I just talked to Jane and she sounds fantastic. Actually, I had snuggled up with Juan Carlos the Wonder Kitty™ about an hour ago and dozed off thinking about what to write about tonight. The phone rang and I grabbed it before I was all the way awake. I thought I was dreaming for a second. But, no, there she was, sounding more together, energetic, and on top of things than I did.
God, it's good to hear her voice. WE LOVE YOU, JANE!!
Arianna Huffington (who I can't help but kind of think of as this blog's Fairy Godmother) has filed an eyewitness report from on the ground in the ICU:
I've just gotten back from visiting Jane Hamsher in the ICU unit at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica. For those of you that don't know, Jane has been diagnosed with breast cancer — her third go-around with it — and underwent 8 hours of surgery yesterday.
The surgery went well. Now it's a matter of getting back the pathology reports and figuring out the next treatment options.
Jane was in remarkable spirits — up and walking around the ICU unit, eager to talk politics – and especially Libby. She looks so great you have to keep reminding yourself what she's just been through. And she kept stressing again and again her gratitude to everyone for their love and support.
Jane said she can actually feel our prayers and love around her. (It's probably just the morphine, but hey…) I think even she is a little amazed at how well she's doing. She's been up storming around the hospital corridor twice today, apparently roaring, "BRING ME THE HEAD OF DICK CHENEY!" or something to that effect the whole time.
Our good friend Monk has a project in mind. He wants your picture to make a collage of FDL readers. He needs at least 150 photos to get started, but I'm sure we can do better than that. Here are your instructions, as per Monk:
(I)f you could have FDL users send me the following to dartmonk at comcast dot net:
– an email with "Project JANE" as the subject
– any size .gif or .jpg image of themself (or with others in the pic) attached to the email
– 1 image only!
– include their name (either their nickname or real name) in the body of the email
I'd love to get at least 150 of them for the 'collage' – refer to it as that for now or present it however you like.
I'll do the rest.
You've got it, Monk. Kids, you have your marching orders. Now get to it.
Thanks to everyone who has written, donated, and offered assistance. We're not all the way out of the woods yet, but we're a hell of a lot closer than we were before the surgery. Everyone here at FDL thanks you and appreciates all you do. Thank you for being a friend of the blog.
Now say 'cheese' for the nice squirrel.

Sweet, I knew the blogger invasion of this trial would turn some heads. What can we expect and when? You sure it isnt going to be a hit piece?
TeddySanFran @ 22
I claim authorship of that pic, Teddy.
I am hoping that Jane could feel the love when I took my dogs out for a walk. I put on my brand new New Balance 801’s – they are black and pink with a pink breast cancer ribbon on them. My socks were gray with pink and white poodles dancing all about. Three of my dogs and I danced through the drizzle for an hour.
I thought about sending a picture of one of the dogs instead of me, since they are so much cuter, but I did find one halfway decent shot of me with a fish, so I am sending that instead.
OldCoastie @ 43
Thanks for the confirmation Oldcoastie. The only reason I remember is because the idea of an inflatable dartboard always made me laugh.
It’s dartmonk, not dark.

Well, how could I miss with such handsome subjects?
Siun – I take it you have been working overtime to spread the word to the traditional media about the trial coverage that will be provided by the FDL Plameologists. I just wanted to thank you for your efforts. This trial is likely to be a tremendous and unprecedented opportunity for FDL to break through into the consciousness of the American public. I look forward to watching you, Marcy, Jane, Christy and Pach seize the moment. Their expertise in this area is nonpareil and it is time for them to showcase their brilliance on a national stage.
Can I send a photo that is a few years old when I was younger and thinner? I mean, just how recent does it have to be?
At least I still have all my hair.
Seriously, wishing Jane all the best.
Hey TRex you’re the best! Hope to meet you in 12ft person someday. I’m so glad Jane has you, and everybody else…I mean…everyone! It is so fantastic. I’m holding my breath, keep the good vibes flowing, she’s not outta the woods yet.
Eureka Springs – open the picture, Edit/Copy, set up your message with address and all, then Edit/Paste the pic after your text (will be rec’d properly on all machines)

OldCoastie @ 61
I had a sneaking suspicion it was easy. thank you very much, it’s been a long time since I was attached…) (in a cyber way)
Hey Monk- just sent a pic, and it is one from FDL.
It has a really nice story behind it. When I was in CT for the Lamont primary, CTBob
took this pic of me and Jane at Sullivan’s, and Jane used it as the pic for a FDL post:
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..y-we-go-2/
And, Wolcott linked that post
http://www.vanityfair.com/poli….._smog.html
The relevant text from Wolcott is “Because when you peer at the faces of certain liberal bloggers and see the anger and hate contorting their features, you can understand”…that’s near the bottom of the Wolcott post.
And, what is so funny and wonderful about this story is that I didn’t even have time to
read FDL while I was in CT for the primary. AND, therefore, I would not have known that Jane put our pic up as part of a post. EXCEPT!!!…. the person I was staying with in CT is my best friend (known her since college) and one of her sons is my “godson”. (Parents would have named me his GODmother, except that they don’t believe in GOD.) Turns out he “godson” reads FDL, and SAW!!! the picture in Jane’s FDL post, and my “godson” called his mom from CA (my BF) to tell her about it pronto! He didn’t even know that I commented on FDL, and didn’t know that I was “Valley Girl”, but he recognized me immediately! What a small world!
ES – there’s always the old fashioned way of just “attach file” – that works too…
darkblack @ 51
Ya got a Lurking Mod somewhere on that hard drive?
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Put yourself first Jane, you are one of a kind. Take special care.
hmm… so many pictures of dogs (or me hiding behind ‘em)… maybe I should get someone to take a picture of me once in awhile…
TeddySanFran @ 45
Teddy!
Full house at the hospital. Lots of kids pre and post op, nearly enough supplies. Except: the city is refusing to provide enough oxygenators, which are necessary for open heart surgery. However, since this was recently revealed on tv we are hoping they will be shamed into doing the right thing for their newborns.
Some of my stuff got wrecked crossing the border. I don’t know what their point is. Lost about $1,000 worth but I’ll just take it next time.
They are flipping out about how warm it is. Mid January, and almost no snow the whole season. Temperatures in the 30’s F. It makes them uncomforable, they love their winter. Nearly everybody I speak with wants to know what I think of the weird weather. Can people really think global warming isn’t happening?
Boris is out of the hospital. He will need prosthetic feet because he lost his from the sepsis. He will be able to walk but not run.
We got a million dollars of equipment from the governor for the ICU, it’s being assembled, I hope to see it up and functioning before I leave.
great project, Monk and TRex. I’m in…or will be , later tonight.

From the list of the Periodical Press Gallery of the House of Representatives, these are the “news” organizations that have the most accredited members. The numbers are approximate because the site has a very odd way of listing members’ names. I tried to include all organizations with more than 20 credentialed members. I added Business Week because this is Lorraine Woellert’s publication.

Time Magazine 25
U. S. News & World Report 27

http://periodical.house.gov/index.shtml
These are brief descriptions drawn from their websites:
BNA reports on information and analysis products for professionals in law, tax, business, and government.
FDC Reports for pharmaceutical and healthcare executives, policymakers, and analysts reporting on developments affecting regulation and marketing of healthcare products and services.
Inside Washington Publishers behind-the-scenes coverage of the federal policy process for professionals in Washington, across the United States, and around the world, etc.
Thompson Publishing Group reports on compliance information for professionals in business and government
UCG: unknown
As prostratedragon notes from the Press Gallery site:
However if you use Time and Newsweek as benchmarks, it quickly becomes obvious that some fairly obscure publications have a very major presence in the Gallery with consequent influence over it. Probably just a coincidence how many of them deal with taxes and regulation.
Bottomline: There is something pretty odd about the makeup of the Press Gallery and if it isn’t made up of lobbyists, it sure isn’t doing much not to look like it is.

Oh man, one of the strangest weekends of my entire life took place entirely in and around the vicinity of Elkhart, IN. First of all, Amish country surrounds the town. Yeah, Brown County, IN is the artist colony for the state. You would do very well there in the summer or fall, but you should know an arsonist burned down the Brown County Inn on January 2nd. Its one of the largest hotels in the area so rooms will be at a premium until they rebuild the Inn. If you decide to visit, late summer/early fall during the color change season is best when all the tourists come to watch the leaves in the valley turn colors and drop.

“This post is dedicated to Jane at Firedoglake and offered as lite reading and best wishes for her speedy recovery.” :)*
Sent my photo of me when I was in the U.S. Navy!
GET WELL SOON, JANE!

Oh dear Monk – am too incompetent to manage the cut & paste and will try again after I get some beauty sleep.
Kudos for the idea – and sweet early valentine to our fearless founder of da Lake!

Whew!!!
I was worried there for a minute that mine would get to you too late.
Just got here, just read the terrific idea, and got all excited!!!
You don’t know how sad I’ve been that I’ve only gotten to meet one FirePupster so far (katymine) in person, and I don’t think YKos is possible for me this year (money problems & physical difficulties).
My soul’s been yearning to its farthest stretch in sending prayers and warmth and love to Jane, trying my very best to quietly unite my heart with the hearts of all other FirePups here.
This gives me a sense of really uniting with all of you in a gift to Jane.
Thank you!!!!!
[And I got worried there for a moment, as everyone’s been so quick off the mark tonight. I hate to admit that digital cameras are a new thing for us, being such an old-fashioned girl and so behind the times and all. Mr. K8 is sound asleep, dead tired poor thing, and I will need him to help me with this. We have so few pics so far, I may even need him to snap a fresh something after we get up tomorrow.]
Speaking of Mr. K8 — it would be ok to have a pic of the both of us, no? (Provided I can get my shy guy to agree.) While he rarely gets a chance to read here directly, I’m often reading aloud to him from the blog, and he follows the exploits of the Lake as closely as his work’ll allow. And we’ve been offering our prayers and candle flames for Jane together.
Ooooo boy, I’m so excited!
Thank you, Monk! Thank you, everybody! A chance to participate! Oooo boy!
Hugh at 76 — Thanks for the follow-up. It shows about what I suspected, that dividing lines in the past have been, um, fuzzy.
Looking further in the rules of the Periodical Press Gallery itself, I see that there is at least one avenue of recourse that Sirota might want to pursue, a hearing before the Executive Committee of the Periodicals Press Gallery. Also, there seem to be two Gallery associations, and Sirota might be eligible for the other.
The really interesting thing, though, is that these Press Galleries are created by standing rules in the House and Senate. For instance, the rule as it read for the House in Congress 109 is here.
It appears that, though the galleries are administered by committees of the press, the regulations under which they operate are set “from time to time” by the Speaker of the House. For instance at present, or as of the last session actually, the rules maintain the guaranteed equality of certain perks to AP and UPI, which have been observed since the heyday of the Natchez Trace as a commercial route. Other special regulations read thus:
Ahem. Perhaps Ms. Pelosi has already taken up this subject, but with the drive to get the 100 hours’ agenda through (successful! yay!), perhaps not. Maybe it’s time to do that early in this session. After all, we’ve had bloggers in Federal court for a whole week now, and no sign of the building disappearing into a sinkhole yet.
G*d, am I ugly! How can I find a picture of myself by 0900 my time that won’t break your computer?
Well, here goes – smoke starts spewing from ET’s iBook……….
Maybe I’ll try again later.
Edward –
Monk said 10 a.m. PST on Sunday as the cut-off.
I was worried too until I read that, as we can only do it tomorrow around noonish.
You can get something by Sunday, can’t you? [I hope — would love to see you!]
BTW, I ain’t no Miss America, either. Y’all will just have to overlook that and look for the spirit within, OK?
Mrs. K8 @ 189
I thought one had to be pregnant to be Miss America these days. I sent what I could find, along with another prayer and a couple of wood knocks to Jane.
Ed –
Oh, well then maybe there’s a resemblance. Not that I’m preggers, mind you.
Just, once upon a time I was slimmer….
BTW — haven’t had a chance before to say I hope you heal up nicely. That scary road experience and muscle-tensing description made me flinch for you. Do you have enough support — folks who can do physical stuff requiring arms/shoulders for you?
Mrs. K8 @ 186
Speaking of Mr. K8 — it would be ok to have a pic of the both of us, no? (Provided I can get my shy guy to agree.)
You know… the thought of the two of you taking the effort to primp and pose and take a picture for this project all the while with Jane in mind… well, it makes me smile.
That’s what makes this community so great.
Mrs.(and Mr.) K8, you take your time and have fun with it.
-Monk
Mrs K8,
I’ve gotten a lot of support from family, work and friends. Ms. ET and ET, jr. are down in Soldotna for a Nordic Ski race series, so my bodyguard is staying over. He’s great. He works at sea on a tug, so has had lots of surgeries like mine over the years
off to bed. later…
Thank you, Mr. Monk!
It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to “see” you in a little chat here. I hope things have been going well for you in this new year. You certainly sound as though the creative juices are flowing abundantly.
Your project sounds just perfect, something that’ll mean a lot to Jane, and bring her much healing cheer.
Now that I have your kind answer, ’tis off to get some needed beauty sleep…so I’ll be ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMonk! ;-)
Sweet dreams to you and to all here.
If I can find someone to take a picture of me by the deadline, I’ll be happy to send it along, but there’s something I must relate.
A few years ago, one side of my family had its first reunion ever. It was a wonderful weekend, dozens of us with parents, spouses and children, renewing old acquaintances and making new, marvelling at our mutual resemblance out to the third remove, all the things that go into such occasions.
The whole weekend, I did not see one camera. The (*&*%&*%#$%& family of the Mississippi Valley and Pacific Coast are utterly lacking in the snapshot gene, but for one member I can think of who is now departed, and would certainly have been the only snapshooter there. When I realized it later, I couldn’t believe how improbable a thing that is. Perhaps the mind’s eye is vivid, but I’m reluctant to rely on such a boast. Anyway, we really did enjoy each other in real time.
“BRING ME THE HEAD OF DICK CHENEY!” LOL
Get well quick and make it happen!
So glad to hear how well you are doing!
Keep it up!
God bless.
Pic sent – not responsible for collateral damage to the toobz.
Great idea. Best wishes to Jane. Hi Trex, how about one with you in your Aussie t-shirt?
Am so glad to hear Jane is sounding like her good ‘ole self again. Having something to live for (dethroning Bush/Cheney) gives incentive. Still have good thoughts and wishes going her way for the path results.
Could I send a picture when I was 25? probably not.

Well, at least they did not mention FOX :-)
OTOH, the current UPI is not the same as the old one – didn’t the Moonies buy it to go along with the Wash Times? Pelosi really needs to do something about this. Seriously.
Equal time to bloggers! Our new rallying cry :-)
All my love to Jane, btw.
neokneme @ 152
At that, I’m pretty sure they don’t think. They believe.
I’m not normoal
I can’t find the email address in this thread to send it too

ah, got it

Yeah. That’s pretty much where I am too! I may have Mr. MinS take a picture of me from the back looking at something… Maybe that would work… Camera might break, though, and it’s his brand new toy…
The NYT is still around, and today we have guest columnist Stacy Schiff on how you gotta be nuts to get a job in this Administration, and MoDo tells us that W. has read 2 Flashman books. That is EXTREMELY bad news… He probably thinks they’re histories.

I got up early enough to make both regular and decaf coffee and a BIG pot of tea. There are bagels and cream cheese on the counter. You’ll have to supply your own lox… I hate that stuff!
The link must be closed. I cannot get in.

“And visions of Cheney-heads dancing in her head.”
Uh, erhmm, something like that!
Marion in Savannah @ 204
Mmmm, bagels, my favorite. I think I must have one. Thank you.
Hi, Mandrake -
See you noon – for real! Yippeeeee!
Sent my mug along.
Isn’t it creepy they way the eyes of the “head of dick cheney” follow you around the room, no matter where you put it?
Monk, I you are doing this for Jane, and well deserved, but I’d love to see a copy of the final product if possible.
5 degrees here in iowa. time to put the coffee on (decaf for us…sigh) and start the blueberry scones.
Monk,
What a terrific idea to put a face or sorts to all of us out here pulling for our lady Jane.
If you get more than you need why discard them? Perhaps turn them into an online slide show? You don’t need the names or the nicks.. just the faces etc of we the firepups…
I am sure Jane with get a real boost from seeing all that visual jazz and love… a thousand faces launching a new nation!
Go for it… Full speed ahead with the mission!

I can’t wait to see all you guys in Monks collage.
Sweet.
Hi Jane. Hope you’re feeling great today.

Marion in Savannah,
Muchas gracias for giving us free columnists!
Good morning all,
It’s so good to hear Jan is up and back on the trail. I agree that she should get what she wants….on a platter.
I’ll have to find a pic to send in for the “Jane’s Groupies” family foto.
thanks for the links
morning all…. is there coffee?
yes!
hot and fresh and courtesy of Marion
I think its over there by the tea and beagles.
:-)
oh, I could use a beagle with cream cheese!
this has been a rough week, hasn’t it?
glad it’s Saturday.
Pull up a Chair…
In lieu of a picture of retirin’ and my better half — not readily available at this time — I’ve sent a picture of our “grandchildren.” They’re labs. They’re libs. Use if you deem appropriate.
OldCoastie @ 220
I think that’s a much better choice than when they pick the lox to get out.

keep on tearing it down!
I am just an old hilbilly (did my combat year in korea) who has become addicted to blogs and i always read Jane’s first(at my age eat dessert first). Thru her writting I have taken a liking to Jane and i read that FDKjane needed some money. I have a paypal account and have been trying to send some but i cant make it work. If someone would email explicit instructions (orisk AT bellsouth DOT net) it would help.
Jane, fighting the guys in black hats is more fun and easier when i have you to help me. Get well.

Charles Moulton @ 227
Charles M or anyone, the easy way is to click on the ‘PayPal donate’ link, which is at the top of the right-hand side bar under the ‘Advertise Liberally” banner. Or, if you’re not a PayPal member, you can choose the direct credit card link (VISA, and M/C and I think AMEX). More coffee? And there’s biscuits just out of the pan.
What a great idea to do a photo collage! I just sent mine. I figured since I read FDL all day every day – even though I almost never comment – I’d send one along so Jane knows there’s lots & lots of us she doesn’t even hear from pulling for her.
TRex, thanks for the report.
Have sent a picture of “Prof underwater” to Monk.
I just got an email from Hillary’s folks. She’s forming an exploratory committee as we speak. Man, oh man. A three ring circus without a ringmaster. This is so gonna be fun.
Peace.
Never give up.
My pic is on the way – so good to be able to show our support for and solidarity with Jane. Better than the head of Darth Cheney anyway, tt would wilt all the flowers. I’ve posted a thread, so far undisovered, at Democratic Underground on this great project:
http://www.democraticundergrou.....64x3162805The warmest of good wishes go to Jane and all those supporting her.
TRex!
I’ll look for a decent photo. Please add my voice to all the others: Brava, Jane.
