There is now a populist movement in Arab/muslim countries which our elites would like to crush by reasserting some form of authoritarian control. The form of control which has the best chance of succeeding is fundamentalist Islam, now that we have eliminated secular nationalism as a viable option. So we support that and then pretend that we’re fighting Islamism or “Islamofascism.”

Exit polls from last November’s election showed voters in key states such as Missouri almost exactly split among four options: withdrawing all U.S. troops from Iraq, withdrawing some U.S. troops, maintaining the same number as now there, and sending more troops.

But McCain cited Lieberman’s decisive victory over anti-war Democrat Ned Lamont as proof that the electorate was not clamoring for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

“Of course I disagree” with the notion that last November’s election was a mandate to end the Iraq deployment, McCain said heatedly in comments to reporters. Gesturing to Lieberman at his side, McCain said, “There’s no way this guy could have been re-elected if it was as simple as that. Americans are frustrated and angry and that frustration and anger is justified. But when you ask most Americans should we get out right away, most of them say no.”

Of course, if you’re going to claim that polls disapprove of withdrawals (which ones?), you should also note that the polls don’t exactly support escalation, let alone a large, sustained escalation as McCain advocates.

It is tough but I think that we should reshape the debate domestically from the terms currently in use (stay the course, cut and run; strategic redeployment, timetables, and withdrawal) to one in which we consider what it is we are asking our troops to do at this stage of the occupation and whether what they are doing is in our strategic of operational interest. If not they shouldn’t be doing it. The military talks of deployments in terms of troop to task ratios and force protection requirements. We should too.
In short, we should ask the generals to justify the national security requirement of every task US troops are undertaking and if the case cannot be made they shouldn’t be doing it. For example, a couple of soldiers were killed a few months ago, their bodies were mutilated and booby trapped. Jon Kyl argued that we should stay in Iraq to honor their sacrifice. I asked what were they doing that brought them into harm’s way. they were guarding a bridge. Isn’t it legitimate to ask whether it is appropriate for American troops to be guarding bridges this late in the occupation.
So, we should not put Americans unneccessarily in harm’s way, we should not use American firepower to unneccessarily kill Iraqis, we should call on the President to actually take the advice his military commanders have been giving him that he needs to find a political solution and we should reinvigorate the middle east peace process from which we have been awol for six years. But make no mistake about it, it is a tough situation and will require a lot of what the president calls hard work.

I hope Speaker Pelosi adopts Wilson’s language in asking the Bush WH what-in-the-hell-they-think they are doing.

Lieberman won the election, but he also earned himself a world of pain – six years in office, six years in the public eye, as his charade of competence on foreign policy disintegrates along with the situation in Iraq.

I’d like to see Dan Abrams bring an interactive call-in type talk show with random hosts/guests on MSNBC in the primetime. The time is right to spotlight the free press, individuals and traditional media interactions.
