As I write this, on the other side of Ann Arbor (where I'm located), Anatomy of Deceit is being printed. Since we don't have the actual book out yet, Jane suggested I use this opportunity to describe how my blogging on the Plame story got turned into a book. True to Jane and Markos' vision for Vaster Books, this one really did grow organically out of the blogosphere.
Three times over the course of the Plame Story, I've written recap posts to capture everything we knew--or thought we knew--about the case. I've always found that such narratives help me understand the big picture of the story. I did one in July 2005, not long after I got hooked on the story and first met Jane Hamsher in Plame threads at Daily Kos. I did another in early October 2005, as we were all waiting impatiently for indictments. By the time I started the third of these posts last May, I had a series. A long series.
That's when I realized I might have a book.
I might not have done anything about my long-post-that-might-be-a-book if I hadn't gone to Vegas for YearlyKos right in the middle of the series. Many of you know that part of the story--meeting Joe Wilson, the CIA Leak panel, the Firedoglake Caucus. What you didn't see, though, is that one night over dinner, I sheepishly mentioned to Jane that I might have a book.
I guess I don't have to explain that Jane has a way of making things happen.
We didn't really get started until September--and didn't really get started until October. At which point we did what--I've been told--they did with Crashing the Gates and How Would a Patriot Act. I camped out in San Francisco working with Safir Ahmed, the editor, working long hours writing and editing and revising all at the same time. Somewhere in the middle of this process, I had a day-job business trip to Asia that included getting diverted by a typhoon, sleeping on the floor of the Nagoya, Japan airport, and getting hit by a motorcycle messenger in Bangkok. Suffice it to say this period is a bit of a blur. But as part of that blur, Safir patiently dragged me out of the weeds in which I occasionally (ha!) get lost, and turned it into a book accessible--and, hopefully, interesting--to people who haven't been wallowing in this story for the last two years. What a luxury to have an editor!
Over the course of the editing process, we eliminated or defined a lot of the legal and bloggy jargon (don't worry--we kept "cocktail weenies"!). We included the background of the intelligence claims they used to "justify" the war and profiles of the key players. Where I'd use a link in the blogosphere I used a footnote in the book; I also snuck a lot of my favorite weedy details into the footnotes.
Through it all, we tried to recreate the process many of us went through as we followed this story, slowly peeling an onion to discover layer after layer of details about the case. Hopefully, after reading it people will be better prepared to see Patrick Fitzgerald peel still more layers away over the course of the Scooter Libby trial.
One more thing made this book possible: the involvement of Will Rockafellow, who is doing much of the work to make Vaster Books a reality. Markos and Jane literally formed Vaster Books right in the middle of this process (in fact, I think it happened while I was on that trip to Asia. though that detail, too, is kind of a blur). As a result, a lot of things that would have been done much earlier in the process happened as we went along, and for a while the whole project operated on a great leap of faith. Will came on in the middle of the process and really delivered on that collective leap of faith. Sort of what you'd expect from the blogosphere, I guess, but it doesn't diminish the feat! Thanks, too, to copyeditor Evan Camfield and proofreader Emily DeHuff for working some tough hours to meet our crazy deadlines.
And before you ask, I'll answer one question many people asked in the thread at Daily Kos. The graphic artist who did the cover is Josh Michels--and yes, I love the ominous feel of it! My very favorite aspect of the cover, though, is that if you look very closely, you can see a certain Vice President's manic scribblings--the newsprint is actually Dick's copy of Joe Wilson's op-ed.
All of which brings us to where we are now. Over the next two weeks the book will ship from the printers and the trial will begin. Jane and Christy and I (and others) will continue peeling the onion with what we learn in the trial. We may not, yet, get to the core of the rotting onion that is the Bush Administration, but this book is an attempt to help us all keep peeling away.

Your book comes at precisely the right moment as the trial begins.
In the future it will be an important resource for historians and students who are trying to figure out just what went wrong with the great American experiment.
A tip of the hat to the courageous eRiposte, whose contributions may never be chronicled.
It has been a great privilege to help sponsor your work. mrEgregious basically didnt question expenditures in the period leading up to the elections. Pretty good for a republican.
Dang I could have bought more shoes.
Wondering: looks like Plame wasn’t able to acquire permission to publish. Does anyone believe these orders did not come from the WH?
Secondly, if she can’t get her book published (or even admit she was employed by the CIA, by some accounts), how reasonable is it to expect that her colleagues and allies will make sure her story gets out through off the record interviews with people, well, like you?
I wonder how much of Bush’s amazing overreach in terms of executive authority to tap phone lines, read mail, etc is an effort to intimidate administration leakers…
Stark in da house!!
This is so exciting - welcome Marcy!
The chance to see such good work turned into a book that we back and support … and which can inform the wider world about this important case - what could be better?!
While we wait for everyone to join us - I’ll issue the standard request that we stay on topic in Book Salon and keep other conversations in the thread below.
Thanks!

I think eriposte ties Murray Waas with the most number of unique mentions in my footnotes. I (briefly) explain eriposte’s discoveries of the way SISMI laundered the content of the forgeries before they sent the intelligence onto the CIA. And I talk about how the administration–the same folks who said they hadn’t gotten Wilson’s trip repot–used it twice when they were trying to pretend there was still some basis for the Niger claims.
Those are just two small mentions–but I, like you, really respect his work.
Really appreciate the eloquent, as always, post, emptywheel. I’m also impressed by the high level of cooperation among the reality based community.
If you care to answer, any idea yet on how advanced sales are going?
I also snuck a lot of my favorite weedy details into the footnotes.
Thanks for that. Some of these details might turn out to be excruciatingly important.
In business school we learned to
take the moneylook for the good stuff in the footnotes. The book is amazing. Marcy did an incredible job. especially considering the short time she had to develop it fully.
And Will Rockafellow is the bomb.
Do you remember your media training? I have a feeling you may be in pretty high demand over the next year or so - and I can’t be prouder to have a representative like you presenting the reality-based perspective to the wider public!
One quick pitch–for those of you who want to support local businesses, my local indy bookstore is going to be getting books straight from the printers. And it’s run by two great guys I know from the Dean days.
Marcy -
Welcome again! In your opinion, how much vaster will the story of the CIA leak case become?
Mike Stark @ 13
I’m practicing. Sean-Paul Kelley actually had me on his radio show to talk about my quiz for lawmakers. We even had a hostile caller!
Mike - we are expecting a lot of interest in Marcy and this book … and having her as a spokesperson for the capability of the blogs to really chase down a story is going to be so good!
Glad to get in early here from Greece–Thanks to all those out there for supporting this and following this. I look forward to the book.
emptywheel—yes, Murray Waas also deserves our honor and our praise. It has been a lonely slog thru the wilderness for him.
Thanks so much for the effort in making this timely addition to our understanding of the case and its background.
There still seem to be so many unknowns. (Rumors of sealed indictiments and so much else…) Do you have a guess as to where this is leading? Do you go deeply into where the forgeries came from?
aka Will Rockafellow here…
I also want to thank Marcy for putting out such a fine piece of work in such a short amount of time. It’s a testament to Marcy and the entire team that we will soon a have a book to hold in our hands. I’m so excited to be a part of this project.
So — hypothetically speaking — what’s your next book about?
or, put a different way: having done this once, would you ever like to do it again?
Congratulations on the book, to ‘wheel, and the energetic helpers and actualizers. I am glad to hear of Markos’ work with you all, and Jane’s Promethean zing, as usual.
I was concerned in the nextHurrah thread the past few days about the partial picture Fitzgerald is willing to let fly, though the judge has yet to finalize agreement on defendant’s pie-in-sky pretrial jury instructions (don’t tell them Judy wrote propaganda or went to jail).
I bet some day the Smithsonian has a display for an architect’s rendering of a floatable Knesset, though.
(lucky for us Stark is on our side! I would not want him as a hostile caller!)
John Casper @ 10
Advance sales are going well. So well that we’re increasing our print run to meet the demand.

Will pat yourself on the back, too. You worked like crazy. It never would’ve happened without your sleepless nights.
Crazy Horse @ 20
Not that deeply–I do a review of each of the three main WMD claims, where they came from, how they were all hocus pocus. But as to the Niger claims, eriposte and De Gondi (at Eurotrib) and a few more people are still working on that.
emptypockets @ 22
Better ask me that after I am forced to deal with Novak in a dark alley.
Siun @ 17
What is particularly magnificent is Marcy’s background. She’s not from a classic investigative reporter line. If I remember correctly, she’s an academic that just got an idiosyncratic bone stuck in her throat that she couldn’t let go of. In the end, it’s an amazing testament to the power of “everyday people”.
Looking forward to the book - Also, maybe a more detailed account of the whole process of getting it all together - Sounds fascinating and illustrates something I don’t think the right can duplicate (or for that matter, even want to replicate).Innovation and cooperation that didn’t require a top down hierarchy - And an end run around MSM for prepublicity as well as publishing. Great!
Great honor to have Mike Stark on an FDL thread.

Allen On Assault Of Constituent: ‘Things Like That Happen’
Book publishing has been revolutionized, and I had a front-row seat at the revolution: CTG, HWAPA, and now emptywheel’s extraordinary contribution. Thanks for opening this process and sharing it with your fans, Jane and Kos — we are excited to see more products as well !!
Mike Stark @ 29
The phrase I prefer to use is “open source investigation.”
Mike Stark @ 29
Actually, a former academic. I wasn’t a fan of the rather insular culture of academics.
Michelle Malkin told me that “Safir Ahmed” doesn’t even exist.
Remembering how watergate produced a revalation a day for months, no longer, i expect this to be similar, and exciting. But Mr. Fitzgerald and staff are going up against the most dangerous people on the planet. who knows what’s coming.
I’m grateful that FDL has a ringside seat, and wish all of you clarity and courage through the process.
Crazy Horse @ 36
I am living to see Cheney on the witness stand. There isn’t much that could keep me away from that.
Jane Hamsher @
26
Thanks. I’m having a blast.
Jane–Should I pre-order the book through the Amazon link or somewhere else?
Having written now five books I can tell you that I never did one nearly that fast even without being hit by a motorcycle. Maybe I should try that next time.
Congratulations.
I will order one asap.
ccmask @ 39
Amazon is good, it’s nice to see those numbers climb, but your local bookstore is great too, and calling them to request that they carry it is even better.
FWIW and many have probably already thought of this, Olbermann will probably really want you for his show. Once you’re on with him, Tweety, Pumpkinhead, and the rest will follow.
Jane Hamsher @ 37
How far in advance will we know (more or less) when Cheney will appear? To what extent is this stuff scheduled?
Okay. I live in a small town, but I’ll call both sellers requesting the book. Thanks
Now here’s a novel idea: http://www.rawstory.com/news/2....._0107.html
Hence the current closing of sources…..
Emptywheel - besides motorcycles, airports and all that fun, can you say a bit more about what it’s like to shift blog posts into a book format?
Robert Paehlke @ 40
Skip the motorcycle, I’d say, particularly in another country. It’s kind of hard to deal with these things if you don’t speak the language. And I really hate to think of what would have happened if I weren’t working with a big corporation.
If you could be any kind of tree, what kind would you be?
ccmask @
39
You should also visit your Indie bookstore in a few weeks to pick it up.
One Indie bookstore in Ann Arbor that’s really aggressive in selling Anatomy of Deceit is Common Language. Check them out at http://glbtbooks.com/
Are “publicity” copies being sent to key people? e.g. Olbermann? Hope so! Congrats from one of your many FDL “sponsors”
I’m so excited about going to YearlyKos this year in Chicago. I booked my room and talked my best girlfriend (a doctor in New York) into joining me. It will be so great to meet all of you there.
Mike Stark @ 29
I believe she’s an historian; the skills are pretty much the same as investigative reporting, except you aren’t under the same kind of deadline (except prior to tenure). There are a lot of so-called ‘ordinary people’ out here who can run investigative circles around most reporters. I don’t have to go on about our ability to run circles around the so-called ‘pundits’.
They ought to shut down schools of journalism, so to that journalists can learn their craft the old-fashioned way. They strike me as something like Schools of Education, which allegedly teach you how to teach, but not what to teach. Form without content.
Very much looking forward to seeing the book, and will be down at the Elliot Bay Bookstore the day it comes out.
emptywheel, how did you keep all the myriad legal details in perspective to the ongoing story?
The whole picture for this book is quite exciting, thank you Marcy for your hard work on it, (glad you made it out of Bangkok!) and congratulations to your whole team for making it happen.
It’s also particularly good to hear (Will@25) that advance sales look that promising.
Perhaps through this, Jane will have an opportunity to better acquaint the general public as to exactly how obnoxious she is!
Siun @ 47
For me and my deep weeds, I think it’s a question of audience. It is always really tough for me to remember that not everyone has been following this religiously for the last two years. Everytime I thought I had explained everything I needed to explain some new acronym (NIE or DIA or something like that) that I just never notice anymore. Add to that the language that is unique to the blogosphere. It was, in many ways, like translating from one language to another.
Marcy, looking forward to see you “nail” Colbert on his show.
Props to all involved.
Siun- are you sending out a press release? Would be nice to have a copy of that to send to various indy bookstores that I know of.
This trial is going to be so much fun–a front row seat watching the world of journalism and the world of politics collide. I am so psyched. And Marcy’s book for the cliff notes! Booyah!
ccmask @

Much appreciated.
Is the 110th Congress going to get complimentary copies?
What’s your take on the CIA playing
“hard ass” with Valerie Plame’s book?
Doesn’t that stick a pin in all those (balloon head)folks claiming Valerie Plame was not really covert?
Jack
ValleyGirl - we’re coordinating a big press push and will be doing a lot. I’ll coordinate with Will to get all the loyal FDLers a press release version that they can give to their local indy booksellers - great idea!
I am living to see Cheney on the witness stand. There isn’t much that could keep me away from that.
I truly don’t mean to be a jerk, but I don’t see Cheney’s being on the stand as that much of an event. They’re going to ask him some tightly scripted questions, for which he’ll have well-prepared answers. The Prosecution cannot , on cross, ask anything outside the bounds of what was asked by Libby’s lawyers on direct examination.
Cheney’s going up as a memory witness. Scoooter was very, very busy and and many, many things on his mind. Period, I think.
Marcy, I tried your independent bookstore and it said it was unsecure(FWIW) and then rejected my order so my apologies.I will go with B and N or Amazon, whichever you recommend. Thanks
Hats off to everyone involved. One more example of Internet-related entreprenurial hutzpah. I marvel.
Somehow, given the blown cover of a CIA officer (who happened to be dealing with WMD), I don’t think ‘plausible deniability’ is going to be acceptable to the US public. Particularly during a Time of War.
This is the weirdest damn story that’s ever captured my attention and I think there will be a whole lot of people agog by this one — thanks so much to FDL, EW, and Vaster for helping so many of us try and make sense of this eerie and despicable House of Smoke and Mirrors.
If anyone had ever told me that A Former Hill Staffer was in cahoots with a NYT reporter to push bogus intel, using talking points scribbled by a US Veep onto a copy of the NYT, I’d have thought they were a loonie. Truly, life is stranger than fiction.
This is a whopper of a story.
Crazy Horse @ 54
As to legal jargon, I have to rely on Christy for that. But as to the details from the filings, that’s one of the things doing these narratives helps to do. To some degree, Fitzgerald can’t tell the complete story here, not least because we don’t have Karl or Armitage with an indictment. But many of those details are out there in some other form. So if you collect them in one place, then it beings to make sense.
jayt @ 64
Fitz is precluded from asking about things in evidence, like the handwritten note on the times clipping?
Marcy,
Will there be a sequal following on the trial?
Bay State Librul @ 62
As I point out here, I think it’s a real double edged sword given all the legal proceedings. The CIA has basically taken the same tack Fitzgerald has, saying it can’t even say that Plame worked for it, which by itself ought to silence the claims her identity wasn’t classified.
But I also think it might affect the possibility for the civil trial to get some traction. If Plame really can’t publish ANYTHING about her work, even though being outed ended her career, it gets right to questions of damages.
Jane Hamsher @ 60
Gonna make some stops at my local booksellers’ this afternoon. Can you re-post the info to give to them?
An old darkblack blessing:
May your book fly off the shelves nationwide, and may its contents be on the lips and in the minds of patriots everywhere
:)
Any bookstore can order using this number: 0979176107.
My local store was delighted to take a pre-order, and it’s nice to be able to chat the book up with smaller sellers, whose staff often read books recommended by customers, and who will often give a book better visibility when they think it is something their customers will find of interest.
BTW: “State of Denial” flew off the shelves in my store, so they know there’s a market for more info about current affairs.
And I’d be first in line to buy an audio version for my iPod… any chance…?
ccmask @ 39
Use emptywheel’s link to her “indy” bookseller in her commentary!
I used amazon hours before I heard about her friend. Marcy, any shot of an autographed copy? I might order a second one for me, and leave the first one out for bookcrossing in a coffeehouse!
Marcy, I’m excited for you, and for the rest of us who bought a copy.
Teddy and all - here are the Publication details:
Anatomy of Deceit: How the Bush Administration Used the Media to Sell the War and Out a Spy
Marcy Wheeler
ISBN: 0979176107
ISBN-13: 9780979176104
Format: Paperback, 176pp
Publisher: Vaster Media, Incorporated
$14.95, available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Borders, and independent booksellers
Also, whence the name Vaster Books?
Fitz is precluded from asking about things in evidence, like the handwritten note on the times clipping?
Correct. The only way to get into that is to, first, have those notes in in evidence, via testimony (on DIRECT), from Cheney, or someone, who is familiar enough with his handwriting so as to assure the Court that it is, indeed, the handwriting of Cheney.
And then, one would have to call Cheney as a witness in order to ask about it - can’t do it on cross.
Fitz doesn’t have Cheney on his witness list - except to the extent that most lawyers normally put a catch-all at the bottom of their witness list which says - ‘and any witness that (the other side) may call’.
Now why the hell didn’t I actually REPEAT the link to her indy bookseller? dumb dumb dumb…
JoyB @ 74
I’m going to try to sign the copies that get pre-ordered from Keith’s store (pending my DC trial schedule). And I’ll be doing some book events in the upcoming weeks. I’m happy to sign anyone’s book, though, if I can find you.

Prognosis: Prison?
Congrats again Marcy. Thanks Jane, FDL, and Markos for creating Vaster Books and helping to make Anatomy of Deceit a reality.
I’m planning on donating a copy to my local library as soon as my orders arrive. The public library shares a digital search engine with about 15 or 20 surrounding towns in the Boston area. Once Marcy’s book is entered into the system, it will pop up during anyone’s search on this topic.
Marcy, any thoughts what you would say if you run into Judy during the Libby trial?
Hugh at 2:55 pm
LMAO.
I don’t know for sure, but my guess is that this will make the vast left wing conspiracy just a little bit. . . vaster.
Marcy — does your book draw any conclusions as to whether Fitz is continuing to investigate other officials (Cheney? Hadley?), or whether he will close up shop once the Libby trial is over?
Great work Marci! It looks like that you have the only book that is coming out about the Plame investigation in time for the trial…. and I can’t wait to get my copy!
(and Siun, are you the person who did that incredible job of coordinating media relations for Yearly Kos last year? If so, its great to have you working on this team).
I’ll buy a copy. I’ll also ask the university library to buy a copy.
I’d sure like to buy Prognosis:Prison someday, as well.
This is extremely exciting.
I would humbly propose that FDL readers who are interested in furthering Marcy’s cause do the following:
1. Buy the book.
2. Call your local town and university libraries and request that they order the book.
3. Go on Amazon and arrange for copies of the book to be sent to your friends and relatives who will need a guide to help them through the trial.
4. Donate via the paypal link at Firedoglake to support Marcy/Christy/Jane and others as they trek to DC to cover the trial in person.
The Libby trial has the potential to be a huge story in the traditional media. It has all the necessary elements - no need to recap them here.
During the trial, we can expect to hear a lot of misinformed and disingenuous commentary from all the usual pundit suspects.
Despite my low expectations for the mainstream pundits, I believe that this trial could be a breakthrough moment for the people with real expertise - people like Marcy, Christy and Jane.
During the trial, citizens across the nation will be looking for someone who can help them to understand the Valerie Plame saga. There will be a hunger for factual, detailed, coverage of this cloak-and-dagger tale.
The Libby trial really is an ideal moment to show everyone the type of in-depth coverage that the progressive blogosphere can provide.
I am looking forward to it.
pdaly @ 81
The book does not entirely lack input from Judy Miller, so she knows it’s coming and likely knows the direction of the book.
But if I see her after she testifies, I will likely ask about some of the questions she has thus far dodged using the excuse of the trial. Honestly, I’d like to know more about the inner workings of the NYT in response to the subpoenas and to her attempts to publish a story on the Wilsons. I still doubt she’d answer, but it’s worth a try.
actually, on second thought, I do have a question…. in working on your book, did you have access to any of the players that you were writing about? Or is it based solely on what is already in the public record?
p.lukasiak … YKOS media? yes, thank you! I’m also the “press secretary” for FDL and will be working with the Vaster team to get us some good attention … given the great tale, I think it will be a pretty easy job!
TeddySanFran @ 76
I’m not positive, but I think it is a reference to the “vast right wing conspiracy.”
The progressive movement is vaster.
emptywheel @
87
The Judy Miller sections are some of the best. Oh she’s gonna love it.
emptywheel @ 14
Problem with this bookstore, they assume your state is Michigan.
pontificator @ 83
No conclusions–it is a somewhat open-ended book (though with a sense of clear direction where the investigation would head). Also, I think further investigation depends entirely on two things, 1) whether Fitz got traction on the cover-up side of things (like disappearing emails) and 2) what transpires at the trial.
Congratulations, Marcy, and kudos to the new publishing enterprise.
I was wondering what you most hope will be revealed/confirmed at trial that we don’t already know? Or what we may know but that most needs repeating by the media?
Speaking of Judy, I’m not going to hold my breath to see “Anatomy of Deceipt” reviewed in the NY Times.
Me too!! I just ordered one from your “recommended” bookseller. That was before I got to the post about “request @ your local independent bookseller.” Ah well.
My local bookseller [Washington DC] is Politics & Prose, which is often a site for the broadcasts on C-Span. I dearly hope this will be on your “press tour.” All the big political names come here, y’know!! And when you come, I’ll certainly be in the front row.
Seriously, I do hope P&P is on your “hit list;” it’s quite influential in this area.
Have you thought about contacting Al Franken & Joe Conason? Because of Conason’s columns in Salon and NYObserver, this might bring more exposure. And Jon Stewart, of course.
Finally, I send “care packages” to folks through AnySoldier.com. Do you think there might be a way, somewhere down the line, to purchase several copies at a slight discount to send to troops there?
The Perfect Fitzmas Gift.
Frederick Pohl had a series in the ’80s that featured a protagonist who had uploaded himself into an AI type of life. He existed within a web-like system and could tap any sensor, databank, CPU, etc.; he became, as he put it, “vastened”.
That’s the first thing I thought when Jane revealed the name of the new entity.
Can’t wait! I’m in for a copy and will be offering at least a couple as gifts.
Following threads and comments over the past year at TNH and here, I am awed by the reach of understanding tapped out with known information. That said, I eagerly await any hint of twists that no one could have forseen from the stance of being on the outside looking in.
scarecrow @ 94
I think that Ari–and to some degree Cathie Martin–will testify to a much more active campaign than has been revealed so far in the indictment. One of them is likley the immunized witness, though, so he or she is likely to get hammered by Libby’s team. Just as an example, though, we only recently learned that Martin and Libby’s personal assistant witnessed Libby’s side of his call to Matt Cooper, so that charge is more than a he-said he-said pitting Libby against Cooper. I have no idea why Martin was in the room, but I am curious to hear what she says.
We’ll also find out more about the context for Libby’s early data collection on the Wilsons. I suspect such details will be rather damaging to his memory defense.
jeffreyw @ 97
I didn’t know Pohl created Max Headroom!
FWIW, we sent rubber stamps to Congress. Maybe it’s worth thinking about sending complimentary copies to the various reporters who are assigned to cover the trial from the NYT’s, WaPo, A.P., Russert, Tweety, … .
p.lukasiak @ 88
I did talk to a few of the people involved, but it is mosly open-sourced.
