A White House Briefing for the Libby Trial: brilliant. Do keep doing it. That way we can be almost as informed as you are, Marcy, but in a lot less time. (Old formula for success in any kind of journalism: save readers time.)

For each of the reported pieces you sample there’s the story and what it says happened, along with analysis of what it all means. Here we can compare what the journalist says to what’s known, what true.

But then along with the story there’s the narrative underneath, also called the story line, which has to do with the various interpretations these events did, or still could inspire as they take their place in the larger (but slower) tale of the Plame case. There is “news” about that in the coverage you review. A blogger like yourself is by far our best source of information there.

Lazy formulation, but we like it: There’s the facts and the spin. Instead: There’s the story (we can check its facts) and the narrative line, also called the thread. You have to get both right! I’m looking forward to watching you do it.

Marcy, I want to add my vote, I love this post - it’s a must read. I will look for future posts in the series.

BTW Leonnig also wrote some good pieces on the warrantless wiretapping and FISA issues. We’ll have to watch for her reporting there.

Elliot Ness -
I agree with you that Fitz has Rover and is sittting on him like fresh gunpowder. Why do you think Abu killed the filing?
Elliot Ness @
44

EW

I believe that Scooter’s lawyers will have made a serious error in judgement if they call Rove as a witness, I believe Fitz has Rover’s nuts in a vice, i.e. proffer, and has to be smiling like a cheshire cat eating shit, hence Fitz’s leaving Rover off his witness list.

I believe Fitz was holding Rover in reserve for the ultimate fait accompli, the subsequent indictment of Cheney should his prosecution of Scooter be successful.

I still believe Rover was indicted and Abu Gonzales killed the filing. I also believe Fitz will have the final say.

Okay, okay, I get the idea, and I agree, Valerie Wilson is stunning. But you think maybe you could wipe the saliva off your chin long enough to also mention her role in protecting this country from nuclear proliferation?

I laughed a great loud bellylaugh! Thank you for this. I am SO glad I have your book on the way.

Perris, yes that was genius on Fitz part to be patient and let scooters guy call ole Dick as a witness. He’s going to get some serious mileage out of that move.

* guffaw! *

Oh my. I can’t breathe for laughing!!!

Somebody get Shane a moist towelette, STAT!

Marcy, you’d better pick up an economy-sized bale of baby wipes whenever you hit DC. And hand sanitizer — good gravy, I can’t imagine touching the same door knob following Shane.

Great job, can’t wait for the next marking period!

(p.s. you made pretty good time in that little car of yours, think you beat me home…unless you were dictating this to DB while he typed it into your ‘Berry!)

It simply defies credulity that these people did not bother to ascertain the status of their own CIA agent. That, I think is what is at the heart of the investigation. How could the civilian executive officers of the CIA not know the status of their own agent? Was it such a trivial, peripheral matter to them that they so blithely exposed her identity without bothering to ascertain her status? How could the potential exposure of a CIA asset be a peripheral or trivial matter? The prosecutor might not be able to prove that they did know, but in the course of the investigation the multiple lies do establish consciousness of guilt and cast grave suspicions that they are lying about their ignorance.
