You know, I find that reality prompts quite enough deep, heavy, painful thought about the world & society.

It’s true, I often turn to television for pure distraction & entertainment.

But given the statistics, I’m not sure how many of my fellow citizens read that much about reality, so, sure, why not more heavy treatment of social issues on TV?

Christy – Kudos on mentioning The Wire – - – I think the humor in that show is brilliant, with the best example of it in this past season happening outside the school, the teacher can’t find her car, Prez looks at Randy and Duquan, and it cuts to the car with the school sticker on the bumper with Peanut getting out of it.

Easily my favorite show. Omar is the character I’m most fond of.

Morning gang — moving a bit slow here this morning. Think I’m getting sick, just in time for my vacation. Blergh. Any opinions on the efficacy of getting some preemptive antibiotics going for what is clearly turning into a sinus infection? I hate taking meds, but I don’t want to be miles away from my regular doc and need them, either.

Cristy: Allegra! I had a really bad one over the weekend and Allegra helped immensely. I was over the symptoms in 2 days.

I avoid antibiotics if I can and learned that the key to preventing a sinus infection from getting worse is to begin medicating (with decongestants) at the first sign of infection. This encourages the drainage needed to prevent the infection from backing up in your head, thus making it worse and extending the recovery period.

Of course, this is just a suggestion based on my personal experience. If the infection gets really bad, then, of course, the next logical step is antibiotics.

I really hope you get it knocked out before you depart for your trip! Good luck!

I second this recommendation. I am just getting over a cold and started taking decongestants as soon as noticed it coming on. Dayquil to be exact. My sinuses seem to be fine and I am recovering without a sinus infection. Try to prevent it before your ask for an antibiotic. We are quickly exhausting the number of antibiotics that work and new ones are not coming on the market due to high regulatory hurdles. Once a bug becomes resistant, we are pretty much screwed. So, head the sucker off before it makes a home in your sinuses and breeds.
