PA-18 in 2008

I think that Tim Murphy (R-Upper St. Clair) is vulnerable in PA-18 in the next election cycle. I am pleased that FireDogLake and Blue America is starting to look into this district as an area to seed a potential challenger

Hi there,
I did some work for Tom Kovach (D-Peter’s Township) in the PA-18 Democratic Primary in 2006 against Chad Kluko, and here is what I think that we need to do win in PA-18.

1) Recruit the candidate from Allegheny County — it makes up about 55% of the vote and tends to be slightly more anti-Murphy than Beaver, Washington and Westmoreland Counties. Murphy’s hometown of Upper St. Clair is old stream GOP and is slowly trending Democratic. [ Possible recruits are Air Force reservist Bill Sargant of Mt. Lebanon and Stan Savran[a sports radio talker]

2) Make Murphy an object of scorn and ridicule — a) He has a Ph.D in Psych, but claims expertise way past what he is qualified for — make him seem like a know it all.
b) His staff and campaign workers tend to hate him (see 2008 Race Tracker Wiki for links)
c) His close ties to Hart and Santorum
3) Make ethics a big part of the case against him
4) Organize Westmoreland County as that is a region that is trending GOP, but has enough residual Dem strength that we can win big there if we try hard.

5) Contact Fred Terling, the DNC SW PA organizer as he knows the district inside and out.

Mauimom @ 126

NOW we know what Rahm did with “our” contributions: [from an article in today’s WaPo on local big $$$ eateries]

“Located on Constitution Avenue near the Capitol, Charlie Palmer Steak is known for its more progressive interpretations of macho steakhouse fare. For example, it serves pheasant. During the 2006 election cycle, the organization Nancy Pelosi for Congress spent more than $10,000 there. That’s pocket change compared with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee: On March 17, the organization rang up a tab of $50,028.”

So, what’s your point? The Democrats spent money at a progressive restaurant, is that a crime or corruption? Maybe thaey had a big dinner/fundraiser/meeting there.

I think we need to get Duncan Hunter indicted - what will become of this mess now that Ms. Lum is getting the boot?

(background - my right-wing fundie sister and her ex-fighter pilot hubby live in Descanso - Hunter’s district.)

I despise Hunter, especially since he’s been so vocal about supporting the escalation in Iraq; but have to say, if my sister’s family is representative of the folks in CA-52, then he is representing them very well…

This, however, does not make my distain for him dim one iota.

Hunter also appears to be the sentimental favorite among the far right bloggers. They all hate McCain and Giuliani and they’re angry at Brownback– the actual furthest to the right– because he’s opposing escalation. But they acknowledge that no one has ever heard of Hunter. Of course if he gets indicted as a co-conspirator of Cunningham’s (which he was) then everyone will have heard of him. It’s funny; he was taking the same amounts of money from the same crooked defense contractors as Cunningham and he’s still free as a bird– and running for the GOP nomination!

Thanks for all your fine work Howie. I learn so much from you and especially appreciate your grasp of our California cast of politicos. Makes me appreciate our district’s Rep. Sam Farr even more than I thought possible. I consider it no small miracle how much more courageous, decisive and effective Sam has proven by shunning special interests, and pressures by party power operatives inside the Raul Emanuel camp, unlike Farr’s predecessor, Leon Panetta.

John Barrow is a Lieberman Democrat. Watch his slimy ass.

Barrow no longer represents a sure Dem district. The GA legislature redrew it to favor his opponent in Nov., Burns, but he squeaked out a victory.

The 12th district is now the 10th district, I believe.

Howie - one thing I do notice around here, if there is any Democrat running at all on the ballot against Miller, he or she will get 35% of the vote - whether we know that person or not - just as a protest… the 42nd (at least on this side of the mountain) is changing for the blue… not sure what’s going on up in Placentia and up that’a way…

Steve Young outta move up here and run…
