AP/Charles Dharapak
for the week ending 1/6/07:
Sssshh. Don't tell anyone and don't ask me how I got my hands on it, but I have a draft copy of Bush's upcoming speech on his latest new strategy for victory in Iraq. So without further ado, let's get to it.
Good afternoon. As you all know, I held important meetings last December to talk about the situation in Iraq. I went on a listening tour to hear what different areas of government had to say about
my legacythe establishment of democracy in Iraq. We had productive discussions abouthow I'll blame the Democratsour shared duty to forge a bipartisan approach to succeed in the Middle East. I even worked during my Christmas vacation to make sure that we had a plan for a strategy to succeed in Iraq. [pause here for laughs]The American people need to understand that the Iraqi people want us to succeed, and that a successful Iraq means that we're safer here in the United States. Iraq is in a vital region of the world and the security of the American people depend on victory in Iraq. And we've
gotten off to a good startwithseen the Iraqis make their own way with the execution of the man whotried to kill my dadkilled his own people, Saddam Hussein.I asked the generals on the ground for advice and I
ignoredlistened to what they had to say. I met with Prime Minister Tony Blair and one of Iraq's most influential Shia leaders, His Eminence AbdulCasey al KasemAziz al Hakim. I met with the Iraq Study Group chaired by formerfamily friendSecretary of State James Baker and former Congressman LeeGrantHamilton and read their book.I dog-eared the pages where I could twist their words [laughs].I seriously considered their recommendations and I appreciate all their hard work and bipartisanship.I heard from
nearly everyonethe Democrat leadership that I need to consider ways to draw down our troops because otherwise the Iraqiswill hide behind our skirtshave no impetus to stand up. It was real interesting, what they said. Iwdon't agree with this perspective. I believe that we need to increase ourpresentspresence in the region, because, in one ofmy favoritethe leading statements of the Iraq Study Group's report, they write that leaving would "almost certainly produce greater sectarian violence" and lead to "a significant power vacuum, greater human suffering, regional destabilization, and a threat to the global economy." See, the withdrawal of troops would also expose our energy resources to terrorists and sectarians. It's very important tomy friendsour national economy that we have no disruptions in the flow of oil and not be held hostage byforeign oil companiesterrorists.Generals Abizaid and Casey disagreed with my idea of a troop surge and told me that our military is stretched to the breaking point. That we don't have enough ready reserves to call up for any kind of sustained presence in Iraq. Both General Abizaid and General Casey did a heckuva job in Iraq, but after we talked,
I told them they were fired if they didn't tell me what I wanted to hearthey announced their retirements. As you know they have been replaced by two fabulous guys, Admiral William Fallon, whose experience in the Pacific will provide a new and novel approach to the position of head of U.S. forces in the Middle East, and Army Lieutenant General David Petraeus, who has done such a great job training Iraqi security forces, will be the top American general in Iraq. Both Admiral Fallon and General Petraeus
said the right wordsthink that increasing troop numbers is, in the long term, the solution to calming the sectarian violence. Therefore, I am calling for a surge of at least 20,000 troops over the next several months to protectour intereststhe people in Iraq and the Middle East region. In addition, I'll be asking Congress for $1 billion to provide jobs forDick CheneyHalliburtonthe Iraqi people to better involve them in the growth of their country.Thank you, and now I'll take questions.

We're never going to be able to leave Iraq so long as Bush is in office. As James Wolcott says:
From the invasion of Iraq to the present disarray, President Bush's learning curve has been a flat line of fatal error followed by fatal error.
Kerry at 100 Monkeys Typing analyzes Karen Hughes' Karl Rove's the President's "cotton candy and unicorns" editorial in the Wall Street Journal. And NTodd at Dohiyi Mir reminds Bush that he wasn't exactly "dignified" at Karla Faye Tucker's execution; The Kenosha Kid suggests recruiting ideas for that surge.
Oh, jeez. White House counsel and resident cosmetics expert Harriet Miers submitted her resignation last week. Attaturk at Rising Hegemon gets a sneak peak at her upcoming tell-all memoirs. And while Miers never got the chance to swap eyeliner techniques with The Frying Dutchman, Lawyers, Guns and Money's Scott Lemieux finally understands the late Chief Justice Rehnquist's concurrence in Bush v. Gore.
Tom Burka at Opinions You Should Have provides a year-end wrap up, while Fanatical Apathy's Adam Felber and The Poorman Institute's Editors give us their predictions for 2007.
The Democrats returned to power in Congress, and suddenly, the Republicans are whining about being mistreated. Norbizness at Happy Furry Puppy Story Time strains the sniveling through "The Simpsons" filter, and Bring It On!'s Steve O. crystalizes the moment in one big "WAAAAAAAH!"
But that wasn't as loud as the shrieks coming from the right wingnutosphere when they found out that Keith Ellison was going to be sworn in on Thomas Jefferson's copy of the Koran. TBogg submits his nomination for most insanely stupid quote of the week, while Sir Oolius at She Flies With Her Own Wings asks Dennis Prager to take the moral relativity test.
Jesus' General requests that Moqtada al-Sadr fix the Medicare donut hole.
Brilliant at Breakfast's Jill has a few choice words for the walking ebola virus Glenn Beck on behalf of the residents of New York City. And speaking of crazy people, how about that Pat Robertson? Heywood J. at Hammer of the Blogs tells the Prophet for the Batshit Insane to STFU already.
Things have gotten mighty quiet over at the Batshit Insane Anchor Baby's site since the revelation that Jamil Hussein, the Iraqi eyewitness to the Shi'ite burning of Sunnis, is a real person. Brad R. at Sadly, No! wonders how Malkin will slither out of taking the blame for revealing the identity of Hussein, who is now languishing in prison for telling the truth.
No More Mister Nice Blog's Steve M. marvels at the sexual psyche of Republicans, while some blogger who goes by the nym Darkblack has a rather entertaining graphic of the new Speaker of the House. Now if only someone would give Virgil Goode that treatment. Deborah at If I Ran The Zoo explains.
Clif at Outside the Tent can't quite believe that Pammycakes would buy into the long-discredited email that compared FEMA's response to Colorado snowstorms to post-Katrina New Orleans, but then again . . . . And Mock, Paper, Scissors' Tengrain finds a NOLA story that will curdle your blood.
d r i f t g l a s s provides the most comprehensive exegesis on troll behavior I've seen to date. A human Wikipedia, that driftglass.
Oh, and by the way -- did you know that Gerald Ford died?

Now, now, you two…
don’t make me turn this car around!
…oddly absent is the use of the word ‘foment’
Does Bush have a tracheotomy scar? I mean, look at his neck! Jeebus. Anyone know?
Tlazolteotl @ 7
His wattle has gotten the better of him.
I don’t know, it looks like a giant hole, like the Underpants Gnomes have been drilling for oil while he slept…..
No more troops unless members of the Bush family are front and center in the surge. Of course, that will never happen. The American Royal Family does not serve. It only takes.
I don’t see members of my Democrat party speaking out about the recent information that Israel plans to attack Persia.
LONDON - A British newspaper reported Sunday that Israel has drafted plans to strike as many as three targets in Iran with low-yield nuclear weapons, aiming to halt Tehran’s uranium enrichment program.
Tlazolteotl @ 9
Maybe it’s the port where Cheney’s words are inserted into the ChimpBot 3000’s voice simulation module.
gr8 stuff, couldn’t tear myself away…loved Bush’s speach.
I would add strike the last line something along these lines;
thank you, and now if you’ll read the questions I provided I’ll take questions. “
Badwater @ 10
Atrios noted this morning that CBS asked “When is Prince William going to get a job?”
Tlazolteotl @ 9
Nay, that is the little slot the pixies(Rove, Hughes) that control Bush look out of to see where they are going.
perris @ 13
hmmm, my strike tags don’t work, damn it…they work in preview though so I don’t get it
perris @ 13
Somehow, I don’t think this will be a speech where Chimpy takes questions. The questions would make him too uncomfortable and make him grunt uncontrollably while they were being asked (u know how he is prone to do). He’ll say ‘thank you for coming’ then storm off amid a fury of barely intelligible questions about funding and manpower.
Thanks watertiger. LMAO at the speech.
[…]
Anyway, it does make me wonder if Bush didn’t have a serious overdose back in the 70s that required him to be on a ventilator for some period.
Either that, or he’s morphing into a porpoise. (George, the blowhole is supposed to be on top. Shit, you can’t do anything right, can you?)
@ 7..Too high for a trach scar and too low to have sucked his brain out.
twolf1 @ 17
my strike tag didn’t work, it’s supposed to strike out “I’ll answer the questions I provided for you to ask” and replace it with “I’ll take questions”
stike doesn’t work for me thogh
off for a night of gamblin

At least “the twins” have a job. They party, travel, and spend money. Their parents must be so very proud.

Thanks, WT.
Iraqi’s stand up, we stand down, pretty soon we got us a “wave”.

Watertiger,
I agree with Oklahoma kiddo here. The spate of news stories, mostly in the European and Israeli press this past few days over renewed possibilities of an aerial campaign against Iran by Israel, The USA or both are disturbing.
What is even more disturbing is the lack of comment by the Dem leadership on this issue, other than Steny Hoyer’s comment in today’s Jerusalem Post indicating that he’s in charge of the official Dem Iran policy, which will be at least as tough as that of the GOP:
Iran with nuclear weapons is unacceptable, new House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told The Jerusalem Post hours after entering the party leadership position.
The Maryland Democrat said the view is shared by his party, rejecting assertions that the Democrats would be weaker than the Republicans on Iran.
He also said that the use of force against Teheran remained an option.
Hoyer, second only in the hierarchy of the House of Representatives to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is charged with articulating and strategizing on party policy.

Hum… Prince William does have a ‘normal’ job now. He’s an officer in the Palace Guard, a branch of the British military. Prince Harry is fighting for his right to go to Iraq as he’s also an officer in the Palace Guard. Harry’s unit is supposed to go to Iraq around mid-year. Parliament is in a bind over that one, as Harry is 3rd in line for the throne. The Queen isn’t a spring chick any longer, nor is Prince Charles.
The shadow under Bush’s chin could be caused by the thyroid protruding more than normal. Bush sr had Gautier’s (sp??), which is a condition where the thyroid becomes enlarged. Thyroid conditions can be genetic (says a third generation documented with under-active thyroid).
Lovely speech Mr Bush. Care to listen to reality now??

Hey, I’m just the comic relief here, people.
I always liked how Terry C. used to refer to her as “SHWERP.” Self-hating rabid wall-eyed Pekingese.

Nah, I find the Asian-bashing kind of crap offensive. Malkin’s got enough hating going on for the entire Eastern Seaboard.
BTW, Spocko the Mousekiller has a new home from which to battle the evil Gloved Ones.
As they say, there is no such thing as bad publicity!
Now that the indies, greens and dems have merged their powers, shouldn’t the discussion include some tidbit of vectoring towards our mutual fantasy of living in a constitutional democracy, free from usurpation by rogue elephants?
Petite moi. (h/t WT.) Notice the carbon spewing entity undergoing mastication. Next up…the secession of 1600 Pennsylvania ave.

Top 10 Reasons Harriet Miers Resigned as WH Counsel
1) Wants to spend more time with family.
2) Checked into rehab.
3) Six years is way too long, let alone a lifetime appointment.
4) Got videotaped stealing shit from Target
5) Reached her expiration date
6) Turned into a kind of cheese (don’t look too closely as you pour her down the drain, or you’ll gag)
7) Figured out that he’s not leaving Laura.
8) She put 12 years of service into 6 (time flies when you’re having fun)
9) It’s Clinton’s fault
…drumroll…

Hey, I’m just the comic relief here, people.
And you do that rather well…..
No, really, let’s fence off the “peoples house” so that nobody gets in or out without a background check and that all record of visitations are scrubbed from public scrutiny. It will be a great place to hide some really bad people in bunkers and keep the whole country guessing what kind of folksy hi-jinks goes on under the color of authority.
Just want to make a point here . . . have we confirmed Jamil Hussein has been imprisoned yet? I don’t think that’s come down the line, so far as I’ve seen. The warrant yes, but his capture . . . ?
What was this last election about? I ask myself. Iraq, I think. Seems to me that if it weren’t for the so called war, my party would have not recaptured the House and Senate. Perhaps I’m wrong.
Awesome. Thanks for the link. After the latest set of fiascos for the illiterati on the right, I’m trying to start up a meme for a new nickname for them collectively. Guess it depends on how well the show I stole it from does. Check it out, let me know what you think.
Darkblack gets a gold star in his PhotoShop notebook today. :)
Hey! Wha’ happen?!

Ted Stevens got mail?
WaPo article on lack of enthusiasm for “the surge.”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....01489.html
“When the first U.S. team arrived, its members looked to reenergize the industries as a key element in jump-starting the economy. But the subsequent Coalition Provisional Authority, run by L. Paul Bremer, opted to scrap the effort and emphasize a free-market economy, even though Iraq was ill equipped to make a dramatic conversion. The failure of a free market and the lack of both local and foreign investment has led the Defense Department to launch a massive reassessment.”
I thought it was just me…I couldn’t get onto the lake for a little while.
Another thing…what about the large base built in Iraq?

It’s quite funny to see how easily they all get their chain pulled, isn’t it?
The Israelis leak something to the Times of London, which is sort of the equivalent of a New York street fight, “gawd, hold me back before I kill `im” routine, and then they politely decline to comment, knowing that they’ve gotten things in the US stirred up again.
The emphasis here will be, “geez, we’d better attack with conventional weapons before Israel does something stupid and dangerous.”
Like Israel wants to unite Sunnis and Shia alike against them?
Like Israel wants to have the entire Muslim world accusing them of genocide? (And, make no mistake here–mini-nukes of the size described would do little more than shake the shit out of facilities buried under seventy feet of rock, and would kick up a whole lotta fallout in the process.)
Nope, this is a reminder to the neo-cons: you haven’t been paying enough attention to us lately.
Spocko’s Brain Lives!
Vamanos!
Go, and say “Hola, Spocko.”
so.
The last election, voters favored the SURGE, okk41. Have you not been paying attention?
One Rovian aspect that gets too little attention is the post-vote pivot. After hardly mentioning it at all in his “re-election” campaign, destroying Social Security became Junja’s mandate for 2005. Now that his 2006 midterm victories are behind him, we suddenly hear about the need for a SURGE.
And, reliably, McCain and RGJoe are flanking W’s right. While not nearly as snarky as expected, I really did enjoy ChiDyke’s onsite reporting from the AEI Hellmouth.
Sample:
Pony-boys, both of them. I also enjoyed Old Lord McCain stumbling over “substantial and sub– sustained” over and over, while it came flowing like honey offa RGJoe’s blubbery lips.
… oh, and:

smarty-pants commenting broke the truck
The Bush name is now political poison, thanks to Dubya.
Will anyone in the Bush crime er, uh, I mean political, family ever hold elected office again?
I sure don’t think so. That’s why poppy Bush was bawling like a baby at Jeb’s farewell gala.
Thoughts?
Book Salon with Ms. Wheeler is available upstairs.
Gordon Brown, Tony Blairs successor was pretty harsh on the Hussein execution.
Seems he wants to let it be known early on that he doesn’t dig the handy work of Bush’s henchmen.
Also, it looks like the axe mught be swinging for Condi Rice.
An article today is fingering her for signing off on the Hussein handover.
Poor Condi, she’s gonna find out what happens to people when The Decider decides they aren’t useful to him anymore.
Overdone Rice.

P.S. Yes, the chatter about Iran and military action is getting worrisome. Looking like the same old pre-strike demonizing game. Not that Ahmadinejad is helping himself.
