"I'm expecting Michelle Malkin to get to the bottom of this." — Glenn Reynolds
So are we all, Instacracker, so are we all. Unfortunately, the wingnuts are only focused on the fact that the left is laughing uproariously that they once again got busted for just making shit up, and Malkin has gone curiously silent for a couple of days.
Glenn Greenwald:
Here, Dave Neiwert documents but a fraction of the false accusations they made against AP, and during the controversy itself, he made the excellent point that this whole "controversy" was based on denials by the "Iraqi Government" and the U.S. military of Jamil Hussein's authenticity — military and government denials which they mindlessly ingested and accepted as True like the good little authoritarians that they are.
To this superb commentary I want to add but one point — there is nothing new, unique or surprising about this incident. Exactly this has happened repeatedly, time and again. This is what the right-wing blogosphere does. It is who they are and how they function. The only difference here is that they were so shrill and relentless in their attacks on AP, having prattled on about it for weeks without pause, that they actually pushed their accusations against AP into the national media.
And, to their great credit, AP — which continues to aggressively defend its imprisoned-without- charges Iraqi photojournalist Bilal Hussein (whom right-wing bloggers repeatedly accused of being a Terrorist) — fought back against these accusations. And now the right-wing blogosphere stands revealed as what they are — a pack of gossip-mongering hysterics who routinely attack any press reports that reflect poorly on their Leader or his policies, with rank innuendo, Internet gossip, base speculation, and wholesale error as their most frequent tools of the trade. They operate in packs, constantly repeating each other's innuendo and expanding on it incrementally, and they then cite to each other endlessly in one self-feeding, self-affirming orgy of links, as though that constitutes proof.
And they are wrong over and over and over — and not just in error, but embarrassingly so, because so frequently their claims are transparently, laughably absurd, and they spew the most righteous accusations without any sort of evidence at all. The New Republic has its Stephen Glass and The New York Times has its Jayson Blair. But those are one-off incidents. The right-wing blogosphere is driven by Jayson Blairs. They are exposed as frauds and gossip-mongerers on an almost weekly basis. The only thing that can compete with the consistency of their errors is the viciousness of their accusations and their pompous self-regard as "citizen journalists."
I am desperately afraid that with posts like this, Greenwald is taking unfair advantage of the fact that he is much smarter than I am in order to leap out of the "honorable mention" category and edge me out for a coveted spot on the Most Annoying Liberal list next year. Now, Michelle Malkin is wrong about things with a regularity that other people show in brushing their teeth. And BradRocket reminded me today about just a few of her golden oldies (John Kerry shot himself on purpose, remember that chestnut?)
It just so happens that I recently got ahold of 5 copies of the documentary "Redstate," and we haven't had a good contest around here since the Stupidest Thing Joe Klein Ever Said days.
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

“What if we’re winning?”
– Glenn Reynolds
What these media neo-nuts do is a form brainwashing.

I’m thinking something like “best post about the stupidest things Malkin has ever said.” A way to show our MSM bretheren not only that they should never take her seriously ever again, but also to highlight some of the fine work that has been done on the left about her irrational ditherings.
I mean for fuck’s sake, Jean Dixon had a better track record.
I think maybe Malkin is now a stay in bed mom.

You’ll get over it, Jane, but how’s Kobie taking it?
I don’t envy anyone wading through archives of Malkin quotes to look for the stupidest thing she’s said.
Her brand of nattering ignorance doesn’t wash off easily.
Jane, you’ve got serious competition for most annoying liberal honors, but we’ve got your back. Do what you do best and we’ll munch our popcorn and watch the nutter beasties whine and cry and post lies.
This contest would require reading Malkin? I’m a sadist, not a masochist.

Have Dave Niewert and Michelle Malkin ever debated an issue like USA WWII concentration camps in a public forum? If not, can we help make this happen?

Molly:
Hey firepups.
I’m on duty only part time as my main responsibility right now is restoration of a formerly high energy humanitarian.
Hope other people will jump in to fill the gap. Am mostly ok but really have to conserve what little I have left.
Please let’s not go to war against Iran. Hope people are learning more about this hideous possibility and are working to stop it.
egrDau is doing great stuff in the DomRep, good visit w her. Son off tonight for more college. Oldest dau going back to SF for productive work and happy married life.
I feel sad and guilty at pulling away from the fray but I must protect and conserve my core. Or lose it.
Please people if you are thinking, should you become more involved, YES FOR GOD’S SAKE YES, jump in here and let me feel that I can take this time to save myself. I thank you.
Do I have your permission/blessing?
Please tell me this is ok.

Really, maybe the contest should be to find something Malkin said that wasn’t stupid. Now that would be a difficult search…
Malkin transcends stupidity.
Ed*ard Teller @ 13
I think you may be a sadist, too. I’d enjoy seeing Malkin dimembered on TV. I would pay for tickets to see it live.
Take care of yourself egregious so you preserve your strength. Lighting a candle on my end…
egregious,
You certainly DO NOT need our permission to take care of yourself.
You certainly DO have my/our blessing.
Remember when the flight attendants tell us to put our own O2 masks on before we can help the kinder. Please put your own mask on and breathe deeply. We’ll be fine.
Just check in once in a while so we know you are OK. Please?
egregious @ 15
Best wishes, egregious. I alway appreciate your comments. I hope to see many more when the time is right.
We will back you all the way because we loves us some egregious. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
Are you thinking what I’m thinking?
I think so, Jane, but where are we going to find water wings at this time of night?
but, but, but…we already had a Malkin contest…..
egregious @ #15: Real good to see you back! Maybe you could take some of your time off to visit this on-line art exhibit:

bless you, egregious
Phil K @ 4
What if I could shit gold bars, I’d be a millionaire!
egregious, just take care of yourself. When we can’t do any more, it’s time to stop and rest. To quote serveral people here, it’s a marathon and not a sprint.
Aak! I don’t want to have to wade through Malkin. Can’t we outsource this to Roy Edroso? Or just take everything she’s said and declare a million-way tie for first place in the “Stupidest Malkin Utterance Ever”?
Mack @ 17
I’d say she personifies stupidity.
I am impressed with Glenn’s vacuousness of the subject.
[Mod Note; it took a moment to realize you were referring to Reynolds, not Greenwald]
There are so many jackasses on the right–Malkin among them–that it’s difficult to take anything any of them say with more than a grain of salt.
But, why the drones in the MSM do is another matter entirely. Their rhetoric is ideology-driven, and that ought to be enough to disqualify it as without objectivity. Maybe there ought to be a contest for the most gullible MSM pundit/commentator/newscaster/talking head/rube who has been consistently sucked in by the idiot bloggers of the right….
egregious—you’ve certainly done your part to help us get to this point. Now it’s time to take time for you. We’ve got the rest covered until you’re ready to fight the next round.
Yeah, dat Joe Klein thing was very cool. But really I thing setting the bar at ‘most annoying liberul’ is putting it pretty low.
Me?
I’d like to be:
‘Liberal Vigilante’
‘Most Feared Liberal’
or my favorite:
‘The Last Progressive You will Ever Fuck With’
ya know something a little more aggressive than…
‘annoying…’ anyway.
Well, I just waded for the first time ever through the trashpile, I mean Malkkkin’s site. Oh.My.Gosh. I’ll never give her another of my clicks, that is for sure.
As far as her stance on immigration, isn’t she an anchor baby?

See, I think that’s the beauty of the contest. If we make it for the “best post about the stupidest things Malkin has done,” then all we have to do is wade through Roy, Sadly, No!, TBogg, Roger Ailes, etc.
It would also serve to resurrect some great old posts that definitely deserve to be revisited. And I’m well aware, nobody wants to go dumpster diving over at Malkin’s.
egregious @ 15
Egregious–
Thanks for leaving a trail so we haven’t just lost you. Take your life back.
You are giving us a nice example of how to deal with the FDL obsession. Thanks!
Come back well. Come back when you can.
Jane–
You are out of your mind!! Do you have the permission of all of the moderators who will have to man the drawbridge to keep out the throngs of dastardly freepers?
Glenn Greenwald and Pam Spaulding and Frederick Clarkson and David Niewert are very strong, brave people with great immune systems. They can read this stuff without harmful decontamination rituals. Not me! I let them tell me about it. Isn’t that enough?

O-o-oh. Well. That is clever. Objection cheerfully withdrawn.

Ah! Jane, this puts me in mind of those weird experiments in the world of parapsychology. You know, the ones where they compare the success rate of a subject’s guesses (about symbols on playing cards hidden from view, for example) against pure chance.
In addition to the unusual folks who guessed correctly more often than could be attributed to chance, you also had the very rare guessers with their almost-magnetic, mystifying attraction to guessing incorrectly. These unusual folk would guess incorrectly, but at a rate much more significant than could possibly be accounted for by chance.
Parapsychologists were amazed.
Years later we see the embodiment of this phenomenon as translated into the world of blog punditry: Michelle Malkin. Incorrect at a rate stunningly beyond the mere level of flipping-a-coin-type chance.
It’s practically mystical.
Jane Hamsher @ 39
How about the best takedown of Malkin? It could be a pro/am sort of thing. Extra points for new words, best use of simile, etc.
egregious –
Please take the same advice you’ve given me on more than one occasion!
Why would you want to be harder on yourself than you are on me?

You can trust that we’ll still be here welcoming you when you get back.

Another living giant:
They said they wanted to teach her to be a “good Jew” as she sat with her arms handcuffed to the legs of her chair for 16 hours a day.
“My first crime was that I refused to work with Shin Bet, the second was that I insisted on going to see the Palestinians and the third was that I protested against the Israeli policy of assassination,” Ms Fahima told the Guardian in her first interview since her release.
But if Tali Fahima was not prepared to be a good Jew then Shin Bet, the Israeli secret service, was determined to put her in jail for as long as possible regardless of what she did.
For nine months of her incarceration she was kept in isolation, without access to any distractions such as books or television. “I used to lie on my bed and think about Jenin, the people I met and wonder how things were going there. I never get bored on my own,” she said.

Not Malkin but important to note as we discuss her attack on AP:

I coined the term resolunacy (at least I didn’t find the term in a Google search) to describe the situation where a person is confronted with clear evidence that their prior beliefs were incorrect and insists on sticking to their position. Fear of being labelled a “flip-flopper” seems to trump their willingness to face the facts staring them in the face.
Malkin, Hinderaker and Horowitz were my early finalists for resolunatic of the year but I’m getting a feeling Dan Riehl may try a late surge LOL.
montag @ 32
This is a great suggestion, montag! I also liked jeffreyw’s idea of the best takedown of Malkin.
And Ed*ard Teller, love the idea of getting David Neiwert to fasten those Orca jaws around Missy Michelle’s leg. It’d take some clever scheming to lure her in though.

Warrior ethic, when you can’t do any more, it’s time to get up again and charge. Repeatedly.
Ref: James Webb, Fields of Fire. Not a quote, just how we scots-irish view the fight.

Ah, no.
No, I’m old enough to laugh at that too.
Egregious – one thing I’ve learned is that I need to trust my comrades. We have a strong and vibrant community here and we can trust it to keep at the work that needs to be done. That means each of us can, as needed, attend to keeping our balance and health knowing our friends will cover for us as we will cover for them.
The last few months I’ve been pretty swamped with regular work and realized over the holidays that I really needed sleep and down time – watched silly movies, read some stuff that had nothing to do with politics, slept late. And now I feel more revived and ready to get on with things but I’m working on making sure I build more balance into life on a regular basis … it makes me more effective at each thing I do.
So take time, rest, be silly or sleep or whatever refreshes you. We’ll cover and be here when you are back for the next round.
Margot – my family used to read the Jean Dixon stuff too and howl with laughter. She was really something!

How ’bout, “Michelle, I think “we” are gonna start a blog”
“Okay, honey”
as i said on my blog (blogwhore much? yes, thank you, i will!) the hardly-ever-right wing blames everyone else when they are wrong.
eason jordan, on his iraqslogger, had the temirty to blame the ap for not being more concilliatory when the bloggers accused them of making sh*t up, and that was a big reason that things went badly.
you heard right, if someone says you’re lying, and you adamantly insist you’re not, you’re making a mistake. because if you say you’re not lying when you’re not lying, you only make the people who think you’re lying think you’re lying.
another thing that cracked me up was jordan’s, and the entire right wing’s, whine that the us military and iraqi government were erroneous in their first assertion that there was no such person as capt. hussein. and jordan (among others that i have read) demands to know why it took six weeks for the military and iraqi govt. to correct their mistake (ie, find and produce capt. hussein), as well as why didn’t capt. hussein himself step up and announce himself?
as if hussein, the us military and the iraqi govt. had nothing better to do than account for themselves to a bunch of american slackers on keyboards. uh, guys, everyone in iraq has a pretty full plate right now, what with the 24/7 civil war, and trying not to get blown to sh*t every time they take a drive to the market!!
these guys, and their ability to deny reality even as it shoots them in the face, are a source of amusement to no end for me.
Not sure what the contest rules will be when all is said and considered, but I’d love to nominate this one from Driftglass.
Sure to be a finalist. Dribbling third. Indeed.

Dallas just fumbled a field goal attempt at point blank range. If the Seahawks can hold on for four plays, they should win this.
Jim @ 80
I stand corrected… well, I’m sitting, but I’m corrected…
Late Night is upstairs.
Okay, I’ll say it:
Do we, in fact, (ultimately) have John Negroponte to thank for playing a not insignificant role in the cooperative release of enough [defined as ‘a panoply of,’ per Judge Walton] classified information via the CIPAct, to allow the Libby trial (and its “faulty memory defense”) to proceed without a graymail dismissal??? I’ve been wondering how that clearance through the top dogs of the intelligence community (and beyond) worked…
Because we may have Mr. Negroponte to thank for staring down Mr. Cheney and refusing to (further) violate our Fourth Amendment rights to privacy:
http://turcopolier.typepad.com…..gropo.html
There’s more there about Rice and her battle for a deputy, and Cheney’s junket to Saudi Arabia, etc., as well. [Larry Johnson has this up on his blog now too, I believe.]
Hmmm…
Seahawks win 21-20. Quite a game, as you might imagine from the score…
I hated to see the Cowboys lose on a screw-up like that. I wanted them to lose right.

Wow.
pow wow @ 89
This is really hard to believe, at least the part about it being Negroponte being the one who refused. But I readily admit to not knowing jack about this situation, especially given the intel community restructuring that created Negroponte’s last job.
UPDATE: Oh yeah, like Jane said, “Wow”.
UPDATE2: Larry Johnson just appears to have reprinted the Sales post from Pat Lang’s site.
UPDATE3: This commenter at Lang’s site sums it up for me:
OK. Just let me know when these bastards go so far that we should impeach them, because I’m convinced that’s the only way we’re going to stop them. Too illegal for Negroponte? That’s a scary thought.
Posted by: semper fubar | 06 January 2007 at 05:58 PM
This is pretty scary, for that reason among many.
powwow … I heard some similar speculation today … pitting Rice against Cheney and saying Negroponte wanted to move to get away from the Cheney cabal and where he could counter Cheney’s war on Iran push … this was somewhere on tv but I can’t remember the source. It’s very confusing … hard to see Rice as Ms Anti-Dick?
Siun @ 95
The person Condi seems to feel loyalty to is Bush, not Cheney. At least, that’s the impression I get based on the usual sources. Is that a mistaken impression?
a commenter over at Pat Lang’s (see Powwow’s link) wisely notes that secret surveillance too illegal for Negropponte is a pretty scary idea ..
when Mr Death Squad objects on moral/legal grounds to Cheney’s plans, that’s mighty chilling!
Siun @ 97
Hit Reload (F5) and look at my 8:24 pm (#94) comment. Is that the quote? Anyway, I agree with the comment.
Then there was this from Laura Rozen, quoting the WaPo:
“But Negroponte is a guy who clearly can’t hold a job.”
My nomination for stupidest Malkin quote from June 25, 2004:
What do you suppose she meant by F’n?

Cindy Sheehan went on a hunger strike awhile back, over the summer I think. Anyhow, there’s a video of MM over at Hot Air in response, with MM shoving food in her face in a deli or somewhere.
