("The Visit of Venus to Vulcan", Francois Boucher)
It looks like the Spocko story is getting some legs and the war against Snuff Radio KSFO continues apace. The SF Chronicle's piece on the kerfuffle offers a great starting point for those of you who are just joining us on this story:
The tale of Spocko, a self-described "fifth-tier" blogger who lives in San Francisco, exemplifies how one person with a computer and an Internet hookup can challenge the views of a major media corporation
Hooray!!
– and what a media corporation will do to stop him.
BOOOOOOOOO!! HIIIISSSSSSSSSSSS!!
For the past year, Spocko has been e-mailing advertisers of KSFO-AM with audio clips from its shows and asking sponsors to examine what they're supporting. Some sponsors have pulled their ads, after hearing clips like one of KSFO's Lee Rodgers suggesting that a protester be "stomped to death right there. Just stomp their bleeping guts out."
Now, bloggers and media freedom advocates are concerned about the legal reaction from Disney/ABC-owned KSFO. Shortly before Christmas, an ABC lawyer demanded that Spocko remove audio clips from his blog on the grounds that Spocko's posting of KSFO content was illegal. Digital freedom advocates counter that the clips constitute fair use and worry that critical voices could be silenced by corporations threatening legal action for violation of copyright law.
Brownshirted bitchez.
Spocko, who asked that his real name not be used because he fears retaliation, is a hobby blogger; he says he gets 15 visitors a day — and no advertisers — to his political and media criticism blog.
Those days are over, young vulcan! Thank goodness you've hung out your shingle somewhere new!
Click here to hear an audio montage of KSFO's greatest hits. Go here to watch an excellent YouTube video about this topic. Also, Crooks and Liars is reporting that San Francisco's CBS affiliate has picked up the story. We need to keep pounding on it until it really goes global. Spotlight this post. Tell a friend.
Also, Spocko is has set up a PayPal account at his new site to defray the legal and other costs incurred by this episode if you would like to assist in this fight.
As Zen Cabin's Ripley says:
Well, it seems as though KSFO Snuff Radio 560-AM is in full Panic mode now, desperately back pedaling and trying to fend off their duly deserved criticism and quite a bit of unwelcome attention. And I’m enjoying that thought immensely, believe me.
But let’s remember why this particular story matters. This isn’t merley a case of ABC/Disney trying to shut down an individual’s right to speak out and criticize. Remember why Spocko started this campaign originally.
Also, the Electronic Frontier foundation has agreed to take on Spocko's case and I consider that to be a positive development of the first water. Viva Spocko!!

BOO-YAAAAAAHHH!!
TRex, here’s a free iPhone for you
OT but frightening. H/T to Atrios:
http://www.discourse.net/archi…..ouble.html
Have a look at The Washington Note, whose latest begins like this:
Washington intelligence, military and foreign policy circles are abuzz today with speculation that the President, yesterday or in recent days, sent a secret Executive Order to the Secretary of Defense and to the Director of the CIA to launch military operations against Syria and Iran.
The President may have started a new secret, informal war against Syria and Iran without the consent of Congress or any broad discussion with the country.
We are having a big protest outside McCain’s Phoenix office this evening starting at 6 pm!
But McCain is in DC….. will not talk to the citizens of AZ except hand picked crowds just like someone we all know!
I consider that to be a positive development of the first water.
Huh?
It was a good station before it went ‘talk radio’. Too bad. (I wonder how many other stations are pushing hate like this, and haven’t been outed yet?)
Good turn out at the “Arches” tonite T.
Josh Marshall is covering the secret executive order story also.
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.c…..011886.php
“I’m getting some hints that this raid on the Iranian consulate in northern Iraq may be part of something much bigger. Is there a classified presidential directive to the CIA and DOD to take down Syrian and Iranian operations inside Iraq, even so far as operations into Iranian and Syrian territory? And is the aim here to provoke a conflict with one or the other of these states? To provoke an attack from Iran perhaps? The plan from the neocons was always to build the chaos outwards. Never too late, I guess. Watch this. Something’s up.”
This is great news. Like many folks here, I’m not too fond of Disney/ABC anyway, and their actions here strike me as beyond the pale even for them. It’s about time they were called on it.
Tiny bit off topic but I’m wondering if there are any plans to poll Connecticut voters in light of Holy Joe Lieberman’s, “new” attitude about the war and about the Democratic party? I’m not trying to slam Connecticut and lord knows I’m in no position to but I’m curious. It was obvious to most people who frequent this blog what Lieberman was but he wouldn’t have been elected without significant support from Democratic voters. I want to know how some of those crossover voters feel now that he has totally discarded the Democratic Lieberman mask. Thanks.
These hate mongers are all over the place….

I love that KSFO has two links to the Saddam snuff films right below the promotion of the Friday’s Town Hall on this.
Snuff Radio indeed.

I just saw these posts at TPM and Discourse (via Atrios, of course) and rushed right over to see if we were talking about it. My heart is pounding. I hope it’s mostly rumour.
On Topic: I’m thrilled that Spocko’s lonely battle is becoming seriously less lonely. :)

The Glenn Beck hour is a perfect microcosm of every single fucking thing that is wrong with American mainstream media and CNN should be utterly self-mortified to have this pasty, flesh-faced pansy’s whiny blathering blatherisms on their network for a freaking hour in primetime!
Don’t forget the shitty bleach job.
i love how some people are under the glamour that the Bay Area is a liberal mecca. Of course the KSFO hosts probably have a tougher time here then they would in New Jersey.. Well, maybe not any more. These people are trash and should be disposed of in a strikingly similar manner. Viva Spocko!
Mr Rex, sir looky here! (plop)
God bless Spocko!
And all those fighting on the side of the angels — which is to say on the side of sanity and human decency.
Couldn’t sleep last night after hearing about the raid on the Iranian diplomatic office. Today I’m praying like I’ve never prayed before, which is all I feel like I can do beyond calling reps who don’t care (McCain? Ha!).
Katymine — this is a long overdue reply, but just wanted to let you know that I quite belatedly discovered your shout-out to me in one of the threads suggesting I come to a meeting. Thanks, sweetie!
Unfortunately, my health situation has gotten worse and I haven’t really been able to go anywhere other than the doctors’ offices and for testing.
Please know that as soon as I’m able to, I’ll be dipping my oar back in. It aches my heart not to be able to do more right now.

OT – Matthews To Snow: I Fear Bush Will ‘Bomb The Hell Out Of’ Iran In ‘Extra-Constitutional War’
GSD*Northcountry @ 27
Nice. It snowed out here today, and it’s still cold enough that the snow is sticking around. Kinda like where you are, except for the absence of luxury and scenery.
MargaretPOA @ 12
He got 1/3 of the Dem votes – basically pro-war blue collar Dems (backed by what was left of the Lieberman machine in CT).
Mostly he got support from the many “liberal” Republicans who “believed” Liarman had changed his ways and would stop supporting Bush in lock step – so they wouldn’t feel guilty for voting for him.
I don’t think the pro-war Dems feel remorse – but some of the liberal Republicans might (Chris Shays has certainly changed his tune).
Katymine –
There you are again! So good to see you in real-time. No, don’t know any committee persons. In fact, I don’t know too many any-kind-of person here in AZ. When we arrived to this odd state we immediately were caring for my mom-in-law (terminal illness). Then after her death my accident ensued. I’m way, way too isolated here. But I’ll be fighting for every square inch of the public commons just as soon as is possible. It would help if I could drive, or at least it would help if we had another vehicle. This isn’t a good place to live without wheels and the ability to drive.
That’s why it was so wonderful to meet you! I know there must be lots and lots of other civic-minded people like you out there (I hear their intelligent voices on KPHX!), and I’ve been itching for a very long time to make their acquaintance and to be useful in some concrete way.
Thanks for the link to the site for Randy, whose name I’d heard mentioned before. It gives me the chance to learn more about him.

Intel chief: Hezbollah may be next U.S. threat
Al-Qaida still worst, but other group may be increasing plans against U.S.
katymine @ 34
Back before things got worse for me, Mr. K8 and I were among those marching up and down, landing at McJerk’s doorstep (to no avail but the attending publicity on teevee).
That was a while ago — back when there were protests coordinated with Cindy Sheehan’s camp-out at Little Boots’ pig farm in Crawford. We have digital pix and film from the wonderful event. Mr. K8 pushed me in a wheelchair so that I could stay for a long time, and from my position, waving the flag, I issued the noisy chant “Impeach President Cheney!” It did my heart good to hear lots of surprised laughter and then others also improvising their own individual themes, issued at high volume of creativity.
Even if no huge concrete results ensue from such protests, the lift in energy and momentum and morale is well worth the participation, and then some. It builds a sense of community in a state where it sometimes seems like we’re all transients living behind concrete walls with double garage doors replacing the front porch.
If you’re out there again soon, please give a couple of hoots, nice and loud, for me and Mr. K8. We’ll be back as soon as we can (although please God, we’d be so happy if this nightmare ended first).
Oklahoma kiddo @ 52

But until that day, our virtual meeting space should always be (as it is now) a space for the mutual uplifting of each other for the sake of morale and the fight to come and the community of minds and hearts.
And failing a chance to give you a real hug in person, I offer just my prayers for you — here and at your undisclosed location in St. Petersburg. We must all stay, like you, on the side of the angels.

Years and years ago, 1982 or 83 IIRC, I was taking a course in college on the Orthodox church (Russian, Greek, Armenian, etc.). The instructor was a Russian Orthodox priest, who told the following story:
There was an elderly gentleman who presented himself to the communist officials to recieve permission to take a trip. After he presented his documents, the official verified his name and asked “Where were you born?” “St. Petersburg,” answered the old man.
“Where did you go to school?” asked the official. “Petrograd,” answered the old man.
“Where do you live now?” asked the official. “Leningrad,” sighed the old man.
“And where would you like to go?” was the last question. “St. Petersburg.”
* * *
In communist Russia, this was a rather subversive joke, as all the cities named refer to the same place, just at different times. If the old man had lived long enough, he’d be able to get there today. Whenever I hear that city mentioned, I remember that orthodox priest.
Peace be with you, egregious, and with the little babes too!
Thinking like that can get you a job at AEI or Heritage, for sure. Keep it up!
Odd,
The Sunday Talking Head thread came up on my RSS feed. Just a wee bit premature, maybe?
[Mod Note; sorry Deb, we were looking at bird pictures.]
Talking points memo has an interesting comment from Condi Rice today:
“It’s bad policy to speculate on what you’ll do if a plan fails when you’re trying to make a plan work.”
To which one of Josh’s commenters responds:
“It’s bad policy when you’re sawing on a tree limb to see if you’re sitting on the limb. You might find out that you are, and then what would you do. Stop sawing?”
Matthews declaration was astonishing!!

“Yes,” the Roshi admitted, “but I’m not a dead Zen Master.”

NYT has another interesting editorial today (following the one on Tuesday which called shrub a criminal lawbreaker, in as many words).
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01…..ref=slogin
“Has Mr. Bush really not noticed that the American people long ago lost faith in the Iraqi government — and in him as well?”
I think the gloves came off there after the censorship fiasco two weeks ago (when they printed that redacted article with the redactions in blackline). Having called him a failure and a criminal, how long will it be before they call for his removal?

KSFO plans a counterattack in the form of a three-hour talkfest beginning at noon (Pacific time) tomorrow. Melanie Morgan and the other talk show hosts will defend themselves and hope their listeners will call in to shower them with love and support. They’re calling Spocko a coward for not participating in their desperate defensive move. Morgan sent out an e-mail message to her Move America Forward minions in hopes of packing the audience. I’ve quoted it here. The radio station streams their audio signal, so you can listen in (and perhaps record the results) at http://www.ksfo.com on Friday.
