From the New York Times today:
There is always, it seems, a fresh new face breezing into a presidential race, offering himself as the person to change the tone, eliminate the vitriol and transform the old ways of politics.
Senator Barack Obama of Illinois is auditioning for that role in the 2008 campaign. He said so himself, leaping into the Democratic contest this week on a promise to “advance the cause of change and progress that we so desperately need.”
. . . During his two years in the Senate, Mr. Obama has sought to build a reputation for occasionally stepping across party boundaries. And in his announcement on Tuesday, he did not so much as utter the word “Democrat,” perhaps signaling a desire to expand his appeal.
Ummmm... which party's nomination for the White House is he hoping to win? I think someone's been spending too much time with Joe Lieberman and Bob Kerrey (who is quoted extensively in the NYT article), learning how to campaign for the not-so-coveted narcissist-American vote.
But it's refreshing to learn that this country has so few problems that the most important political issue is "changing the tone." Just imagine, if we were in a war or something, that might be the key issue.

New Lieberman?
Yeah, zed. Get over it. ;)
Tony Blair is to host talks with Condoleezza Rice in Downing Street tonight - just a day after Peter Hain described the US Republican administration as a failure at home and abroad.
Obama let “The Party of One” get to him.
He hasn’t been the same since. Lieberman somehow got him to thinking about that reaching across the aisle bullshit.
I sure as fuck don’t trust Lieberman, so I guess you can easily extrapolate from there…….
I stopped by to check on Jane and stumbled onto a new post. I’m glad that the NYT is able to offer us such insight. We have nothing else to ponder nowadays.
So he’s planning to win over Americans by lying to them about why our country is so screwed up (and more importantly, who’s responsible)? Geez, how groundbreaking.
According to Faux news, isn’t this Obama guy related to two of the guys Maliki just hanged?
I don’t want Obama and I don’t want that ‘Demo’ Senator from NY. There are so many better Democrats who are far more talented and suited to be our next president.
Obama is trying to play the non-partisan game. F’k that. I didn’t vote for non-partisanship last November. That’s why I voted the str8 Democratic ticket.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 9
Remember how Howard Dean used to say that he belonged to “the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party”?
Obama apparently doesn’t.
The NYT is simply trying to prejudice voters against the man before they’ve even had a chance to hear him. This is a part of the RNC strategy, to get the public to mentally discard some of the most viable DNC candidates before they are even out of the blocks.
Let’s not take the bait. Let’s sit back, listen and truly evaluate each potential candidate. It’s much too important to let the media sway us at this early date.
Swopa– thanks for the post.
I’m not exactly overjoyed by any of the dems, yet.
I have a lot of admiration for Kucinich, though.
I hope everyone hasn’t left the room…
Oops - they have! This is too important - please forgive me for posting my EPU’d comment about breast cancer - but it’s not so long. No need to reply but please read - thanks!
My heart is with Jane. (((((Jane))))) I hope that means hugs! ;-)
I would just like to add this: yes, get a mammogram, your best chance is to find a place with newer machines and ask for a digital mammogram - they are better for younger(denser) breasts, they also provide fewer false positives.
Know too that mammogram is only one piece of the diagnostic tools and are not anywhere close to failsafe. DO yearly clinical exams and monthly personal exams - my Dad (a doctor) said most of the women he treated found their lumps. What smiley said.
Get any lump checked out!
My sister is going through chemo with stage II cancer right now and will be getting surgery.
She had a lump a year ago and the mammogram came back “clean”. But there is something inexplicable about what happened with her - I’m baffled that her doctor didn’t do a follow up or order a biopsy. But she may have refused due to her fundamentalist religion too…
Mammograms cannot see all cancer. They are best for identifying it - but are by no means a “clean bill of health” if they don’t see it. Not to panic - just know you need to understand it and do for yourself the additional steps you can.
Okay - back to scheduled topic - sorry!
Transforming the old ways of politics? Maybe it’s the old ways we need to return to, like speaking up forthrightly on the issues, and standing up for the constitution, the rule of law, and other such quaint pre-9/11 institutions.
Peterr @ 14
Amen
NPR’s Marketplace and Fed Chair Bernanke concur that bipartisanship (which won’t be forthcoming because of the mean ol’ democrats) is the cure-all for the looming economic disaster that is social security and the demand created by aging baby boomers. Then afterwards, the real news was that democrats created a bill to take away oil company tax breaks/subsidies to use for energy alternatives. Seems like an awfully mean thing to do to the benevolent oil companies.
I know almost nothing about Obama - and if any firepups know I would be interested if he and Raul Emanuel are buds.
I renounce charisma. I will not be on the lookout for the guy on the white horse with the JFK-MLK-RFK glamour. I’m not looking for the winner, the patriarch, the warrior-king, the prophet, or the savior. I want authentic, even rough-hewn. A leader who is fabulously experienced in foreign policy, constitutional law, and public administration. A governor? A progressive who is a clear and fearless communicator. A man or woman with a vision for the future and an education in world history. Who might that be?
Obama is my senator and I wish he wasn’t. There’s been zero critical coverage of him here and he’s getting the Chicago machine in his camp. Someone tell me why Madigan head of the bankrupt (as in credibility) Illinois Democratic party has never been worried about Illinois getting locked out of the primaries before Slick-and-Spineless made presidential noises?
Even the grassroots here have been fooled by this guy because he never talks about anything important until after it’s all over. Durbin, my otherwise good senator, is pushing this idiot for President.
Obama is very bad news.
To Christy and all who’re looking out for Jane, I hope all is going well with Jane.
mrobinsong @ 18
How bout another fake cowboy?
Peterr @ 14
I agree. Emphasis on the issues–and the malfeasance of the opposition party–forces people to evaluate their own wishes for governance and their own values. And, let’s face it–if one tries to bring crazies over to your side by diluting one’s message on the issues, one has made insanity part of the platform….
Let’s try “patriotism” for a new tone–doing what’s best for the country and not just for the officeholder. Out with bipartisanship, partisanship, and bullshi#. I really am getting very angry that the 2008 presidential race is starting this early when so much needs to be done now instead of this unholy wasting of time and of ink on presidential wannabes. We haven’t had a president for 6 years, what’s the rush now?
Peterr @ 14
I’d vote for that, Peterr. I think the NYT was just filling space with Obama’s name, because there is so much [media-generated] interest in him.
draft Gore. accept no substitutes.
I have a question. There was some opinion a while ago that Obama had not directly choosen Lieberman, but had been assigned. That would make a big difference to me, although I believe Obama is trying to follow in Joe’s (supposed) bipartisian footsteps. hahahahahahah
Did Obama choose Joe or was it chosen for him.
mrobinsong @ 18
You mean like the Governor from Montana, Brian Schweitzer ?
punaise @ 24
HEAR HEAR! Accept No Substitutes, indeed!
GrandmaJ @ 25
I would think that any new senator who had fundamental objections could have gone his own way, or asked for the assistance of someone else.
Acquiescence would be a form of approval.
Schweitzer/Webb 2008
Very aptly put.
Whats the rush? I, for one, can wait for the mudslinging, negative campains to start.
I can think of a boatload of more important things for these people to be doing besides the continuous high school popularity contest.
Oooh, I do like Brian Schweitzer and Spitzer in New York. But I have certainly liked Edwards of late. I admit that while Edwards was saying the right things in 2004, he never “got me off the couch to rejoin politics” like Dean did.
But Kos said in one of his posts today that we deanpeople were the most obnoxious in 2004. Oh well.
Obama and Hillary are working the right to pick up voters there, then they’ll swing to the middle (that’s out in rightville, too) then they’ll pick up the lefty’s at the last stop.
mrobinsong @ 18
Calling Will Rogers, white courtesy telephone please.
Any candidate who says we should be more bipartisan after the partisan beating Democrats have taken under Bush loses me immediately.
I’m waiting for a candidate who will put the good of the people of this country over his/her party’s good.
Advising Democrats to be more bipartisan makes as much sense to me as urging us to pat the next rabid dog we run into.
All this 2008 Presidential Race talk reminds me of stores bringing out the Christmas stuff before Halloween. So much can and does happen in two years. Who would have thunk the Rethugs would be where they are today two years ago? And who would have thunk that McCain would be tanking so nicely. I can’t abide the scripting that HRC and Obama are following. John Edwards seems a lot more real, but I sure do like those guys from Montana, too. Oh yeah and Al Gore, too.
Hackworth @ 16, why bother with the Fed Chair when all he can come up with is the scare that Social Security and Medicare programs are breaking the bank? Jeez. Where has he been and where should we send him? What Republican wouldn’t agree with his foolishness and why bother asking for it? The Iraq war is keeping us in the black? You think?
During his two years in the Senate, Mr. Obama has sought to build a reputation for occasionally stepping across party boundaries. And in his announcement on Tuesday, he did not so much as utter the word “Democrat,”
Oh great! *psycho music* It’s now Barack JO-bama?
Kos may have found the Dean people obnoxious in ‘04, but he fails to point out we were also correct about Dean. Dean had the right ideas about what our country needed, and he still does.
And Marcos, the feeling is mutual. I find you obnoxious too.
Retired Generals criticize Bush Iraq plan.
NYT story
O-lame-A
No time for middle men. Peace and liberty are not freaking negotiable nor should they continue to be ignored into oblivion.
I would rather vote for Hillary.
Darnit! The heck with Edwards, Hilary and Jo-Bama, I want a darkhorse an awful lot like Howard Dean to come on the scene and start speaking with the power of truth.
I notice Dems with Clinton issues–Bob Kerrey, Joe Lieberman–seem to be cozying up to Obama. That makes me a tad suspicious.
GrandmaJ @ 31
wow. Not bad, GrandmaJ - i remeber Jane was on the honorable mention list for “most annoying liberal.”
mui @ 41
Richardson. Or Schweitzer.
“Calling Will Rogers, white courtesy telephone please.”
I like that!
cleter @ 44
Or Clark
What do you all think of Gov Richardson from NM? He has a pretty good track record of international diplomacy and is progressive so far as I can tell. Not high on the charisma charts, but I think we need substance more than form these days.
Senator Mary Landrieu, another so-called Dem is doing the bi-partisan game s’t on “Hardball”.
mrobinsong @
18
I think you are describing Wesley Clark. Brilliant, Rhodes Scholor, advanced degrees in economics and political science, the most widely respected American in Europe and much of the world, Incredible foreign policy credentials as past NATO Supreme Allied Commander, competent leader with solid executive experience with the largest single organization in America (the Army), a solid progressive and man of integrity with not one whiff of scandal ever attached to him. And, yeah, he’s been against the war from the beginning as well as advocating equal rights for gays and single payer health care.
You know I don’t know much about Richardson or Schweitzer. But Clark I like if Gore says he will not run *really* not run.
Senator Mary Landrieu is a prick.
petedownunder @ 47
I guess charismatic is an hard to define quality though. I find Howard Dean charismatic though others may not.
petedownunder @ 47
Whenever the pundits speak about him, they wonder aloud whether “he lacks discipline” to run for or be President. I’m not sure what that’s code for inside the Beltway, but I worry that there’s something “undisciplined” that we mortals don’t know.
Morris @ 49, and he’s ever so handsome in black.
Gore, Edwards, Clark, Kucinich, Feingold, Pelosi, Murtha and others! Am I leaving anyone out here?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 48
Yeah, I don’t like seeing her cozy up to Olympia Snowe, another endangered bipartisan lady Senator. Our Democratic leaders need to be more partisan, not more bipartisan.
Mary McCurnin @ 51
Well… that certainly cuts to the quick. ;)
Morris Sheppard @ 49
all those things are true, but Clark is short.
I like Clark, too. I also like Edwards.
And could we please structure the primaries so that it’s not all settled ny March 1st? Stretch it out. Think of it like a reality show. Let the excitement build. Let everybody participate.
Hillary interview on the News Hour, fyi.
TeddySanFran @ 56
Right you are!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 55
How can we foist someone like Kucinich higher? I mean it. I remember reading an interview where he said by “the Goddess” or something like that. It would be very f-ing cool to have a politically correct pres.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 57
lololol!
hackworth @ 20
Take experience seriously. Do you want people to vote for charm every time? I could list ten Dems right now who have these qualities, who aren’t now in the running.
Al Gore
Gov. Christine Gregoire
Gov. Bill Richardson
Sen. Barbara Boxer
Sen. Patty Murray
Gov. Janet Napolitano
Gov. Eliot Spitzer
Gov. Brian Schweitzer
Rep. Jay Inslee
Rep. Jesse Jackson
TSF @ 58, you’re saying size matters?
TeddySanFran @ 58
Does our man need those platform shoes, perhaps?
Sally @ 54
My wife would agree with you, She thinks he’s rather handsome.
Teddy, I suspect you are teasing. We’d all be better off if we learned to measure a man by the depth of his character, and not the inches of his stature.
Senator Mary Landrieu is a product of the Lieberman playbook.
angie @ 63
Do we have someone who can run in the primary against her, so we can retain her endangered seat, but not for her. (heh, heh)
Hillary is short.
mui @
52
Here’s your charisma right here!
Morris @ 67, as the election nears and frustration mounts over the less-than-satisfactory candidates, I may just settle for someone who is nice to look at, even if he is short. Of course, my preference is for a male but it’s unlikely a female will be in the race what with gender bias and all.
Gotta go. Brother-in-law is having a premiere of his new movie tonight (it’s very funny and stars Chevy Chase and Penelope Ann Miller). Wife will kill me if I’m late.
I just hope Hillary and Obama destroy each other early and Clark gets nominated. He will win 40 states,
Seriously, what about the others like Richardson and Kucinich? The Lamont campaign almost made me think anything is possible.
Landrieu’s Senate seat is endangered, whether we run her or another Dem. The Katrina diaspora has effectively turned Louisiana into another Southern GOP state.
LindaR @ 72
That’s hot. but doesn’t roots refer to something else down under? *prudish me blushing*
Senator Mary Landrieu got reamed by Anderson Cooper right after Katrina. She was singing GW’s praises and it sent the poor reporta over the edge.
Mitch Landrieu, Mary’s brother, is cooler by far. My sister was standing on a windy corner in the business district of New Orleans years back and Mitch walked by. He said it is a blustery, blustery day just like in Winnie the Pooh. At that moment she thought she was in love.
mui @ 75
mui - Most of the time I ask about Kucinich…*crickets*
Very odd to me as well.
I like what he has to say and sure would like to hear it said more often in the main stream.
TeddySanFran @ 76
seriously?
mui — I collected that pic as you can see in Feb of 2005. I just love it, and from time to time I can’t resist bringing it up again.

Citizen xyz and the Firepup Patriots:
“New Lieberman?” About 18 months ago on this very site I advanced the idea that Obama might be the “Black Joe Lieberman”. I think that the more we shine the light on this chiffon elephant, the less there will be to see…kinda like “there ain’t any there there”.
I hope the progressive blogosphere and the muckrakers and investigators therein will keep the heat on the junior senator from Illinois. We need to get a good recent history including: his relationship to the Chicago Law School, who his main “money man” is, and what his debt load is with regard to the Chicago Democratic machine. We also need to get underneath his history with the black activist community in South Chicago…I think Bobby Rush may have some things ta say about citizen Barak.
IMO, Mr.Obama is a wholly owned subsidiary of the corporate oligarchy and the more we get ta see of ‘im the better Al Gore is gunna look in ‘08.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE BASTARDS ARE TRYIN’ TA SELL OFF THE NEIGHBORHOOD!!!
Warning! I’m unloading my off topics for the day:
From today’s White House Briefing with Tony Snow or as Monty Python would call it the Department of Stupid Arguments:
This is another example of Snow’s asserting that those who express strong disagreement with Bush, his Administration, and his policies aren’t. Note how when pressed, he folds.
Then there is the runaround with sourcing. I expressed earlier today that 400 is one of those phantom numbers that appears in the media and then is quoted and requoted and until it is accepted as fact. The following shows how this works.
Snow doesn’t go into what evidence he has for the number because he doesn’t have any. If he did, you better believe we would all be hearing about it. A little later, his “evidence” turns out to be the New York Times (who were probably quoting the Maliki government, but on what basis?). The bottomline here is that there is no outside verifiable source for this number. Could be true, but probably isn’t, but there’s no way of knowing one way or another. In other words, it’s made up.
The Biden, Hagel, Levin Resolution, in fact, does lay out a plan. The Administration position plays out like this. OTOH we want to see a detailed plan. On the other, any plan no matter how vague constitutes “micromanagement”. This is called intellectual dishonesty by some of us.
This tells you (in case you had any doubts) that the Bush Administration is still in denial about Iraq. Iraq isn’t about the war on terror. It’s about an invasion, an occupation, and a resultant civil war. Bush’s Iraq policies have all failed and will continue to fail because he’s off fighting the one war in Iraq that never existed.
I wish the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy folks would give Dennis K. a makeover. I know it’s not fair, but his physical appearance keeps people from taking his message seriously.
mui @ 77
It does. Here one barracks for a sports team, and roots with your S.O. in the privacy of one’s home.
I’m interested in voting for the Democratic candidate who will beat the Republican candidate.
cw @ 11
Yup. You got it exactly right.
SusanD @ 85
Problem is so does his singing.
Did I read somewhere (here?) that Landrieu backed Lieberman in the general and has been dissed because he’s not going to investigate the Katrina DHS mess? Now she says she’s trying to decide which way to lean on the anti-escalation bills … anyone else wonder if she’s waiting to see if Lieberman will try to woo her to the dark side with investigations?
Oh, and thanks for the renunciation of charisma. Too funny.
Sally @ 36
My point exactly. NPR has become a media arm of the right wing propagandists. They typically spew forth such right wing horse dookey. Bush has bankrupted this country, but the economy is great. They keep on pounding social security - and they have been disproven on all counts - and the media helps them do it.
The News media are salivating to move the discussion to 08- and off the disaster of the Clusterfuck presidency- hope the people don’t fall for it- It’s TWO YEARS away!
I want to see the destruction of GW Clusterfuck on the teevee 24/7. How could there be a more important or interesting political story- first total meltdown of a president while in power.
SusanD @ 85
Jeez I had the same thought too.
Hey Flamethrower, gimme a shout at markann at gmail dot com if you have a moment.
NorskeFlamethrower @ 83
new thread…
waiting, waiting, waiting.
SusanD @

I don’t know, he has a very ‘Bill Nyeesque’ appeal that you will never conflate with shallow popularity. No one will ever call Denny a Breck guy, like John Edwards. He can’t help but be taken seriously. I think he has a bit of a Harry S Truman quality. But, I’m not sure he’s mean enough.
Are there any candidates who wouldn’t be afraid to be associated with Muslims? Any that don’t advocate military strikes in Iran?
I am not sure who is more loathesome now. It appears that Albo Gonzales has knocked Odious Joe Lieberman off of my top spot.
Joe is horrible….
Albo is horrible, horrible and he’s destroying the constitution at a horrible clip.
-GSD
rwcole @ 92
Yes indeedy. A very good point.
Didja know: Dubya’s favorite Chinese restaurant? - Outback Steak House.
Landrieu is probably dead- victim of a half a million african americans leaving the state of Louisians– she will probably be replaced by a gooper…fighting for her life- but it’s an uphill battle.
Just saying - Obama didn’t vote for the bankrupsy bill, & he is on the right side on the Iraq war mess.
On Obama and Lieberman, I have a very smart colleague who took a high stress high prestige job and chose as his mentor there the most hard edged, disliked (and successful) person in the
petedownunder @ 86
*more blushing
rwcole @ 92
True, but the last thing we want is for McCain to look “attractive” in the wake of the giant vaccuum/black hole that Clusterfuck will leave, because one of our own –besides the usual opportunists Jo-Bama/Hilary– isn’t playing a leadership role
punaise @
24
I’m with you on that.
Blanco is done too.
Now it’ll be a wonder to see if she gets knocked out in a primary. Then we get to see Bobby Jindal face the redneck polling problem.
-GSD
rumi @ 97
Kucinich for sure. But we ladies think he might need a makeover before hand.
McCain is cratering here in NH. NH is where McCain made his bones as the big kahuna against Bush.
Seems enough NH folks can smell McCains dessicated warmongering cadaver from Arizona and they don’t like it anymore.
-GSD
Bush just plain fucked up Iraq—
Anyone who read O’Neil’s book after his brief stint with the administration- should have known that we were headed for BIG TROUBLE.
Anyone who spends his first two hour meeting with his treasury secretary asking ZERO questions- and making ZERO comments- or establishing ZERO priorities- has NO BUSINESS in the White House.
He doesn’t know how to lead- OR to manage.
Sorry, hit “send” too soon - so took a hard ass mentor so he could learn as much as possible in the shortest amount of time feasible. And it worked. Nearly all the Dems -DCC and others did miserably on Lamont (very painful for all of us), but Obama was no worse than the others - i.e. Pelosi, Reid, Kennedy, etc. Obama isn’t everything I would like to have in a candidate, but he is smart, thoughtful, very articulate, remarkably personable and has a top notch staff (that he listens to).
I also like Edwards and Clark as candidates; Richardson is not bad either, and there are a couple more too. But let’s not trash (and empty the can) before we know what we have out there.

Richmond @ 108
Good vote on the bankruptcy bill. I forgot, how’d Obama vote on the Alito cloture fiasco? Against cloture was the progressive tack and a no vote for Scalito.
