This is the only video clip I could get from the new Los Lobos album,
The Town and the City, which has become a real favorite of mine for the car of late. It's a top rated album of the year by a compendium of the critics at
Metacritic, and rightly so: it's an outstanding piece of intelligent roots rock and roll art.
Their promoter had read some of my previous writing about music from and about the Latino community in the United States, and offered to send me the CD. I'm a Los Lobos fan, but had not been aware of the new album. This is some of that hefty swag I've gotten from this blogging gig. Now if only I could bill for my time.
Anyway, I accepted the CD and duly disclose that to you here and now. Then I listened to the album and
really liked it: I find it grows on me with each listen. Though I write about Latino voices and the
right wing campaign against brown people, and even the
incarceration of immigrants into American
concentration camps, this is not primarily a political album. (For a new
installment in the wingnut war on immigrants, see Latina Lista's
latest. Ask yourself, how many countries accept U. S. dollars?)
It has content, from the perspective of the characters given life in some of the lyrics, who speak of the immigrant experience, and very loosely it seems possible to imagine a kind of song cycle, from one track to the next, of the experience of becoming a regular resident of the U. S. after coming over from Mexico. The video clip of "The Road to Gila Bend" is one of the early tracks on the album, and though it's not quite my favorite, there's no weak tracks on the album.
As you can see from the clip, these musicians are experienced, mature artists, and the album is suffused with tasty, unostentatious guitar licks and tight, sharp percussion. Though the album, to me, is very much about the music, it includes lyrics like these, from the album's second track, "Hold On," calling to mind the migrant worker experience, or even the meat packing factory worker's experience:
Hold on
Hold on to every breath
and if I make it till the sunrise
just do it all over again
I'm killing myself just to keep alive
Killing myself to survive
Killing myself to survive
While the album really impresses me with its execution of muscianship, it also infects you with its ability to convey character and perspective from a quintessentially human point of view. There's rocking blues on this album, music with a more moody and meditative feel, a raucous and lively Spanish language track called "Chuco's Cumbia" (my current favorite), and more. There's love and loss, and through it all, a sense of belonging to or finding one's place in the wider community. Good stuff.
Anyway, I'm not really going anywhere in particular with this, but I wanted to share my impressions with you, thank Los Lobos for the CD and more importantly their continuing artistry, and also use whatever platform I have to give more exposure to voices from the immigrant Latino experience in the U. S. This album is in many ways a throwback to the old idea of the concept album, but without the precious excesses or hypersentimentality of many exemplars of that particular genre. These guys are too smart, too mature as musicians and too much in love with great music for that. If you want, you can get the album here.

I have liked Los Lobos for what seems like forever. This clip puts me in mind a little bit of old Eagles stuff.
I downloaded it a while back, it’s great and David Higaldo is especially wonderful. In 22 years of going to shows in Athens, GA I have never seen a better one than when they played here about 13 years ago. “Please Bring Peace to the Neighborhood”!
Pach need advice on the upcoming AZ Dem State Party elections….. crappy doings and machinations to put their hand picked stooge as State Chair. DFA & PDA have been working on recruiting progressive candidates but the arm twisting has begun…
Great progressive candidate for Chair which we endorse but now…. someone in power has been calling state committee persons to fix the vote.
As a group we are calling the committee persons, sending endorsement letters and emails … makes me so angry…. Any suggestions?

Sounds like this is just the thing. Keep at it. You say “as a group.” What does that mean? How about person-to-person (”Hi, I’m katymine and I’m wondering if you’ve got a minute to hear why I’m passionate about my support for________ as State Chair, and wondering how you feel about ________?”)?
Thanks, Pach: not just for this, but all your Latino- and immigration-related posts. I’m as ‘un-immigrant’ an immigrant by the Lou Dobbs standard as you can imagine: white, English-speaking, college-educated. But just as different strands of music defined migrant culture and left their mark on American culture in past decades — Irish, Italian, Polish, whatever — I find myself drawn to Latino voices, because they’re at the sharp, defining end of the immigrant experience.
(Remember the Daily Show skit on immigration done by John Oliver? My guess is that a lot of people missed the joke.)

Hey, good evening Pach. The pizza link at Latina Lista was hysterical — clearly the nutters are having a hard time finding outrages to organize around. This could devolve into hilarity, if it wasn’t motivated by hate. Oh well.

I found out about Los Lobos the same way as you did Eureka! Great band, and Hidalgo was a good fit with Jerry, they both had/have a remarkable feel on the guitar. It’s something much deeper then technical skill, they pour their souls into their songs and tell stories, great f-ing stories.
They were just at the local theater here on 12/15/06. Friday night, place was packed, beer flowing, and they just slowly ate up the crowd. Ended with a big string of songs that went something like Bertha>NFA>Lovelight>Good Lovin>La Bamba>Good Lovin>Bertha. Also did two Neil songs: Cinnamon Girl and Down by the River. Of course, so many of their own songs are magic too.
One of my all time favorite bands! Thanks for tooting their horn Pach…like they need it after 31 years, but in many ways they’re still the hottest unknown quantity out there.
I’m sleepy tonight. Ate too much, I think, though I made this awesome beef bourguignon tonight. Tyler Florence recipe.

my fave of theirs is still Kiko, especially “Two Janes”
The president, who hosted an informal, mostly social gathering of Republican leaders at Camp David on Friday night and Saturday, asked for patience from lawmakers from both parties. They had grilled Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice , Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, last week when the officials testified before Congress in defense of the president‘s plan.

One of my favorite Los Lobos songs is “Emily” off the Neighborhood CD. They also did a fantastic cover of Richard Thompson’s “Down Where the Drunkards Roll” on the “Beat the Retreat” CD. And for the kids, “Papa Lalo’s Dream” is very worthwhile.

Los Lobos! I went to hear them one night in Honolulu in 1991, in a club that had formerly been a mechanic’s shop (or so it appeared). They were stunning–so great that I had to come back and hear them again the next night. David Hidalgo’s voice is one of the greatest I’ve ever heard.

It occurs to me that it was Katrina that openned the ‘floodgates’ of dissent w/Bush. The kinda like “The Whole World’s Watching” made it allowable to say “He really screwed that up.” and not be unpatriotic. Questioning the C-i-C was not ‘at our peril’. It was the ‘tipping point’ that put Bush JAR below 40 – and it has only rarely broken briefly back thru since.
Which makes me think Joe is hiding more than what we assume by not doing due diligence. EVERYBODY knows more or less Bush SHOULD be impeached, but EVERYBODY KNOWS he won’t be.

darkblack – artiste of the year! May your vision become Jr’s reality.
One of the best things about Los Lobos is that they never, ever mail it in when they play live. Over the years (first time I saw them was in May 1985, at Irving Plaza in NY), I’ve seen them in venues ranging from the Greek Theater in LA to the front lawn of the Fairfax County Government Center in NoVa, and they are always fantastic.
If you are a fan of intelligent rock music, and you’ve never seen them live, you owe it to yourself.
TeddySF… I emailed the DFA state leaders to recommend you. I am excited that so many are taking the next step, becoming active in taking our party back!

Someone kick the corpse of democracy back under the rug, this place is starting to stink.
“On Saturday, three Iraqi generals, who spoke on condition of anonymity because Gambar’s appointment had not been publicly confirmed, said al-Maliki’s first choice — Lt. Gen. Mohan al-Freiji — had been vetoed by American officials.”
A democratic veto, no doubt.

Los Lobos is coming to my area in March. I need to get tickets.
Al Rogers has his post up at Kos… really great so far…. Love the first pic but then it is my so called Senator…
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/1/14/0749/69295
On Tuesday, a day before President Bush’s speech on righting the war in Iraq, U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., introduced legislation requiring congressional funding approval of any troop surge.
With that symbolic bill, Kennedy placed his Senate colleague from New York and Democrat presidential hopeful, Hillary Clinton, in a rather tight box.
But if Kennedy has built this “box” for Clinton, President Bush has opened a Pandora’s box for the entire Democratic Party. By taking on Iraq, he has derailed the Democrats’ domestic agenda, which was working really well for them — and for Hillary.
His aggressive push to get the war in Iraq right is forcing Democrats to deal with something that not everyone in the party was ready to deal with.

Pach: Thanks for sharing your swag. Great song too. I’d never heard of them before…
Maybe this is semi-relevant, but one of the standard jokes here in NOLA is that FEMA stands for “Find Every Mexican Available” … Hispanic immigrants have played and continue to play a large role in the rebuilding of New Orleans. I may be in the minority on this, but I hope a lot of the immigrants will choose to settle here permanently. I like what they bring.

I don’t know if you folks remember the “Pull Up a Chair” thread from November where Christy asked for folks to share holiday giving stories and charities. I emailed her about a “Secret Santa” in Kansas City who went around during the holidays passing out $100 bills in laundies, bus stations, etc. to folks on the edge, and she put in into the post. “Secret Santa” came out of the closet last November, in large part because he had been diagnosed with cancer, and wanted to speak to people publicly about giving to others before he died.
He died yesterday.
Rest in peace, Larry Stewart.

One of my favorite albums is the soundtrack to Desperado, much of which was played by Los Lobos.
I do hate to get back on subject, but this is great. Looks like a guy is playing a cajon back there.
You know that road from Nogales to Tucson? There’s a lot of stuff going on out there in those hills, man. I’m out here on the East Coast now — this takes me back there.
I have always thought it was really interesting, how Latin artists are really part of US music, and not as outsiders. Was Jerry Garcia ever referred to as “the Mexican in the Grateful Dead?” No, never, he was a great guitarist, even if his name did end with a vowel. Was Richie Valens “the Mexican guy?” Was La Bamba ever “that song in Spanish?” No, it was just La Bamba, just like Oye Como Va was always just that, nothing foreign, just a song. I was watching some group on New Years Eve with Dick Clark this year, and I had to point out to my friends, half the verses were in Spanish. Who would notice?
Los Lobos falls right in there. If you grew up in the Southwest you feel like you know these guys. But, as this recording shows, they are not “folk artists,” tripping on some ethnic thing, they are just … artists.
Blank Kludge @ 68

This sort of thing….
Cujo359 @ 105
My personal impression is that Joe will be mightily insulted if someone else brings up what he wants to let slide. He is just looking for an excuse to have a royal snit and announce that he will caucus with the Goopers. Might as well because his current words and actions pretty much insures that he will not get another term.
Wow. It’s time to review the filter parameters.
Cujo359, I answered your question with a single link, and it was trapped in mod.
But, briefly: “A dystopia (alternatively, cacotopia, kakotopia or anti-utopia) is the antithesis of a utopian society. Dystopian societies are usually characterized by extreme governmental tyranny and an exploitation of the people.”
montag @ 109
Yes, Webster’s offered “dystopia” as one of the “correct” spellings. I guess this must mean that the person cdc was refering to was irritated about the topic for professional reasons.
Helpless Dancer @ 110
Even for him, that sounds like a thin excuse. I hope things stay as they are at least for now. There’s maybe some hope that the investigation into all that petty cash he disbursed will come up with something that incriminates Lieberman, in which case there could be a special election, but even that hope seems slim. I’m not sure what the rules are, but I would think that if Lieberman jumps ship now, the next session of Congress the Senate will be run by the Republicans. If that’s true, I think the Democrats should let him rant at least until they don’t need him anymore, or he is removed from office.
If he quits or is forced out the Governor appoints his replacement and the Governor is a republican. Also, when Jeffers switched to independent didn’t the Senate change in mid term?
Cujo359 @ 113
The rules are simple–majority runs the Senate. Remember that things changed near-instantaneously when Jeffords abandoned the `pugs.
That’s what he’s holding over the Senate leadership. Piss him off, and he’s gonna make deals with the opposition.
And, there wouldn’t be a special election–the Repug governor of CT gets to appoint someone for the remainder of his term.
That’s why Joe thinks he’s sitting in the catbird seat.
Joe is the equivalent of Tom DeLay. Oh, so pious, so full of moral rectitude that he might burst any minute, and then lying every inch of the way to advance his own interests and his power.
There’s a special place in hell for him–if the devil’s assistants don’t pinch off his head and play soccer with it first.

Ooo, must get into the new Los Lobos as soon as the current palate clears. Please keep both the music and culture before us in tandem.
Blonde and bouncy Betty needs to bring Rita out of her shadow and pay attention to her these days, beyond just enjoying her beautiful songs.(*) Not only is our understanding of events in this country incomplete without attention to the lives in Latino communities here, but as Howie Klein’s post from yesterday on the political aspects of crime in Buenos Aires suggests (sorry to have missed that in time!), there are some things about the experience of other countries to bear in mind in forming our ideas of what might possibly happen here. Recall, the right wing forces in Argentina and elsewhere had consistent support from their counterparts in the U.S., and are considered by the latter to be as much role model as instruments for extending American hegemony.
(*)JimK, it’s also a Caribbean-Northern tier phenomenon, too:
* Tito Puente — b. NYC;
* Ray Barretto — b. NYC;
* Willie Colón — b. NYC;
* Larry Harlow (prosthetic Latino) — b. Brooklyn;
and I could go on. Some bright penny started Wikipedia articles on “the Spanish tinge”, as Jelly Roll Morton called it, and more broadly on Latin Music in the United States; even with the many examples there, the surface is still just scratched.
It can be just another form of racism to merely lean back and let oneself be cosseted by the beautiful sounds, but on the other hand music can be a way to open and engage the mind. Until I really begain paying attention to the pervasive influence of Latin music (and it’s often Afro-Latin, at that), I think half my brain was asleep — and don’t forget, Brazil figures into this conversation, too.
PS: Go, Teddy, go!

I am not surprised. As we know so many Dems are quite conservative, so many people are afraid to question or speak up. The few people I know in AR who are involved on a state level are from old wealthy families or their a** kissers. I think they are Democrats mostly because that’s just what their family has always been. It dosn’t really matter as long as the status quo is maintained and business is good. A lot of people are talked into joining up with party events (frozen cocktail weenies) and really see it as a way to make money or gain social status (very small weenies). For most of these folks it’s just business.

From an article about George
ArmstrongW Bush’s last stand in the UK Independent:The soldiers will aim to create mini “green zones” – cut-down versions of the area in the capital where US and British officials, and the Iraqi government, take refuge – guarded by checkpoints, sandbags and barbed wire. Residents would be issued with ID badges, and their every entry and exit logged.
To do this the US and Iraqi government forces will have to win back these areas from the militias. In particular they will have to take on the Shia fighters, many of them government backed, who have been accused of operating death squads.

Well a lot of things contributed- but I think his shit for brains insistence on his social security plan had a huge impact. Every week he’d go on the road to “spend his political capital on social security” and every week he’d sink further in the polls- and the hard headed prick would go out the next week and repeat the whole scenario- it was un-fucking- believable- and he just kept doin it.
I need to work on my snark factor. I realize the strategic hamlets were doomed from the start.
This is entirely different from the NAM and we’ve got an entirely different breed of idiot running the show.
Helpless Dancer @ 114
In 2001, Democrats extracted a concession from the Senate GOP — if control changed mid-session, the Senate would re-organize. I do not know how the current Senate organized itself with regard to potential shifts in power; LBJ was minority leader in the fifties with Dems in the majority after (iirc) five deaths, but he didn’t want control because he wanted the GOP to be forced to deal with Joe McCarthy.
rwcole @ 126
But, historically, look at his poll numbers. When did they crash and burn? After Katrina and “heckuva job, Brownie.”
When he decided to heap praise on obvious fuck-ups to prevent any shit from sticking to him, that’s when they started the real slide down.
Teddy SanFran,
Good luck on the vote. I’ll bet you’re in if it isn’t rigged. Or, alternatively, if it is, I hope you rigged it.
Last time I looked at a chart- it seems that Clusterfuck’s JARs hit a peak of about 90% a few days after 9/11 and have been on a steady slide ever since- every little fuck up has greased the skids- and they’re pretty damned greasy.

Thanks, I don’t know from rigging except on a Sailfish. There’s lots of drama, apparently, between two progressive slates, each backed by and backing two extraordinary politicians, Mark Leno (our current Assemblyman) and Carole Migden (our current State Senator). Rumors abound that Mark may challenge Carole; he’s termed out when her seat’s up.
But that’s more than you wanted to know….
Thanks for the support; I’ll report back tomorrow after the event.
Any tsunami up your way last night, ET? That was sure odd; we wondered whether to set the alarm clocks when going to bed, since we were due (if one came) at 4:45am. Then they cancelled the tsunami; all for the best, I guess….

Bush’s JAR, charted since 1/20/2001 to present.
Good news- Kissinger- after years of tellin Clusterfuck to “stay the course”, is sayin it’s stupid to be in Iraq and we oughta get the fuck out- as if he’d just heard about the situation.

Fini- looks like pretty much a straight line down after his “re-election”.
rwcole @ 132
Well, 90% after 9/11 was just artificially inflated because it was emergency time. That’s happened with other presidents at other times, and in all cases, the numbers came back to reality a while later.
But, even early in 2005, after Iraq had started to go really sour, Bush was polling at 50%. About a month after Katrina, he was in the 38% range.
I think Katrina mattered a great deal, because the performance of Bush and his administration in that emergency was so at odds with his protestations–ever since 9/11–that it was his job to “protect the people.”
People believed that because of all the bullshit and hoopla, but when it came down to actually seeing Bush and his toadies in action, the reality was at extreme odds with the prior rhetoric, and the difference was stark, indeed.
And, in the intervening weeks, when it came out that he was too busy getting gift guitars and cutting the cake with McCain and clearing brush on the ranch to take an active interest in disaster control, and watching him pull the same photo-op nonsense as a response, the people began to realize he was just hot air.
It was a major fuck-up on his part and Rove’s.
rwcole @ 142
With the exception of extreme partisan and “pull together for your country” moments its been a steady slide since the end of 2001.
The Kissinger thing is just one more thing that pisses me off about the MSM. He was lending his advice from the the begining and none of them thought it worthy of mention until recently. They had to have known.
TSF @ #136,
I can rig a Sunfish! Pretty much the same rigging as a Sailfish, I think. We’ve got the Sunfish lashed down for the winter on the lower deck on the front of our house. We only have to carry it 150 feet to activate it in late May. Right now, Shadowfax, our iceboat is waiting for the snow to blow back off the ice.
No subterranean landslides to speak of, which helped, though the shock wave traveled through very, very deep water before going shallow again, which also helped. And the quake was short. There’s always next time when you live on the rim of a gigantic volcano – the North Pacific rim.
I was at a retreat all day today on land use issues, and the chairman of our local Dem org, the Mat-Su Democrats, was there. Great guy, though pessimistic about beating back the Rethugs locally. He and I share the same secret fantasy of retiring to run charter fishing boats on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
My fantasy is to hack into Halliburton and Carlyle Group’s bank accounts, steal billions of dollars, give most of it to charity and progressive causes and hide out for the rest of my life in a coastal villa in Costa Rica or Belize. But I’m just not that skilled in the digital black arts and would hate myself for stealing to go through with it.

Think about it. Bush screamed and hollered about a Homeland Security Department, fought Congress’ implementation every step of the way, until he and his bunch of bozos figured out how to game it for the sake of his cronies. And, look how it’s turned out–gross thievery that would make Boss Tweed green with envy.
So, if Bush makes some proposal in the SOTU, you can be assured that he and his mafia have figured out how to suggest something that will make the wealthy much wealthier….

Right now I feel like what most people are learning are the same things one learns in jail. How to be a more devious criminal, all others be damned.
I learned that we must have thorough questions and demand verifiable answers from our candidates.
Just the top ten tabs I have set aside today are enough to make our founding fathers blood boil.
After we rid ourselves of these fascits we will need to clean house for decades.
I think we need to demand public only campaign finance and all campaign video should be in a very rough black and white with no flags or reference to god allowed. (especially when speaking of war)
I learned my observations or intuition about Bush (both of them) was as bad as the imagination I tried to shrug off. It’s almost a burdon sensing this so far in advance of many others.
I learned so very much and do need to make a list someday but I cannot shake the urgency of the situation we find ourselves in right now. People are finding comfort in their memories of the cuban missle crisis, viet nam, and ducking under their desks in nuke drills for christ sakes!
I have learned, I believe, that until we exercise our right to assemble, frequently and in large numbers, we will be bombing and shooting lots of innocent people and allowing these thugs to circle the wagons on their own people.
I have learned elastic has nothing on our constitution. But the power of ignoring the constitution has devastating results.

HEAR, HEAR! Just wish someone would explain to me why impeachment remains a whisper, at best. IMHO neither Bush nor Cheney dare not make a deal to resign. Fitz will prevail and expose Cheney’s crime/treason outing Plame nee Wilson. Dead Eye Dick will make the best deal he can and clutching his black dead heart, forced to resign his office. Bush will appoint some Neo-con to finish Dick’s term.
Would it not be wise to demand the new House fast track Bush’s Impeachment as Fitz’ Libby trial unfolds and forces Bush’s resignation, thrusting Cheney to briefly occupy the Oval Office? Speaker Pelosi ascends to the VP office. The House promptly raises the Impeach Cheney flag for his treasonous outing of a classified CIA agent, forcing his resignation. President Pelosi restores dignity, honor and intelligence to the Oval Office and brings our kids home from war sooner than later.
What say you?
rwcole @

yeah. fuckwad won’t show us the scar for his gall bladder operation ……
I think Cheney will resign this year for either health reasons or because of the Libby trial so on that we can agree. Where I disagree with you is in trying to fast track impeachment during the trial. We have to have investigations into the multitude of crimes he and his cohorts have committed to show the American people a damn good reason to impeach.
One of the side effects of the Clinton impeachment is a national impatience to throw that word around loosely. They need to turn over some rocks from Iraq and let the worms and other bugs come crawling out before they will support impeachment.
montag @

you can come to me for confession, my son. fahrender will absolve all. god spoke to me and promised that it would be OK. remember, He moves in mysterious ways ………
newspaperbrat @ 167
First, Fitz will work to convict Libby. That’s the charge he’s set for himself. Anything else happening will be entirely accidental.
Second, Pelosi would not become VP if Bush were to resign/be impeached/stroke out. Cheney would become President and would pick his own VP. Pelosi would not become Prez unless both Bush and Cheney were to expire/become unavailable.
It may be hard cheese, but nobody’s going to seriously suggest an impeachment of either Bush or Cheney unless the bloody fuckin’ heavens cave in or there are hundreds of millions of torches and pitchforks descending upon Washington, DC.
Bush is, by virtue of heredity, one of the elite of Washington, and they don’t hang their own. Nixon was an outsider and perceived to be an overly-ambitious climber. They didn’t feel badly about pitching him in the trash. Clinton, well, to them, he was glorified trailer trash, so, it didn’t matter.
But, Bush is one of the holier-than-you-and-me bluebloods of the Puritan/Wall Street families. He’ll be protected. That’s why he won’t be impeached unless the situation gets so bad that the country’s business grinds to a standstill.

Umm, no, on the new Congress critter. The board here is still the same–Wilson in #1 (the smarmy Bush ass-kisser), Pearce (the raving right-wing asshole) in #2, and Udall (the environmentally-minded Dem) in #3, and the Senators, Bingaman and Domenici, are unchanged.
But, if the New Mexico legislature passes the request, Udall might present it. That doesn’t mean that the House will follow through. If a state legislature confirms an impeachment request, the House has to act on it–they can simply shoot it down, which, at this moment, is likely.

Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 169
Your point is well taken – more than anything I have been unnerved by the absence of serious discussion of impeachment other than a recent FDL spate of comments postulating impeaching Cheney first. It has been my understanding that Pelosi does not automatically ascend to the VP office and Bush can quickly appoint the successor to VP. If Bush resigns first Cheney ascends to the Oval Office leaving his old office for ascention by Madame Speaker. Or do I have this all wrong?
Even though I am a grassroots veteran of the Impeach Nixon era the Bush/Cheney is a completely different kettle of fish and unlike Cheney, then VP Ford enjoyed public confidence and had not committed Federal crimes as VP.
I’m just sayin’ it seems much more efficient to hit Bush first with impeachment thus ensuring Cheney’s ascension to the presidency ensures Pelosi’s ascension from Speaker to VP only until Cheney’s imminent resignation. President Pelosi appoints her VP followed by a new Democratic Speaker of the House.
Fresh in email from Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire:
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 179
God loves him some poet types.
i’m wondering if you meant “Ace’s asses”?
newspaperbrat @ 182
I don’t think the Speaker ascends to the Vice Presidency in any instance; she’s the second in line to the Presidency. Should the Vice Presidency become vacant (through resignation of either the Veep or W, in which case Cheney becomes President) the President asks Congress to confirm his choice of New Veep.
Only way to get Nancy in the Oval is by simultaneous vacancy (through resignation or impeachment) or successive vacancies so quick no Veep could be selected and confirmed.
There are, I suppose, other ways vacancies could occur but I guess our NSA minders would prefer we not discuss those methods.
fahrender @ 173
Yep, I am keeping tabs on that but worry about the snails pace of this more laborious and complicated process presents. But hey, whatever works best is OK by me cause it spooks me every day delayed the present administration presents new dangers here, there and everywhere. grrrrrr.
newspaperbrat @ 181
Believe me there are discussions being kept hush hush by top level Dem leadership on impeachment. The strategy is not yet apparent because I think they want to see what shakes out on the investigative front.
For Speaker Pelosi to ascend, the POTUS and VPOTUS have to be incapacitated, removed from office or dead. If Cheney resigns and Bush does not have a ready successor to send to the Senate for confirmation (unlikely, Rice will probably be Cheney’s replacement) then it is conceivable the VP office may stay vacant for a short time. Highly unlikely that this would occur in the middle of a long drawn out impeachment process and would be lightening strike dramatic if it did. The chances of a Pelosi Presidency are slim to none I am afraid.
montag @ 177
i, in my infinite imperfection, misspoke when i said “new”. if, as the article states, there are other efforts in the pipeline the house may get the message, if not the first time, perhaps the second. if not then, surely the third. i believe that we must be persistent and undaunted. this will win the day.

I’m trying this quote function for the first time. Hope it works.
Katymine (if you even see this, all the way down here)- I’m in AZ, too, but not really aware of the local “machine.” What can I do to help? How can I find out the name of the progressive chair candidate — or, really, who’s running and how can the “other side” fix the vote? I’m more than happy to call; I’ll fire off angry emails (and get others to do the same). Local dems should not be doing this; it certainly won’t strengthen the dem party.
newspaperbrat @
187
This is going to sound cruel, but you have to separate what is impossible from what is possible, and what is likely from what is possible.
You have statements from the leadership of the House that impeachment is off the table. That will remain unchanged until the outcry from the public is so great that the House cannot get anything else done but answer angry messages from constituents–red and blue states alike.
Even then, the Senate is more impervious to prompt change, so, even if the House votes to impeach, a trial in the Senate could take more time than Bush has left.
Now, I hate the idea of this guy skating–not only because of what he’s done, but because of the precedent he’s set thus far. Bush has proven, if nothing else, that he can ignore Congress and run roughshod over the Constitution. That’s a horrible precedent.
But, realistically, it’s doubtful–unless investigations show such egregiously bad behavior on Bush’s part that even the fundies are throwing up in nervous fits–that Bush is going to be impeached and convicted in the Senate.
That doesn’t mean not to keep working on it, not to keep trying. But, trying to imagine all sorts of ways in which the Dems might take control of the administration before the 2008 elections is a waste of time–and energy, and brainpower.
Thanks Teddy – I appreciate clarity on the ascension process. And I wish I could vote for you and would if I still lived in your district. And BTW I thought your statement shared earlier today was just first rate!
Thanks too to Fahrender and Fini for your further clarity.

i don’t think what you say sounds cruel, and you are probably right. trying to bring about impeachment is just one strategy that i believe should be moved on. we don’t know how things will play out. but impeachment as a possibility should be in the public consciousness. the threat of it may help restrain fuckwad and his minions in the cheney administration. as the libby trial goes on, waxman’s investigations commence, the situation in iraq/iran continues, more disclosures about DHS are made, etc., etc., congress and the public may well say it’s time to do this thing. will it happen? time will tell. let’s be ready …..

Avigdor Lieberman: 30,000 Nato Troops Needed in Gaza
23:45 Jan 13, ‘07 / 23 Tevet 5767
(IsraelNN.com) After meeting with Foreign Minister Tsipi Livni Saturday night, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice also met with deputy Defense Minister Efraim Sneh and Minister for Strategic Threats Avigdor Lieberman. Taking a somewhat less optimistic tone than Livni, Lieberman reportedly told Rice that it was just a matter of time before Israel would be forced to go back into Gaza.
When Israel does undertake to re-enter Gaza, Lieberman said, it would be done in an “organized, methodical manner,” and attempt to achieve specific goals, since there was no point to the current policy of conducting occasional forays to attack targets on a one-shot basis, Afterwards, Israel would request that 30,000 NATO troops take control of the Strip in order to ensure that the situation does not deteriorate further.

Takes some mighty big brass ones to demand NATO troops when Israel isn’t a member of NATO and has been defying UN resolutions 242 and 338 for nearly forty years….
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 208
True enough but I still think this is worthy of some FDL attention. It just smacked of bitter irony that even in CT there are still people and places so backasswards that twelve of them on a jury could come to this conclusion.
Nate @ 210
And, we didn’t know that after they returned Joey Lizardbrain to the Senate…?
I understand what youre saying, her case needs attention, sure, but FDL is not necessarily the place for drawing attention to it. The reason for this is one of experience and knowledge. If you notice, the posts around here are very knowledgeable and specific. This is because the collection of front page writers here have certain areas of interest or expertise that gives them depth and breadth on specific topics over others. We dont really have a legal expert focused on Internet/online issues, this is why its not really a good FDL topic, but is a perfect topic for Slashdot where they have a lot more tech focus.

Eureka Springs, AR @ 213
Believe me, there’s nothing I’d like more than to be wrong about this, for a multiplicity of reasons. :)
I still think that the way to generate that public outcry is investigation by Congress. It puts pressure on the White House, and their response would be to stonewall. That will invite inevitable comparisons to the Nixon years, and that will get the attention of all the Woodstein wannabes in the press (even if it doesn’t get the attention of their editors and publishers).
When you start seeing stories about the military and the CIA spying on the financial and phone records of 80-year-old grandmas in Topeka, that’s when it starts to get ugly.
And, yeah, it ought to get ugly, given what these amoral pricks have been up to in the past six years.
Nate @ 215
Oh so do I, the “liberaltarian” in me is screaming about this and wanting to punch every juror that convicted her in the mouth. Some thoughts on impeachment — I agree with Montag that investigations have to come before any effort to impeach. Just because we know all, or most, of what they have been doing, many people do not know.
They may disagree with the War and thus his poll numbers of tumbling, but the lost money, the abuse of soldiers, the tricks to keep their actions silent (i.e. closing White House visitor records) — they must all be investigated.
Get the media to spin against the facts, get the republicans to try an give an explanation for their actions — and take the case to the public. The public must be hind this action, or it will fail. As it did when Clinton’s poll numbers went UP during impeachment because people saw the abuse the republicans were using against him.
And on another topic–

I really feel for that poor teacher, and unfortunately I am too well aware of what can happen when one is minimally aware of how to deal with the computer. Heavens, I have trouble all the time.
Once I was searching for some sites for exercise and OOPS up popped .. um… several sites (with pictures and video even) about a .. certain kind of ‘exercise’. The kind one should not do in public. Anyhooo, it took me forever to try to get rid of it, and until I got new spyware, I still got emails from that one mistaken ‘click.’ Remember, I did NOT ask for that type of …’exercise’… but it came up anyway.
I hope she gets a good appeal attorney. I think CT is going to be the new Minnesota. They tried to make MN red, and got the Gov. and Senator (after Wellstone died), but now we have the legislature back and Kennedy is gone. CT will learn their lesson too.
I think the toobz need a plumber. Something holding up the flow of truth more than usual today.
I’m EPU’d, but in case you’re looking for the NYT at the end of Late Night here they are. David Brooks (sigh), Nicholas Kristof and, HURRAY, Frank Rich.

Have a great day.

GranmaJ Epu’d, but hopeful you’ll see. CT legislature and CT is blue, blue, blue. It’s hard to explain why people voted for HoJoe and Rell. We are the land of steady habits, and tend to
stuboornlylook at incumbents as “trustworthy” figures. The state is oftenarse-backwardsreluctant to adopt new things. Nanny-state should be out by now. But CT is still into it. On the plus side, I heard many libraries in CT bravely refuse to use nannyware, even with state offering them money, since it’s totally against the ethics of the profession. Education as you can see, is well explosively poltical even in the land of steady habits. Hope I couldmake excuses forexplainthat darnthe state I live in.rwcole @
