Am I the only one whose Spidy Sense is tingling over the Giuliani document theft?
Republicans love to steal things, and their honor among thieves doesn't seem to hold up under pressure all that well (see: Abramoff, Jack). Just as Gerald Ford passes and memories of the White House plumbers remind us what a great tradition of election information theft exists within the GOP, one has to wonder -- who lifted the stuff (in Florida) and gave it to Ben Smith? Has someone infiltrated Giluliani's campaign, were people paid off along the way, or was it simply an uncharacteristic bit of GOP altruism?
The document was obtained by the Daily News from a source sympathetic to one of Giuliani's rivals for the White House.
"A source sympathetic to one of Giuliani's rivals for the White House." Well, that leaves no shortage of suspects now does it. Lord McCain has proven himself to be a man who will do just about anything in the quest for the White House; one has to wonder if the Nixonian hagiography the GOP has been engaging in has finally resulted in a wee bit of overreach on his part.
I can tell this is just going to be like a sore spot your gum you just can't help poking. There's more to this.

My timing is just awesome sometimes. ;)
McCain, Giuliani and Romney. What a line up.
What’s fun is that nobody is letting go of it. It just keeps dragging on and on.
Republican cannibalism at its finest!
It is a bit refreshing. Not only do the Republicans steal from the Democrats (George Will’s theft of the Carter briefing books), they steal from each other too.
Test the briefing papers, if they are covered in Crisco we should move Sam “The Annointer” Brownback to the top of the list.
Then again, seeing how McCain behaves around George W. Bush, I guess that it would still implicate McCain too.
-GSD
Exactly what is Rove up to these days anyway?
EPUd - unless William Rehnquist’s ghost stole the Guiliani briefing book:
Let me see if I can get this right: Al Gore wins in 2000. Bush contests Florida recount. U.S. Supreme Court hallucinates Bush victory?
Does anybody feel better knowing this past six years has been Rehnquist’s hallucination?
Badwater @ 8
I KNOW! I haven’t seen hide nor hair in ages… in fact - now that I think about it - anyone seen him since the election? Is he even still alive?
George Will has always denied he was the thief who stole the Carter briefing books, during the Carter/Reagan prez debates. Funny thing. Will, to my knowledge, has never volunteered to do a polygraph.
I wouldn’t be surprised to know that Karl is doing criminal defendant/lawyer things these days. On many fronts.

brilliant, again
I wonder whether any members of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy that plagued the Clintons for eight years are now working for McCain.
Or any of the Swift Boats for “Truth” gang from 2004.
The party that fostered the rise of Lee Atwater and his protege’ KKKarl Rove is most certainly familiar with these kinds of tactics. I wouldn’t put it past them in the least. It seems this new batch of GOP Operatives aren’t adhearing to their old “hero” Ronald Reagan’s 11th Commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of thine fellow Republican…

OT - Shocking Twist: Iraqi At Center of Dispute Over AP Source Does Exist — And Faces Arrest for Talking to Media
The U.S. military and the Iraqi Interior Ministry raised the doubts about Hussein in questioning the veracity of the AP’s initial reporting on the incident, and the Iraqi ministry suggested that many news organization were giving a distorted, exaggerated picture of the conflict in Iraq. Some Internet bloggers spread and amplified these doubts, accusing the AP of having made up Hussein’s identity in order to disseminate false news about the war.

You gotta watch Deval Patrick speak today as he became the Gov. of MA.

pretty funny when the cosa nostra puts a candidate out there, huh?
Excerpt from Jane’s Florida link:
tsf bold translation: “We’re such whores to corporatists lending us their planes — we can’t possibly be expected to remember on whose plane this happened!!” Like regular folks getting off and on public buses…
Lou Dobbs’ favorite military expert, Gen. David Grange, says the Iraq war “can be won.”
Totally discrediting himself in the process.
Spidy senses in tact and operating at full capacity.
Look for motive.
McCain’s polls say threat is from Rudy. Romney not careless enough to leave documents lying around, and not
stupidworldly enough to steal from Rudy and risk getting caught and discredited. Gotta be the ex-Keating Five lead singer.Question is will Rudy get mad, get even, or just give up? If he is feeling competitive and feels that he can nail McCain on this, it could be a huge windfall for his campaign. Worth siccing some ex-NY cops on McCain’s org to “investigate” one might expect. Nasty business, being a rethug.
McCain was thrilled to see Allen’s prospects go down the caca drain. Kerry? He helped send Lurch back to his sleeping coffin, then tapped a few nails in for good measure. And didn’t he get into it with Obama about Senatorial decorum about a year ago? So he’ll continue to try to put him “in his place”.
McCain is a pompous, pinched back (has he had some work done? I’m just asking…), bully who’s sold his soul to the Christianists in exchange for power and a promise to pardon poppy’s boy george to seal the deal.
But he’s got too much baggage. My guess is that most women don’t like men who dump their wives for rich chickies who can help their careers. He’s in for a world of girl hurt - he’ll have trouble getting the female vote.
Fineline @ 58
He’s from New York and he’s Italian…what do you think he’s gonna do?
Gotta wonder about all the nasties that Old Lord McCain has hired recently, whether one of them got ahold of the Rudy Brief and turned it into a job offer.
Here’s an interesting overlap from Cillizza today:

Hi RG!
RevDeb @ 50
Heartfelt thanks for this linky and indeed this remarkable new MASS governor has a thrilling future. Almost brought me out of my despair and profound sadness I plunged into after reading about the death threat by the Marine officer pilot against Speaker Pelosi near the end of the last thread.
but, but, but…Rudy Can’t Fail:
Sorry tejanarusa, didn’t mean to be cryptic…Ave Maria is a very big project. It’s the kind of place you never have to leave. It will be a gated community, a college, stores, dorms, homes, condos, townhomes, etc. In other words, once you get there, you never have to leave and it will be like a complete little world right in the middle of town.
Gotta think bigger. The nuts have a huge investment in getting the things done that bush has accomplished, and would not take kindly to seeing all their work undone. Let’s say that means that they have already chosen their candidate for 2008, much as they chose bush before 2000. These folks will have huge resources, enough to pay for Giuliani’s playbook and much much more. Getting rid of Giuliani early is merely picking low-hanging fruit. They won’t worry so much about McCain, as indications are he will sink of his own weight. So whoever they have in their pocket is not so much in evidence right now. Think maybe Gingrich, who is slimy and ambitious enough to be their stooge. They won’t worry about the Democrats for a while; remember, they have deep practice at overcoming them, through their usual corrupt election practices.
Mary McCurnin @ 54
I think he is speaking about the typos on the tv.
Obama/Osama
Not a plausible typo. “S” is ring finger, left hand, home row, while “B” is index finger, left hand, first row. Typos are generally finger errors or row errors, not both.

After a few minutes, the civility meeting started to resemble a junior high school mixer, with the boys and girls (or D’s and R’s) eventually repairing to separate sides of the room. More than 655,000 civilians and 3003 American soldiers?
Nope
Wow. I heard that 655,000 figure the other day but I wasn’t sure if I read it right. Thanks Mary.
Horrifying isn’t it.
Punaise: Wiki says that he perreo, a Puerto Rican dance associated with reggaeton, is a type of grinding; The word ‘perreo’ is derived from the Spanish word “Perro” for “Dog” (as in “doggy-style”).
Woofers!
My feeling is the Republicans know they’re going to get their a** kicked in 2008 and they aren’t really putting forward much effort to specify their guy, much the way they let Dole take the fall v. Clinton in 1996. I have doubts they are willing to lose a senate seat, but McCain is ready to retire anyway, so why doesn’t he think this is his time to ‘go out with a bang’ as the party’s nominee or as president?
If that’s right and there is really room for competition over there then it could be a real bloodbath as they let loose on each other, as only the Republicans can.
This early attack on Obama smells of the kind of backstabbing Republicans are famous for, so it’s probably promoted by Hillary. The stolen book could be backed by any Republican — it’s what they do. It’s like Dreier in the House, slowing everything the newly empowered Dems are doing and whining all the while.
Some people just can’t handle the whine. Some lose control, get all sloppy and noisy and they’re no fun to be around. Some are sociable and don’t lose so much control and they’re fun at parties. It isn’t clear to me yet where Dreier falls in that spectrum. We’ll see soon enough.
Go Nancy go!
Woo hoo!
Dontcha just love the gleam in a newly-elected Speaker’s eyes when they get their hands on that gavel? Wheeee!
How long do ya figure it will take before we discover George has been opening mail for some time and it’s just now being publicized. Heck, he may even be reading Nancy’s mail?

Nice diary over at Kos about an encounter with Paul Begala at a swearing-in open house event.

Peripetia has a very funny take on the bumican “surge”
The playbook I am worried about mostly is Bush’s Escalation. Does anyone think this Escalation, is being modeled after the Harman Kahn playbook?
Conflict escalation is the escalation of a conflict to make it more destructive, confrontational, painful or otherwise “less comfortable.” The term is said to be originally coined by Herman Kahn.In systems theory it would be modeled as positive feedback.
Herman Kahn, who wrote the book On Escalation (1965).

I’m sure that Willard (the Mittster) wasn’t born in MA either. His dad was a senator from MI I think.
But Deval was indeed born on the South Side of Chicago. He talked about it all the time on the stump. Somehow someone saw something in him and he got a free ride to Milton Academy. That’s where it all began.
Quite a story.
Thanks Revdeb.

D.C. Notes: Breaking News from the Hill
We’re still on the Hill, and the great news of the day — indeed, the best news we’ve heard all week– is that tomorrow Democratic Congressional leaders will come out with a strong statement on troop escalation, laying down a marker and establishing the Democratic position on what has become the first critical decision on the war in Iraq facing the 110th Congress.
This from Arianna over at Huffinton
Somehow I don’t think an escalation will have a calming effect for anyone. I can’t see it.

I don’t think that’s going to happen, for rhetorical (political) reasons if nothing else. In addition, Bush has shown no compunctions about breaking laws he doesn’t like, so why wouldn’t he just reallocate funds from somewhere else?
In the end, I think they’re going to have to impeach the guy to get us out of Iraq.
UPDATE: I’ll just add that I’ve said this before.
radio (NPR) saying W held a press conf this evening (trying to steal our thunder, much?), and said, yet again…we can expect to hear his Iraq policy someitme next week—but he’s still working on it.
The clip of him speaking sounded he was on downers…long pauses even between words…but then he sped up and finished like someone who just recalled his memorized text.
Speaking of Olbermann — does anyone know of a site that one can watch him live? Or whether all shows are available on MSNBC after they run? (no cable, but I would love to watch regularly)

Wolfie doesn’t have much depth. In Clinton’s last term he flew into Monterey with the traveing press corps following Clinton back from a vacation in Hawaii. Leon Panetta, then out of office, hosted Clinton for a big rally on the new CA State University Monterey Bay campus. I was one of the volunteers to herd the press corps to their bleacher and I drew Wofie to escort to his seat when he swaggered across the lawn all by himself. I felt a little sorry for him for it was painfully obvious he was shunned and marginalized by his fellows in the press corps. He straggled back to the press bus as he arrived appearing perfectly miserable. We snarky voluneers, spying his obvious elevator shoes and attitude nicknamed him SMC - small man complexed.
