, as in the case of Rep. Sestak, the answers were no different from an answer one might expect from W or Olmert. Or the candidate would completely ignore me. Dodd will take either the first or third option, OKk.
Siun @ 16
The thing about today’s piece I was most disappointed about was my inability– so far– to be able to figure out which congressmen opposing escalation were willing to go out and back one of the plans that REALLY reigns in Bush instead of the symbolic crap. Eventually that will all be revealed I’m sure. Every day we find more and more people signing on as co-sponsors for example.
I just have to get this off my chest:
Hillary Clinton – please. just. go. away.
Ed*ard Teller @ 18
The question definately seems like a real third rail in American politics. There is virtually no real discussion of the issue– even less than in Israel!!
One of these non-escalation bills should include a requirement that W not make war on the Iranian people. I would also like to see the current GWOT-AUMF re-visited.
Also, Senate Dems should make a big stink about the GOP attempt to give this President a line-item veto. The American people made it very clear on 11/07/06 that the current President is NOT to be given more power! GOP Senators should be called out on their brazen attempt to tie up ethics reform with the line-item veto. The L-I/V comes up again next Wednesday, I believe, according to the Reid-Byrd-McConnell agreement, and I wanna see some fur fly!!
…oh, and:

Oklahoma kiddo @ 23
saved you the trouble of saying it yourself….
punaise @ 20
That ain’t gonna happen. She’s here and we have to deal with it. Odds are she’ll be the Democrat running against a much, much worse candidate nominated by the Republicans in 2008. Right now we have to figure out if there’s a better Democrat who we can help get the nomination or if we need to just accept that Hill’s our man and go from there. It’s kind of depressing. I’ve always been interested in congressional races than presidential races in a certain sense. At least with congressional races we can make a difference. Like I said, though, I’ve invited Clinton to join us for a chat and they’re at least taking the invitation seriously enough to talk about it.
TeddySanFran @ 22
There are like a half dozen bills pending demanding that Bush not attack Iran. And Kucinich says if Bush attacks Iran, impeachment is on the table.
I’ll say this for Senator Dodd. I appreciate him, and respect him for coming here. And I won’t ask any embarrassing questions. Promise.
Howie @ #21,
Far less open discussion on this in the USA than in Israel. If only we had a rational, durable way to forge communication links between the many Israeli peace activists on the left and this emerging, new progressive leadership in the Democratic Party that you’re working so hard to build, we might be able move beyond that stifling paradigm.
Balrog @ 8
I may have to sit that one out :~)
I hope to find out soon if my congressman, the very much appreciated Rep. Zack Space, is going to speak out strongly or otherwise against escalation.
I’m not even considering other options. He reads the newspapers around here, he knows how unpopular this war is in this part of Ohio.
yes, Punaise that might be a good idea… we are all aware of the limitlessness of your contempt!
;~}
Howie Klein @ 25
Howie, Hillary is very popular in my area, OH-18. I don’t bring her name up but if I talk to people about voting, they always bring her up; they want her. Grocery clerks, Wal-Mart cashiers, repairmen, gas station attendents. I was surprised.
Reid yesterday: “Much has been made about President Bush’s recent saber rattling toward Iran. This morning, I’d like to be clear: The President does not have the authority to launch military action in Iran without first seeking Congressional authorization– the current use of force resolution for Iraq does not give him such authorization.”
I agree with Balrog. We want FDL to be a welcoming forum for leading Democrats to discuss policy. Although my contempt for Lieberman continues, I think we should be sensitive to Dodd’s friendship with him. Should be an interesting conversation on Tuesday.
Speaking of some Blue america. It’s getting a little bluer in this red state. A local clear channel radio station has been bought back.
They are putting on Ed Schultz and looks like they are kicking Rush to the curb. Woo & Hoo.
Howie Klein @ 25
there was a time when I could have gotten quite enthusiatic about an HRC nomination. that time has passed as her transparentr calculations have played out. of course, she’d get my vote against any Rethug nominee. I’ll be glad to give her the benefit of the doubt if she shows up here to chat, which would be quite brave of her. didn’t want to sidetrack the thread.
Margot @ 32
I find the same… everywhere. Yesterday I flew up to Oakland and I sat between two African-American women. We got into a discussion of politics and they both were leaning towards Clinton over Obama (but still have their minds open).
Oklahoma kiddo @ 27
I probably won’t be around. Tuesdays and Thursdays are shaping up to be 15-hr-long monsters for me this semester. Looking forward to reading it later, mostly.
Dodd’s sole chairmanship is in Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, so doggies might brush up on his record in that realm. Also, Dodd is least progressive, it seems to me, on the issue of the emergence of the elected left in Latin America. He has layers of corporate ties to the World Bank-type shills who have hurt Latino Americano economies so badly over the past 25 years.
One strategy for House leadership might be to let 511 come up for a vote, to get the waverers to declare whether they are in favor of “stay-the-course.” Kinda like when the 109th GOP leaders brought the Murtha resolution up for a vote suddenly. A vote on 511 would show America that while the Democrats might vary on their degree of opposition to the SURGE, there’s very limited support for it. Constituents would have a clear picture of their Congresscritters’ position if 511 had an up-or-down vote.
Welcoming any dem who is willing to come and chat with us sounds good to me. We can ask clear questions and let them know how we feel about the issues without making it a painful experience and that will do more to move our goals forward than simply making them wish they’d never heard of FDL … we have to think like lobbyists and keep our eyes on the prize!
I’m sure they are Howie. Hillary is having her first live streaming web chats called “Let the Conversation Begin” starting this week on the 22nd, as announced on her site:
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/…..tion/?sc=8
I would think she will be looking to reach out to the bigger blogs-netroots-grassroots as part of her new campaign blitz. She needs to hear our well informed sides if nothing else.
palosi was great, she said specifically the president was rushing troops into harms way because the democrats would never keep funding from the troops that need it, so he’s sending as many as he can before we prevent the funding
the administrations spokes people said that statement was “poisenous”…AS IF SENDING TROOPS WITHOUT CONGRESS APPROVAL ISN’T POISONOUS!!!
then the spokesperson had the NERVE to say Nancy broke her promise to act “bi partisan”, and he had the NERVE to say she broke her promise to be civil
HEY, SPOKESPERSON…PAY ATTENTION HERE;
the PRESIDENT broke his promise to act bi partisan, NOT nancy, the PRESIDENT broke his promise to act civil when he sent troops WITHOUT congress approval
the PRESIDENT broke his promise to act bi particen when he shopped and shopped and shopped until he FINALLY found someone that thinks his RIDICULOUS plan MIGHT work
where do these people come up with their line of reasoning?
Howie,
This is great news!
Thanks for all the links, I look forward to reading the details before Senator Dodd makes his debut at the lake.
At last, the conversation has changed and we must encourage or drag as many members of congress as far away from the idea that it’s fine to just stop the escalation, stay out of Iran and maintain the occupation.
I was fortunate enough to catch Woolsey on cspan this week reading parts of her excellent proposal. I sure hope it gets more traction.
The irony of this is Boxer Supported HOJO all the way in November.
I never see my own anger at her reflected by anyone else at FDL. Boxer is NOT anti-war. I don’t give a rip how many ineffective “bills” she co-sponsors. When the rubber hit the road, and she had a chance to support a true, anti-war candidate, she punted.
Barbara Boxer is Pro-War. Never doubt it.
Wondering if other Democratic candidates for prez in ‘08 will exhibit the same courage Senator Dodd is showing by coming into the lions lair? Just by coming here Senator Dodd gets me to thinking. Hmmm.
personally I like the idea hilary is running right now, the republicans will motor up for a contest against her and hopefully the others will be able to get less of their attention
I doubt hilary will win the nomination so I’m glad she’s running right now
Ed*ard Teller @ 38
I did not know this.
That’a a good point perris. Let Hillary take all the energy of the right-wing smear machine, and let Gore slip into the fray after the primaries are already underway. At least that’s how my dream goes.
Getting Dodd is a good score. Thanks Howie!
Guitar … Boxer is not a favorite of FDL and I suspect we are not a favorite of hers … it was Jane who highlighted Boxer’s statements at YKOS and made it clear she was not to be trusted on Lieberman
Thanks for that, Siun. Is there a transcript of Jane’s remarks anywhere? I’d love to read them.
During the wars in El Salvaor and Nicaragua, Dodd positioned himself as the liberal spokesman for restraint and new policies but endorsed methods that were not progressive – for example, calling for cutting funding in half rather than stopping it all together when we knew those funds were fueling the death squads. I hope he has learned to push for real change in the intervening years.
I refuse to let the DLC, Rahm, Bill and others force Hillary Clinton down my throat.
Howie. Thank you for all the hard work keeping the pressure on thru BlueAmerica.
nit-picking: paragraph 4, line 4 “rein” eh? (sorry, as an old horsie-person, i always seem to hiccup over that one)
AND…
A BIG OVERSIZE HUG for your nice words about Sherrod Brown here. It feels so-o-o-o good to this Ohio-an to have him in the Senate. YeeHaw! I don’t expect him to disappoint ya ;->
Siun @ 51
So if, someone were to question Senator Dodd when he’s here about these things, would these questions be considered ‘in-bounds’?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 45
I’ll invite them all, I guess.
I heard Lieberman on NPR last night– talking about how he’ll join Mitch McConnell in filibustering the nonbinding symbolic resolution and how Bush isn’t sending enough troops into Iraq– and I was thinking how great it would be to have him come over for an hour of chit chat with us.
Hi Howie,
I haven’t had a chance to thank you for the efforts you made (and providing us the opportunity) in helping to regain congress. Thank you!
It may already be archived somewhere, but it would be interesting to see the margin of loss by the Blue America candidates. Can anyone point me to that place?
Not to be rude, but are the following comments an example of why some folks would be nervous about a guest appearance?
I appreciate any guest who takes us seriously enough to find out what we think. I’m likely to ask a tough question if any, but nothing that would be rude or embarrassing. I wouldn’t make a big deal if my question goes ignored. Either its an honest mistake or avoiding the question, which is the guests choice, can also be the answer in itself.
I’ll behave properly, if it helps to know that.
Howie Klein @ 55
He wouldn’t have the guts. See? I am practicing minding my manners – I really meant something other than “guts”.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 45
We can end up being like Colbert. Come on our show our face the ‘Smear Card’ deck.
My opponent smokes marijuana!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 52
Rahm is in a weird position. Of course he’s a Bill Clinton loyalist but he and Hillary have a nasty bit of history between them. He’d be supporting her anyway I imagine except it’s not politically palatable in Illinois Democratic circles right now to support anyone but Obama. And Rahm has no base in Illinois whatsoever. He’s just the Daley Machine rep and can’t go against the Machine. He serves at their pleasure.
One more thing about the Dodd appearance here – it would seem likely that Tim Tagaris played a role in encouraging Dodd to speak to us (Tim recently took a job on Dodd’s campaign staff). If so, I give Dodd a lot of credit for listening to Tim, and I think this is an indication that Dodd may really want to engage in dialogue with the netroots.

I met Sen. Dodd at a Ned event the weekend before the Nov. election. He had been traveling all over the state with Ned on the bus and was a strong trooper for Ned. Good man. Let’s treat him well. The fact that he has to deal with RGJoe means that he needs to test his food when they sit together and try hard to keep his food down in Joe’s presence. It’s more than I’d be able to do.

Howie’s recently back from three or four South American countries – can’t remember if he crossed the border into Brazil when he was at the falls – so he might have some insights on Argentina, especially, which he can use as an entry for Dodd to share his insights with us. Besides Siun’s comments re the El Salvador War (I’d forgotten about that one, Siun!), Dodd has been too critical of Chavez and of the situation in Equador. IMHO…..
rumi @ 57
I don’t think softballs do anyone any good. The tough questions need to be asked.
My concern was the Juck Foe stuff that is fun when we don’t have guests, but is probably not appropriate Tuesday.
reelect al gore.
if not him, reelect john edwards, a good man with a great wife.
susan @ 56
You can see the final votes for every district in the country– including who won and who lost and by how much among the Blue America candidates– here. That page opens to the California results but you can search in any state you want.
punaise @ 20
I’ll second that sentiment.
I will admit I’m a bit curious about the “surprise,” since Dodd has already announced that he will be a candidate for President next term. I like Dodd okay, but I like a lot of the Senators (including Richardson and even, try not to kill me, Joe Biden, who I think is one of those flame throwers we’re always saying we want.) Still, my choice is Gore for so many reasons I can’t count them.
*xyz @ 61
Tim’s the man. He’s doing all the set up work and convinced the higher-ups in the campaign that FDL is a good venue for Dodd.
I’m excited about hearing Jim Webb’s response to the SOTU and wondering about that enlightened choice by Reid or consensus?
I hope they let him go full on and don’t castrate him. – sorry …
I’m going to have to backpedal a bit on Dodd and Chavez. He’s made critical statements – after Chavez’s UN appearance, for instance, but now I’ve found some positive stuff on Chavez by Dodd. For instance, I pulled this from his wikipedia entry:
In January 2005, he met with Venezuelan President Hugo Chvez in an effort to mend the strained relations between the two countries. Dodd stressed the need for closer ties, both economically and in the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking. In that occasion, he said that that Chvez has “demonstrated he was Venezuela’s legitimate democratically elected president by winning a national referendum (on August 15th, 2004)…We know there have been problems between the two countries, but today is a new year and we are here to find out if we can begin a new relationship,” adding, “It is not worthwhile to continue speaking of what is in the past. I hope we can overcome this.”
It might be very informative to get a Latin America update from Sen. Dodd.
Balrog @ 64
yeah, I leave the softball questions for the media professionals :-)
I was just trying to get a feel for the groundrules based on a few comments in the original post. I think we learn more by avoiding insult and personal attack. but I also saw a hint of it in the post.
Hillary for instance has never been at the top of my list of candidates but I think she deserves a big thanks or recognition for going to Iraq as a member of the Armed Service Committee. It seems most candidates don’t get credit when they should if it is campaign season(always)

Yeah, if she were on my chest I’d want her to go away, too.
That said, I will vote for her if she ends up being THE candidate.
Cut Hillary some slack? Well… that is an interesting concept. Let me give this some thought. ;)
Emily’s List has already endorsed HRC … just sayin in case anyone here normally contributes to them.
Gore, Clark, Edwards, Feingold, Kucinich, Pelosi, Murtha. Dodd perhaps. So much Demo talent out there.
Siun @ 78
Last call I got from them asking me to renew I said no thanks. That was before I heard they were endorsing Hil. If I’d known then, I would have told them why.
I just hate to see Democrats tearing down other Democrats especially when the differences are being obscured. I don’t know which plan is best to counter Bush’s escalation, but I’m sure it has more substance than political intent(ambition) as implied in the post.
We’re at a time of Constitutional crisis and will be until this administration is brought back into check. I don’t know what all that will require, yet, but it could be a non-binding resolution of no confidence to show the world that we can still be trusted.
OT – Carter speaking Live on CSPAN
O.M.G. Lunch hour almost over – skimmed post – yes, yes, yes! I may have to develiop a virus about the middle of Tues afternoon so I can follow this chat.
In skimming I did notice Cuellar’s name on the oppose list….damn! he must have learned something from the election. Amazing.
Ok, back to work, behave firepuppies (or not) while I’m gone.
Yes… I will probably vote Hillary, if that’s what’s ‘Rahmmed’ down my throat. But do I have to like it?
Howie, I think you have a formatting error in your post under House Members: Mary Bono. It looks like the language on Bruce Braley should be a separate line item.

GPB—I was about three feet away from Jane when Boxer made her comments at YKos. Suffice it to say, I saw a whole ‘nother side of Ms. H. at that moment and it’s something I hope is never directed my way.
twolf1 @ 82
I’m there. Thanks for the heads-up!
RBG – you got that right! Jane made her reaction oh so clear … yet never had to open her mouth … Boxer got the message and then some!
EPU’d from last thread (but give me a break it’s 6:30 am Sunday here)but if Jane would like an upgrade to DC from LAX and is willing to fly on UA I have a heap of them and would be happy to contribute, they mount up commuting to Oz. Just send me an email (Trex has the addy).
President Carter on CSPAN amazes. He is telling it like it is.

Care to give me a synopsis? the idea of Jane being angry at Boxer makes me remarkably happy. =:-O
I’m certain all FDL folks will treat any guest with respect. There’s a great reputation for civility to be maintained here.
About EMILY’s List. Given their mission to support pro-choice women, I don’t see a way for them to sit out 2008. Their Clinton endorsement seems exactly right.
But for those of us who’ve supported EMILY’s list in the past, it’s excellent that they’ve made their early endorsement known and transparent.
This is one of the many powerful networks in play for Hillary in the coming year. I wonder what the staging is for the distaff Senate Democrats to endorse her candidacy. Seems like nothing’s left to chance; I expect these endorsements will roll out like clockwork.
Pete – thanks for that! I have some UA miles I could toss in (tho my real account is with American – all those upgrades and never a chance to use them!)
twolf1 @ 82
Hell, re-elect Carter. He’d be better than Hillary.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 91
I was hoping to record it but didn’t. Did I misread the schedule?
Siun, I hope, when the time comes, we’ll have someone with the skeleton-free closet and the cash to take a hard run at Boxer.
All her grandstanding about the war now, after her undivided support for Hojo, even now, leaves me shaking with rage. I certainly would be happy to help anyone willing to go after her.
GPB – I was across the room playing media hostess and from my vantage point, Jane was sitting with her laptop open blogging as Boxer spoke (if you have ever been in a room with Jane, you can picture this)and as Boxer answered Tom Curry (who I love – great reporter!) that laptop was closed with a snap … Nicole, our broadcast goddess, and I went “wow!” … then Jane very quietly but very clearly stood and walked out on Boxer … it was a perfect moment – complete class and very strong message to BB. I have never seen anyone deliver such a definite message with such total panache!
Howie, thanks so much, as always.
I’m going to try to ask Dodd (very politely) when is Congress going to start pointing out that Bush/Cheney’s reign of terror has only helped extremists everywhere? See the assasination of the Armenian journalist Dink in Turkey yesterday, who was contributor to the Lehrer News Hour. Congress can score debating points on deescalation, but the fact is that the ME and the world were much better off with Saddam in charge in Iraq than Bush/Cheney. I’m not sure if the US is quite ready for that soundbyte, but we’re a lot closer than we were.
I don’t want the Democrats to call for a draft, but I’m sick of them ignoring Bush’s bluff/rhetoric about “winning,” about how “serious” this is, and that Iraq is the “front line” in the GWOT. If all those are true, why has Bush not sent in more troops and reinstituted the draft?
OT, IIRC, Boxer’s only support of Lieberman4Lieberman came in the primary? IIRC, after the primary, she issued a written statement supporting the winner of the Democratic primary and sending Ned money? When I look at tough votes about debating ScAlito for example, suddenly, Barbara looks pretty damn good, relative to all the other Vichy Dems.
OT, similar for Dodd, iirc, relative to most Democrats, he opposed Lieberman4Lieberman relatively strongly.
Siun @ 95
Siun – if Jane is going to travel in early Feb and wants to use my upgrades please let me know by 1/28 as I have sign them over at an airport and I’ll be traveling that day. I’ll need her PNR (confirmation number) or flight details.
Happy to do it.
Pete – I’ll keep you informed!
Thanks!
Howie, How impressive, I’m in awe with what you do!!!!!! I hope to have the opportunity to ask what us liberals in the south can do to help spread the escalation message. It amazes me that in GA a lot still think that Saddam was involved with 9/11.
twolf1 @ 97
I am showing here that that the carter thing will continue in a bit. What a wonderful way to spend a very snowy Sunday afternoon. With the President, J.E. Carter!
petedownunder rocks!!!
Boxer was silent about the CT race after the primary. She gave tepid lip service to “supporting Connecticut Democrat’s choice,” immediately after the primary, but during the general campaign, none of her fund-raising mailers (email) mentioned Lamont. They mentioned every other goddamed Dem candidate but never Ned.
Like so many Beltway dems, she chose to throw Ned under the bus with her silence.
She deserves to be taken down.
Howie Klein @ 25
Howie, have you invited Edwards? I think he’s the best of the bunch right now. I read somewhere that he is the candidate Rove most feared in 2004.
While I was as unhappy as anyone with Barbara Boxer’s support of RGJoe — and worked hard behind the scenes to understand and change it! — a primary challenge would be a futile, wasted effort. I certainly hope that California Democrats have learned our lesson from the grueling Westly/Angelides gubernatorial nomination fight: Arnold went live with Westly’s charges against Angelides the day after the bruising Democratic primary.
Let’s save our energy to fight the real Vichy Dems, not those who are only 95% pure like Barbara Boxer. Recall she endorsed NED, which certainly cost her something in whatever calculus drove her make her Connecticut pre-primary trip for RGJoe. I imagine she’s still paying for that later support, as are they all. Our nation suffers with RGJoe — and that’s a lesson all Senate Democrats are learning every single day.
JPL @ 103
There are only a tiny handful of Democrats in safe blue districts still voting like Republicans and 2 are in Georgia. Jim Marshall is in a red district and that helps explain why he votes with the Repugs but both David Scott and John Barrow (even after the latest gerrymander) are in blue districts. They should both be primary-ed.
MayDaze @ 107
I sure have. No response. Button down, uptight campaign. I’ve even met him and he knows I voted for him in the CA primary last time.
yes, Howie, please invite Edwards. And Gore. We need to get Gore to come on here and have 600 or so comments asking him to PLEASE run.
Can I just ask Senator Dodd if he chats with Leibermann about his position on the Katrina investigations?
Not a quibble, but I’ve noticed the frequent use of the verb “reign” as in “reign Bush in,” when “rein” is what is meant. What makes it interesting, though, is that it’s not far from another point, which is that Bush does indeed exhibit intent to “reign,” as a sovereign would with unchecked power.
I’m going to see Jane in the hospital now. Let everyone know about Tuesday afternoon and I hope I see you all back here so we can help Senator Dodd understand what people Outside-the-Beltway have on their minds.
oregondave @ 113
That drives me crazy. I’m glad I’m not alone. I thought it was just me.
oregondave @ 113
Thanks! These FDL editors!!!!
Maydaze: “Howie, have you invited Edwards? I think he’s the best of the bunch right now. I read somewhere that he is the candidate Rove most feared in 2004.”
I’ve said it before, but I believe any Rove or GOP quotes about Dem candidates need to be flipped on their heads to understand them.
In 04 they talked about “wanting” Dean and what a “formidable” candidate Kerry was.
They were scared to death of Dean and knew they could successfully smear the “french-looking” Kerry. Look how that turned out.
Now they have already made comments about Hillary being a “formidable” candidate and have taken potshots at Edwards and his “too good looks”, etc. They don’t want anything to do with Edwards and his Two America’s or Gore imo.

from Howies post
Walter Jones has been on cspan as the only republican in meetings with serious reservations about the war. I can’t help but think this man could be an ally in ending the occupation. Does anyone here know more about his proposal?
This little article is all my limited searching skills can find.
rat bastahd @ 117
I agree with you on the misdirection from Rethugs and their enablers in the MSM. I think that’s why Hillary and Obama are getting all the play – the rethugs think they can be beaten.
I think you may be wrong on Edwards, though. Wish I could remember where I read it, but it was not through the normal channels.

Seconded.
CSPAN – Mr. and Mrs Carter will be taking questions starting at 4PM. Please don’t turn to CSPAN just yet though as they are playing Chimpy’s radio address.
There’s got to be a way to stop the Hill!
And we love you for it! Just spoke to my club, Democrats of the Desert, to remind everyone that Mary Bono voted against Jack Murtha’s motion to prevent torture by US service personnel back in Dec. 2005. She’s still a rubberstamp for Bush, even now. I cannot wait for 2008 to shed ourselves of her for good.
Thanks again, Howie. You were magnificent last year.
OK, it is once again safe to watch C-SPAN… Chimpy’s radio address is over. The Carters up soon…
Hillary Clinton “Headliners and Legends” on MSNBC now.

Maydaze, which Edwards part don’t you agree with? Not sure what you meant exactly.
This is the stock that Chris Dodd comes from, our previous CT Senator, Thomas Dodd:
.
Thanks to Howie for giving Chris the opportunity to have a dialogue with FDL folks.
Looking forward to Tuesday.
After Bush vetoes the bill, will the Senate have the votes to override his veto?

CONGRATULATIONS to California Democratic Delegate soyinkafan!
Uh oh. My congresscritter Chris Dodd is coming a calling at FDL? I suppose we’ll have to keep conversation limited to the legislation and not perhaps the unmentionable *whisper Holy Joe*.
mui @ 136
Yeah, welcome to Nedville…)
mui @ 136
He was a good strong Ned supporter after the primary, a fact that RGJoe probably reminds him of every day. I have a lot of respect for Dodd for doing that and he deserves our thanks at least for that.
rat bastahd @ 132
I meant the part where you said that Rove fearing Edwards was misdirection. I vaguely recall that my source (whoever it was) had the real skinny and not just more rethug propaganda.
I’m pleased I’ve seen the day a woman is seeking the presidency and a woman who is supremely qualified although not without real and imaginary faults.
RevDeb @ 138
RevDeb I don’t dispute you. Dodd and HoJoe go back a long way though and it’s bound to be a sensitive point. HoJoe on his side is still apparently acting very childishly vindictive.
“I meant the part where you said that Rove fearing Edwards was misdirection. I vaguely recall that my source (whoever it was) had the real skinny and not just more rethug propaganda.”
What I tried to say was that they are taking early shots at Edwards in hopes of derailing his candidacy early because they are indeed afraid of him.
Whereas they’re talking Hillary up because they think they can beat her.
I’m not so sure anymore and like OK Kiddo I’ve long believed Hillary would get beat. Don’t see McCain as being as strong as I thought he would be last year, and noone else has really picked up his slack. Still, there are like 45% of Americans who consistently say they will never vote for Hillary. That’s a big #.

Just for the record Boxer did in fact generate wrathful comments before and after she stubbornly hit the ground in CT for JoeHo in addition to yours. Rest assured your comments unquestionlly deserve a Lead by Doing gold star here at FDL. I’m just saying that it is hard to quantify the actual numbers of we Golden Staters who cannot forgive her including at least three of her own staff and two major donors. Speaking only for myself certainly – rest assured Sen. Boxer has only herself to blame for her monumental arrogance and betrayal of this once devoted constituent.
rat bastahd @ 142
Sorry, guess I misunderstood.
No biggie Maydaze. Im just very curious about how others feel about it too. Picking brains…

Three of her staff huh? I’d like to read more about that if you care to share. No staff names needed but I’d sure like to know who the donors are. Maybe they can help line up a challenger for the ‘10 primary.
Of course, “no” is an acceptable answer, but I’d sure like to know more if you want to share.
Get your bobbins and come on up to a new thread.

Like why did CNN and Lou Dobbs call Chavez a communist on loudobbtonight two nights ago?
The AZ Republic had an article 1/19/07, pg. A11
I’m afraid we’re getting primed for another death squad incursion:
Just before loudobbstonight.com on 1/19/07, was an announcement about communist Chavez (their words, not mine).
On CNN TV, day before yesterday,
Dobb spoke of the leftist Latin American countries, as a headline banner traveled below, showing headlines with the word “communist” continuosly.
I wondered aloud what that was all about and was mad as !!!!………… Now I know it’s because Chavez will be building an oil pipeline to Brazil and then onto other Latin American countries in the region, and they will build their own refineries as well, which will make Venezuela and other Latin American countries pretty independent.
It’s about Chavez at a “five nation Mercosur trade bloc” summit held in Rio De Janeiro.
There he spoke of an OIL pipeline being constructed to Brazil and other nearby countries and how they’ve already broken ground on a refinery near Recife, Brazil.
“The presidents discussed working together to increase their ability to refine their countries’s oil, said Marco Aurelio Garcia, a special aide to Lula.”
Nowadays Independence =’s communism?
Oh, what treachery!
In terms of affecting what the administration does in Iraq any bill is a waste of time. Beond the veto question, Bush would simply ignore anything he doesn’t like. The only way to stop Bush is to remove both Bush and Cheney from office-and that won’t happen, because a solid 2/3rds of the GOP base shares their worldview. The only chance to stop whatever Bush is going to do was lost in November 2004. There is nothing to do now but see the GOP gets the blame for the next two years so we can start to repair the damage in 2009.
Howie Klein @ 13
Hey Now! Dodd knows the deal — the election is over and friends or foes they each stand on their own, as grown-ups and politicians. And Connecticut voters are realizing more each day that they have only one Democratic Senator in DC, just like in the last Congress. Guests are hesitant to come to FDL? Where they stood on Lieberman / Lamont in the election should not matter. Where they stand on Sen. Lieberman’s (I, CT) support for Bush’s escalation is fair game.

Howie Klein @

Howie, you want Chris Van Hollen?? He’s my Congressman! Lemme know what I can do to help get him on.
I’m from CT and agree that Dodd is bright, with integrity et al. However, I selfishly wish he wouldn’t run. We have NO ONE minding the store, so to speak, with Dodd running. Our junior senator, Lieberman, dances to his own tune and in essence cares less about the state. In effect, with Dodd running, CT will be without legitimate representation. Sad, so sad.
