LA has just seemed to be one big viral Petri dish in the last couple of years. Someone is always sick with a cold or the flu. It's not seasonal anymore, the same bugs just keep buzzing around and around. These bugs seem to linger as well. I have friends that have had colds for months. What the hell is going on? Is this happening in other places?
Now I know that they tell us that LA has a lot of pollen issues due to the Santa Ana winds stirring things up. Okaaay, well the Santa Anas have always been going on but this perpetual sickness with so many people has not.
I admit that I am a complete sucker for doomsday theories. I still have the remains of my pathetic Y2K survival kit: two cans of vegetarian chili and some paper plates. (The plastic cups were squandered during a party shortly after the new millennium.) Anyway, a friend of mine thinks that the government knows what is going on with these illnesses and they're not telling us. I, of course, now believe this too. I'm serious, what's your theory?

Hah. Insider trading!
Donita,
Last week I mentioned that you were doing his FDL thing to a my pal Neil (formerly of Catherine)
He said “I got drunk with her once”
…
Just thought I’d share ;)
I was beginning to wonder… Glad it’s not just me. I’ve been bouncing back and forth between colds and a stomach flu off and on for three and a half months now. I had ever so rarely gotten sick before recent times–maybe one cold every other year. Kinda freakin’ me out a bit. Welcome to the world of superbugs.

And, I had a really persistant upper respertory infection which took two months and 2 consecutive 10 day antibiotic treatments to beat.

Yeah…well…you know…heh. Guilty as charged. I think the whole thing is related to chemtrails personally. I get sick as hell out of the blue on days when the grid pattern of chemtrails covers the sky over Indy. Time to put on my copper mesh baseball cap I guess.
Hi Donita, feel better.
And yes, this is going on elsewhere. Got the worst cold in decades back in December. In bed for a week. People were sick for 3 and 4 weeks with it. Had a pnuemonia last spring that dragged on for months. Took a couple months of antibiotics. Remember when they used to prescibe stuff for 10 days and say - keep taking it even though you feel better? Those days are over.
Haven’t been able to listen in to spin I’m in cause of dial up, but now I’m warpin on a faster speed.
Hey Donita -
Check out Dr. Shultz/American Botanical Pharmacy in Culver City. They have a whole line of VERY strong, organic and wild harvested herbal formulaes for specific ailments. Your voodoo tea reminds me of their super tonic which you can actually make yourself if you have a juicer. Basically juice an onion, a bunch-o-garlic bulbs, any hot peppers you can find that are organic, ginger root, horseradish… all the hot things that make your eyes water and your nose run. Careful when juicing, it’s like pepper spray! Then add an equal amount of organic apple cider and there you have it. A few dropperfuls in a small amount of water and do it like a shot.
Besides the vitamin C, I would also suggest a B complex because of the extra stress on your body trying to overcome the illness.
Get well soon..
Commercial interruption: Try “Lactoferin”. It wipes out most common virus bugs. Also, flush your sinuses on a regular basis with salt water (Netti Pot)
I happen to work for a company that manufactures and markets it thru alt. health care professionals: Sedonalabs.com
It’s not just a plug - this stuff really works. I can knock a cold out in 12 hours instead of 10 days.
Kelven @ 12
I’d recommend a gas mask for preparation of this, you could sear your nostrils with this combo of ingredients. I could have sworn this is the recipe for the gas they use to train Special Forces with.
Multiple and intense colds are being reported (and experienced) in Toronto, Canada. Some problems are due to the freakishly warm weather — leaf mold allergies are no fun either…
Rest in bed, and drink plenty of liquids ;) Feel better soon…
Mack @ 5
Well, I don’t doubt it. What city are you in?
Zinc lozenges help with colds.
Vitamin D may be better for your immune system than C, when it comes to preventing bugs.
But my sinuses have been trying to do me in for the last three or four years. Not Santa Anas, it’s year-round, and my area gets the wind in the ‘rainy season’ (’Scuse me, God, where’s the rain?). Last night - not much precipitation. Today - the wind’s blowing. Again. (The fourth weekend in four for that. It gets old really fast.)
You hadn’t gotten sick for a long time and then you got a lot of colds?
1.)IANAD but I suspect your immune system got complacent. It hadn’t been challenged for awhile and the cells that normally scout the system for new invaders just went on vacation or died. So, now you have to reintroduce your immune system to a lot of bad actors and let them get acquainted. I’ll bet the number of colds will be not so bad next year.
2.) You can’t get colds unless you are near someone who already has one. So, maybe you are just meeting a lot of new people or people with sick kids. You can blame your new found popularity for this.
3.) Are you blogging more? Have you been touching a lot of anonymous keyboards and mice? You never know where those things have been. Bring along a disinfectant wipe and clean the suckers off first. When you’re done using it, wash your hands.
4.) Are you stressed? I heard a study recently that shows that people who are under a lot of stress get more colds. Your immune system is not performing at peak capacity. So, face your fears, straighten out your paperwork, pay your bills, get some extra sleep, take a nice hot bath and get plenty of sex. You’ll feel better in the morning.
No, no, you don’t have to pay me. My prescription is free.
Best I could do short notice… Coldplay ~ Bittersweet Symphony
I just got this from an email Napster sent out, they’re featuring an MLK Remembered playlist this weekend. You can check it out here: http://www.napster.com/feature.....=MIX_68612
Lots of cool tunes on this playlist. If you want to check those out, you can listen to those tracks on Napster.com for free. Full tracks, not samples, you can listen to any Naoster track 3 times before you have to sign up for a subscription or buy the track for $.99.

That is an amazing concoction. I might just try it for kicks when I’m not sick as well. Thanks, that sounds way more effective than my voodoo tea.

Well done, I saw this live online as it happened and was in awe of this performance.
I think it’s colder here (OR) than in most parts of the countr, and lots of funky illnesses abound. Strep throat, mono, lots of colds and a parent of one of my daugher’s classmates had meningitis over the xmas break. Yikes! Luckily, my flu shot seems to be working. Hope you feel better Donita!
How about a little Cold Shot, by SRV?
And slightly off-topic, I made my first iMix, devoted to NOLA, post-Katrina: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObj.....=212260784 (somehow Tipitina by Professor Longhair got edited out)

Well, I’d say there was a high probability. Catherine is not ringing a bell though.
I’ve got a cold…again. Probably my sixth time getting sick in a year. Very strange. I used to rarely get sick, even with a more intense lifestyle.
I feel the same exact way…I have been sick twice in the last 3 weeks and 3 times in 2 months…I went without being sick for I swear at least 2.5 years…..I dont know what the hell is going on
I live on DayQuil nowadays….

Louisiana Pol Slams Lieberman Over Katrina Punt
By Eric Kleefeld | bio
As Josh noted over at TPM, Senator Joe Lieberman has just taken the very surprising step of revealing to Newsweek that he will not use his chairmanship on the Homeland Security committee to aggressively probe the government’s catastrophic failings in the wake of Hurricane Katrina — in direct contradiction of statements he made during last year’s campaign. In other words, Lieberman’s basically letting the White House off the hook for its largest domestic policy disaster to date.
We thought this punt by Lieberman was pretty eye-opening. So we decided to call all the Dem Presidential hopefuls, all the Dems on Homeland Security, and a few Gulf Coast pols to get their reaction to it.
Now we have our first response. Congressman Charlie Melancon, a relatively conservative Democrat from Louisiana, has just hammered Lieberman’s decision in an interview with Election Central.
“I’m just disappointed that he’s not going to pursue it, particularly pursue it in terms of — I can understand that there’s a whole lot of things we haven’t had oversight on in six years — but Katrina is a major national occurrence.”
Melancon voiced his frustration at the lack of overall accountability that would result from Lieberman’s backing off. “I would like to see — I’m not looking for a witch hunt — but I’d sure like to find out what’s going on with the recovery,” he said. He added that even though he is from an area hit by Katrina, even he is still left uncertain about everything that has happened. “It’s as though our government has information and doesn’t want to share it with its elected officials.” No comment yet from the Lieberman camp on his remarks.
So that’s Melancon’s view. Here’s a full list of all the pols we’re seeking reaction from:
Barack Obama
Hillary Clinton
Chris Dodd
Charlie Melancon
Jim Webb
John Edwards
Carl Levin
Daniel Akaka
Thomas Carper
Mark Pryor
Mary Landrieu
Claire McCaskill
Jon Tester
John Breaux
Gene Taylor
We’ll keep you updated as reactions — or “no-comments” — come in.

OK, after reading that link it jogged my memory, Catherine opened for Letters to Cleo at the bar I used to stage manage and book nationals for in the mid 90s. Sports Live in downtown Indy, they played there in Spring of 95. Great show, but the singer from Letters to Cleo was sick and their set was subpar but still good. Letters to Cleo showed up about the time their big hit was poppin on Alternative radio at the time. Catherine impressed me at the time, and the crowd dug them too.

Fini,
You remember a band named Figures on a Beach (from Detroit and Boston)?
Donita Sparks @ 31
There are a lot of scientists who think the global warming is leading to an increase in illnesses so that makes perfect sense if the scientists are right. I dont have hard data though on that. With the chemtrails, there is hard data but no one wants to talk about it publicly. Its one of those taboo subjects we’re not supposed to discuss rationally. Like UFOs over Chicago’s O’Hare airport.

http://www.npr.org/templates/s.....Id=6797207
Mack @ 40
Yes, and I tried to book them a couple of times but they were never able to route us in. Indy gets passed over for good shows a lot, it has for
yearsdecades. The industry hates this town, with good reason I might add. It’s probably stress. Since Bush has taken the helm and steered us into more and more dangerous territory it has become natural for the nation to endure more and more stress. People are worried about terrorists. People are worried about the monsters driving this place. Job security, college, etc., etc., etc. Everyone has been under increasing stress since 2001 and it’s starting to take its toll.
Many many people in Austin are sick. I’ve come down with crap with an alarming increase of frequency. I think it has to do with our immune systems being ground under the heel of pervasive anxiety.
My wife and I have found that diet can play a part in respiratory problems. If we eat a lot of highly processed wheat flour (enriched, etc), we are more prone towards sinus infections. True whole wheat products, in moderation, are not a problem for us.
I feel, in general, food allergies are a hidden cause for many health problems. It’s difficult to do but you might changing what you eat. Personally, we’ve had great success with the South Beach process. Good luck with your cold!
Mack @ 38
You gotta get rid of that tinfoil man, it amplifies the gubmint mind control frequencies. Go for the copper mesh cap I mentioned earlier in the thread, its much better protection.

Well I think it’s all the anti-bacterial stuff that’s made the germs that much stronger. Also, I’ve noticed a lot of men’s bathrooms don’t have soap in their canisters. I go and tell the managers, and if it’s a restaurant with a sign that says “Employees must wash hands…” I cancel my order and call the board of health.
I have my own vodoo tea, it’s ginger, chipolte peppers, lime juice, garlic, onions, cilantro.
And if it’s really bad like Monday of this week, I go to a Vietnamese restaurant and order Pho Ga. One order to eat in the restaurant, and two to take out.
Are you playing in LA the weekend of Jan 26-28 Donita?

And you’re right, I’m still alive to this day because of IU Med Center staffing their students at the county hospital, Wishard. Wishard docs have saved my life a handful of times in the last 15 years.
Indy is in some ways better than it used to be, but in a lot of ways its not. If you have no imagination, no creative spirit and love corporate restaurants, corporate entertainment and corporate culture, Indy is your town these days. “It’s a great place to raise a family” is a common refrain here. What about those of us who want nothing to do with a family and like things a little more dirty/rock n roll? Oh well, as long as the Slippery Noodle stays open it’s all cool.
TRex @ 61
We should get Donita on, too. She’d Kick “Officer Vic’s” Ass …
Off topic, but Joe Klein has a post at time.com that suggests Bush’s Iraq strategy is going to fail.
“Good General, Bad Mission.”
excerpt:
“I hope Petraeus succeeds, for the sake of the terrorized citizens of Baghdad. Most military experts fear that he won’t. “If this is Plan B, we’d better start working on Plan C,” says Andrew Krepinevich, a leading military thinker. Plan C has to be a smart, detailed withdrawal from Iraq that doesn’t leave chaos and regional war in its wake. I wish Petraeus were working on that rather than on Bush’s futile pipe dream.”

hot & sour soup~whenever I feel a cold.
While I don’t really agree with the South Beach diet, my brother adopted this style about 10 years ago and it has served him well~both in health & weight.
I prefer to try to be sensible in general and listen to my body~it generally will try to tell me what it needs. Kinda hit or miss but it goes with trying to be aware of my muscles and alignment. But we “know” that spicy, mucus thining, sinus clearing stuff is what we want when these things hit. I think just paying attention to what you eat, how you eat and how you feel afterwards is good. Americans are especially disconnected from their bodies I think.
