I do believe it has been said somewheres’ amongst all that biblical pornography; God is neither a he nor a she. God indeed is a HE/SHE!

When I think about God, a lot of the time I think about Moses at the burning bush.

God: Moses, listen.

Moses: Who the hell are you?

God: I AM what I AM.

God is a bush? Who knew? I guess that explains a lot.

I’m pretty certain my cat is gay. Faith should be (maybe) seen and not heard. The religious industry would do well to go fuck itself in the ass. I would if I could!

All together now!

“Rent overdue
My sister has measles
Hole in my shoe
My belt’s drawn tight
My income is nil
My in-laws are weasels
My present is dark
My future’s a fright
But as long as you are there
What in the world do I care?

Though hope is low,
I’m aglow when you smile at me
Life is simple as A B C
Not a thought in my head
Not a care in the world
Though skies are grey
I’m as gay as a Disney cow
Not a wrinkle upon my brow
Not a cent in the red
Not a care in the world

I view the scene
Like that old queen of Russia
As Kate the Great
Used to say long sgo
“Nichevo!”
And so if I move
In a groove with a giddy trot
I’m a trottin’ because I’ve got
Not a bean in my pot
Not a care in the world

Though I can’t jive
I revive when I see your face
Not a limp in my merry pace
Not a crimp in my style
Not a care in the world
Though I’m a wreck
I can peck if you take a chance
Not a shine on my blue serge pants
Not a crack in my smile
Not a care in the world
Why should I fret
When I bet on a sure thing?
Like Nick the Greek
Used to say ev’ry day
“Yip-i-ay!”
And so if I’m struttin’
With nuttin’ ahead in store
There’s a reason I said before
I’ll repeat it once more
Not a care in the world!”

(Lyrics by John LaTouche, Music by Vernon Duke. From Banjo Eyes starring Eddie Cantor )

I think what’s going on is, for the first several hundred years, natural science was done by men and men only. They saw animal behavior through a male lens — “Sex is all that matters, and courtship is what you do to get sex.” Anything that didn’t fit that frame was invisible.

But in the last couple of decades, biology has been infiltrated by women, and there has been a feminization of the field. As a result, we can now see things we didn’t see before. Through this lens, affiliation and bonding is the goal, and sex is only one of many courtship behaviors animals (and people) use to accomplish this goal.

TRex, you nearly shattered my illusions about Jackman. I thought he was married with children — although I know that’s never a solid record, it still is a better predictor than not.

Phew.

I’m sorry. I’m a female but I don’t get the big whoop about Jackman.

I guess I likes my mens wid brains and convictions.

I was leaving the Met this weekend after a beautiful performance of the Magic Flute (Julie Taymor did the production. A visual treat as well as an audible one.) My 10 year old daughter snuggled close in the chilly Manhattan air. We didn’t bring coats because it was so warm in the afternoon. About 10 paces ahead, two well dressed gentlemen drifted closer and closer to one another as they walked. Suddenly, they found each other’s hands, held, squeezed and continued walking hand-in-hand. How sweet, I thought.

It is not always possible to make a direct human-to-nonhuman comparison vis a vis sexual behavior. For many species, sexual-type behavior is stereotypic and contains a meaning far from sexual. For instance, in many species (including humans, particularly in jail settings) a male will simply be demonstrating social dominance by mounting another male. There is not necessarily any sexual attraction involved. The key is in repeat, non-social dominance situations: does a male prefer to attempt to mate with other males (and the same for females)? If so, then that is directly comparable to human homosexuality.

The bonobos are complex and interesting. Sexual behavior for them fills a LOT of social roles quite beyond purely sexual. It is used to express dominance, to sooth fear or hurt, and to simply seek social bonding (a general social glue) or even pleasure. Again, whether such action is actually comparable to homosexuality, per se, would have to be based upon de facto mating behavior and predominant pairing arrangements. A male that mounts another male (or males) now and again is not necessarily a bonobo “homosexual” if his sexual mating behavior goes to females. A male that ignores females in estrus and who mounts other males virtually to exclusion would be “homosexual”.

Same goes for virtually any animal, human, bonobo, dog, tiger, whatever. Don’t try to make overly simplistic “homosexual” comparisons based purely on isolated behaviors in other species. It isn’t that simple anymore than it is that simple in humans. That said, there is enough “problem” for the Talibangesticles in the more free-form sexual expression of various non-human animals (and many humans) for them to get their granny panties in a knot over beyond merely “homosexual” behaviors all over the animal kingdom.
