I saw Iggy Pop live at a country and western bar on the Tennessee/Mississippi border in south Memphis in November 1981 just a few nights after I was discharged from the Navy and had flown out of the Persian Gulf and leaving the fast frigate, the USS Voge (FF-1047), to which I was assigned. We had been at battle stations the entire fall and my gig was up.

Iggy performed in a white wedding dress and Carlos Alomar handled guitar duties. Stress reduction? yes, to say the least, much needed in easing back into life (fast track). Sonic? absolutely.

Has anyone else noticed Iggy is doing Cadillac commercials these days? Just right for an Ann Arbor lad I suppose. Remember Bowie’s role in bringing him back. The Idiot, the album is the absolute cathartic journey. This is where you will find the original take on “China Girl.”

For me it’s k.d. lang. Just something about that woman’s voice that sooth’s my soul. She’s greta live also.

I agree, “Constant Craving” and “Anywhere but Here” are my favorites! Hope Sandoval’s voice is definately a stress reducer, soothing peace!

There are only three albums I ever listened to that, after 30 seconds, I knew I would listen to them for the rest of my life:

1) Astral Weeks by Van Morrison
2) I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight by Richard & Linda Thompson
3) Funhouse by The Stooges

For sonic stress reducers, for me it’s Iggy, The MC5 or Husker Du. Thank God for the Midwest.

Thanks for a great post!

Iggy’s performance at Bimbo’s 365 back in the early 80s remains in my memory as one of the top five rock performances I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen everybody but Jimi Hendrix and The Zep.

Awesome performer who took his art very seriously indeed.

Unlike AG ‘Abu Graib’ Gonzales who is jes another rat on the Republican slave ship trying to find a way off.

Sometimes I need to crank up The Buzzcocks’ “Singles Going Steady”, sing loud, jump around and celebrate my youth.

Sometimes I need to groove to The Reverend Al Green. Good feelings jump out of my soul and I feel love for everybody and everything in the world.

And today? Christy’s link to Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration” was just what the doctor ordered!
